The plants of the genus Ferula L. have long been recognized for their significant roles in traditional medicine in the Middle East and Asia, a heritage that we deeply respect and appreciate. A diverse array of biologically active compounds, particularly concentrated in the roots of various Ferula species, accounts for their broad range of medicinal properties and applications in folk medicine. Many species within this genus are noted for their high content of phenolic compounds, which exhibit potent antioxidant activity and demonstrate substantial antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

The mechanism(s) underlying gut microbial metabolite (GMM) contribution towards alcohol-mediated cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unknown. Herein we observe elevation in circulating phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln), a known CVD-associated GMM, in individuals living with alcohol use disorder. In a male murine binge-on-chronic alcohol model, we confirm gut microbial reorganization, elevation in PAGln levels, and the presence of cardiovascular pathophysiology. Fecal microbiota transplantation from pair-/alcohol-fed mice into naïve male mice demonstrates the transmissibility of PAGln production and the CVD phenotype. Independent of alcohol exposure, pharmacological-mediated increases in PAGln elicits direct cardiac and vascular dysfunction. Background: Children with developmental disabilities often face barriers to engaging in physical activity (PA), impacting their health and quality of life. Parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) have shown promise to reduce these barriers, but little research explores online PMIs for parents of children with developmental disabilities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and impact of a multi-site collaborative online parent-mediated PA intervention on stress levels and self-efficacy among parents of children with developmental disabilities over a 12-week period.

This study explores the global impact of climate finance on wealth and income inequality, utilizing the IV-GMM model to capture nuanced relationships. Key findings indicate that climate finance effectively reduces both forms of inequality, benefiting low-income populations and suggesting it as a viable tool for inequality reduction. Notably, the impact of climate finance is asymmetric: countries with lower initial inequality levels experience more pronounced benefits, while the effect lessens as inequality increases. Additionally, climate risks—represented by natural disasters— worsen inequality, underscoring climate finance’s dual role in directly reducing inequality and indirectly mitigating disaster impacts. This study explores the impact of Monetary Policy Uncertainty (MPU) on Agricultural Climate Risk (AGCR) in China, particularly in light of recent climate vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector, highlighted by recent floods. Using balanced panel data from 31 provinces between 2010 and 2022, diagnostic tests confirm cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity, and the Westerlund cointegration test indicates a long-term relationship among variables. Results from generalized panel quantile regression show that MPU positively affects AGCR, especially at lower quantiles, but this effect can be moderated by agricultural insurance. In recent years, global climate risk has been on the rise, with extreme weather and climate-related events becoming more frequent and severe, garnering increased attention. We explore the impact of climate risk on employment adjustments using a dataset of small, medium and micro enterprises in China. Our findings indicate that as climate risk increases, employment adjustment rates increase, net employment growth rates decrease, and job destruction intensifies. These results remain robust in tests for endogeneity and robustness tests. Specifically, extreme weather events impact companies’ factories and production facilities, increasing operating costs and affecting overall production and sales. As a result, …

Using a global monthly unbalanced panel dataset of 70 countries from January 2020 to May 2023, we first examine the impact of COVID-19 on global trade. The empirical results show a detrimental impact of COVID-19 on countries’ foreign trade, which persists over six months. We evaluate the robustness of our findings by employing an alternative dependent variable and different estimators. Our main findings hold and two features of our results standout: first, that COVID-19 hurt international trade more for non-Asian countries; and second, that sectoral sensitivity to COVID-19 was heterogenous. These results have important policy implications.

The expense of mutual fund sustained a substantial growth in recent years, but do the expense of fund genuinely contribute to the fund performance? We examine the relation between the expense of Chinese actively managed equity funds and their performance. We show that the expense has a negative effect on the excess return of funds, which is consistent with the well-established negative relation from previous research of the mutual fund in U.S. In subsequent heterogeneity analysis, we also find that the fund’s return volatility strengthens the negative effects, whereas its age and size did not. Smokefree laws (SFL) and policies could deter smoking by strengthening anti-smoking norms, impacting cessation behaviour due to decreased social acceptability of smoking in public spaces. With socioeconomic status (SES) affecting smoking risk factors, disparities in health outcomes post-SFL implementation are likely. Furthermore, regional and international assessments show Malaysia’s poor performance due to ineffective smoking bans and enforcement. The bipolar disorder (BD) risk gene ANK3 encodes the scaffolding protein AnkyrinG (AnkG). In neurons, AnkG regulates polarity and ion channel clustering at axon initial segments and nodes of Ranvier. Disruption of neuronal AnkG causes BD-like phenotypes in mice. During development, AnkG is also expressed at comparable levels in oligodendrocytes and facilitates the efficient assembly of paranodal junctions. However, the physiological roles of glial AnkG in the mature nervous system, and its contributions to BD-like phenotypes, remain unexplored. Currently there are no effective treatments for an array of neurodegenerative disorders to a large part because cell-based models fail to recapitulate disease. Here we develop a reproducible human iPSC-based model where laser axotomy causes retrograde axon degeneration leading to neuronal cell death. Time-lapse confocal imaging revealed that damage triggers an apoptotic wave of mitochondrial fission proceeding from the site of injury to the soma. We demonstrate that this apoptotic wave is locally initiated in the axon by dual leucine zipper kinase (DLK). Accurate predictions of herbicide dissipation endpoints are essential for making environmental management decisions, estimating the duration of weed control, and deciding crop replant and rotation options. The performance of the single first-order (SFO), first-order multiple-compartment (FOMC), bi-exponential (BEXP), first-order double-exponential decay (FODED), and first-order two-compartment (FOTC) was evaluated to describe S-metolachlor dissipation. Results showed that the BEXP and FOTC were not appropriate. The FODED was ranked as the top model with the lowest Akaike's information criterion (AICc) value among the other three candidate models and was followed by the FOMC model. Here, we present the minimal versatile genetic perturbation technology (mvGPT), a flexible toolkit designed for simultaneous and orthogonal gene editing, activation, and repression in human cells.
