Contraceptive Counseling For Transgender & Gender Diverse Patients: Provider Knowledge & Experience, Kathryn Callahan Jan 2025

Contraceptive Counseling For Transgender & Gender Diverse Patients: Provider Knowledge & Experience, Kathryn Callahan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Many transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have contraceptive needs. Contraceptive counseling in this population is often nuanced due to the diverse experiences and healthcare goals of TGD individuals. Testosterone therapy is an important component of gender affirming care for some transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. A common misconception among patients and providers is the role of testosterone in pregnancy prevention. Testosterone is not an effective form of contraception due to its inconsistent suppression of ovulation. Previous studies have shown that some patients who use testosterone for contraception do so based on guidance from their healthcare provider. Therefore, this …

Atrial Myocyte Ampk Deletion Alters Single Nuclear Profiles In Mice, Julia Nicole Eisen Jan 2025

Atrial Myocyte Ampk Deletion Alters Single Nuclear Profiles In Mice, Julia Nicole Eisen

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide with about 1 in 4 adults expected to develop the condition in their lifetime. AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) is a critical energy sensor and regulates tissue energy and substrate metabolism. Our lab has previously shown that atrial cardiomyocyte-specific cardiac AMPK deletion induces electrophysiologic changes, left atria structural remodeling and spontaneous AF. The mechanism by which loss of AMPK and consequent metabolic stress leads to AF has not yet been elucidated. Using single nuclear RNA sequencing (snRNA sequencing) of mouse heart atria from mice with atrial cardiomyocyte AMPK deletion, we begin to investigate …

The objective of this study is 1) to understand the effect of GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) use in the year prior to conception on risk of developing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and on gestational weight gain (GWG), and 2) to analyze important ethical considerations relevant to research in pregnancy and specifically related to GLP-1RAs.All patients delivering between 2014-2024 with evidence of GLP-1RA exposure in the year prior to conception were identified through electronic medical record (EMR) query with hand review to confirm exposure. GLP-1RA exposed patients were classified according to GLP-1RA indication for use: 1) pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) …

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor And D-Dopachrome Tautomerase As Biomarkers And Key Modulators Of Tumor Progression In Head And Neck Cancer And Melanoma, Caroline Naomi Valdez Jan 2025

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor And D-Dopachrome Tautomerase As Biomarkers And Key Modulators Of Tumor Progression In Head And Neck Cancer And Melanoma, Caroline Naomi Valdez

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) and its homolog D-dopachrome Tautomerase (DDT) are pro-inflammatory cytokines implicated in tumor progression across multiple cancers. Both MIF and DDT act through canonical CD74 and non-canonical CXCR2/4/7 signaling pathways, which contribute to immune suppression and tumor progression. Elevated MIF levels are associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in HNC and contribute to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) resistance in melanoma. DDT’s role in cancer is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the expression and therapeutic potential of MIF and DDT inhibition, focusing on their ability to modulate immune responses and improve survival outcomes as …

True Love Stays, Sydney Thier Jan 2025

True Love Stays, Sydney Thier

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

True Love Stays is a love story, albeit an atypical one. Inspired by the bond I have cultivated with my dog, Ava, it explores the nature of relationships with other people and myself. As an essayist and a filmmaker, I was inspired by the way that writers like Jo Ann Beard, Joan Didion, and Leslie Jamison write about love and how Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alice Birch approach the complexities of identity and relationships on-screen. This collected work is meant to be a multi-genre approach to unpacking how love, desire, and grief interact with identity formation through character-driven writing and an …

River Flowing Through: Lost River Cave And Its Community, Elizabeth Coleman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lost River Cave and Valley is a popular tourist attraction in Bowling Green, Kentucky, that also holds historical significance and importance to the local community. The Cave and Valley have functioned as a business, place of leisure, green space, and place of work for over 200 years. This thesis will explore the different ways that humans and non-humans have worked together to create a sense of place in this natural space. This will be accomplished utilizing “assemblage” theory from the discipline of philosophy. These assemblages will be made up of oral history interviews completed in 1999, one from 2009, and …

The Effects Of Cold Immersion On Motor Consolidation, Manly Barksdale Jan 2025

The Effects Of Cold Immersion On Motor Consolidation, Manly Barksdale

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Several physiological mechanisms elicited by exercise have been shown to enhance the encoding of newly learned motor skills. Cold water immersion (CWI) of at least 14°C (57.2°F), a common recovery tactic following exercise, can elicit the upregulation of similar mechanisms (lactate, norepinephrine, and epinephrine). However, little research has explored a relationship between CWI and motor learning. Therefore, the primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of moderate-duration head-out CWI (HCWI) on motor learning measured via Esports tracking task (ETT) and to compare the results to an exercise (EXS) and control (CON) group. Twenty-nine, right-handed, apparently healthy adults …

