BACKGROUND: Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is depleted in critically ill or surgical patients. In pediatric and adult patients, sepsis results in an arginine-deficient state, and the depletion of plasma arginine is associated with greater mortality. However, direct supplementation of arginine can result in the excessive production of nitric oxide (NO), which can contribute to the hypotension and macrovascular hypo-reactivity observed in septic shock. Pegylated arginine deiminase (ADI-PEG20, pegargiminase) reduces plasma arginine and generates citrulline that can be transported intracellularly to generate local arginine and NO, without resulting in hypotension, while maintaining microvascular patency. The objective of …

Volcanism increases when glaciers melt because isostatic rebound during deglaciation decreases the pressure on the mantle, which enhances decompression melting. Anthropogenic climate change is now causing ice sheets and valley glaciers to melt around the world and this deglaciation could stimulate volcanic activity and associated hazards in Iceland, Antarctica, Alaska, and Patagonia. However, current model predictions for volcanic activity associated with anthropogenic deglaciation in Iceland are poorly constrained, in part due to uncertainties in past volcanic output over time compared to ice sheet arrangements. Further work specifically characterizing glaciovolcanic and ice-marginal volcanoes in Iceland is needed to reconstruct volcanic output …

The short and biased observational record of tropical cyclones (TCs) limits scientific understanding of how these destructive storms respond to climate forcing. Paleohurricane records use natural archives (tree rings, coarse-grained sediment) to reconstruct TC properties (frequency and intensity of rainfall, wind) over the past few hundreds to thousands of years. However, different sensitivities and sampling biases in the various paleohurricane proxies restrict our ability to compile these records into regional or basin-scale TC estimates. Here we test how well pseudo tree-ring records of paleohurricanes capture TC rainfall and occurrence. Using a large set of statistically downscaled storms forced with the …

Observations and model studies suggest that front dynamics can enhance phytoplankton productivity. This study tested whether frontal systems also increase the abundance of nitrifying microbes and nitrogen recycling during repeat sampling transects across the Mid‐Atlantic Bight shelfbreak in July 2019. We measured ammonium concentrations, nitrate dual isotopes (δ15N, δ18O), and ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA) genes of ammonia‐oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB). In subsurface shelf waters, ammonium concentrations exceeded 2 μmol L−1, due to a temporary imbalance in regeneration from sinking particles and subsequent nitrification. The inverse correlation between nitrate δ15 …

Fiddler crabs, as coastal ecosystem engineers, play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and accelerating the flow of material and energy. Here we show how widespread crab burrows modify the carbon sequestration capacity of different habitats across a large climatic gradient. The process of crab burrowing results in the reallocation of sediment organic carbon and humus. Crab burrows can increase more greenhouse gases emissions compared to the sediment matrix (CO2: by 17-30%; CH4: by 49-141%). Straightforward calculations indicate that these increased emissions could offset 35-134% of sediment carbon burial in these two ecosystems. This research highlights the complex interactions between …

Functional coronary angiography (FCA) is a novel modality for assessing the physiology of coronary lesions, going beyond anatomical visualization by traditional coronary angiography. FCA incorporates indices like fractional flow reserve (FFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (IFR), which utilize pressure measurements across coronary stenoses to evaluate hemodynamic impacts and to guide revascularization strategies. In this review, we present traditional and evolving modalities and uses of FCA. We will also evaluate the existing evidence and discuss the applicability of FCA in various clinical scenarios. Finally, we provide insight into emerging evidence, current challenges, and future directions in FCA.

Operationalising Progressive Ideas About Property: Resilient Property, Scale, And Systemic Compromise, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O'Mahony Jan 2024

Operationalising Progressive Ideas About Property: Resilient Property, Scale, And Systemic Compromise, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O'Mahony

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

Property theory is at a crossroads. In recent decades, scholars seeking to advance progressive ideas about property have embraced ‘Progressive Property’ theories that seek to advance the goals of social justice and the common good, offering a vital counter-weight to utilitarian and neo-conservative accounts of property. Progressive Property theories seek to correct an imbalance in American property discourse which—across the temporal scale—has sustained a range of narratives and normative commitments, but which has veered towards extreme acquisitive individualism and the rhetoric of property absolutism since the 1970s. The idea that individual property rights are not absolute but defined by the …

The Effects Of An Acute Session Of Blood Flow Restriction Exercise On Autonomic Modulation, Andrew Garner

