Sources And Termination Patterns Of Cholinergic Input To The Ventral Nucleus Of The Lateral Lemniscus, Emily Echols Jan 2024

Sources And Termination Patterns Of Cholinergic Input To The Ventral Nucleus Of The Lateral Lemniscus, Emily Echols

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Neurons transmit signals through an electrochemical reaction: synapses on dendrites and the cell body receive neurotransmitters, and their effect on the cell determines the signal the cell will transmit. From dendrites to axon and then to another cell at a synaptic cleft, signals can propagate, enhance each other, or inhibit other transmissions until the message is received by the target area. Understanding the science behind neural signaling and structural function begins at the level of the synapse. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) plays a substantial role in modulating neural activity in the auditory system, but for many brainstem nuclei the source …

Psychotropic Polypharmacy On Heart Rate Of Daphnia Magna, Gwendolynne Miller, Brian Bagatto Jan 2024

Psychotropic Polypharmacy On Heart Rate Of Daphnia Magna, Gwendolynne Miller, Brian Bagatto

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The prevalence of patients being prescribed multiple medications concurrently is significantly rising, and so is the importance of investigating any interactions between medications. One common example—sertraline and clomipramine have been used together to treat obsessive compulsive disorder. Clomipramine, however, is known to cause tachyarrhythmias in some patients. The present study set out to investigate the role of this drug combination on the heart rate of a simple animal model, Daphnia magna, or the water flea. The water flea was exposed to saline, sertraline, clomipramine, or sertraline plus clomipramine, and heart rate was measured subsequently. It was found that the …

To Mean Or Not To Mean: An Investigation Of Regression To The Mean, Hunter Ellis Jan 2024

To Mean Or Not To Mean: An Investigation Of Regression To The Mean, Hunter Ellis

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Regression to the mean is a statistical phenomenon that can hide important characteristics of what is truly happening in a research study. Caused by statistical randomness, regression to the mean occurs when extreme values, high or low, are followed by less extreme values. To correctly deal with it, one must understand what it is and how to distinguish its effect on conclusions made from the data. This paper provides examples of regression to the mean in both a medical and academic performance study and explains simple identifiers one can observe. Those are then followed up by the introduction of the …

Impact Of Cannabidol (Cbd) On Daphnia Magna Heart Rate, Joanna Ross Jan 2024

Impact Of Cannabidol (Cbd) On Daphnia Magna Heart Rate, Joanna Ross

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In 2023, Ohio legalized recreational cannabis use for adults over 21; however, research on the physiological effectsof cannabis-derived compounds, particularly cannabidiol (CBD), remains limited due to i ts narcotics classification. While CBD is known to antagonize Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1), a receptor found in the cardiac tissue of a numberof organisms, the effects on cardiac activity are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the impact ofCBD on heart rate in Daphnia magna. The hypothesis posited that CBD would increase heart rate in Daphnia byantagonizing CB1 receptors or equivalent G-protein-coupled receptors. The subjects were exposed to threetreatments: control (dechlorinated water), …

Zips Baja Zb25 Frame, Elijah Shelhart Jan 2024

Zips Baja Zb25 Frame, Elijah Shelhart

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This report outlines the design and validation of a new frame for the University of Akron Zips Baja team’s 2025 competition vehicle. This project represents the first comprehensive redesign of the frame in over a decade, addressing critical issues such as weight and manufacturability identified in previous designs. Utilizing SolidWorks for 3D modeling and Ansys for static simulations, the frame was iteratively improved to ensure structural integrity and compliance with SAE competition rules. The final design achieved a weight reduction of approximately 10 pounds compared to the previous frame while maintaining required safety factors in frontal, rear, rollover, and torsional …

The Effects Of Social Support On Recovery Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Patients, Preshecca Ragavan Jan 2024

