Staff Education On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Ngozi Nwasuruba
Staff Education On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Ngozi Nwasuruba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project involved a staff education program resulting from an identified practice gap. The nursing staff lacked the knowledge and skills necessary about Type 2 diabetes to teach their patients self-care management of their condition. The setting was an outpatient family practice clinic in Houston, Texas. The facility director reported that the clinic patients were experiencing unstable and high blood sugar due to their lack of knowledge about diabetes self-care management. The nurses were not knowledgeable enough about diabetes care to teach the patients. The practice-focused question was whether staff education could increase nurses’ …

Special Education Teachers' Perceptions Regarding Inadequate Transition Planning Services For Students With Severe Intellectual Disabilities, Jennifer Garcia Villanueva
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed in this study was that students with severe intellectual disabilities (SwSID) enrolled in life skills settings are not receiving adequate transition planning services at local rural public schools in a southwestern state. The purpose of this study was to investigate special education teachers’ (SET) perceptions about transition services for SwSID and explore SETs’ suggestions about how to improve delivery of transition planning services. The conceptual framework for this study was Schlossberg’s transition model. For this basic qualitative design, 12 semistructured interviews with SET of SwSID were conducted. Data analysis was conducted using open coding, axial …

Steps In The Right Direction: The Psychological And Physical Health Impacts Of Public Infrastructure And Walkability, Julianne Bailey
Honors Projects
Walkability is a concept that impacts every individual on a daily basis, but yet is not understood well in public discourse. The United States has been built for decades to rely on cars as the primary method of transportation, despite proven success from other models abroad. This project looks into the benefits that walkability and certain elements of public infrastructure have to offer in regard to mental and physical well-being. Concepts such as green space, active commuting, and neighborhood design highlight how walkable environments offer a number of benefits pertaining to mental and physical health, and exemplify why walkability is …

U.S-Venezuelan Relations: Personality And Foreign Policy Decision Making, Isabella D. Alvarez Chacon
U.S-Venezuelan Relations: Personality And Foreign Policy Decision Making, Isabella D. Alvarez Chacon
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, the authoritarian socialist regime leaders in Venezuela, are known for their social programs and their stance against the U.S., but only Maduro cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S., one of the most significant FP decisions of his administration. This research examines the role that the personalities of these leaders may have played in explaining their distinct FP towards the U.S. Personality helps find traits that shift a leader’s behavior that then influence how they make decisions. Previous research has shown that personality is a helpful tool for understanding leaders' strategies, but it has not …

Impact Of Saf Blends On U.S. Airline Profits, Hui Shan Soh, Matthew Yang An Chan, Joyce Nayome Odulio Valerio, Sutton Adam
Impact Of Saf Blends On U.S. Airline Profits, Hui Shan Soh, Matthew Yang An Chan, Joyce Nayome Odulio Valerio, Sutton Adam
Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202
IATA's 2050 net-zero emissions target is expected to pose significant financial challenges for airlines due to the high implementation costs and the expense of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). To remain competitive, this research advocates for the gradual adoption of SAF through a blended approach with Traditional Aviation Fuel (TAF). Incrementally increasing the SAF blend over time allows airlines to recover initial implementation costs while progressively raising the SAF percentage. This research aims to develop a formula to help airlines calculate the ideal SAF-to-TAF blend ratio for maintaining profitability. Key factors considered in the formula include SAF and TAF prices, carbon …
Host Mediated Rhizobiome Engineering To Develop Locally Adapted Soil Mycorrhizal Inocula To Facilitate The Establishment Of Native Plants On Contaminated Soils, Anna Nugent
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The microbial community in the rhizosphere of plants plays an important role in plant establishment and survival, soil stability during stormwater runoff, and potential biofiltration of stormwater. Locally adapted fungal symbionts may further improve these outcomes for native plants at restoration sites. This study assesses the potential of host plant cultured, locally adapted soil mycorrhizal inocula to facilitate the establishment and growth of Mountain Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. vaseyana) on heavy-metal contaminated soils. Soil was obtained from the rhizosphere of native plants at three sites in the West Side Soils Operable Unit of the Butte, Montana Superfund Complex. One …
Examining The Effects Of Language Barriers For Non-Native English Speakers In The Healthcare System In Northwest Ohio, Sarah Witt
Honors Projects
Hundreds of thousands of people in the state of Ohio speak a language other than English, and communication in a predominantly English-speaking state can prove not only cumbersome, but dangerous as well. Patients who have difficulties communicating with their healthcare providers experience higher rates of medical error, adverse medical reactions because of improper drug use, longer hospital stays, and more hospital readmissions than the general population. Additionally, they experience high rates of anxiety and frustration when receiving medical care, which causes resentment and mistrust of the healthcare system. This study investigated language barriers in healthcare systems across Northwest Ohio by …

