Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales
Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales
Master of Theological Studies Honors Theses
This thesis examines the Picuris/Peñasco Valley of Northern New Mexico as a unique case study for understanding Catholic unity amidst cultural plurality and historical tension. The study investigates how the confluence of Picuris Pueblo (Tiwa) Indigenous spirituality and Hispano/Spanish Colonial Catholic traditions has forged a profoundly localized and resilient faith community. Drawing upon historical analysis of colonial resistance, cultural anthropology, and theological reflection, this work argues that the concept of sacred land (sacred soil) functions as the central unifying principle. It reveals how the shared commitment to the land facilitated a process of religious and cultural syncretism, creating a form …

Performing Dual Glucose Clamp Experiments In Sedated Farm Swine: A Practical Method, Marc Torjman, Winston Hamilton, Katherine Dillon, Channy Loeum, Jeffrey Joseph
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
The hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp technique is considered the gold standard for measuring insulin sensitivity in large animals. We developed a practical method for conducting concurrent glucose clamp experiments in a pair of sedated farm swine positioned in a sling. Descriptions of customized equipment and central venous access surgical procedures for blood collection are provided. Personnel functions are described for execution of the clamp protocol. A total of 24 hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp studies were performed over 6 weeks. Infusaports remained functional for 1454 blood samples. There were three CSII catheter occlusions during bolus administration, and the swine showed no signs of infection or …

Growth Mindset In The Mathematics Classroom: Studying The Effects Of A Growth Mindset Intervention On High School Students In A Geometry Classroom, Katelyn Strauss
Mathematics Graduate Theses
Having a growth mindset is crucial to being successful in a mathematics classroom. However, many students believe themselves to be either “mathematics people” or “not mathematics people”. When students believe they are not a mathematics person, they are far less likely to engage in material where they face struggles, and thus they miss out on valuable learning. A review of the literature has show that students have been able to shift their mindset from fixed to growth through a series of interventions. I used a unit in Geometry to see how a growth mindset intervention would affect the mindset of …
Advancing Peptide-Based Vaccines Against Candida: A Comparative Perspective On Liposomal And Synthetic Formulations, Hong Xin
School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications
The growing threat of multidrug-resistant fungal pathogens, especially Candida auris, has underscored the need for effective antifungal vaccines. This commentary highlights recent advances in peptide-based vaccination using the SNAP (Spontaneous Nanoliposome Antigen Presentation) platform, focusing on the FM-SNAP vaccine, a bivalent liposomal formulation targeting the surface-expressed peptides fructose bisphosphate aldolase (Fba) and methionine synthase (Met6). Compared to earlier constructs such as MP12, FM-SNAP achieves superior immunogenicity and long-lasting protection at lower antigen doses. It elicits balanced Th1/Th2 cytokine responses and demonstrates durable efficacy in both immunocompetent and complement-deficient mouse models. The platform's compatibility with clinically approved adjuvants (MPLA and QS-21), …

Functional Effects Of Heavy Metal Exposures On N6-Methyladenosine (M6a) Methylation And Other Epitranscriptomic Modifications In The Central Nervous System, Niraj Lodhi, Lauren Powell, Jay S. Schneider
Functional Effects Of Heavy Metal Exposures On N6-Methyladenosine (M6a) Methylation And Other Epitranscriptomic Modifications In The Central Nervous System, Niraj Lodhi, Lauren Powell, Jay S. Schneider
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Among different RNA methylations, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant in the brain and determines the fate of RNA through reversible processes using methyltransferases, demethylases, and methyl-binding proteins. The reversibility of m6A is an emerging regulatory mechanism for gene expression, regulating many aspects of RNA metabolism and influencing learning and memory processes. Global m6A profiles are dynamically modified via the activity of various writers, readers, and erasers. However, m6A alterations from exposure to heavy metals, including the metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), and manganese (Mn) and the metalloid arsenic (As), and the impact on brain function, are not …

