The Role Of The Female Reproductive Cycle In Social Communication And Relevance To Mental Health, Julissa Amaro Castillo, Fernando Dominguez, Ariana Hinojosa, Giselle Padilla, Mario Gil
Research Symposium
The female reproductive cycle is characterized by fluctuating hormones, including estrogens and progesterone, that are involved in reproductive health; however, they have also been linked to disorders like Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), mood swings, depression and others. The goal of this study is to use the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) as an animal model to examine the influence of the reproductive cycle and hormones on behavior. Scent-marking activity known as flank marking is exhibited by territorial or sociable animals. In essence, animals mark their territory or convey information such as reproductive status by rubbing their flanks or …

Effects Of Arginine-Vasopressin In The Brain On Cardiovascular Function In A Psychosocial Stress Animal Model, Esmeralda Lopez-Garcia, Ariana V. Hinojosa, Esperanza I. Alaniz, Fernando Dominguez, Giselle Padilla, Mario Gil
Research Symposium
Background: Psychosocial stress impacts cardiovascular health, increasing the risk of events like myocardial infarction (MI), stress cardiomyopathy, and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Anxiety. However, our understanding of the biological mechanisms that connect psychosocial stress with negative cardiovascular and psychological outcomes remains incomplete. Arginine-vasopressin (AVP) is linked to both mental and physical health by regulating social behavior, blood pressure, and anxiety-related behaviors. This study investigates the potential cardioprotective effects of the neuropeptide AVP, in an effort to generate evidence that it may strengthen heart function and lessen the severity of adverse cardiovascular events caused by stress, brain …

Traffic stops are the most common form of police-initiated contact with members of the public. The sheer volume of traffic stops combined with their use as a pretext to surveil Black and Latiné communities has generated substantial scholarship and movements for police reform. Yet this commentary assumes that the subjects of traffic stops are U.S. citizens. At the same time, scholarship on the intersection of criminal and immigration law and the convergence of their enforcement methods focuses on traffic stops as the immediate entry point for removal proceedings. This Article addresses the gap in literature by describing the experience of …

Nucleoredoxin (Nxn) encodes a multi-functional enzyme with oxidoreductase activity that regulates many different signaling pathways and cellular processes in a redox-dependent manner. Rare NXN mutations are reported in individuals with recessive Robinow syndrome, which involves mesomelic skeletal dysplasia, short stature, craniofacial dysmorphisms, and incompletely penetrant heart and palate defects. Here we report that Nxn is expressed in the ventral diencephalon and developing pituitary gland, and that Nxn deficient mice have pituitary dysmorphology and craniofacial abnormalities that include defects in the skull base and cleft palate. Nxn mutant mice exhibit reduced WNT signaling and reduced differentiation of pituitary stem …

The Congo Basin rainforest and adjacent Lower Guinea Forest constitute the second largest tract of lowland tropical rainforest in the world. As with the rest of the continent, human population is increasing rapidly and forest degradation is ubiquitous. Forest degradation through logging has pervasive negative effects on ecosystems, but selective logging is considered less impactful than clearcutting. Recent research in Afrotropical forest shows that certain avian species and guilds are more affected by selective logging than others (e.g., specialist insectivores such as followers of Dorylus driver ants); however, the mechanisms behind these patterns are poorly known. In an eight-year mist-netting …

Biophysical Insights Into Immunoglobulin Interactions With Influenza Viral Proteins, Yuanyuan He
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Influenza viruses cause a significant burden across the globe leading to thousands of mortalities annually. It remains challenging to acquire long-lasting immunity against influenza viruses due to the rapid rate of mutation within circulating strains and limited protection provided by seasonal flu vaccines. While the generation of influenza-specific antibodies provides a major source of protection against viral infection, our understanding of how biophysical properties of antibody-antigen interaction influence antibody protection against influenza viruses remains elusive. To address these challenges, we first developed imaging-based approaches in combination with computational models to elucidate the extent and mechanism of antibody inhibition of influenza …

