Concepts in Animal Parasitology
An overview of fleas, order Siphonaptera Latreille, 1825, the adults of which are highly specialized holometabolous arthropods adapted to parasitic life and are morphologically very different from other insects. Fleas are parasites of birds and mammals, but their greatest specific richness is associated with rodents. There are nearly 3,000 species and subspecies placed in 19 families that are currently known worldwide. Includes discussion of the general morphology of the imago, larva, pupa, and eggs, their morphological adaptation to parasitism, phylogeny, systematics, taxonomy, geographic distribution, host associations, biology, reproduction, and medical and veterinary importance.

Closing The Culture Gaps: Policies And Codesign In Remote Western Australia. A Long-Time Story Of A Community-Based Kimberley Aboriginal Organisation, Arjati Schipf
Theses
This research is the result of a collaboration with the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Cultural Centre (KALACC), a remote community-based Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) located in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia. The research investigates the organisation’s strategies to overcome systemic barriers to support remote Aboriginal communities to achieve Closing the Gap (CTG) socioeconomic targets in improving education, employment, and health. KALACC believes that without culture at the centre of CTG strategies, the targets will not be achieved. The key question is how will diverse understandings of culture be achieved through codesign and engagement with Aboriginal people and their community-based organisations …

Living Charity: Beata Caterina, The Pizzicaiuoli Altarpiece And Lived Religion In Fifteenth-Century Siena, Susan A. Nolan
Theses
This thesis examines charity as a key element of early modern experience in the context of the Pizzicaiuoli altarpiece (1447). Painted by well-known artist Giovanni di Paolo, the altarpiece was commissioned by the Sienese guild of grocers, the Pizzicaiuoli, and was situated in the church of the Santissima Annunziata, located in the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. The central focus of the altarpiece is the main panel depicting the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Presentation), which is surrounded by iconic images of saints. Below the Presentation scene, in a predella (the lowermost horizontal component of …

Law And Identity: Whether The 2013 Amendments To The Sex Discrimination Act Are Laws With Respect To External Affairs, Joshua Paul Anderson
Theses
The external affairs power under the Australian Constitution gives the Commonwealth Parliament the power to pass legislation that implements the obligations in bona fide treaties to which Australia is a party, provided that the legislation is reasonably appropriate and adapted to that purpose.
The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (‘SDA’) was passed to implement the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1981) (‘CEDAW’). There has never been any serious doubt that the SDA, as originally passed, is a valid law with respect to external affairs. The SDA was progressively amended to prohibit discrimination on …
A Paradox Theory Approach To Investigating Individual Level Responses To Corporate Social Responsibility In Small To Medium Enterprises, Muhammad Abdulsater
A Paradox Theory Approach To Investigating Individual Level Responses To Corporate Social Responsibility In Small To Medium Enterprises, Muhammad Abdulsater
Theses
In Australia, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) occupy important positions within their communities, contributing to employment and national economic growth. Despite their significance, it remains unclear how SME owners, as individuals, navigate and respond to the tensions arising from their unique business characteristics and the adoption of social and environmental activities. This research aims to bridge this knowledge gap by investigating how SME owners manage and respond to paradoxical tensions in implementing social and environmental responsibility practices within the SME context. The conventional definition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) does not integrate with the lexicon or landscape of SMEs. This …

Objective: Stroke remains a significant public health concern, with ischemic strokes being the most common type, contributing to high mortality and disability rates. The standard thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is intravenous alteplase. Tenecteplase (TNK), a genetically modified tissue plasminogen activator, has become an alternative because it works well to treat myocardial infarction. This study compares TNK and alteplase in treating AIS patients, evaluating outcomes such as door-to-needle time (DTN) particular in CT result to needle puncture time, financial implications associated with shorter patient’s length of stay, NIHSS scores and the incidence of post-hemorrhagic events.

