“City On A Hill”: The Superiority Complex Of Ancient Athens And The United States, Caroline Soergel '28 Dec 2024

“City On A Hill”: The Superiority Complex Of Ancient Athens And The United States, Caroline Soergel '28

Best First-Year Seminar Writing

After times of intense conflict, both ancient Athens and the United States were left to rebuild their states. Athenians and European settlers had the opportunity to reestablish their government and unify their people by building key monuments. Athenians were recovering from around 50 years of fighting in the Persian Wars, and the United States was recovering from wars with Great Britain. Visual rhetoric, the use of visual elements to communicate meaning, was employed in Athens and America for two purposes: 1) to eulogize their impressive victories over their foes and 2) to establish a common enemy. For ancient Athens, their …

The 'Biographer' And Her 'Subject': Vita Sackville-West's Influence On Virginia Woolf, Sydney Sherman '28

Best First-Year Seminar Writing

Woolf and Sackville-West's relationship has been scrutinized and celebrated since its beginning. While deeply affectionate, their bond also blurred boundaries between personal intimacy and artistic exploitation. Woolf immortalized Sackville-West in her 1928 novel Orlando, a work both heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of gender fluidity and critiqued for its appropriation of Sackville-West's life and identity. Orlando, The Letters of Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf, and Portrait of a Marriage serve as unique lenses to observe the relationship between Woolf and Sackville-West. Orlando is a testament to the true love between a biographer and her Orlando, but as an artist, Woolf's …

In utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) utilizes fetal immune tolerance to achieve durable chimerism without conditioning or immunosuppression during a unique window in fetal development. Though donor cells have been observed within the nervous system following in utero injection, the timeline and distribution of cellular trafficking across the blood-brain barrier following IUHCT is not well understood. We injected 20 × 10

Species Detection And Discovery Of Zoanthidea Symbiotic With Deep-Sea Gorgonians, Saige Jost Dec 2024

Species Detection And Discovery Of Zoanthidea Symbiotic With Deep-Sea Gorgonians, Saige Jost

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Symbiotic marine invertebrates known as Zoanthidea, from the phylum Cnidaria, live on a wide diversity of other organisms. Deep-sea corals such as Gorgonians are one of these clades of hosts. These octocorals and their Zoanthidean symbionts are challenging to collect and consequently difficult to study. However, the Evolution of Marine Symbioses Laboratory at Nova Southeastern University has obtained several samples from the Yale Peabody Museum and other museums or universities with the goal of expanding our knowledge of the diversity of Zoanthideans. Until recently, the existing taxonomic system has been based on morphological characters. A competing molecular parataxonomic system has …

A Modeling Framework For Flocculated Cohesive Sediment Transport In The Current Bottom Boundary Layer, Jorge A. Penaloza-Giraldo, Liangyi Yue, Tian Jian Hsu, Bernhard Vowinckel, Andrew Manning, Eckart Meiburgc

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Cohesive sediment transport, where its settling velocity is controlled by the flocculation process, is a crucial component in determining biochemical cycles, fate of pollutants, and morphodynamics in many aquatic ecosystems. In this study, a modeling framework is presented to investigate how flocculation influences cohesive sediment transport in the current bottom boundary layer in dilute conditions, consistent with the calibration range of the flocculation model. From a local analysis of floc dynamics in homogenous turbulence, we identify that the floc size distribution is mainly controlled by floc cohesion and yield strength. The uncertainty in fractal dimension plays a minor role for …

Matter Of Federation Of Orgs. For The N.Y. State Mentally Disabled, Inc. V Lindsay

All Decisions

The landlord commenced a holdover proceeding against the tenant for breach of the lease. The court held that the landlord's notice of default and termination notice were insufficient to maintain the holdover proceeding, as they did not comply with the lease's cure period requirements. The court reversed the Appellate Term's decision and dismissed the petition.

Boyd-Ward V. Lennox Dec 2024

Boyd-Ward V. Lennox

All Decisions

The landlord initiated a holdover proceeding to evict the tenant, alleging the tenant failed to vacate after termination of the license. The tenant, initially pro se, entered into a stipulation agreeing to vacate but later moved to vacate the stipulation, citing waived defenses. The court vacated the stipulation, finding the tenant had meritorious defenses, including improper service of the predicate notice, which was required under RPAPL § 735(1). The court dismissed the case for failure to properly serve the predicate notice, as required by RPL § 232-a. Strict procedural compliance in summary eviction proceedings is critical to sustain claims.

Houston Triangle Iii Llc V. Biswas Dec 2024

Houston Triangle Iii Llc V. Biswas

All Decisions

The court dismissed the landlord's illegal sublet claim for insufficient predicate notices. The notices failed to allege specific facts necessary to establish an illegal sublet under Rent Stabilization Code §2525.6. The landlord's evidence, presented only after the case commenced, could not cure the defective notices. The tenant's motion to dismiss for failure to state a cause of action was granted, as predicate notices cannot be amended. The dismissal was without prejudice, preserving the landlord's ability to recommence proceedings.

Chemically induced proximity modalities such as targeted protein degradation (TPD) hold promise for expanding the number of proteins that can be manipulated pharmacologically. However, current TPD strategies are often limited to proteins with preexisting ligands. Molecular glues (e.g. glutarimide ligands for CUL4CRBN), offer the potential to target undruggable proteins. Yet, their rational design is largely unattainable due to the unpredictability of the ‘gain-of-function’ nature of the glue interaction upon chemical modification of ligands. We recently reported a covalent trans-labelling glue mechanism which we named ‘Template-assisted covalent modification’, where an electrophile decorated BRD4 inhibitor was effectively delivered to …

Background: Human gliomas are classified using isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) status as a prognosticator; however, the influence of genetic differences and treatment effects on ensuing immunity remains unclear.