Diversity And Phylogeny Of Spider Beetles (Ptinidae: Ptininae) In Coastal Chile And Peru, Jacob Bowen Jan 2025

Diversity And Phylogeny Of Spider Beetles (Ptinidae: Ptininae) In Coastal Chile And Peru, Jacob Bowen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Spider beetles of South America have historically received little systematic study, though now they are the subject of recent diversity surveys and documentation. This investigation contributes to the ongoing exploration of spider beetle diversity in South America by adding records for the recently described Cordielytrum and the yet to be described Furcillifer, as well as constructing phylogenies with new genetic material. MaxEnt was used to create an ecological niche model revealing habitat suitability in Chile and Peru for Cordielytrum, a genus of flightless spider beetles currently known only from Peru. Even with few occurrence records, a model with …

Coffee Farmgate Price And Post-Harvest Processing In Honduras., Isaac Desouza Jan 2025

Coffee Farmgate Price And Post-Harvest Processing In Honduras., Isaac Desouza

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Volatile commodity markets and changing climate expose coffee farmers to price and production risk. Proponents recommend specialty coffee as a strategy to combat price risk, because its unique attributes differentiate it from commodity coffee. Extrinsic and intrinsic attributes define specialty coffee and affect prices at many levels of the supply chain. Despite much work on extrinsic attributes, little is known about how intrinsic attributes relate to farmgate price. Post-harvest processing is itself an intrinsic trait and driver of coffee quality. In 2024 we surveyed 261 coffee farmers from La Paz, Honduras, to uncover relationships between capital, post-harvest processing, and farmgate …

College Students’ Beliefs: Association Between Skin Color And Acceptance, Christopher James Thompson Jan 2025

College Students’ Beliefs: Association Between Skin Color And Acceptance, Christopher James Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

The Multiracial population represents the fastest-growing demographic group in the United States and is expected to more than double by 2060 (Vespa et al., 2018). Despite this rapid increase in the Multiracial population, there is a dearth of research regarding racial identity development, anxiety, and depression on this group. Social inclusion has been recognized as a fundamental human need, and Multiracial individuals may be more likely to be accepted into a majority group if their appearance is racially ambiguous. The current study builds on previous knowledge by utilizing a novel measure developed to examine the beliefs held by Monoracial and …

Implementing Intermittent Fasting Education For Improved A1c Control In Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Dakota Dalton, Elizabeth White, Malinda Hansen, Tasaduq Mir Jan 2025

Implementing Intermittent Fasting Education For Improved A1c Control In Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Dakota Dalton, Elizabeth White, Malinda Hansen, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in the UNTHSC Family Medicine clinic varies among residents, with some advocating robust lifestyle counseling and others relying more on medical management. This leads to inconsistencies in patient education and treatment strategies. Lifestyle interventions such as dietary modifications, are unfortunately too often underutilized in the clinic and in primary care in general, despite strong evidence supporting their efficacy in control of both A1C measurements and random fasting blood sugar, and improved prognosis of diabetes. To address this, we have designed and introduced an intermittent fasting (IF) handout as a supplemental standardized educational …

Maternal Cardiovascular Risk And Lactation: Disparities And Future Directions, Monica Rodriguez, Michele Mccarroll, Caroline Marrs, Kamala P. Tamirisa

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Pregnancy functions as a cardiopulmonary stress test, unmasking underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD) or heightening the future CVD risk following adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). Multiple studies have demonstrated strong associations between APOs, higher mortality rates, and an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Black women, in particular, have a disproportionately higher burden of coronary artery disease related mortality, with an earlier onset compared to women of other racial and ethnic groups. Increasing allostatic load due to both acute and chronic racial discrimination may potentially be a key factor driving poorer pregnancy outcomes. Breastfeeding has a protective effect on allostatic load and is …

Effect Of Praziquantel Treatment On The Nutritional Status Of Children Infected With Schistosoma Haematobium, Louis Fok, Hongying Dai, David Brett-Major, Abebe Animut, Berhanu Erko, John Linville, Yohannes Negash, Abraham Degarege

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

This quasi-experimental trial examined the relationship between Schistosoma haematobium infection and nutritional status, and the impact of single dose praziquantel (PZQ) therapy on undernutrition. A total of 353 children were examined, 112 of which were infected with S. haematobium and treated with PZQ. Children's heights, weights, and mid-upper arm circumferences (MUAC) were measured at baseline and one month post-treatment. Infected children had significantly smaller mean BMI-for-age z-scores (BAZ) (-1.16 vs. 0.11, p < 0.01) and weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ) (-0.61 vs. -0.31, p = 0.03) than the uninfected ones at baseline. S. haematobium infection was associated with underweight (adjusted OR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.63-1.90). One month after treatment, BAZ, WAZ, …
