I Miss My Teeth; I Feel Your Teeth, Emma A. Brauser
I Miss My Teeth; I Feel Your Teeth, Emma A. Brauser
Scripps Senior Theses
I miss my teeth and I feel your teeth are two projects that build on one another in an exploration of the mouth as a vessel for embodied experience and interpersonal translation. These pieces represent the mouth as an ever-changing landscape, one that requires multisensorial modes of understanding. I feel your teeth counters overreliance on the visual, introducing gum-chewing as a way to comprehend the translation from the visual to the tactile and back to the visual.
Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah
Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah
Pitzer Senior Theses
This study presents an original interdisciplinary investigation into how reinforcement learning (RL) can model motor and cognitive defects and potentially improve motor and cognitive functions in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), a non-progressive neurological disorder that impairs movement and adaptability. Integrating computational neuroscience and machine learning, the research applies policy gradient methods and Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) to simulate adaptive learning in agents with and without CP-related constraints.
The central aim is to compare the cumulative rewards of optimal policies, derived from value iteration, and human-like learning policies using the REINFORCE algorithm, both with and without the Bellman baseline. The …
The Chesapeake Pearl: A Proposal For An Environmental Public Art Installation, Samuel I. Reichard
The Chesapeake Pearl: A Proposal For An Environmental Public Art Installation, Samuel I. Reichard
Pitzer Senior Theses
In this thesis, I lay the foundation for an environmental art project along Chesapeake Bay. It includes an analysis of relevant literature and case studies, as well as a proposal for the project. The Chesapeake Pearl (working title) would be a 20-foot spherical aquarium that will visually display the water filtration capacity of eastern oysters and native seagrass, aiming to inspire curiosity around these organisms and the greater Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The project exists at the intersection of environmental art and environmental education and seeks to promote learning and public engagement through visually demonstrating a scientific process, the water filtration …
Visions Of The Garden: Transforming The Former Claremont Golf Course Into The Coastal Sage Mosaic, Ella C. Kim
Visions Of The Garden: Transforming The Former Claremont Golf Course Into The Coastal Sage Mosaic, Ella C. Kim
Pitzer Senior Theses
A thirty-three-acre parcel of land sits at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at a vulnerable wildland-urban interface (WUI), raising key ecological concerns. This parcel, a former golf course, is the focused site for this conceptual landscape and restoration plan. The now-neglected site has no proposed plans for restoration or development yet holds significant potential for transformation. Stakeholders’ conflicting visions range from land preservation, ecological restoration, Indigenous land rights, commodification for revenue and development, and prioritizing the needs of the natural environment in coexistence with modern human enjoyment. The conceptual plan addresses these critical considerations in verbal and visual …
Would You Recommend This Picture To Your Friends? A History Of Hollywood Test Screenings, Myles Mikulic
Would You Recommend This Picture To Your Friends? A History Of Hollywood Test Screenings, Myles Mikulic
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines Americans’ relationship with information gathering in the 20th century through the lens of the Hollywood market research technique of movie test screenings. During the post-production phase of a narrative commercial film, a studio will typically hold a test (or preview) screening to gauge audience reaction. An unfinished version of the film is screened before an audience of nonprofessional “regular moviegoers,” after which viewers fill out questionnaires. These can range from the generalized, such as favorite characters or whether you would recommend the film to friends, to the granular, such as the depiction of violence in a war …
Queen: The Remaking Of Character In The Modernist Novel, Ann L. Wilson Green
Queen: The Remaking Of Character In The Modernist Novel, Ann L. Wilson Green
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Virginia Woolf famously declared that, “on or about 1910 human character changed,” prompting her to call for a change in the way novelists depicted character. I study one such character, Queen Victoria, to trace how Woolf and James Joyce reimagined how to depict a historical figure in a novel. What is Queen Victoria in the Modernist novel and why does she begin to appear? She is a symptom and symbol of a problem the Modern writers were trying to work out. Despite having an ambivalent or even hostile relationship with the Queen, she is one of the most represented historical …