The Effects Of Social Support On Recovery Outcomes Of Hip Fracture Patients, Preshecca Ragavan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This literature review, completed under the guidance of Ms. Anuja Sarode-Paciorek from Summa Health - Akron, will investigate the effects of social support on the recovery outcomes of hip fracture patients. As part of this literature review, I will collect and analyze several scientific journal articles previously published on this topic to gain an overview of what prior knowledge clinical researchers have already gathered about this topic. As part of the analyses, each article will be thoroughly read and briefly summarized. Then, these summaries will be used to compile a list of a few strengths and a list of a …

Importance Of Wrap-Around Services In Primary Schools, Alyson Giunto, Liberty Posey, Elli Spicer Jan 2024

Importance Of Wrap-Around Services In Primary Schools, Alyson Giunto, Liberty Posey, Elli Spicer

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Our project will include an explanation of wrap-around services available for primary students and their families. We will start by explaining what a wrap-around service is and why they are important. We will do this through a secondary literature review including grouping services into the tiers in Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. In three sections, we will focus on aspects of Maslow’s hierarchy and how the wrap-around services relate to those needs. The tiers include physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Physiological needs include food, water, and shelter. Safety makes sure that individuals can focus on their …

Interconnectivity Of Melt During Partial Melting And Deformation Of A Peridotite, Jordan Collins Jan 2024

Interconnectivity Of Melt During Partial Melting And Deformation Of A Peridotite, Jordan Collins

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The mechanisms that allow basaltic magma to be transported to the surface are well understood, but not much is known about how the transport channels form as the basalt melt forms at the source. I performed experiments to determine these mechanisms during general shear deformation of a natural olivine aggregate (dunite) from Anita Bay, New Zealand as it partially melts using a high pressure/temperature rock deformation apparatus. Samples were analyzed using the scanning electron microscope and I observed that melt pockets started to form at the grain scale (1-2 vol% melt) prior to becoming interconnected at the sample scale (3 …

Eurhythmic Use For Syncopation In An Instrumental Class, Kristen Flinner Jan 2024

Eurhythmic Use For Syncopation In An Instrumental Class, Kristen Flinner

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate how Dalcroze Eurhythmic approaches affect syncopated rhythm integrity in an instrumental class. One graduate and five undergraduate music education majors enrolled in a string methods course took part in this study. A pre-assessment was completed using an etude for cello comprised of syncopated rhythms. Following a sequence of four Dalcroze Eurhythmics-inspired lessons, post-assessment results showed an improvement in the fluidity and rhythmic accuracy of the six participants on the performance of the cello etude.

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Natural Wood Treatments Against Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes Flavipes) Damage: A Comparative Study, Emma Goettel Jan 2024

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Natural Wood Treatments Against Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes Flavipes) Damage: A Comparative Study, Emma Goettel

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This research is to discover alternative natural chemical cues to the use of borates to deter Eastern Subterranean Termites (R. flavipes) that remain in place in areas of high moisture content. Common sources of food for Eastern Subterranean Termites include materials that are high in cellulose content. As one of these sources, wood, is an abundantly used material in society such as in home construction, research into potential methods to make this material less susceptible to termite predation is an area of public interest. The current method of deterrence is pressure treatment of wood with Borates as they disrupt the …

Optimization Of Buffers Used In Phycobiliprotein Extraction From The Cyanobacterium Acaryochloris Marina, Rinah Fleisher Jan 2024

Optimization Of Buffers Used In Phycobiliprotein Extraction From The Cyanobacterium Acaryochloris Marina, Rinah Fleisher

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Optimization of buffers used in phycocyanin extraction from A. marina was explored including acetate, phosphate, and citrate buffers as well as deionized water as a negative control. Samples were extracted in triplicates for each trial with two extraction trials completed overall for citrate buffer (n=6), phosphate buffer (n=6), acetate buffer (n=6), and deionized water (n=6). Results reflect no statistical difference in phycocyanin content (μg/mL) between each buffer or deionized water control. Though no statistically significant differences between treatment groups were found, phosphate buffer yielded the greatest phycocyanin content and the deionized water negative control yielded the lowest phycocyanin content overall. …
