In The Name Of Awareness: Audience, Venue, And The Politics Of Witnessing Human Rights Violations, Barberán Reinares, Eunah Lee
Publications and Research
Human rights scholar Wendy Kozol has posed a series of challenging questions regarding women’s human rights: “How are experiences of suffering represented? By whom? In what venues? And for which audiences?” This article seeks to address Kozol’s inquiry regarding representations of sexual violence and context by considering the Comfort Women Wanted installation at the Museum of Sex in New York City. The curators of this exhibit, partly sponsored by the Sex Workers Project, seem to have framed this art display within the conflicting feminist debates on sexual slavery and sex work, thus conflating “comfort women” survivors with sex workers within …

Literary Networks Everywhere: An Analysis Of Literary Connections Across Time And Culture, Rachel Riffel
Journal of the Symposium of University Research and Creative Expression
Project Mentor(s): Katharine Whitcomb
This paper explores the concept of literary discourse as a networked form, using Caroline Levine’s theory of “networks” as expansive systems of meaning. Through the poetry of several postmodern poets and their texts such as Terrance Hayes’ American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin, Anne Carson’s The Beauty of the Husband, and Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, this essay analyzes how contemporary poets use intertextuality, historical references, and classical forms not as rigid structures but as connective nodes in a broader literary web. These texts illustrate how poetry continues to participate in an evolving cultural and literary …

Mcmc-Net: Accelerating Markov Chain Monte Carlo With Neural Networks For Inverse Problems, Anuj Abhishek
Faculty Scholarship
In many computational problems, using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) can be prohibitively time-consuming. We propose MCMC-Net, a simple yet efficient way to accelerate MCMC via neural networks. The key idea of our approach is to substitute the true likelihood function of the MCMC method with a neural operator based surrogate. We extensively evaluate the accuracy and speedup of our method on three different partial differential equation-based inverse problems where likelihood computations are computationally expensive, namely electrical impedance tomography, diffuse optical tomography, and quantitative photoacoustic tomography. MCMC-Net performs similar to the classical likelihood counterpart but with a significant speedup. …