Background/objectives: Prenatal exposure to famine can lead to lasting health effects through changes in DNA methylation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of prenatal exposure to the Chinses Great Famine (1959-1961) on human epigenome and the subsequent influence on blood lipids.
Methods: We conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of peripheral blood-based DNA methylation and prenatal exposure to the Chinese Great Famine as well as blood lipids among eight participants exposed to famine and eight sex-matched participants (born ≤ 3 years after the famine). Genome-wide DNA methylation sites were profiled using the Illumina EPIC BeadChip, which covers 850K methylation …

In this nonpayment proceeding for a project-based Section 8 unit, the court granted the tenant's motion to amend her answer and for summary judgment, dismissing the case. The landlord failed to comply with mandatory HUD Handbook recertification and termination procedures, including serving deficient and untimely notices lacking required information and proof of both mailing and personal delivery. Inconsistencies in the tenant's file further highlighted the landlord's procedural failures, which improperly terminated the tenant's subsidy. As the subsidy termination was improper, the landlord was barred from maintaining a nonpayment proceeding based on market rent.

All Decisions
The court granted the tenant's motion for summary judgment, dismissing the landlord's nonpayment petition. The landlord sought market rent after purporting to terminate the tenant's HUD Project-Based Section 8 subsidy. However, the landlord failed to demonstrate compliance with HUD Handbook regulations for recertification and subsidy termination. Specifically, the recertification and termination notices lacked required information, proof of proper service (including attempted personal delivery for termination), and timely issuance. The court found that deficient recertification notices, which did not state the exact market rent, preclude a nonpayment proceeding. No question of fact existed regarding the landlord's non-compliance, necessitating dismissal.

The immune environment surrounding the brain plays a fundamental role in monitoring signs of injury. Insults, including ischemic stroke, can disrupt this balance and incite an exaggerated inflammatory response, yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we show that the mast-cell-specific receptor Mrgprb2 regulates post-stroke brain inflammation from the meninges. Mrgprb2 causes meningeal mast cell degranulation after stroke, releasing immune mediators. This process recruits skull bone marrow neutrophils into the dura and further promotes neutrophil migration from the dura into the brain by cleaving the chemorepellent semaphorin 3a. We demonstrate that the human ortholog, MRGPRX2, is expressed in human meningeal …

Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by lower lip pits and orofacial clefts (OFCs). With a prevalence of ∼1 in 35,000 live births, it is the most common form of syndromic clefting. Most VWS is attributed to variants in IRF6 (∼70%) or GRHL3 (∼5%), leaving up to 25% of individuals without a molecular diagnosis. Both IRF6 and GRHL3 function in a transcriptional regulatory network (TRN) governing differentiation of periderm, a single epithelial cell layer preventing pathological adhesions during palatogenesis. Periderm disruption can elicit a spectrum of phenotypes, including lip pits and OFCs, pterygia, and severe …

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) is a subtype of central nervous system metastatic disease that is associated with poor patient outcomes and limited treatment options. There is an unmet need to develop preclinical models of LMD to expedite and improve the development of new therapeutics. Here, we describe the development of multiple orthotopic immunocompetent murine models of melanoma LMD, including their use to assess the efficacy of systemic and/or intrathecal immunotherapy. LMD was established by direct intrathecal injection of murine cell lines (B16-F10, BP, D4M, D4M-UV2, MC38-gp100, RMS, YUMM3.1, and YUMMER1.7) into the cisterna magna of C57BL/6 mice. Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are crucial to eukaryotic genome regulation, with a range of reported functions and mechanisms of action. Though often studied individually, it has long been recognized that the modifications function by combinatorial synergy or antagonism. Interplay may involve PTMs on the same histone, within the same nucleosome (containing a histone octamer), or between nucleosomes in higher-order chromatin. Given this, the field must distinguish ever greater complexity, and the context in which it is studied, with brevity and precision. The proteoform was introduced to define individual forms of a protein by sequence and PTMs, followed by the nucleoform …
