Assessing Ocean Attitudes, Decision-Making, And Learning Of Oceanography Camp Especially For Girls Participants, Serenity Poston-Hymel

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The ocean provides many important economic, nutritional, and cultural resources and ecosystem services to human populations. However, many anthropogenic activities are threatening ocean ecosystems and these vital resources (Inniss et al., 2016). Ocean literacy is the knowledge, attitude, and behaviors that pertain to the ocean, its systems, and its relationships with humans (Brennan et al., 2019; Schoedinger et al., 2005). A key goal of ocean literacy is encouraging informed decisions and behaviors pertaining to the ocean, leading to responsible management and use of ocean resources (Santoro et al., 2018). Ocean attitudes and environmental moral reasoning are vital in influencing positive …

Design And Synthesis Of Bimetallic Catalyst And Multifunctional Peptide Catalysis For Organic Synthesis And Synthesis Of Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (Protacs) For Sphk1 And Sphk2, Mariur Rodriguez Moreno

Theses and Dissertations

In the first part of this dissertation (chapters 1-4) we discuss the development of bimetallic and monometallic palladium complexes scaffolded on 2-phosphinoimidazole ligands and their application to cross-coupling reactions. Specifically, we discovered a bimetallic Pd(II) dimer that performs a tandem arylation/annulation reaction to produce naphthalene products from aryl iodides and ketones (Chapter 2). We then show that bimetallic Pd(II) and Pd (I) complexes have different activity in different transformations and that the starting oxidation state of our catalysts is important for reactivity (Chapter 3). For example, we demonstrate that our Pd(I) dimer is much more active in Buchwald- Hartwig amination …

Data Privacy Protection For Zero-Permission Sensors In Iot Systems, Xinyi Liu Dec 2024

Data Privacy Protection For Zero-Permission Sensors In Iot Systems, Xinyi Liu

Theses

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized various domains through real-time decision-making and automation, with sensors serving as foundational components. Zero-permission sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, are widely used in most IoT systems, enabling unrestricted data access without permission. Despite being traditionally perceived as low-sensitivity, recent studies have shown that these sensors can be exploited to infer sensitive personal information, raising serious privacy concerns. Local Differential Privacy (LDP) is a rigorous technique for numerical data privacy protection even when the data collector, such as an IoT service provider, is untrusted. LDP ensures privacy by adding noise to sensor readings …

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) controls the movement of molecules into and out of the central nervous system (CNS). Since a functional BBB forms by mouse embryonic day E15.5, we reasoned that gene cohorts expressed in CNS endothelial cells (EC) at E13.5 contribute to BBB formation. In contrast, adult gene signatures reflect BBB maintenance mechanisms. Supporting this hypothesis, transcriptomic analysis revealed distinct cohorts of EC genes involved in BBB formation and maintenance. Here, we demonstrate that epigenetic regulator's histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) and polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) control EC gene expression for BBB development and prevent Wnt/β-catenin (Wnt) target genes …

Chronic Disease Management In A Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic: An Interpretive Description Study, Natalie Floriancic, Anna Garnett, Lorie Donelle Phd, Rn, Fcan

Publications

Introduction

Nurse practitioner-led clinics (NPLC) represent a model of care that has the potential to enhance primary healthcare delivery to community-dwelling adults who are living with chronic disease by providing greater access and continuity of care and reducing the burden on acute care settings. However, there is limited understanding of nurse practitioners’ experiences and perspectives on supporting adults in chronic disease management within an NPLC model of care. Increased understanding would contribute to our ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the NPLC model of care for chronic disease management.

Objective

This study explored current chronic disease management practices implemented by …

Catering To The Majority: Fashion’S Trial-And-Error Process To Make Style Accessible For All Sizes, Tiffany A. Del Valle

Capstones

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, two out of every three U.S. women are considered plus-size, or a size 14 and above. As the plus-size fashion market continues to grow and is expected to be worth $500 billion by 2033, finding extended sizes continues to be a barrier. While the fight for size-inclusive fashion has shown some progress in recent years, some brands have decided to scale back their plus-size offerings, while others have continued to limit their size ranges due to a multitude of reasons including production costs with a delayed return on investment, marketing and limited commitment to serving the …

Using Supervised Learning To Predict The Band Rank Of Braids, Juliana Moraes Dec 2024

Using Supervised Learning To Predict The Band Rank Of Braids, Juliana Moraes

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Supervised learning has emerged as a powerful tool for solving complex classification problems across various domains, including mathematical structures. In the realm of braid theory, an intriguing challenge involves determining the number of bands in a mathematical braid, which is crucial for understanding braid complexity and its applications. This thesis introduces an approach leveraging supervised learning to tackle this problem. Using different representations of a braid (namely braid words and Lawrence-Krammer representations), we train a supervised learning model to predict the number of bands in a given braid. The approach involves constructing a labeled dataset of braids with known band …

Normative Truth Under Metamodernism, Sam Taylor Dec 2024

Normative Truth Under Metamodernism, Sam Taylor

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis elaborates on a metamodern framework for grounding normative truth. Metamodernism is an evolving approach in the humanities and social sciences that seeks to reconcile stable truth with the genealogical skepticism of postmodernism. I follow Jason Ānada Josephson Storm in arguing that virtue ethics presents fertile ground for metamodernism with respect to normative truth.

I extend Storm’s preliminary approach to this subject by comparing it with the work of two other scholars: Pierre Manent — an Aristotelian virtue ethicist who has become very popular among Christian political theorists — and Amy Allen — a postmodern-inspired, decolonial theorist. Manent has …

Entropy-Regularized Optimal Transport In Information Design, Jorge Justiniano, Andreas Kleiner, Benny Moldovanu, Martin Rumpf, Philipp Strack

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper, we explore a scenario where a sender provides an information policy and a receiver, upon observing a realization of this policy, decides whether to take a particular action, such as making a purchase. The sender’s objective is to maximize her utility derived from the receiver’s action, and she achieves this by careful selection of the information policy. Building on the work of Kleiner et al., our focus lies specifically on information policies that are associated with power diagram partitions of the underlying domain. To address this problem, we employ entropy-regularized optimal transport, which enables us to develop …
