Game Theoretic Analysis Of The Feedback Loop Caused By Widely Available Computer Estimation On Market Values, Viorel Silaghi, Zobaida Alssadi, Ben Mathew, Majed Alotaibi, Ali Alqarni, Marius Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Public availability of computer generated predictions can change the markets and its impact is here investigated with a game theoretic approach. Real estate inflation is not a new phenomenon but its consistent and almost monotonous persistence over unusually many years, coinciding with new prominence of public estimation information from successful Mass Real Estate Estimators (MREE) already caused various independent research organizations to investigate potential links. What we model is a repetitive theoretical game between the MREEs and the home owners, where each player has secret information and expertise. In contrast to competing results, for our model and simulations a restriction …

Mutually Assured Discussion: Lessons From Space Law For A Waning Nuclear Arms Regime, Elsbeth J. Magilton

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

This paper investigates the usefulness of applying the lessons of the Artemis Accords (“Accords”) to the nuclear arms regime – specifically asking whether strategic soft law agreements could create a stop gap for the shortcomings of long held nuclear arms agreements. To do so, it explores multiple instruments of international law, their uses in the existing nuclear and space frameworks, and how that may inform future actions for security or arms agreements. In conclusion, it is determined that the approach developed by the Accords may benefit future nuclear arms communications. The Accords bring many states to the table, largely underscoring …

Populist Secularism, Seval Yildirim Jan 2024

Populist Secularism, Seval Yildirim

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

This article argues that in the context of a developing democracy, the rise of religiously oriented parties should be viewed contextually as part of an ongoing process of democratic negotiation and consolidation. Using Turkey as a case study, this article argues that religion and secularism are best viewed as parts of a symbiotic relationship, informing each other’s identity, and defining characteristics through an ongoing process of negotiation. The article discusses commonly used concepts relevant to secularism in general and argues for the need to distinguish between the secular, secularism, and secularization as a governance project. Through a historical survey of …

"{W]E Have Had Enough Revolutions": International Advocacy Strategies Through The Lens Of Russian Political Prisoners, Elena Macomber Jan 2024

"{W]E Have Had Enough Revolutions": International Advocacy Strategies Through The Lens Of Russian Political Prisoners, Elena Macomber

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

Authoritarian states are not known for promoting freedom of expression. In order to maintain power, successful authoritarian governments must restrict oppositional voices to survive. However, as a matter of institutional legitimacy in the eyes of their people, many regimes still superficially hold elections, request opinions from their constitutional courts, and even incorporate human rights protections into national laws. Such is the case in the Russian Federation, where the government strives to appear democratic despite its widespread repression. Behind the arguably feeble appearance of a legitimately elected government with constitutional safeguards, the Russian legal system systemically punishes and incarcerates political dissidents. …

A Power Move In The Solar Trade Arena? How The Inflation Reduction Act's Preference For Domestically Produced Solar Products May Conflict With International Trade Rules, Maria Pfister Jan 2024

A Power Move In The Solar Trade Arena? How The Inflation Reduction Act's Preference For Domestically Produced Solar Products May Conflict With International Trade Rules, Maria Pfister

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

When the Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”)—described as “the most important climate action in U.S. history”—was passed in August of 2022, it came as a surprise not only to the citizens of the United States, but also to key Senators who helped pass the legislation. In the past decade, the United States had seemingly abdicated its role as a global leader in addressing climate change. When this law, with a title that has little to do with environmental legislation, burst onto the world stage, it signaled that the United States’ was working to reclaim its role as a global leader in …

Innovative Approaches To On-Demand Continuing Legal Education Ethics Training: A Case Study, Tigran W. Eldred, Molly J. Walker Wilson Jan 2024

Innovative Approaches To On-Demand Continuing Legal Education Ethics Training: A Case Study, Tigran W. Eldred, Molly J. Walker Wilson

Faculty Scholarship

In the ongoing discussions about continuing legal education (CLE), concerns have been raised about the quality of programming that is created and delivered. Critics have emphasized the weaknesses in mandatory programs, arguing that requiring annual training on topics such as legal ethics tends to fall short of stated goals.1 Too often, it is said, such programs fail to deliver content in an engaging manner that is likely to improve competence.2 The picture conjured up is of the bored lawyer, sitting in the back of a room flipping through a newspaper or some other distraction, as CLE instructors passively …

This paper presents LEVIOSA, a novel framework for text- and speech-based uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectory generation. By leveraging multimodal large language models (LLMs) to interpret natural language commands, the system converts text and audio inputs into executable flight paths for UAV swarms. The approach aims to simplify the complex task of multi-UAV trajectory generation, which has significant applications in fields such as search and rescue, agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and entertainment. The framework involves two key innovations: a multi-critic consensus mechanism to evaluate trajectory quality and a hierarchical prompt structuring for improved task execution. The innovations ensure fidelity to user …

Regulator Preferences And Underinvestment In Drinking Water Infrastructure, Chunyu Guo Jan 2024

Regulator Preferences And Underinvestment In Drinking Water Infrastructure, Chunyu Guo

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The infrastructure of U.S. drinking water systems faces chronic issues of low quality and underinvestment. As the water utilities in the U.S. are typically managed and regulated at the local municipal level, investment levels depend on the municipal regulator's preferences. Drawing from a dynamic framework, I specify and estimate the local regulators' objective function over drinking water infrastructure investment. This framework highlights the tradeoff between profit and consumer surplus and reveals how regulator preferences can deviate from net surplus optimization, resulting in underinvestment. My findings provide significant evidence that the drinking water infrastructure is underinvested. I reveal that the regulator's …