Gene therapy with adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors requires knowledge of their tropism within the body. Here we analyze the tropism of 10 naturally occurring AAV serotypes (AAV3B, AAV4, AAV5, AAV6, AAV7, AAV8, AAV9, AAVrh8, AAVrh10, and AAVrh74) following systemic delivery into male and female mice. A transgene-expressing ZsGreen and Cre recombinase was used to identify transduction in a cell-dependent manner based on fluorescence. Cre-driven activation of tdTomato fluorescence offered superior sensitivity for transduced cells. All serotypes except AAV3B and AAV4 had high liver tropism. Fluorescence activation revealed transduction of unexpected tissues, including adrenals, testes, and ovaries. Rare transduced cells within …

Over 250,000 gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) are placed annually in the United States. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the most widely used clinical method for placing G-tubes within the stomach. However, endoscope detectability is limited due to the scattering of light by tissues. Poor organ visibility and low sensitivity of the palpation techniques cause blind needle insertions, which cause colon/liver perforations, abdominal bleeding, and gastric resections. Additionally, imaging artifacts and the poor distinguishability between water-filled tissues make ultrasound (US) imaging-based techniques incompatible with G-tube placement. The risk of ionizing radiation exposure and the confinement of fluoroscopy to radiology suites limits its …

Associations Between Prepulse Inhibiton And Visual Executive Attention In Children With The 22q11 Deletion Syndrome, Christina Sobin, Karen Kiley-Brabeck, Maria Karayiorgou
Departmental Papers (PH)
The 22q11 deletion syndrome (DS) results in the loss of approximately 30 gene copies and is associated with possible physical anomalies, varied learning disabilities, and a specific cluster of neurocognitive deficits, including primary impairment in working memory, executive visual attention, and sensorimotor processing. Retrospective studies have suggested that children with 22q11DS are at 25 times greater risk of developing schizophrenia, thus specification of early brain network vulnerabilities among children with 22q11DS is critical. Previously, we reported that children with 22q11DS as compared with sibling controls had selective deficits in visual executive attention, and subsequently found lowered prepulse inhibition (PPI) in …

The mechanisms by which early chronic lead (Pb) exposure alters brain development have not been identified. We examined neuroimmune system effects in C57BL/6J mice with Pb exposure, including levels that may be common among children in lower socioeconomic income environments. Pups were exposed via dams’ drinking water from birth to post-natal day 28 to low, high or no Pb conditions. We compared gene expression of neuroinflammatory markers (study 1); and microglial mean cell body volume and mean cell body number in dentate gyrus, and dentate gyrus volume (study 2). Blood Pb levels in exposed animals at sacrifice (post-natal day 28) …

Lower Pre-Pulse Inhibition In Children With The 22q11 Deletion Syndrome, Christina Sobin, Karen Kiley-Brabeck, Maria Karayiorgou
Departmental Papers (PH)
Objective: The 22q11 deletion syndrome is associated with a range of possible physical anomalies, probable ongoing learning disabilities, and a specific constellation of neuropsychological deficits, including impairments in selective and executive visual attention, working memory, and sensorimotor functioning. It has been estimated that 25% of the children with 22q11 deletion syndrome go on to develop schizophrenia in late adolescence or adulthood. This is of urgent concern. Specification of early brain network vulnerabilities may provide a basis for early intervention while indicating critical links between genes and severe psychiatric illness. Neuropsychological studies of children with 22q11 deletion syndrome have implicated an …

Production And Characterization Of Muc13 Monoclonal Antibodies For Differential Expression In Cancers, Shabnam Malik, Daniel Zubieta, Mohammed Sikander
Research Symposium
Background: MUC13 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a critical role in the progression of various cancers, including liver, pancreatic, colon, and ovarian cancer. While its presence and implications in these malignancies have been recognized, the development of specific antibodies targeting MUC13 is limited. This study aims to produce a monoclonal antibody against MUC13 and evaluate its utility in assessing differential expressions associated with cancers progression.
Methodology: We employed hybridoma technology to generate specific monoclonal antibodies against MUC13. Mouse splenocytes were immunized with recombinant MUC13 protein and subsequently fused with myeloma cells to create hybridomas. Positive clones were selected …