Methods: In this study, we used sequential single-cell transcriptomics on 144 678 and spectral cytometry on over 2 million immune cells encompassing 48 human gliomas to decipher their immune landscape.

Results: We identified 22 distinct immune cell types that contribute to glioma immunity. Specifically, brain-resident microglia (MG) were reduced with a concomitant increase in CD8+ T lymphocytes during glioma recurrence independent of IDH status. In contrast, IDH-wild type-associated patterns, such as an abundance …

Prioritising Tax Claims In Corporate Insolvency: Boon Or Bane?, Pratik Datta Mr., Riddhi Vyas Ms. Dec 2024

Prioritising Tax Claims In Corporate Insolvency: Boon Or Bane?, Pratik Datta Mr., Riddhi Vyas Ms.

National Law School Business Law Review

In September 2022, the Supreme Court in State Tax Officer v. Rainbow Papers Limited interpreted the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 to treat the State Government as a secured creditor for the tax dues claimed. This decision coincides with the ongoing broader policy reassessment on the treatment of tax dues under the Code by the Department of Revenue and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. In this case comment, we discuss the facts and holding of Rainbow and critically examine the case through the current observations and post-Rainbow scholarly discourses. Further, the comment inquires into the question of the prioritisation of …

The enactment of the principal arbitration legislation in India, the Arbitration & Conciliation Act, 1996, notably coincided with the enactment of the United Kingdom’s Arbitration Act, 1996. While both turned 25 years old in 2021, the two jurisdictions have seen distinct paths in the development and evolution of their respective arbitration landscapes. London, traditionally, has always been a significant seat of arbitration for parties around the world due to its consistent pro-arbitration outlook. India, on the other hand, had a questionable decade following the enactment of the Indian Arbitration Act, but is now gradually moving towards establishing itself as a …

Functionality Of Takeover Regimes In Asia, Abhishek Dadoo Mr., Shruti Kunisetty Ms.

National Law School Business Law Review

Takeover laws play a critical role in regulating the market for corporate control and therefore directly impact public M&A in a country. While the last few decades have seen a rapid evolution in the takeover deal space, the takeover regimes in certain developing countries, like India, are at a nascent stage. There is abundant scholarship surrounding the developed takeover regimes, like that of the United Kingdom and the United States. In this article, the authors seek to investigate the local peculiarities of the developing countries to which the Anglo-American takeovers regimes have been imported and the ways in which they …

Codification Of Arbitrator’S Duty Of Disclosure: Lessons From The Indian Experience, Meenal Garg Ms. Dec 2024

Codification Of Arbitrator’S Duty Of Disclosure: Lessons From The Indian Experience, Meenal Garg Ms.

National Law School Business Law Review

A recent consultation paper by the U.K. Law Commission has opined that U.K. arbitration law must consider codifying the duty of disclosure. On the other hand, countries like India already prescribe a set of circumstances that are required to be disclosed by an arbitrator to prevent any possible bias. This paper analyses the statutory codification of the duty of disclosure in India and opines as to how the Indian experience can be used as a road map by countries like the U.K. for codification of this duty.

Mutation Of The Trademark Doctrine: Analysing Actionable Use To Reconcile Brand Identities With Constitutional Safeguards, M.P. Ram Mohan Mr., Aditya Gupta Mr.

National Law School Business Law Review

With continuous and consistent use, trademarks can come to signify opulence, luxury, and dependability; and become cultural icons. The modern trademark doctrine must accommodate these realities of the marketplace while, at the same time, accommodating the flourishing exchange of expressive uses through unauthorised use of trademarks. This push-and-pull has resulted in the complete obliteration of what were already obscure boundaries between the expressive and marketing spheres of trademark law. The present study examines the normative foundations of the modern trademark doctrine, drawing from American, English, and European trademark jurisprudence. These foundations are then extrapolated to Indian trademark law to create …

Defensive Publications Series

Application development and testing can entail the hosting of thousands of mobile devices that are physically closely spaced within a lab, each device connected to a network. Networks can be provisioned over Wi-Fi or USB network adapters. However, Wi-Fi performance degrades as the number of devices sharing spectrum/channels increases. Wi-Fi congestion and interference has to be mitigated with radio frequency (RF) shielding, which is expensive and can be difficult to maintain. USB wired network adapters can be clunky and finicky. This disclosure describes a network switch with USB ports integrated with USB ethernet adapters and USB power delivery. The network …

Bounded By Place: Rural Students, College Knowledge, Educational Motivation, And College Going, Sarah Rutt Williams, Frimpomaa Ampaw, Skylar R. Duke, Anne M. Hornak

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Rural students face inequitable access to educational opportunities when compared to their suburban and urban counterparts (Koricich et al., 2018; Ovink et al., 2018), and their postsecondary experiences and outcomes remain understudied. Research on the role of college knowledge in the persistence of this educational inequity is particularly scarce. Using a non-experimental survey design, the present study seeks to understand the effect of rural students’ college knowledge on their postsecondary intentions. We use surveys completed by rural high school seniors and logistic regression to analyze the relationship between students’ college knowledge, their motivation, and their postsecondary plans. Our findings show …