How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey
How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey
Emory Law Journal
Debates about artificial intelligence (AI) tend to swing between the optimistic and the apocalyptic. I propose a less binary approach that frames conversations about AI from the perspectives of theories of art and creativity. Whether we agree that AI is artificial or intelligent, whether it should be constrained or liberated, we cannot deny its influence on literary, artistic, and innovative production. AI may be described as simply a new tool to produce art and science, like the camera or the microscope, or it may transform and reshape art and science, the way the internet transformed global communication. Either way, these …

Predicting Human Steering From Optic Flow Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Katie E. Bernard
Predicting Human Steering From Optic Flow Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Katie E. Bernard
Honors Theses
Human driving is a complex visuomotor task and the specific visual clues that guide it remain under investigation. While prior research has emphasized gaze-based strategies such as the Tangent Point and Future Path hypotheses, recent evidence highlights the potential role of optic flow, the visual motion pattern perceived during self-movement, as critical to steering ability. This thesis explores whether raw optic flow alone can support accurate predictions of human steering behavior. We trained a convolutional neural network to map optic flow vector fields to steering angles in a virtual reality driving simulation. The dataset, collected by Giguere et al., included …

Characterization Of A Highly Arsenic-Resistant Microbe, Eleanor E. Windholz
Characterization Of A Highly Arsenic-Resistant Microbe, Eleanor E. Windholz
Honors Theses
Heavy metal pollution in our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is a major global concern, as chronic exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic and chromium has dire effects on mammalian health. In these polluted, arsenic-rich environments, microorganisms resistant to heavy metals have been isolated. The microbe isolated in this paper was resistant to As(V) up to 1100 mM, which is significantly higher than most published strains, and resistant to Cr(VI) at concentrations up to 5 mM. The microbe was tentatively identified as Micrococcus luteus, but its high arsenic resistance suggests it may be a novel strain. The ability of the …
Mortal Rivers: A Case Study Analysis Of Indigenous Water Sovereignty Within The Penobscot And Lakota Nations, 19th Century To Present, Moya S. Stringer
Mortal Rivers: A Case Study Analysis Of Indigenous Water Sovereignty Within The Penobscot And Lakota Nations, 19th Century To Present, Moya S. Stringer
Honors Theses
Indigenous water sovereignty has long been a contested problem within the continent of Turtle Island. In 2016, the Lakota Nation globalized the message Water is Life through their movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline, an oil infrastructure that would put one of the continent’s largest watersheds at risk. The revolutionary fervor of the Water is Life movement travelled all the way to the Penobscot Nation in the Dawnland, a place we now call Maine. In an adjacent vein to the Lakota, the Penobscot people have spent the 21st century addressing damming projects and rampant pollution from the 1900s in a …
Wave Reflections In A Biophysically Detailed Model Of Cardiac Tissue, Grace Moberg
Wave Reflections In A Biophysically Detailed Model Of Cardiac Tissue, Grace Moberg
Honors Theses
Regular heart rhythms are governed by the coordinated spread of action potentials through cardiac tissue. The interaction of an action potential with a tissue heterogeneity may lead to a reflection, where both a retrograde and an anterograde wave propagate off of the initial impulse. Reflections have been experimentally linked to cardiac arrhythmias, but their mechanisms of generation are not well-understood. Mathematically, reflections in phenomenological models of cardiac tissue have been linked to an unstable periodic orbit. These models typically sacrifice detail about the variety of ionic currents and processes involved in action potential propagation in favor of mathematical simplicity. Biophysically …
From Living With The Land To Vacation Timeshares: The Impact Of Outdoor Recreation On The United States’S Recognition Of Shoshone, Timpanogos, And Havasupai Ancestral Homelands, Harry T. Robison
Honors Theses