“Time Is Our Only Ally!”: Indigenous Heroism And Native Slipstream In Turok, Son Of Stone, Justin Wigard
Heroism Science
In this article, I draw on Frederick Luis Aldama’s framework of Graphic Indigeneity to revisit the long history of an Indigenous hero figure in comics: Turok, a pre-Columbian Mandan warrior lost in a prehistoric space known as the Lost Valley. First appearing in Dell’s Four Color Comics #596 (1954), Turok has appeared throughout comics history for nearly 70 years, primarily written and drawn by white creative teams, yet a visually, narratively prominent Indigenous hero in the comics page, one who has periodically been a top-selling popular character in the comics industry. To this end, I argue that Turok is a …

Background: The identification of Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. coagulans (recently reclassified as S. coagulans) was part of a previous retrospective study on antibiotic resistance in urinary tract infections (UTIs) in older adults conducted at a Tamaulipas state hospital in 2023 (Esparza 2023, unpublished data). S. coagulans is an emerging human pathogen, initially associated with veterinary infections, particularly dermatitis and otitis in dogs. Like other Staphylococcus species, it is known for its biofilm-forming ability, which enhances its persistence and resistance to treatment. Recent studies have linked S. coagulans to severe human infections, including endocarditis, meningitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly in patients with …

Toward Better Digital Tool Designs To Assist Students On Math Assessments, Hongwen Guo, Matthew S. Johnson, Luis Saldivia, Michelle Worthington
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊
Digital tools in digitally based math assessments are designed to help students solve math problems more effectively. However, inappropriate use of these tools can lead to negative outcomes. Using process data from NAEP, we generalized the differential item functioning methodologies and conducted a systematic investigation of the effectiveness of tool uses. Three measures were proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital tool on an item: its popularity (the proportion of students who used it), its impact on item score (the score gain/loss after matching on performance score and other tool uses), and its impact on item response time (the …

The continuous use of antibiotics is associated with many complications in the poultry industry. Probiotics have emerged as a viable alternative over the past few decades to counter the adverse effects of antibiotics. No candidate probiotic microorganisms have been fully evaluated in the poultry industry for their effectiveness as potential probiotics in guinea fowls (GFs) compared to chickens. Recently, a metagenome evaluation of GFs in our laboratory revealed a predominance of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) and actinobacteria class of bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study is to evaluate a well-known lactic acid probiotic bacterium (L. reuteri) …

Scupa: Single-Cell Unified Polarization Assessment Of Immune Cells Using The Single-Cell Foundation Model, Wendao Liu, Zhongming Zhao
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
MOTIVATION: Immune cells undergo cytokine-driven polarization in response to diverse stimuli, altering their transcriptional profiles and functional states. This dynamic process is central to immune responses in health and diseases, yet a systematic approach to assess cytokine-driven polarization in single-cell RNA sequencing data has been lacking.
RESULTS: To address this gap, we developed single-cell unified polarization assessment (Scupa), the first computational method for comprehensive immune cell polarization assessment. Scupa leverages data from the Immune Dictionary, which characterizes cytokine-driven polarization states across 14 immune cell types. By integrating cell embeddings from the single-cell foundation model Universal Cell Embeddings, Scupa effectively identifies …

Could Psilocin Rescue Chronic, Stress-Accelerated, Transcriptional Aging In Brain?, Danny R. Craig, Eric M. Blalock
Journal of Pharmacology & Nutritional Sciences
Brain aging (BA) processes are complex, often affect multiple systems, and frequently lead to cognitive decline and increased susceptibility to insults. BA appears to be a primary risk for the development of many prominent neurodegenerative pathologies. The US Census Bureau predicts that the aging population (65+) will represent a greater proportion of the US population than children (under 18) by 2034, dramatically increasing the burden on health-care infrastructure.17 Several mechanisms of stress driven, aging-related neurologic dysfunction have been advanced in the past 50 years and include: Stress hormone exposure and glucocorticoid cascade;7, 16 calcium ion dyshomeostasis;8 allostatic …
