Sexism, Racism, And Classism In Netflix’S Docuseries Formula 1: Drive To Survive, Grace Cushing

Comm-entary

This essay critically analyzes Netflix’s sports docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Netflix’s docuseries dramatizes Formula One, which is arguably the highest level of international motorsport. Through strategic portrayals of events in and surrounding the sport, Netflix creates an entertaining but incomplete narrative of different Formula One seasons. This analysis examines the sexism, racism, and classism that are not only present in Formula One, but which also undermine the docuseries. Formula One is known to be a male-dominated, primarily white, and economically elite sport. This essay evaluates the various features of Formula 1: Drive to Survive that perpetuate these traits …

The Power Of Action, Giavanna Fioretti

Comm-entary

This essay analyzes a constructive conversation me and my roommate Kaylee had with a friend of ours, Teddy. This conversation presented itself after Kaylee and I witnessing a form of a microaggression. It was not intended with harm, but the conversation was one that we felt we needed to discuss. This essay emphasizes the impact of action and how it can be put to very good use. It also discusses how Teddy felt after the conversation, as opposed to how Kaylee and I felt after discussing this issue with him. This conversation was handled with kindness, as well as attempting …

Hybrid Triboelectric-Piezoelectric Nanogenerator For Long-Term Load Monitoring In Total Knee Replacements, Mahmood Chahari, Emre Salman, Ryan Willing, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

A self-powered and durable pressure sensor for large-scale pressure detection on the knee implant would be highly advantageous for designing long- lasting and reliable knee implants as well as obtaining information about knee function after the operation. The purpose of this study is to develop a robust energy harvester that can convert wide ranges of pressure to electricity to power a load sensor inside the knee implant. To efficiently convert loads to electricity, we design a cuboid-array-structured tribo-pizoelectric nanogenerator (TPENG) in vertical contact mode inside a knee implant package. The proposed TPENG is fabricated with aluminum and cuboid-patterned silicone rubber …

Towards Self-Powered Load Imbalance Detection For Instrumented Knee Implants Using Quadrant Triboelectric Energy Harvesters, Mahmood Chahari, Hoesin Haghshenas, Emre Salman, Milutin Stanacevic, Ryan Willing, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

In this study, we proposed a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as a pressure sensor to measure the load imbalance on the tibial tray. To detect the load imbalance, we proposed a segmented quadrant design. The TENG pressure sensors with various micro-patterns, including pyramid, cylindrical, and bar patterns, are utilized to measure the axial forces with different sensitivity in different quadrants of the tibial tray. The functionality of the instrumented implant is examined through experimental testing on the package, evaluating its sensing capabilities and power harvesting. The relationship between each quadrant output and the axial force is determined, which enables characterizing the …

The Ongoing Relevance Of Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Edward Ulrich Jan 2024

The Ongoing Relevance Of Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Edward Ulrich

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

SRI AUROBINDO has a mixed legacy. Among Indians he has both admirers and detractors. Those who admire him tend to include Bengalis who celebrate his role in the freedom struggle, devotees of his spiritual path, and Hindu nationalists who regard his synthesis of religion and nationalism as a forerunner of their agenda. Critics regard him as a traditionalist, a communalist, and a terrorist. However, both critics and admirers on the Hindu right tend to have a superficial read of this complex man. Also, writings by devotees of his spiritual path tend not to remedy the situation, as they generally focus …

Generalized Conditional Feedback System With Model Uncertainty, Chengbo Dai, Zhiqiang Gao, Yangquan Chen, Donghai Li Jan 2024

Generalized Conditional Feedback System With Model Uncertainty, Chengbo Dai, Zhiqiang Gao, Yangquan Chen, Donghai Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Model uncertainty creates a largely open challenge for industrial process control, which causes a trade-off between robustness and performance optimality. In such a case, we propose a generalized conditional feedback (GCF) system to largely eliminate conflicts between robustness and performance optimality. This approach leverages a nominal model to design an optimal control in the virtual domain and defines an ancillary feedback controller to drive the physical process to track the trajectory of the virtual domain. The effectiveness of the proposed GCF scheme is demonstrated in a simulation for six typical industrial processes and three model-based control methods, and in a …

It is commonly reported that rare variants may be more functionally related to complex diseases than common variants. However, individual rare variant association tests remain challenging due to low minor allele frequency in the available samples. This paper proposes an expectation maximization variable selection (EMVS) method to simultaneously detect common and rare variants at the individual variant level using family trio data. TRIO_RVEMVS was assessed in both large (1500 families) and small (350 families) datasets based on simulation. The performance of TRIO_RVEMVS was compared with gene-level kernel and burden association tests that use pedigree data (PedGene) and rare-variant extensions of …

Cow's milk is frequently included in the human diet, but the relationship between milk intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains controversial. Here, using data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, we show that in both sexes, higher milk intake is associated with lower risk of T2D in lactase non-persistent (LNP) individuals (determined by a variant of the lactase LCT gene, single nucleotide polymorphism rs4988235 ) but not in lactase persistent individuals. We validate this finding in the UK Biobank. Further analyses reveal that among LNP individuals, higher milk intake is associated with alterations in gut microbiota (for …
