Chimica et Natura Acta
Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, an aggressive cancer in the head and neck region is mostly diagnosed at an advanced stage and thus has a poor prognosis. Cytokeratin Fragment 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) is one of the oncomarkers discovered in saliva. For developing a diagnostic kit, CYFRA 21-1 antibodies and immunogens are needed. Natural CYFRA 21-1 immunogen is difficult to obtain, so it must be made in-silico using bioinformatics. We aim to predict CYFRA 21-1 immunogenic epitope to produce antibodies polyclonal against CYFRA 21-1, which can be used to develop NPC diagnostics. The immunogenic epitopes were predicted and chosen based on antigenicity, surface accessibility, …
Theory And Algorithms To Learn, Propagate, And Exploit Uncertainty For Stochastic Optimal Control Of Dynamical Systems, Vignesh Sivaramakrishnan
Theory And Algorithms To Learn, Propagate, And Exploit Uncertainty For Stochastic Optimal Control Of Dynamical Systems, Vignesh Sivaramakrishnan
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Non-Gaussian uncertainty frequently arises in learning and control problems involving stochastic dynamical systems, particularly in autonomous vehicles, UAVs, satellites, and robotics. In this dissertation, we propose a new framework that leverages characteristic functions that provides a frequency-domain representation of random variables. The dissertation is structured into three key areas. First, we address model-based stochastic optimal control for linear systems with non-Gaussian noise, demonstrating that characteristic functions can be used to enforce chance constraints and control systems toward desired distributions. Second, we explore data-driven stochastic control, utilizing empirical characteristic functions to handle systems with unknown disturbances. In addition, we derive several …

Conceptualization, Measurement, And Contributors To Participation Among People Living With Parkinson’S Disease, Moon Young Kim
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Participation is a key outcome of rehabilitation and key to successful aging. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) often experience significant challenges in maintaining participation in meaningful activities and roles. This dissertation examines the influence of living with PD on participation by integrating findings from three studies: a systematic review, a cross-sectional study, and a longitudinal study.
The systematic review synthesized the existing quantitative research on participation in people with PD, revealing inconsistencies in the conceptualization of participation. While the evaluation tools aimed at assessing participation in PD showed acceptable coverage of domains of participation, the assessment of the aspects of …

Working Paper No. 85, Alexis De Tocqueville And The American Wealth Gap, Chloe Kneedler
Working Paper No. 85, Alexis De Tocqueville And The American Wealth Gap, Chloe Kneedler
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that French lawyer and scholar, Alexis de Tocqueville, observed as early as the 1830s, what would later emerge as the American wealth gap. After a nine-month journey that included his traveling through different parts of the nascent United States, Tocqueville wrote a two-volume book titled: Democracy in America [1835]. Over the length of his two volumes, Tocqueville reflects upon his experiences and observations drawn from the American nation in its fifth decade. Throughout this book, Tocqueville described the democratic structure of this country as emblematic of what could be expected from this “New World,” and …

Working Paper No. 86, The Evolution Of Japan's Economy, Kasandra Reyes Fernandez
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that already from its feudal era characterized by fiefdoms and kingdoms to its development as a modern nation- state, Japan’s economic history reveals discernible variants of capitalism. Highlighting these variants assist us in defining distinct eras that also offer the observer a sense of the evolution of Japan’s economy. In advancing this thesis, the first part considers differences between variants of capitalism found in the Tokugawa Era and, after 1868, what is designated as the Meiji Era. The focus shall be on the economic foundations of the Tokugawa shogunate versus the nascent industrialization during the …

Working Paper No. 92, Karl Polanyi, Human Labor, And The Working Class, Niccolo Cellini
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that Karl Polanyi advanced ideas regarding human labor that we could judge as both seminal and enduring. Through examining his famous book, The Great Transformation, we could draw out three interconnected theses central to his critique of market-oriented economies. Firstly, we could emphasize that Polanyi judges labor as a fictitious commodity, emphasizing distinct aspects associable with labor’s emergence during the industrialization of England. In developing his ideas Polanyi draws upon the historical examples of the Speenhamland System and Frederick Engels' accounts of industrial labor that highlighted the destabilizing effects of embedding labor within …

Aberrant intestinal inflammation plays a critical role in the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC), yet the mechanisms controlling tumor development by the myeloid immune compartment are not fully understood. Although altered microRNA expression is observed in CAC, it is also unclear how myeloid-specific microRNAs impact the inflammatory process that underpins the continuum from ulcerative colitis to tumorigenesis. In this study, we report that miR-223 acts to limit myeloid-driven inflammation in the azoxymethane (AOM)-dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) model of CAC in mice. In this model, miR-223-/y mice present with significantly larger tumors with an enhanced proliferative signature. Immunoprofiling showed that …

Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face increasing challenges from pests and climate change, among other issues. In response to these challenges, international agricultural research for development (R4D) investment is often focused on developing and scaling up techniques and technologies that bolster resilience. However, such approaches are often technocentric and follow linear assumptions of innovation diffusion and adoption, which overlook the complex realities that influence smallholder farmers’ dynamic decisions and engagement with novel techniques. This study used qualitative ethnographic methods to explore the experiences, knowledge construction, motivations, and decision-making of farmers in Western Kenya regarding the extensively researched push-pull technology …