The romantic view of the Western United States from the perspective of a US resident is fueled by the thought of adventure and expansion. The phenomena of the "Wild West," frontier ideology, and manifest destiny have kindled a love of being outside and pursuing new and "unexplored" territory. Long before those ideologies came into play, people already inhabited these landscapes. As colonists moved West, many of those inhabitants were forcefully moved onto reservations. Those people include the Shoshone people of Wyoming, the Timpanogos people of Utah, and the Havasupai people of Arizona. Alongside this history of displacement, the United States …
Identifying The Spread Of Invasive Jumping Worms Across Maine’S Forests Using Soil Edna, Rebecca Wanger
Identifying The Spread Of Invasive Jumping Worms Across Maine’S Forests Using Soil Edna, Rebecca Wanger
Honors Theses
Jumping worms of the Megascolecidae family are invasive earthworms from East Asia that have been spreading across the United States since the late 1800s (Chang et al., 2021). Recently, the earthworms have gained more attention for their expansion into northeastern states, as they are believed to have negative impacts on the soil biogeochemistry, flora, and fauna of these forest ecosystems that have had no native earthworms given the recent nature of the Last Glacial Maximum (~11,000 yrs ago; Bohlen et al. 2004; McCay et al. 2020). The earthworms are distinguished by their thrashing behaviors, milky-white smooth clitellum, and evenly spaced …
Effects Of Direct And Indirect Predator Cue Intensity On Foraging Decisions In A Deer Mouse, Peromyscus, Nicholas G. Levinson
Effects Of Direct And Indirect Predator Cue Intensity On Foraging Decisions In A Deer Mouse, Peromyscus, Nicholas G. Levinson
Honors Theses
Ecologists developed optimal foraging theory as a framework to understand how an animal may spend minimal time to maximize resource intake. A giving-up density (GUD) is a metric of the density of remaining food in a food patch at which an animal decides foraging is no longer economical. This study aims to test how the intensity of direct and indirect predator cues alter foraging patterns of deer mice. To measure GUD, I used depletable food patches deployed in the “upper woods” on the periphery of Colby College. To simulate direct predator cues, 1 mL of fox urine was applied on …
Mucking Up Public Health: A Geospatial Analysis Of Agricultural Sludge Application And Cancer Prevalence In Maine, Sarah A. Bassett
Mucking Up Public Health: A Geospatial Analysis Of Agricultural Sludge Application And Cancer Prevalence In Maine, Sarah A. Bassett
Honors Theses
This study investigates the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on cancer prevalence throughout Maine. The main contribution of this project is the database constructed to examine cancer rates at a novel aggregation area: watersheds. By using a watershed as the aggregation area, this study gains insight into the threat that spreading sludge as fertilizer on agricultural fields poses to human health through groundwater pathways. Using geospatial analysis and an ordinary least squares regression model, this study estimates the effect of the presence of PFAS in a watershed from 2017 to 2021, in addition to estimating the impact of …
How Does Cocaine Exposure Affect Early Gene Expression Changes In The Prefrontal Cortex (Pfc) And Striatum?, Saathvika Diviti
How Does Cocaine Exposure Affect Early Gene Expression Changes In The Prefrontal Cortex (Pfc) And Striatum?, Saathvika Diviti
Honors Theses
Cocaine use disorder (CUD) remains a significant public health concern, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying individual susceptibility are poorly understood. This study investigates early transcriptional responses to acute cocaine exposure in two key brain regions implicated in addiction, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and striatum, using genetically diverse Diversity Outbred (DO) mice. Paired tissue samples were collected following a standardized sensitization protocol and analyzed via bulk RNA sequencing. Differential expression analysis revealed 37 significantly differentially expressed genes in the striatum. These genes overlapped with gene sets associated with substance use, neurodevelopmental disorders, and immune signaling, implicating shared pathways in central nervous …

Zero Fluf(F): Guided Activity For Effective Ai Prompting And Output Review With The Fluf(F) Test, Jennifer L. Parker
Teaching Repository of AI-Infused Learning
To support AI literacy, educators integrate the FLUF(F) Test Guided Practice Activity as a structured approach to teaching effective GenAI interactions. This strategy emphasizes the dual nature of AI engagement—prompt generation as input and critical evaluation as output. Learners use the FLUF(F) Test templates to craft purposeful prompts and assess AI-generated responses across formats like text, images, or multimedia. Over time, this guided practice helps students internalize the process, enabling confident and natural interactions with AI tools.
