The Robert Philips Lane World War II Letters collection consists of letters written by Robert P. Lane to his parents during World War II. Dr. Robert Philips Lane (1914-1977) was a Professor of English and Department Chair at Winthrop College from 1962-1977. Most of the letters originated in India, where he was stationed for a lengthy period of time. Also included in this collection are blank letter sheet envelopes which were the U.S. official V-Mail. They were specifically used to write letters to the armed forces overseas.

The Ermine Willfong Papers consists of material collected by Ermine Willfong. Ermine Baskin Willfong (1886-1972) was a 1906 Winthrop graduate and a professor of music at Winthrop College from 1907-1951. Most of the papers were collected and pertain to her career in music at Winthrop. The collection consists of concert programs (most performed at Winthrop College), newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, notes, songbooks, and photographs.

The Betty Bullock Hamilton Papers consists of material related to Mrs. Hamilton and her family. Elizabeth Marjane Bullock “Betty” Hamilton (1929-2005) was a 1950 Winthrop College graduate. Some of the materials are related to her husband Robert Briggs “Bobby” Hamilton Jr. (1925-2015) who was a graduate of Rock Hill High School. The collection consists of correspondence, pens, postcards, clippings, report cards, ticket stubs, invitations, books of club rules, regulations and members, programs from Churches, clubs, commencement ceremonies and entertainment sponsored by Winthrop University.

We develop a model of venture capital contracting and use it to evaluate an emergent set of judicial precedents in corporate law, which we label the Trados doctrine. In our model, founders hold common stock, while venture capital investors hold convertible preferred stock. We show that preferred shareholders have inefficient incentives to liquidate low-valued firms and to continue high-valued firms, while common shareholders inefficiently favor the opposite. The extent of incentive misalignment depends on the firm’s intrinsic and outside valuations, and it is most severe around preferred shareholders’ liquidation preference and conversion point. In 2023, New York enacted laws to aid the state in achieving the renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction mandates of the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).The state also now has new laws to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water and paint; to ban natural gas furnaces and stoves in new buildings; to restrict neonicotinoid pesticides; and to encourage “nature-based solutions” for stabilizing tidal coastlines. These and other new and amended environmental and energy laws—as well as notable vetoes—are discussed in this article.

The problem is that much of this commentary has focused on the partnership tax issues in the case and not on the international tax issue, which is the source of the relevant income. The impending collapse of pillar 1 of the OECD’s base erosion and profit-shifting 2.0 project means that many countries are likely to join Austria, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom in enacting digital services taxes. There is a moratorium on new DSTs that has been extended until the end of 2024, but any extension beyond that is unlikely because the elimination of DSTs was premised on pillar 1 coming into effect, and that cannot happen without U.S. ratification of the multilateral tax convention (MLC). “Crypto Winter” refers to a systemic event that occurred in the cryptocurrency ecosystem—what we call “crypto space”—in 2022. Crypto space was wracked by plummeting crypto prices, the troubles of a large crypto hedge fund, and runs on many crypto lending platforms. Several large crypto firms went bankrupt. Collectively, everyday people lost billions of dollars. And crypto investors are still feeling the aftershocks.

In his famous 1960 article, William Prosser identified four privacy torts: Disclosure of Private Facts, False Light Invasion of Privacy, Appropriation of Likeness, and Intrusion Upon Seclusion. Although each was recognized in the Second Torts Restatement and by various courts, the false light tort seems to have foundered. Indeed, starting in the late 1980s, prominent courts rejected it and many academics have expressed grave misgivings about it. Often interpreted as a kind of ‘defamation lite,’ the tort seems to its critics an ill-defined wrong that clever lawyers invoke to evade important limitations on defamation liability.

Achieving precise 6 degrees of freedom (6D) pose estimation of rigid objects from color images is a critical challenge with wide-ranging applications in robotics and close-contact aircraft operations. This study investigates key techniques in the application of YOLOv5 object detection convolutional neural network (CNN) for 6D pose localization of aircraft using only color imagery. Traditional object detection labeling methods suffer from inaccuracies due to perspective geometry and being limited to visible key points. The flute works of Claude Arrieu (1903-1990) are relatively unknown, as is Arrieu herself. A composer active throughout the twentieth century and a radio producer in Paris during the 1930s and 1940s, Arrieu and her music are now often lost amongst the more popular works of her French contemporaries. Her compositional output, which includes music written for traditional concerts and over seventy scores for radio and film, displays her ease in navigating the early twentieth century’s changing mediums of music performance. INTRODUCTION: Cancer patients may have increased risk for adverse cardiac events, but our understanding of cardiovascular risk in thymic cancer patients is not clear. We sought to characterize baseline cardiometabolic risk factors before thymic cancer diagnosis and the potential association between cancer treatment and subsequent cardiac events.

METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study evaluating patients with thymic cancer from 2003 to 2020 compared to age- and sex-matched controls without cancer. Baseline cardiovascular risk factors, cancer characteristics, and incidence of cardiac events were collected from the health information exchange. Sit-to-stand transfers (STST) are crucial for daily activities, reflecting varied movement strategies influenced by musculoskeletal factors. This study explores the utility of assessing STST using relative height. Three participants of diverse heights were analyzed across four relative height intensities. Sagittal plane hip kinematics and center of gravity velocity were measured. Results revealed proportional increases in center of gravity velocity with height variation, suggesting a practical approach for assessing STST. This method offers potential for developing graded assessment protocols for older adults and diseased populations.

This study aimed to combat burnout in Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) who were providing services to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), aged 2-10, within a clinic setting. Participants selected were [8] RBTs working 30-40 hours per week. Participants were asked to complete the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) 1-2 times daily. This survey included various questions that score respondent’s current levels of burnout. A multiple baseline design was used to assess the impact of a brief Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training on participant burnout scores on the CBI. Coverage path planning (CPP) is the problem of covering all points in an environment and is a well-researched topic in robotics due to its sheer practical relevance. This paper investigates such an offline CPP problem where the primary objective is to minimize the path length to achieve complete coverage. Furthermore, the literature suggests that taking turns leads to a higher energy use than going straight. Tardigrades have a highly simplified anteroposterior (AP) axis. The mechanisms that regulate the development of this secondarily simplified AP axis are not known. In many animals, the canonical Wnt (cWnt) signaling pathway regulates primary axis establishment through antagonistic interactions with inhibitors of cWnt signaling. This study investigated the roles of shaggy, an inhibitor of cWnt signaling, in regulating development in the tardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris. Gene expression patterns of shaggy and other components of the cWnt signaling pathway were analyzed alongside markers of anterior and posterior identity using Hybridization Chain Reaction in situ in H. exemplaris. Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the causal relationship between both subjectively and objectively measured sedentary time (ST) and physical activity (PA) with heart failure (HF) risk, utilizing Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach.

Methods: The present MR used genetic instruments identified for self-reported ST and PA extracted from 51 genome wide association studies (GWAS), encompassing data from 703,901 individuals. The GWAS identified 89 independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with leisure screen time. Eleven loci were reported to be associated with moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). From another GWAS examining accelerometer-based activities, three loci were found to …
