Orthographic Support For Verb Identification In Typically Developing Three-Year-Old Children, Grace T. Clark, Christina Reuterskiold
Orthographic Support For Verb Identification In Typically Developing Three-Year-Old Children, Grace T. Clark, Christina Reuterskiold
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Children, as young as four years of age, have demonstrated enhanced noun learning when presented with orthographic representations during word learning tasks. This study sought to determine if three-year-old typically developing children would demonstrate an orthographic facilitation effect during an asynchronous computer-based verb learning task. One-hundred ten children were taught 8 novel verbs by presenting videos of novel actions paired with novel labels in sentence frames. Four novel verbs were taught with orthographic support present and four were taught without orthographic support. Participants were exposed to the words a total of two times and then given a post-test to assess …

Verbs Are Tricky: Does Orthography Support Verb Identification In Typically Developing Children Ages 3–8?, Grace T. Clark, Gabriella Pesantes, Madison Skibicki
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose:
This study examined whether orthographic representations—seeing a printed word while hearing it—facilitate verb identification accuracy in typically developing children and whether developmental or literacy factors modulate this effect.
Method:
One hundred eight English-speaking children ages 3–8 years (M = 5.86) completed a web-based verb learning task through Children Helping Science. Participants were randomly assigned to an orthography-present or orthography-absent condition while learning six novel verbs paired with dynamic action videos. Accuracy during a two-alternative forced-choice test was coded from parent-verified pointing responses. Caregivers completed a literacy interest questionnaire, and children completed a letter–sound correspondence task. Multilevel logistic regression …

Isolation And Identification Of Lactic Acid Bacteria From Bee Body Parts Surviving High Temperature Exposure, Sean Derrick M. Oliquiano, Noel G. Sabino, Renard M. Zamora
Journal Article
Temperature stress can influence the composition and stability of microbial communities associated with bees; however, some lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains demonstrate tolerance to such environmental stresses, allowing them to persist and remain functionally active under challenging conditions. This study aimed to isolate and identify LAB associated with honeybees that are capable of surviving exposure to high temperatures. A total of 196 bee samples were processed under unheated and heat-treated conditions (80 °C for 10 min) to selectively recover thermotolerant bacteria. Cultivation on Yeast Glucose Starch Agar supplemented with nalidixic and pipemidic acid favored the growth of LAB under oxygen-limited …

3d Bioprinting Technology Innovation In Female Reproductive System, Siyao Chen, Tongxin Wang, Jiaqi Chen, Mingxing Sui, Luyao Wang, Xueyu Zhao, Jianqiao Sun, Yingli Lu
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications
Several diseases affect the female reproductive system, and both disease factors and treatments impact its integrity and function. Consequently, understanding the mechanisms of disease occurrence and exploring treatment methods are key research focuses in obstetrics and gynecology. However, constructing accurate disease models requires a microenvironment closely resembling the human body, and current animal models and 2D in vitro cell models fall short in this regard. Thus, innovative in vitro female reproductive system models are urgently needed. Additionally, female reproductive system diseases often cause tissue loss, yet effective tissue repair and regeneration have long been a bottleneck in the medical field. …

Treatment Effects Of Genital Mycoplasma Species In High-Risk Pregnant Individuals: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Takashi Yoshimasu, Tasuku Inao, Tetsuya Kawakita
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications
Objective
We aimed to estimate the causal effect of treatment for genital Mycoplasma species on preterm birth (PTB) and spontaneous abortion (SA). We also evaluated treatment effects separately for cases with co-infection of Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma species.
Methods
This was a retrospective observational cohort study at a single center. Singleton mothers with one or more risk factors for PTBs were screened and treated for genital Mycoplasma species. The treatment was repeated based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results after each course. We applied inverse probability treatment weighting, and risk differences (RDs) of the treatment effect on pregnancy outcomes were estimated …
Investigation Of Rna-Binding Protein Expression Changes In The Hippocampus Following Doxorubicin And Cyclophosphamide Treatment, Lijie Chen
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) following doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide treatment in a rat model, revealing three significant alterations in hippocampal tissue: selective downregulation of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNPA1) (21% decrease, p=0.0298), compromised astrocytic network integrity evidenced by reduced GFAP-positive area in cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) (24%, pB=0.026) and dentate gyrus (DG) (19%, pB=0.027) regions, and elevated cellular senescence marker p19Arf specifically in DG (69%, pB=0.033) and CA3 (27%, pB=0.024). The inverse relationship between hnRNPA1 reduction and p19Arf elevation suggests a potential mechanistic link between RNA dysregulation and senescence induction, with pronounced vulnerability in …
Toxin-Like Proteins In The Venom Of Drosophila Parasitoids, Lady V. Cardenas
Toxin-Like Proteins In The Venom Of Drosophila Parasitoids, Lady V. Cardenas
Dissertations and Theses
The figitid parasitoid wasps of Drosophila are gaining importance in agriculture due to their ability to kill the resilient soft-fruit pest Drosophila suzukii. Their success and infection strategies vary, and the mechanisms underlying these differences are largely unknown. Some of their venom proteins have been shown to be important in suppressing host defense. Here, we report that Ganaspis brasiliensis, a parasitoid of D. suzukii survives well on Drosophila yakuba, a host species with a strong cellular immunity, and infected flies are unable to mount a strong immune response. To predict possible toxin-like proteins in Ganaspis venoms that might suppress cellular …

