Beginnings: Nsw Teachers' Views On The Early Stages Of Implementing A New National Curriculum, Julie-Anne Seach

Theses

This PhD study researched NSW teachers’ conceptions of curriculum change after the introduction of a new Australian national curriculum. One key rationale for the development of a national curriculum in Australia was to raise the standard of education by providing excellent curriculum to students in all Australian states and territories. However, educational standards improve through a combination of many factors, including quality teaching.

A curriculum’s success is dependent on the teachers who implement it. While the curriculum itself garnered considerable attention, how classroom teachers responded to it was likely to be a contributing factor to its overall success. Yet, there …

Development Of A Continuum Damage Constitutive Model And Simulation For Brittle Materials In Space Infrastructure Application, Luis Eduardo Deganis Jan 2024

Development Of A Continuum Damage Constitutive Model And Simulation For Brittle Materials In Space Infrastructure Application, Luis Eduardo Deganis

Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to develop a continuum damage constitutive material model and apply it to structural response characterization of brittle materials for in-situ construction of space infrastructure. This research improves and expands the utility of the physics-based dominant crack algorithm (DCA) model in order to account for very low-strain rate phenomena in plain concrete structures. The DCA model is strain-rate dependent and has been effectively utilized for highly dynamic phenomena. The model has a strong basis in micromechanics and is able to capture the strain-softening response of brittle materials. The newly developed constitutive model can be easily …

The new technique can be deployed in spectroscopy absorption detection, femtoseconds laser cavities, or any off -axis spherical mirror interferometers applications. Such a system can be uniquely designed and evaluated by entering a few parameters that define the required physics for the cell, the packaging size limits for the system and the probe beam size, plus two user selected parameters. The existing design method, developed by Herriott, is discussed and then the yӯ diagram method is presented …

Application Of A New Scale-Resolving Turbulence Model To Supersonic Retropropulsion Flows With Chemistry, Gabriel C. Nastac Jan 2024

Application Of A New Scale-Resolving Turbulence Model To Supersonic Retropropulsion Flows With Chemistry, Gabriel C. Nastac

Dissertations

Turbulent compressible flows are ubiquitous in many engineering applications of flight and propulsion. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are commonly performed to analyze these flows. Scale-resolving turbulence models inherently better capture various flow phenomena, including separation and mixing, as well as enable predictions of fluctuations, which can be critical for design compared to traditional steady-state turbulence models. In this work, new scale-resolving blended Partially-Averaged Navier-Stokes (BPANS) turbulence models are developed to account for compressibility effects and are employed to efficiently simulate turbulent compressible flows. Specifically, supersonic retropropulsion flows are investigated. Supersonic retropropulsion is a key technology for next-generation rockets. The new …

Thermal Processing Of Al-Zn-Cu-Mg-Zr Laser Powder Bed Fusion Material For Increased Ductility, Jeffrey S. Gaddes Jan 2024

Thermal Processing Of Al-Zn-Cu-Mg-Zr Laser Powder Bed Fusion Material For Increased Ductility, Jeffrey S. Gaddes

Dissertations

Although the use of wrought high strength aluminum alloys is prevalent throughout aerospace systems, they often have long lead times and become difficult to source throughout the long lifecycle of aviation systems. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides opportunity to directly manufacture wrought equivalent aluminum products without forging supply chain challenges. If these LBPF components are made with the same aluminum material system with similar strength and ductility, they can be a direct replacement for traditionally manufactured components. However, existing 7xxx aluminum alloys are prone to cracking during fusion welding and therefore are not readily produced through …

Coronal Magnetic Field Extrapolation And Topological Analysis Of Multi-Scale Magnetic Structures For Solar Eruptions, Wen He Jan 2024

Coronal Magnetic Field Extrapolation And Topological Analysis Of Multi-Scale Magnetic Structures For Solar Eruptions, Wen He

Dissertations

Solar eruptions are manifestations of strong solar activities which occur in multiple scales and vary significantly in observations. It has also been increasingly realized that some scenarios initially proposed for relatively large-scale eruptions may persist down to much smaller/finer scales, largely owing to increasingly high-resolution observations of the Sun. However, confirming the coherent magnetic structures on the Sun remains challenging due to the lack of direct coronal magnetic field measurement. This dissertation mainly focuses on the topological analysis of multi-scale magnetic structures embodied in different solar eruptions with available observations. It is achieved by reconstructing the 3D coronal magnetic field …

Context-Aware Machine Learning For Low-Burden Brain-Computer Interfaces, T. Warren De Wit Jan 2024

Context-Aware Machine Learning For Low-Burden Brain-Computer Interfaces, T. Warren De Wit

Dissertations

We are interested in the utility that artificially intelligent mobile systems such as drones offer to personnel in fast-paced, high-stakes situations such as disaster relief that demand real-time situational awareness. Ideally, these assistive systems place no additional cognitive or physical burden on their user; rather, they should respond to the user's intent with minimal physical or cognitive impact. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are already widely applied in both brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and drone navigation. We propose leveraging the robust computer-vision based AI that exists on modern drones to use objects as waypoints and fly a reconnaissance drone …

Land-Atmosphere Interactions Over Cities : Urban Effects On Tree Canopy Temperature And Local Cloud Patterns, Thuy Trang Vo Jan 2024

Land-Atmosphere Interactions Over Cities : Urban Effects On Tree Canopy Temperature And Local Cloud Patterns, Thuy Trang Vo

Dissertations

Understanding land-atmosphere (L-A) interactions is critical for predicting Earth’s system and its functionality. This dissertation advances knowledge in three aspects involving L-A interactions at different scales. The first study asks how city-wide tree canopy temperatures vary diurnally, and what environmental factors and to what extent they contribute to its spatiotemporal variation. Despite the importance of urban trees’ surface temperature in assess-ing micro-climate interactions between trees and the surrounding environment, their diurnal evolution has been largely understudied at a city-wide scale. The research highlights the more important role of the greenspace coverage in controlling the daytime canopy temperature, while, surrounding buildings …