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

PURPOSE: How an acute training session of blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise affects autonomic modulation during a unilateral knee extension exercise. METHODS: Fourteen physically active males completed three different sessions while performing a unilateral knee extension exercise. The dependent variables measured: Heart rate variability (HRV), muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to analyze HRV and SmO2 data. A paired t-test was used to analyze RPE data. RESULTS: Significant time-effect differences were found in lnRMSSD, lnHF, and lnLF at baseline to 15 minutes post-exercise and 15 to 30 minutes post-exercise (P < 0.05). Time and group-effect differences were significant in SmO2%, oxygenated, and deoxygenated hemoglobin in the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle in BFR compared to control (P < 0.05). RPE increased when BFR was applied (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Exercise protocol may need to be altered to show autonomic modulation changes.

Associations Of Antioxidant Consumption From Food And Supplement Sources On Cognitive Function In Older Adults, Kelly Knoll Jan 2024

Associations Of Antioxidant Consumption From Food And Supplement Sources On Cognitive Function In Older Adults, Kelly Knoll

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Oxidative stress, the imbalance of prooxidants and antioxidants, has been recognized as a possible risk factor for cognitive impairment. We postulate that increased dietary antioxidant consumption could help preserve cognitive function during aging. Dietary intake and cognitive function of 50 adults aged ≥65-years (66% women; aged 71.5±5.1 years) was assessed using Cronometer, an electronic nutrition analysis application, and the Saint Louis University Mental Status examination. The fisher’s exact test (p < 0.01) identified a significantly lower percentage of cognitive dysfunction (31.6%; 6 of 19 participants) among participants that met the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) for the antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and manganese, and a higher percentage of cognitive dysfunction among those that did not meet the antioxidant RDAs (74.2%; 23 of 31 participants). However, mean cognitive scores differed insignificantly between those meeting RDAs (26.2 ±4.2 points) and those that did not (24.9 ±2.9 points; p = 0.07).

The Missile People: A Cold War Public Memory, Shane Engeland

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

Disrupting the horizon with a startling physical presence on the flat North Dakota prairie, the remains of the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex are the physical remnants of a decisive stage of the Cold War. The complex was part radar array, part computing marvel, and part nuclear launch control platform that represented a significant federal investment in rural North Dakota. Together, these pieces created the pinnacle of the Pentagon’s efforts to create an effective antiballistic missile system. The local memories attached to the complex contrast with general perceptions of the Cold War. Memories of friendship and community are common when …

Unfit: Eugenics On The Northern Great Plains, Levi Magnuson Jan 2024

Unfit: Eugenics On The Northern Great Plains, Levi Magnuson

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

The early twenty-first century saw the emergence of the eugenics movement in the United States, which culminated in the sterilization of people with mental or physical disabilities. State institutions across the country were weaponized against these citizens due to the perception that they were “unfit” to be parents. Recent scholarship on the topic has sought to uncover this history. This study seeks to uncover this past in both North and South Dakota as well as offer an alternative avenue for examining the topic with Canton Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians. Both states provide instances that confirm the current scholarship on …

Leveraging Genomics And Transcriptomics For Gene Discovery In Dry Pea, Josephine Johnson Jan 2024

Leveraging Genomics And Transcriptomics For Gene Discovery In Dry Pea, Josephine Johnson

Genomics and Bioinformatics

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the utilization of DNA marker-based mapping studies to genetically map and further improve complex quantitative traits. A major caveat of this approach is that genetic mapping of the underlying genes conferring target phenotypes is challenging often due to the extent of long-range linkage disequilibrium (LD) in the genome, particularly in self-pollinated crops. Recent technologies allow us to examine expression-phenotype associations using transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) which is independently affected by LD, unlike in the case of genetic markers. This is of greatest utility in species where linkage disequilibrium …

Obesity is associated with chronic inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS), and neuroinflammation has been shown to have detrimental effects on mood and cognition. The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), the biologically relevant receptor of the orexigenic hormone ghrelin, is primarily expressed in the brain. Our previous study showed that neuronal GHSR deletion prevents high-fat diet-induced obesity (DIO). Here, we investigated the effect of neuronal GHSR deletion on emotional and cognitive functions in DIO. The neuron-specific GHSR-deficient mice exhibited reduced depression and improved spatial memory compared to littermate controls under DIO. We further examined the cortex and hippocampus, the …
