Testosterone: The Forgotten Female Hormone, Katherine A. Horner Pa-C
Testosterone: The Forgotten Female Hormone, Katherine A. Horner Pa-C
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to review the current and past use of testosterone as a replacement hormone for women in peri- and early postmenopause. Healthcare providers are often not educated about testosterone as a sex hormone with profound effects on the female body. Yet, clinicians who treat women in the 4th and 5th decades of life should be familiar with the function of testosterone, clinical symptoms associated with declining levels, women’s perceptions about peri- and postmenopause as well as side effects of testosterone, and the implications of its use as a replacement hormone on other body systems. …
New Drainage Records And Revised Ranges For Sympatric Pirate Perch Species In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Tyler Muller, Bryson Hilburn, Lily Hughes
New Drainage Records And Revised Ranges For Sympatric Pirate Perch Species In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Tyler Muller, Bryson Hilburn, Lily Hughes
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
We report updated ranges for four sympatric species of Pirate Perches following a recent taxonomic revision of Aphredoderus. Using observations from recent sampling by the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences and reidentifying cataloged specimens from the Georgia Museum of Natural History and Auburn University Museum collections, we were able to refine the distributions of four species throughout a complicated sympatric zone spanning coastal plain drainages in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. We find that A. gibbosus is present in low numbers in the Flint, Escambia, Choctawhatchee, and Chattahoochee basins. These additional records nearly link the previously reported disjunct …

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Background: American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) annual meetings provide opportunities to present research abstracts to a sub-specialty audience. However, these abstracts may undergo less rigorous peer review and may be associated with risks of non-publication or publication bias. This study aims to evaluate and analyze publication rates and potential factors that contribute to non-publication. Methods: We examined all abstracts (paper, hardboard posters, and electronic posters) accepted for presentation (n=1093) at the AAPOS annual meetings between 2015 and 2019. A comprehensive search was conducted to quantify the abstracts that were published to a peer reviewed journal within three …

Characterizing Core Journals In Ophthalmology Literature Using Bradford’S Law: A Bibliometric Analysis, Leo Meller, Vasan Jagadeesh, Michael Oca, Katherine Wilson, Jeffrey Lee, Sally Baxter, Nathan Scott
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Purpose: The exponential growth of ophthalmology research can be challenging to keep up with for trainees, researchers and clinicians and little has been done to identify core ophthalmology journals. We thus applied Bradford’s law to characterize core journals in ophthalmology.
Design: Cross-sectional bibliometric analysis
Methods: Two sets of top 10 National Library of Medicine indexed ophthalmology journals based on h-index and impact factor (IF) were combined to create top 14 journals used for analysis. The references from all articles published in these journals in one randomized quarter were compiled into a citation database. Bradford’s law was applied to identify zonal …

The Relationship Between Open Access Article Publishing And Short-Term Citations In Ophthalmology, Hassaam S Choudhry, Carter Burton, Luis Cupertino, Matthew Montani, Riya Patel, Sri Guttikonda, Albert S Khouri
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Purpose: In recent years academic journals have increasingly transitioned to a paid open access (OA) model. The present study aims to identify whether OA or subscription access (SA) influences short-term citations of articles in ophthalmology. Methods: The Dimensions database was queried in October 2022 for articles published in 2019 in the following journals with both open and subscription access options: Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, and British Journal of Ophthalmology. Article access, citations, country, article type (review, letter/viewpoint/comment, original investigation), study type (basic science/animal model, case report/series, clinical trial, NA, observational) …
“Listen To Your Body First And Me Second,” Embodied Learning Readiness In Yoga Teacher Education, Janel Usry
“Listen To Your Body First And Me Second,” Embodied Learning Readiness In Yoga Teacher Education, Janel Usry
Educational Studies Dissertations
Embodied learning happens when thoughts and actions are informed by sensing and noticing inner bodily states. Yoga is commonly cited as a mind-body practice that enhances embodied learning, yet there is a gap in yoga teacher education literature pertaining to this competency. A qualitative phenomenological study was used to understand how embodied learning was exhibited amongst alumni of a residential yoga teacher training. Data was examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to determine in what ways, if any, the yoga teacher training altered trainees’ relationships with their bodies. The findings showed a process of embodied learning readiness: students pursued yoga …

The Menagerie Of Berggasse 19: An Animal Studies Re-Reading Of Freud’S Classic Case Studies, Samuel Weeks, Beatrice Barjon
College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers
This article explores Freud’s original engagement with animal symbols, characters, and stories in his case studies “Little Hans,” “The Rat Man,” and “The Wolf Man.” Employing insights from animal studies, the article examines Freud’s views on the human-animal continuum as well as the phenomena of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, via which human characteristics are affixed to animals and animal characteristics to humans. Also examined is the symbolism surrounding the animals appearing in the fairy tales referenced by Freud’s patients, including “Little Red Riding Hood.” We end by considering the contributions that Freud can make to the expanding field of animal studies.
Characterizing The Effects Of Rage Upregulation In Lung Development, Derek Michael Clarke
Characterizing The Effects Of Rage Upregulation In Lung Development, Derek Michael Clarke
Theses and Dissertations
The Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is a transmembrane, multi-ligand cell surface receptor highly expressed in pulmonary tissue, where it plays a critical role in mediating inflammatory responses. Under chronic toxicant exposure, often associated with cigarette, e-cigarette, and diesel particulate, RAGE transitions from a protective to a deleterious state, contributing to pathological processes. In adult models, RAGE's role in the development of lung disease has been well studied, yet in the context of lung development RAGE has not been well studied with a small number of clinical papers finding increased levels of RAGE in bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD) and respiratory distress …

Faculty Research 2025
Cardiac amyloidosis is a secondary phenomenon of an already pre-existing chronic condition. Whether car- diac amyloidosis represents one of the complications post myocardial infarction (MI) has yet to be fully under- stood. Here, we show that amyloidosis occurs after MI and that amyloid fibers are composed of macrophage- derived serum amyloid A 3 (SAA3) monomers. SAA3 overproduction in macrophages is triggered by exosomal communication from cardiac stromal cells (CSCs), which, in response to MI, activate the expression of a platelet aggregation-inducing type I transmembrane glycoprotein, Podoplanin (PDPN). CSC PDPN+ -derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are enriched in SAA3, and exosomal …

Implementing Standardized Patients In Simulation In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Taylor A. Murray
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Abstract
The integration of standardized patients (SPs) in simulation-based learning has emerged as a transformative approach in undergraduate nursing education. By providing nursing students with the opportunity to engage with trained actors simulating real-life patient scenarios, SPs offer a safe and controlled environment to develop essential clinical skills. This research explores the impact of SPs on promoting student confidence and enhancing their practical skills in nursing practice. Implementing SPs into nursing education not only supports students in refining their assessment and communication abilities but also prepares them for the complexities of patient care in real-world settings. Ultimately, this study aims …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Shales in the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation within the Upper Yangtze region preserve critical information about primitive oceans. Furthermore, these shales serve as vital source rocks and reservoirs, having demonstrated considerable potential for shale gas exploration. Methods Using seismic, borehole, and outcrop data, this study investigated the shale strata and their distribution in the Qiongzhusi Formation through comparative analysis. Accordingly, the sweet-spot interval was determined. Results and conclusions The results indicate that the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in the Upper Yangtze region can be divided into the first and second members (also referred to as the Qiong 1 and …