Space Agriculture, Biotechnology, And Terraforming: Rethinking The Paradigm Of Harmful Contamination, Francesca Giannoni-Crystal
Space Agriculture, Biotechnology, And Terraforming: Rethinking The Paradigm Of Harmful Contamination, Francesca Giannoni-Crystal
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
As humanity transitions from sporadic exploratory space missions to permanent settlements on celestial bodies (like the Moon or Mars), agriculture biotechnology, and, potentially, terraforming projects will be essential for establishing self-sustaining settlements.
These activities raise critical issues concerning the interpretation of the principle of harmful contamination under Article IX of the Outer Space Treaty (OST) and its implementation through the Committee on Space Research’s Policy on Planetary Protection (COSPAR Policy) referred together in this article as the “Planetary Protection Framework,” which is primarily oriented toward exploration with scientific integrity rather than permanent habitation.
The challenge lies in the fact that …
Tribal Legal Licensing Of Attorneys, House Counsel Status, And The Opportunity To Redefine The Jd Preferred Position And The Entire Lawyer Ecosystem, Nicholas J. Stamates
Tribal Legal Licensing Of Attorneys, House Counsel Status, And The Opportunity To Redefine The Jd Preferred Position And The Entire Lawyer Ecosystem, Nicholas J. Stamates
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
The recognized right of Indian Tribes to license has been a known reality dating back to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Worcester v. Georgia, 31 U.S. 515 (1832) where state law was found inapplicable on the lands of the Cherokee. However, the modern implications of tribal licensing and regulation have only just begun to be explored in the context of the modern American regulatory system. In fact, the ability of Indian Tribes to license attorneys to practice law within their court systems has largely gone unexamined outside of a few exceptions such as the Tribal Law and Order Act …
Measuring Personality And Animal Treatment Attitudes With The Pet Scale, Zackery J. Hilton
Measuring Personality And Animal Treatment Attitudes With The Pet Scale, Zackery J. Hilton
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Previous research has looked at the association between personality traits and the proclivity, or history, of committing acts that are characterized as animal abuse or animal cruelty. Much research has also found that individuals who exhibit this type of behavior towards animals also tend to exhibit similar behavior towards other individuals, mainly in the form of domestic or child abuse. Previous studies have measured animal abuse using very explicit and extreme criteria, using acts that are without question blatant abuse or torture; however, there is some grey area where many may argue whether certain acts should be considered abuse, which …
Effect Of Sapropterin Dihydrochloride On Neuropsychiatric Functions For Individuals With Phenylketonuria: A Systematic Review, Ricky Lin
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare metabolic disorder that occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 births worldwide. Individuals with PKU cannot properly metabolize phenylalanine (Phe) due to a deficiency in phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), leading to elevated Phe levels and associated cognitive and neuropsychiatric impairments. Although early dietary management has reduced the risk of severe intellectual disability, many individuals with PKU continue to experience deficits in attention, executive functions, and mood regulation. Sapropterin dihydrochloride, a synthetic form of the PAH cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), offers a pharmacological alternative that enhances residual enzyme activity in responsive individuals. While its efficacy in lowering blood Phe …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
The paper reports the influence of using silica fume (SF) and fly ash (FA) as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) on the durability properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC), focusing on sorptivity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and carbonation depth. The study additionally compares the performance of RPC with highstrength concrete (HSC) to assess the relative benefits of RPC. A total of 19 mixtures, including 17 RPC and 2 HSC mixtures, were evaluated. Parameters such as volume of binder content (45%, 50%, 55%, and 60%), water-binder ratios (20%, 25%, and 30%), and SCM proportions (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) were varied; these …