A Combinatorial Model For Affine Demazure Crystals Of Levels Zero And One, Samuel Spellman Jan 2024

A Combinatorial Model For Affine Demazure Crystals Of Levels Zero And One, Samuel Spellman

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The symmetric and non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are special families of orthogonal polynomials with parameters q and t. They are indexed by dominant, (resp. arbitrary) weights associated to a root system and generalize several well-known polynomials such as the Schur polynomials, Jack polynomials, Hall-Littlewood polynomials, etc. There are two well-known combinatorial models for computing these polynomials: a tableau model in type A, due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, and a type-independent model due to Ram and Yip, based on alcove walks.

Crystals bases are an important construction encoding information about Lie algebra representations. It turns out that there is an interesting …

Understanding Local And Large-Scale Drivers Of Rainfall Variability And Change Over The Hawaiian Islands Region, Katrina Fandrich Jan 2024

Understanding Local And Large-Scale Drivers Of Rainfall Variability And Change Over The Hawaiian Islands Region, Katrina Fandrich

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Hawaiian rainfall variability is strongly influenced by anthropogenic climate change and natural variability (e.g., Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Pacific North American (PNA) pattern, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)). For local decision-makers and resource managers, understanding the drivers of rainfall variability and change in Hawai‘i is crucial for climate adaptation and mitigation planning. Previous studies have applied statistical and dynamical downscaling to produce high-resolution rainfall projections for the Hawaiian Islands region. However, to date, downscaling has only been used to investigate the influence of anthropogenic forcing on late-century rainfall projections for the Hawaiian Islands. For regions like Hawai’i, that are highly vulnerable …

This study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to understand both the experience and expression of transphobia toward non-binary people from within the LGBTQ+ community. Twelve interviews were conducted with six non-binary individuals ranging in age from 23 to 33. Each interview was analyzed and coded, resulting in four superordinate themes: The Experience of Enbyphobia, The Impact of Enbyphobia, The Expression of Enbyphobia, and The …

Developing Cellular Systems To Elucidate Rna Structural Dynamics Of Cag Expansion Transcripts In Spinocerebellar Ataxias, Victoria Demeo Jan 2024

Developing Cellular Systems To Elucidate Rna Structural Dynamics Of Cag Expansion Transcripts In Spinocerebellar Ataxias, Victoria Demeo

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a diverse group of over 40 genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorders, many of which are caused by a trinucleotide CAG repeat expansion in the coding region of specific genes. These expansions lead to the production of polyglutamine (polyQ) tracts that interfere with normal protein function, triggering cellular dysfunction and contributing to disease pathogenesis. The most well-known of these SCAs, such as SCA1, SCA2, and SCA3, exhibit progressive neurodegeneration, yet the precise mechanisms through which these mutations cause disease remain poorly understood.

A significant challenge in studying CAG repeat expansion disorders lies in the complexity of the disease …

Androgen Regulation Of The Hpa Axis And Stress-Related Behaviors In Mice: The Role Of Crf And Crf Receptor 1, Krystyna Ann Rybka Jan 2024

Androgen Regulation Of The Hpa Axis And Stress-Related Behaviors In Mice: The Role Of Crf And Crf Receptor 1, Krystyna Ann Rybka

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Mood disorders such as anxiety and depression are nearly twice as prevalent in women when compared to men, with potential contributing factors involving sex-dependent exposure to gonadal hormones and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Androgen actions through androgen receptors (AR) or actions at estrogen receptors such as ERα, following the conversion of androgens to estradiol, have been shown to regulate stress-related behaviors as well as HPA axis responsiveness. Where androgen actions at AR appear to decrease the stress response and subsequent stress-related behaviors, actions at ERα seem to do the opposite and increase HPA axis reactivity. When the HPA …

Dishes Of Yesteryear: Memories, Stories, And Representations Of The Past Within Food Media, Diana Willis Bottomley Jan 2024

Dishes Of Yesteryear: Memories, Stories, And Representations Of The Past Within Food Media, Diana Willis Bottomley

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

In 1963, Julia Child revolutionized cooking television. Child’s The French Chef, which ran for ten years on the Boston public television station, WGBH, changed how American’s viewed, produced, and consumed food. And in the sixty years since Child’s debut, food media has grown in scope and popularity, increasingly altering how we communicate identity in and through food and foodways. In this dissertation, I examine the relation between food, media, and memory, with particular attention to: how the past moderates the connection between food and identity; how food media produce a sense of place integral to identity; and how food …

Protecting Foreign Victims Of Trafficking In Iceland: An Interpretive Analysis Of Policy Efforts, Hlin Saethorsdottir

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Social justice and human rights are fundamental principles of social work. Today’s globalized world requires social workers to expand their local perspectives and to be alert to the negative sides of globalization, such as trafficking in person (TIP), which affects all countries around the world. TIP is a severe form of exploitation and a grave human rights violation (Jones et al., 2007). Iceland has been categorized as a transit and destination country for foreign victims who are mainly trafficked for sexual and labor exploitation (U.S. Department of State, 2016b).

Although much has been written on TIP, some scholars have pointed …
