Genome-Wide Meta-Analysis Of Short-Tandem Repeats For Parkinson's Disease Risk Using Genotype Imputation, Olena Ohlei, Susan Searles Nielsen, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Idiopathic Parkinson's disease is determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Recently, the first genome-wide association study on short-tandem repeats in Parkinson's disease reported on eight suggestive short-tandem repeat-based risk loci (

Although neurofilament light chain is a well-known marker of neuronal damage, its characterization at the proteoform level is underdeveloped. Here, we describe a new method to profile and quantify neurofilament light chain in plasma at the peptide level, using three in-house monoclonal antibodies targeting distinct protein domains and nano-liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. This study profiled and compared plasma neurofilament light chain to CSF in 102 older individuals (73.9 ± 6.3 years old), 37 of which had a clinical dementia rating greater than 0. We observed elevated neurofilament light chain in preclinical Alzheimer's disease plasma for two …

The piriform cortex is recognized as highly epileptogenic in rodents, yet its electrophysiological role in human epilepsy remains understudied. Recent surgical outcomes have suggested potential benefits in resecting the piriform cortex for cases of medial temporal lobe epilepsy. However, little is known about its electrophysiological activity in human epilepsy. This case-series study aimed to explore the electrophysiological role of the piriform cortex within the epileptogenic network among patients with suspected temporal lobe epilepsy. Participants were recruited from Emory University Hospital or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, with non-lesional frontotemporal or temporal lobe hypotheses, undergoing stereoelectroencephalographic studies. Specifically, focus was placed on …

Neurofilament light chain is an established marker of neuroaxonal injury that is elevated in CSF and blood across various neurological diseases. It is increasingly used in clinical practice to aid diagnosis and monitor progression and as an outcome measure to assess safety and efficacy of disease-modifying therapies across the clinical translational neuroscience field. Quantitative methods for neurofilament light chain in human biofluids have relied on immunoassays, which have limited capacity to describe the structure of the protein in CSF and how this might vary in different neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we characterized and quantified neurofilament light chain species in …

Computational whole-brain models describe the resting activity of each brain region based on a local model, inter-regional functional interactions, and a structural connectome that specifies the strength of inter-regional connections. Strokes damage the healthy structural connectome that forms the backbone of these models and produce large alterations in inter-regional functional interactions. These interactions are typically measured by correlating the time series of the activity between two brain regions in a process, called resting functional connectivity. We show that adding information about the structural disconnections produced by a patient's lesion to a whole-brain model previously trained on structural and functional data …

MOTIVATION: Multi-omics data, i.e. genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, characterize cellular complex signaling systems from multi-level and multi-view and provide a holistic view of complex cellular signaling pathways. However, it remains challenging to integrate and interpret multi-omics data for mining critical biomarkers. Graph AI models have been widely used to analyze graph-structure datasets, and are ideal for integrative multi-omics data analysis because they can naturally integrate and represent multi-omics data as a biologically meaningful multi-level signaling graph and interpret multi-omics data via graph node and edge ranking analysis. Nevertheless, it is nontrivial for graph-AI model developers to pre-analyze multi-omics data and …
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts. In Colombia, the Magdalena River – the country’s most important river basin – …

Analgesic Potential Of The Mimosa Pudica L. Leaf Decoction Using The Primary Dysmenorrhea Mouse Model, Paula Bianca D. De Guzman, Maria Dalisay G. Maligalig
Journal Article
Primary dysmenorrhea, a common menstrual pain, is often treated with nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may cause side effects. In contrast, herbal medicine, such as Mimosa pudica L., has been used in the Philippines due to its accessibility and reportedly fewer side effects. This study investigated the analgesic potential of an aqueous M. pudica leaf decoction in a primary dysmenorrhea mouse model. Phytochemical analysis of the extract was also conducted and results revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, sterols, triterpenoids, and glycosides. Twenty sexually mature female ICR mice (Mus musculus) were orally pretreated with estradiol valerate for …

BACKGROUND: The term 'care-experienced' refers to anyone who is currently in care or has been in care at any stage in their life. A complex interplay of factors leads to care-experienced children and young people (CECYP) experiencing poorer oral health and access to dental care than their peers. A rapid review of the co-production of health and social care research with vulnerable children and young people (CYP) was carried out to inform the development of a co-produced research project exploring the oral health behaviours and access to dental services of CECYP. Here, 'co-production' refers to the involvement of CYP in …

Utilising Blood-Derived Products For Guided Tissue Regeneration In Periradicular Surgery: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Gabriele Baniulyte, Lorna Burns, Kamran Ali
Peninsula Dental School
BackgroundSince 1982, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has become increasingly popular. The recent progress in GTR research focuses on the application of blood-derived products. However, no comprehensive systematic review has been conducted to assess its effectiveness specifically in periradicular surgery. Therefore, the aim of this review was to analyse the outcomes of root-end surgery compared to periapical surgery incorporating GTR using blood-derived products.MethodsThis review involved randomised controlled trials exploring the comparison between GTR utilising blood-derived products and the conventional periapical surgery. The databases Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source were searched, with the most recent search conducted …

Peninsula Dental School
Purpose: To evaluate the design of undergraduate curricula, teaching and learning practices, assessments, admission criteria and quality assurance in dental schools across Middle Eastern and Arab-speaking African nations. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was sent to 40 dental colleges in the Middle East and African Arabic-speaking countries. A purposefully designed proforma consisting of 21 items divided into five sections based on admission criteria, curriculum delivery, teaching and learning practices, assessment methods, and quality assurance was used for data collection on Google forms. Participation in the survey was voluntary and all participants were consented before data collection. The data was analysed for …