Finding Love On The Spectrum: An Analysis Of Social And Romantic Relationships Of Autistic College Students, Kaylee Spinner
Finding Love On The Spectrum: An Analysis Of Social And Romantic Relationships Of Autistic College Students, Kaylee Spinner
Masters Theses
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in socialization, communication, and developing relationships with others. While many autistic individuals desire to start relationships with others, many do not have a very strong understanding of the use of nonverbal communication or how to develop these connections organically. As autistic individuals have become more open about wanting these resources to form social and romantic relationships, there has been more of a push in the literature to include social skills training for forming social relationships. However, the research on the desire for or development of romantic relationships for autistic individuals is still …

Parasite Communities Of Bluntnose Minnow (Pimephales Notatus) From Several Creeks In East Central Illinois, Md Rowshan Alam
Masters Theses
Parasites of freshwater fish play a vital functional role in aquatic ecosystems, but the spatial and ecological determinants of their prevalence and characteristics are still poorly understood. The current study quantified the diversity, prevalence, and environmental determinants of whole parasite burdens in bluntnose minnows across multiple creeks in central Illinois. Fish sampling and the collection of stream habitat data were conducted during the summers of 2023 and 2024. Fish were examined for parasites using necropsy and histology. A total of 20,817 parasites, predominantly trematodes (Posthodiplostomum spp.), cestodes (Proteocephalus spp), and protozoans, were identified. The most prevalent and abundant …
Assessing The Role Of Daily Thermal Fluctuations In The Performance Of Mitochondrial Energy Transduction Of The Centrarchid, Lepomis Cyanellus, Grayson Hofmann
Assessing The Role Of Daily Thermal Fluctuations In The Performance Of Mitochondrial Energy Transduction Of The Centrarchid, Lepomis Cyanellus, Grayson Hofmann
Masters Theses
Freshwater systems are affected by current climate extremes, forcing species found in these systems to withstand drastic changes in temperature. Temperature changes affect these organisms by altering their metabolic rate and energy balance. Increases in temperature can lead to an increase in oxygen consumption, which ultimately increases the need for more energy production. Mitochondrial energy transduction of green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and many other fish species after a thermal insult, has hardly been explored. This study complements the limited research available on mitochondrial function in similar species, as they ignore the possibility of consecutive thermal events, which are …
Habitat Use And Selection Of Silver Carp In The Lower Wabash River System, Coy B. Blair
Habitat Use And Selection Of Silver Carp In The Lower Wabash River System, Coy B. Blair
Masters Theses
The spatial ecology of non-native species in invaded systems remains relatively poorly understood despite the importance of suitable habitat in the success of invasion. Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix are a highly invasive non-native species with established populations throughout the Midwestern United States. Much research has focused on habitat use of bigheaded carp in large river systems, though invasion risk remains high in smaller systems, such as tributaries of the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. The Wabash River, a unique system in the Midwest, remains largely un-impounded and is comparable to many of the smaller riverine systems at risk of …
Women Spinning On The Edge: Finding And Redefining The “Spinster” In The Witches Of Discworld, Kathryn Ann Fitzmaurice
Women Spinning On The Edge: Finding And Redefining The “Spinster” In The Witches Of Discworld, Kathryn Ann Fitzmaurice
Masters Theses
The word “spinster” has undergone a series of evolutions over the past seven hundred years, first coined to describe the occupation of women engaged in the spinning of plant and animal fibers into thread and yarn in the Middle Ages and later a legal marital status designation used until the 21st century. The connotation associated in social contexts became pejorative. This project’s tracing of the word spinster is used to set up the broader scope looking at how the spinster can be viewed as an archetype, what we can learn through the lenses of gender and feminist theory, and …