Do We Have Agency? Early Childhood Educators' Experience Of Pedagogical Agency In Providing Child Agency, Clare Maree Omodei
Theses
The National Quality Standards (NQS) are the key means of assessing quality in early childhood education in Australia. In Western Australia, teachers in schools are expected to implement a modified NQS from kindergarten to Year 2 (K–2) that has been specifically developed for school settings, hereafter referred to as NQSWA. Like other early years educators, K–2 teachers in Western Australia are required to demonstrate adherence to approved learning frameworks and to value young children’s ideas, interests and opinions. These educators need to demonstrate that each child is afforded agency and that they are given the opportunity to make choices and …
Cancer Induced Bone Pain: Pain Classification And Management, Merlina Sulistio
Cancer Induced Bone Pain: Pain Classification And Management, Merlina Sulistio
Theses
Pain is a multidimensional personal experience influenced by biological, psychological, social and cultural factors. In the context of cancer pain, particularly cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP), it is essential that clinicians assess the multidimensional nature of pain to fully understand the patient’s pain experience, which often involves an evoked sense of both vulnerability and mortality.
Bone metastases are highly prevalent in advanced cancer, resulting in CIBP being one of the most common cancer pain syndromes. CIBP affects a patient’s physical and social functioning, reduces quality of life, increases psychological distress and often results in hospice or hospital admission. Yet, there is …
Prevalence Of Peristomal Skin Complications In The First 12 Weeks Post-Discharge Following Urinary/Faecal Stoma Formation Surgery, Tania Norman
Theses
Background
An ostomy is a surgically created opening and can be performed to divert faecal effluent by exteriorisation of a segment of the small bowel otherwise known as the ilium, or from the large bowel otherwise known as the colon. A urinary diversion of effluent generally involves exteriorisation of a segment of ileum into which the ureters have been anastomosed. The exteriorised segment of bowel is referred to as a stoma and individuals who have had a stoma created often refer to themselves as an ‘ostomate’. The skin surrounding a stoma is referred to as peristomal skin.
Peristomal skin complications …
An Entangled But Separate System: Examining The Experiences Of Colonial Offenders In Western Australia, 1829-1868, Emily Lanman
An Entangled But Separate System: Examining The Experiences Of Colonial Offenders In Western Australia, 1829-1868, Emily Lanman
Theses
Crime and punishment are omnipresent features of Western Australia’s colonial history. The establishment of a colony on invaded Noongar boodja in 1829 is indicative of the first criminal act. Within six months, a system of incarceration had been established for British offenders. Despite this, the importation of male imperial convicts from Britain and Ireland between 1850 and 1868 has become synonymous with the colony’s penal history. The historiographical preoccupation with imperial convicts ignores the people convicted within the colony, and subsequently, their lived experiences have been overlooked. This is to the detriment of understanding offenders, their motivations, and their interactions …
The Light Of Hope: Representations Of Salvation In The Great North Window Of St Mary’S Cathedral, Sydney, Carolyn Amy Lewis Flynn
The Light Of Hope: Representations Of Salvation In The Great North Window Of St Mary’S Cathedral, Sydney, Carolyn Amy Lewis Flynn
Theses
St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney is considered to be the Mother Church of Australia. Yet, the rich architectural and artistic heritage contained therein has been little studied. This is an interdisciplinary study of John Hardman Powell’s Great North Window in that cathedral. It draws on theological and art historical research methods to interrogate the window’s underlying meanings, and the aims of its patrons. An examination of the doctrinal, devotional, and theological writings of the nineteenth century shows that this stained-glass window reflects the period’s understanding of salvation history. The window, firstly, tells the story of salvation through the stories about …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Vaginal Breech Birth Training Program, Kathleen Lynch, Rachel Mackriell
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Vaginal Breech Birth Training Program, Kathleen Lynch, Rachel Mackriell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction: Most providers do not have the skills, knowledge, or confidence to safely support vaginal breech birth (VBB) despite 3-5% of all pregnancies being breech at term. The presence of a provider skilled in VBB reduces risk in VBB, however VBB skills are not a standard part of birth provider training. Identifying an effective instruction method can make VBB training more accessible.
Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis of 3940 surveys submitted by self-selected participants in an international hybrid VBB training program from May 2021 to February 2024. Pre- to post-training analysis using non-paired t-test and chi-squared comparison was …
