Enabling Per-File Data Recovery From Ransomware Attacks Via File System Forensics And Flash Translation Layer Data Extraction, Josh Dafoe, Niusen Chen, Bo Chen, Zhenlin Wang
Michigan Tech Publications
Ransomware attacks are increasingly prevalent in recent years. Crypto-ransomware corrupts files on an infected device and demands a ransom to recover them. In computing devices using flash memory storage (e.g., SSD, MicroSD, etc.), existing designs recover the compromised data by extracting the entire raw flash memory image, restoring the entire external storage to a good prior state. This is feasible through taking advantage of the out-of-place updates feature implemented in the flash translation layer (FTL). However, due to the lack of “file” semantics in the FTL, such a solution does not allow a fine-grained data recovery in terms of files. …

Undeserving And Underserved: Violence Victims And Society, Venita Monet C. D'Angelo
Theses
This capstone includes three papers that explore how structural disadvantage, place-based dynamics, and institutional responses shape the experiences of individuals and communities. The first paper focuses on the relationship between concentrated disadvantage, micro-places, and individual outcomes. It shows how crime is not randomly distributed but clusters in specific locations within disadvantaged neighborhoods. Drawing on theories of social disorganization and cumulative disadvantage, the paper explains how neighborhood and micro-place conditions intersect to shape long-term risks and outcomes for residents. The second paper analyzes a community-based intervention designed to reduce recidivism and revictimization. The evaluation considers the program’s design, goals, and limitations, …

Fine-Scale Spatial Patterns Of Gelatinous Zooplankton In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah E. Kepner
Fine-Scale Spatial Patterns Of Gelatinous Zooplankton In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah E. Kepner
Oceanography
The Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGA) is characterized by high variability across spatial and temporal scales. In the NGA, zooplankton are a crucial link between primary production and higher trophic levels. Understanding the mechanisms that structure zooplankton assemblages is important to our overall understanding of ecosystem functioning. Nonetheless, thorough description of zooplankton abundance and distribution patterns is challenging due to the inherent variability and complexity of the marine environment. The study of gelatinous zooplankton is further complicated by the limitations of traditional plankton net sampling methods that are inefficient for the collection of high-resolution spatiotemporal data and often inflict damage …
Creating A Digital House Of Knowledge: Ensuring The Continuation And Integrity Of Indigenous Knowledge Transfers In The Digital Era, Jacquelyn C. Cordova
Creating A Digital House Of Knowledge: Ensuring The Continuation And Integrity Of Indigenous Knowledge Transfers In The Digital Era, Jacquelyn C. Cordova
Indigenous Studies
Traditional Indigenous knowledge transfer systems have contributed to the sustainability of highly advanced Indigenous societies since time immemorial. These systems have been purposefully targeted since European arrival to the Americas in the late 1400s and early 1500s, consequently creating barriers for Indigenous Peoples as they strive to conduct their traditional knowledge transfer processes within their communities. These barriers, paired with the continual rise and use of global technologies, have created circumstances where many Native Elders and Knowledge Keepers experience difficulty reaching their youth and community members to ensure the successful transfer of Indigenous data and knowledge to current and future …

Extraction Of Rare Earth Elements From Coal Ash Using Supercritical Co₂, Uthej Veerla
Engineering
The increasing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) as critical components in modern technologies has led to growing interest in their efficient recovery from alternative sources. Coal ash, a waste product generated from coal combustion, has been identified as a potential reservoir of valuable REEs with reported REE concentrations varying between 270 and 1480 ppm. In this research paper, we investigate the recovery of REEs from three coal ashes: anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous using environmentally benign supercritical fluid (SCF) carbon dioxide (CO2). Additionally, the effect of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and nitric acid (HNO3) as complexing agents is explored to enhance the …
Inverse Problems For Shallow Water Equations And Applications To Tsunami Modelling, Oleksandr Bobrovnikov
Inverse Problems For Shallow Water Equations And Applications To Tsunami Modelling, Oleksandr Bobrovnikov
Mathematics and Statistics
The problem of tsunami run-up has been extensively studied in the framework of the shallow water equations. Typically one assumes that the initial water displacement and the initial velocity are known, and then the run-up is computed using the Carrier-Greenspan transformation. The inverse problem consists of recovering the initial displacement and/or velocity from the shoreline oscillations. It has been previously demonstrated that the initial displacement can be recovered from shoreline oscillations under the assumption of zero initial velocity for the sloping plane beach. We show that this result can be generalised to arbitrary power-shaped bathymetries. Moreover, we show that for …
Early Considerations And Estimates For The Performance Of An Alaska-Based Earthquake Early Warning System, Alexander Fozkos
Early Considerations And Estimates For The Performance Of An Alaska-Based Earthquake Early Warning System, Alexander Fozkos
Geosciences
The complexity of Alaska presents several challenges for earthquake early warning systems. These include the presence of offshore earthquakes, transform boundaries and crustal faults extending hundreds of kilometers, deep earthquakes, and a complicated coastline. This variety, combined with population centers spread far apart, makes it challenging to anticipate an earthquake early warning system's performance and to design a network accordingly. As Alaska begins to plan for earthquake early warning, our objective is to envision how and how well it might function in Alaska. We present here sets of scenarios with warning time and ground motion estimates for a variety of …

A Range Extension For Carex Sartwellii In Interior Alaska, Mark A. Winterstein
Biological Sciences
Mean annual temperatures and growing season length have been increasing in northern latitudes. This has impacted permafrost thaw and the water balance of northern regions, resulting in a pattern of drying lakes in the Yukon Flats, Alaska. As lakes dry, they expose lake sediments to colonization by terrestrial vegetation. Recent interest in the terrestrial response to climate change and its effects on ecosystem services led to the formation of the Yukon River Basin project. As a part of this project, we studied plant succession and diversity in the drying lake basins. In the course of our field work we encountered …