Innovative technology-based solutions in mental healthcare promise significant improvements in care quality and clinical outcomes. However, their successful implementation is profoundly influenced by the levels of trust patients hold toward their treatment providers, organizations, and the technology itself. This paper delves into the complexities of building and assessing patient trust within the intensive mental health care context, focusing on inpatient settings. We explore the multifaceted nature of trust, including interpersonal, institutional, and technological trust. We highlight the crucial role of therapeutic trust, which comprises both interpersonal trust between patients and providers, and institutional trust in treatment organizations. The manuscript identifies …

In functional magnetic resonance imaging, the hemodynamic response function (HRF) is a stereotypical response to local changes in cerebral hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism due to briefly (< 4 s) evoked neural activity. Accordingly, the HRF is often used as an impulse response with the assumption of linearity in data analysis. In cognitive aging studies, it has been very common to interpret differences in brain activation as age-related changes in neural activity. Contrary to this assumption, however, evidence has accrued that normal aging may also significantly affect the vasculature, thereby affecting cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism, confounding interpretation of fMRI cognitive aging studies. In this study, use was made of a multisensory task to evoke the HRF in ~87% of cerebral cortex in cognitively intact adults with ages ranging from 22 to 75 years. This widespread activation enabled us to investigate age trends in the spatial distributions of HRF characteristics within the majority of cortical gray matter, which we termed as global age trends. The task evoked both positive and negative HRFs, which were characterized using model-free parameters in native-space coordinates. We found significant global age trends in the distributions of HRF parameters in terms of both amplitudes (e.g., peak amplitude and contrast-to-noise ratio) and temporal dynamics (e.g., full-width-at-half-maximum). Our findings offer insight into how age-dependent changes affect neurovascular coupling and show promise for use of HRF parameters as non-invasive indicators for age-related pathology.

Advances in imaging, pharmacological, and procedural technologies have rapidly expanded the care of pulmonary embolism. Earlier, more accurate identification and quantification has enhanced risk stratification across the spectrum of the disease process, with a number of clinical tools available to prognosticate outcomes and guide treatment. Direct oral anticoagulants have enabled a consistent and more convenient long-term therapeutic option, with a greater shift toward outpatient treatment for a select group of low-risk patients. The array of catheter-directed therapies now available has contributed to a more versatile and nuanced armamentarium of treatment options, including ultrasound-facilitated thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. Internet of Hybrid Vehicle Networks (IoHV) is a network generated by merging the Internet with a Hybrid Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (H-VANET). In IoHV, various types of electric and fuel vehicles create tasks. However, executing several tasks by electric vehicles affects their lifetime because they suffer from energy limitation issues which is one of the IoHV challenges. On the other hand, fuel vehicles and fog nodes have unlimited energy and can be used to execute most tasks of electric vehicles quickly. In this paper, we produce a new Energy Resource management Technique for IoHV called ERTH that aims to offload the …

Tungsten (W) is being developed as a plasma-facing material for fusion reactors, where it is subjected to MeV neutron irradiation, low-energy helium isotope particles, and high temperatures. These conditions lead to the formation of point defects, dislocation loops, voids, and transmutation into rhenium (Re) and osmium (Os), which form precipitates that significantly impact dislocation motion and increase hardness. This study uses molecular dynamics modeling to examine the interaction between an edge dislocation and Re-rich particles of various stoichiometries, specifically coherent bcc-phase particles and noncoherent σ-phase precipitates. Results show that shear stress increases by approximately 20-40% with larger particle size (3-5 …

In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to numerical solving for nuclear reactivity using the inverse equation of point kinetics as a model. Our method leverages the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature, incorporating multiple time steps and nodes derived from Legendre polynomials of varying orders. To enhance the accuracy of the differential component of the inverse equation, we employed a differential scheme based on the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature nodes. To address fluctuations in neutron population density, we implemented a second-order low-pass Butterworth filter with a minimal window length of M = 3 samples. Through extensive numerical simulations, we assessed the precision of our …

Transcriptome analysis revealed 1711 differentially expressed genes, Pathwayanalysis indicates that protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum was the most affected pathway. In addition, thetranscriptome showed that adenylosuccinate lyase is essential for the synthesis of cordycepin. The modulation of fourgenes (Cns1-4) points to a regulatory mechanism that could increase cordycepin biosynthesis, offering a strategy to overcome low productivity for commercial applications.

Cinnamic acid (CA) possesses important cardiovascular effects such as cardioprotective, antiatherogenic, anti-hyperlipidemic and antioxidant, which predicts its potential role in the treatment of hypertension. The study wasexecuted to investigate the antihypertensive potential of CA in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats followed by evaluation indiverse vascular preparations. Invasive blood pressure monitoring technique was used in normotensive and hyper-tensive rats, under anesthesia. Isolated aortic rings from rat and rabbit, Langendorrf's perfused isolated rabbit heart and guinea-pig right atria were used to probe the underlying mechanisms. The responses were recorded with pressure andforce transducers connected to PowerLab Data Acquisition System. Intravenous administration of CA …