Senior Voice Recital Program, Emily M. Montelongo
Honors Capstones
To meet the final requirements of my degree in Music Education, I organized, prepared, and performed my senior vocal recital. In addition to this, I completed my capstone by writing an additional version of my program with added program notes, elaborative information, and translations of pieces that are not in English. This program highlights composers Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Amy Beach, Leonard Bernstein, Manuel De Falla, Léo Delibes, and Jacques Offenbach. I completed extensive research on their lives, formulating this knowledge into biographies. I also included more detailed information on all of the pieces sung so audience members could have …

Leadership Awakening: Shifting Towards Eco-Consciousness Through Psychedelics, Ladana Edwards
Journal of Conscious Evolution
Corporate leaders, wielding influence and decision-making power over world resources and capital, are key drivers of systemic change to address current social, economic, and ecological crises. To address the myriad complex and interdependent crises, a transformative shift in consciousness is required in leaders and leadership teams, from ego-consciousness towards eco-consciousness, which can be supported through psychedelic experiences. Shifting towards eco-consciousness can facilitate holistic decision making and an expanded sense of leadership responsibility to the planet and all its inhabitants—ultimately supporting the creation of healthier eco-nomics in our Earth community.
Shifts towards leadership eco-consciousness have the potential to open up space …

Microstructured Microstructure: Effects Of Concentration Variations On Shock Initiation Of Hmx-Based Plastic Explosives, Dana D. Dlott, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri
Microstructured Microstructure: Effects Of Concentration Variations On Shock Initiation Of Hmx-Based Plastic Explosives, Dana D. Dlott, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We studied shock-compressed plastic-bonded explosives (PBX) consisting of HMX (cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine) with PDMS (poly-dimethylsiloxane) binder, where we varied the HMX weight percent (wt%) up to a maximum of 60 wt%. In this lower-concentration regime, HMX particle clustering causes the PBX structure to consist of HMX clusters and PDMS islands. Structural analysis by optical microscopy allowed us to compute a radial correlation function that gives the mean distance from an average HMX particle to the nearest polymer island. Short-duration 20 GPa shocks (4 ns) created hot spots, and time-resolved thermal emission was used to obtain the growth rate of the subsequent deflagration. …

Hyperspectral Imaging For Temperature Measurements Of Hot Spots In Shocked Plastic-Bonded Explosives, Dhanalakshmi Sellan, Siva Kumar Valluri, Dana D. Dlott
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hot spots are formed when energetic microstructures are shocked, and they play a critical role in shock sensitivity. It is important to know both the time-dependent size and temperature of the hot spots, in order to generate a kinetic model to describe reaction growth in plastic-bonded explosives (PBX). Here we use a recently developed technique where PBX is fabricated in the form of a thin wafer, embedded within a transparent polymer binder, and shocked with a laser-launched flyer plate that produces pressures of about 30 GPa range. In this method, every crystal of the cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine (HMX)-based PBX can be observed …