Zooarchaeologists routinely analyze assemblages that were initially sorted into major animal type (birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates) by students or lab technicians with varied backgrounds in zooarchaeology. Sorting errors are probably made in this initial phase, which can affect taxonomic representation and understanding of human–animal relationships. Recent study of the immense faunal assemblage (over 1 million NSP [Number of Specimens]) from Čḯxwicən (45CA523), a 2,700-year-old Lower Elwha Klallam village located on the coast of Washington (USA), allows us to systematically analyze trends in sorting errors. For example, 22.6% of the bird bones included in our sample were initially missorted into other …
Lis1 Depletion In Adult Mouse Projection Neurons Causes Neurodegeneration And Severe Neurological Phenotypes, Anne Ventrone
Lis1 Depletion In Adult Mouse Projection Neurons Causes Neurodegeneration And Severe Neurological Phenotypes, Anne Ventrone
Theses and Dissertations
Proper LIS1 function is crucial for human brain development, as mutations in LIS1 lead to lissencephaly, a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by defective proliferation, differentiation and migration of neural precursors. Our understanding of LIS1's functions after brain development is limited. LIS1 regulates cytoplasmic dynein 1 (dynein), an essential microtubule motor protein in cell division and migration, but also a cellular transport motor. We previously showed that tamoxifen (TX)-induced global knockout of LIS1 using a Cre/Lox system (Act-Lis1iKO) in young adult mice results in severe neurological defects and rapid lethality. This strongly supports LIS1's critical post- developmental role, but the underlying …

A Framework For Ordinary Urban Heritage Mapmaking : The Case Of Trok In Rattanakosin, Bangkok’S Historic Center, Prin Jhearmaneechotechai
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This research offers an alternative mapmaking framework for Ordinary Urban Heritage (OUH), specifically applied to the Trok (local alleys) of Bangkok's Rattanakosin district. Departing from conventional approaches that might map Trok solely as pedestrian urban patterns, this framework uniquely explores Trok as dynamic urban spaces that enable the manifestation of diverse everyday heritages, including temporary commercial activities, people’s way of living, and sacred spaces, thereby revealing a richer understanding of OUH. The framework's development is grounded in the analysis of existing mapping practices, historical maps, and non-participatory surveys, incorporating five key OUH selection criteria sensitive to these dynamic manifestations: (1) …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This study investigates the dialectical relation between tradition and current everyday domestic practices in traditional Balinese dwellings that manifest through the spatial adaptation of their outdoor spaces. Traditional Balinese dwellings consist of a compound collection of partly open pavilions surrounded by open spaces, following the symbolic classification of Balinese cosmology, Sanga Mandala. Dwelling adaptation becomes necessary to enable the support of the changing household needs throughout time, aiming to capture a process that emerges in the current traditional dwellings bounded by a particular cultural order. This study focuses on the spatial adaptation strategies of the outdoor spaces as a …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Since UNESCO formalized the concept of cultural landscapes in 1992, heritage discourse has shifted from monument-centric approaches toward values-based perspectives that foreground the dynamic interplay among people, place, and ecology. Within this framework, cultural landscapes offer a critical lens for understanding rural settlements not only as spatial configurations but also as embodiments of intangible knowledge and ecological adaptation. This study investigates Kampung Batu Lonceng, a vernacular settlement situated along the active Lembang Fault in West Java, Indonesia. With historical traces dating back to the Neolithic period, the kampung exemplifies how spatial formation is shaped simultaneously by geomorphological vulnerabilities and long-standing …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This study investigates how older individuals encounter nature through sensorial contact in their domestic settings. It argues that nature should be integrated into the older adults’ domestic spaces to foster connections with nature that promote active living and improve their well-being. Such interactions with nature are captured by understanding the relationships between the degrees of connection with nature: viewing nature, being in nature, and doing in nature. This study was conducted through field observations and interviews with 24 older adults with varying physical capacities and levels of independence across 15 households in Jakarta and West Java. It further maps the …

Renewing Cells, Enduring Genes, And Metabolic Decline In Murine Liver Aging, John T. Gonzalez
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Aging is associated with physiological and molecular decline and a concurrent increase in dysfunction, chronic disease, and mortality. Despite the fact that aging is the greatest risk factor for many chronic diseases, fundamental aging research has historically lagged behind disease-specific research. This deterioration and it's repercussions has different manifestations in different organs. This dissertation focuses on dynamics of mouse aging with a focus on the liver. The liver's diverse functions are integral to many homeostatic processes, including maintaining metabolic balance, detoxifying harmful substances, supporting immune defense, and regulating blood and endocrine systems. Its impairment can lead to significant health issues. …
A.R.C.Hitecture For Mission: Prototyping Pathways To Renew The Heart Of The Church, David Sunde
A.R.C.Hitecture For Mission: Prototyping Pathways To Renew The Heart Of The Church, David Sunde
Doctor of Ministry
Despite churches’ commitment to making disciples, many earnest Christians—active in church teaching, volunteering, and community life—feel ill-equipped to disciple others. While biblical instruction and resources abound, spiritual formation weighted toward cognitive learning relies on willpower and falls short in shaping identity and desires. The focus on personal salvation often reduces faith to sin management, leaving many underwhelmed and uncertain about how to live meaningfully as citizens of the kingdom. Without qualitative, relational, and reproductive disciple-making, faith lacks transformative power. A.R.C.hitecture for Mission: Prototyping Pathways to Renew the Heart of the Church is a pracademic manuscript that explores disciple-shaping movements from …
