A Cytosine Analogue 5-Azacitidine Improves The Accumulation Of Licochalcone A In Licorice Glycyrrhiza Inflata., Xiaoling Ma, Ningxin Jiang, Jingxian Fu, Yuping Li, Lijun Zhou, Ling Yuan, Ying Wang, Yongqing Li Jan 2024

A Cytosine Analogue 5-Azacitidine Improves The Accumulation Of Licochalcone A In Licorice Glycyrrhiza Inflata., Xiaoling Ma, Ningxin Jiang, Jingxian Fu, Yuping Li, Lijun Zhou, Ling Yuan, Ying Wang, Yongqing Li

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Licochalcone A (LCA) is a characteristic compound of Glycyrrhiza inflata with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antitumor activities. However, G. inflata produces LCA in low quantities that does not meet the market demand. In this study, we found that DNA methylation inhibitor 5-azacitidine (5-azaC) successfully improved the LCA contents in G. inflata seedlings. Transcriptome analysis revealed a series of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including transcription factors such as MYB, ERF, WRKY, and some structural genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis. However, whole genome bisulfite sequencing (BS-seq) results showed little effect of the 5-azaC treatment on the alteration of DNA methylation on these genes, …

The Mechanism Of Sperm (Pro)Nuclear Migration In Plants And Animals, Yilin Zhang, Tomokazu Kawashima Jan 2024

The Mechanism Of Sperm (Pro)Nuclear Migration In Plants And Animals, Yilin Zhang, Tomokazu Kawashima

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Gamete nuclear migration is a critical process during fertilization in flowering plants, yet its molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Recent studies have highlighted the essential role of cytoskeletal elements, particularly F-actin, in directing sperm nuclear migration, contrasting with the microtubule-driven migration in animals. We summarize the process of sperm nuclear migration in plants and the involvement of Class XI myosin XI-G in Arabidopsis, along with the ROP8-SCAR2 pathway’s ARP2/3-independent mechanism for F-actin nucleation. We also provide a comparative overview of examples from sea urchins, C. elegans, mice and yeast contrasting these mechanisms with those in plants. Finally, we …

Differential Gene Expression Analysis: Genomic Response In Human Peripheral Blood Following Neutron Exposure For Radiation Biodosimetry Applications, Rashmi Basavaraj Jan 2024

Differential Gene Expression Analysis: Genomic Response In Human Peripheral Blood Following Neutron Exposure For Radiation Biodosimetry Applications, Rashmi Basavaraj

Open Access Dissertations

Radiation Biodosimetry is a crucial method for evaluating the biological consequences of radiation exposure on health outcomes. This technique estimates radiation dose by analyzing the biological effects it causes in the body becomes especially valuable in situations where traditional physical dosimeters, like badges, are unavailable or unreliable. In these scenarios, Radiation Biodosimetry enables accurate dose assessment, which is critical for making informed decisions during emergency response (triage), treatment planning, and long-term health risk evaluation.

Current biodosimetry methods struggle to accurately estimate radiation doses, especially for low-dose exposures or complex scenarios involving both neutrons and photons, like those arising from improvised …

Thermal And Electronic Properties Of Ni(110) Surface Using Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy, Lakshitha Dinusha Lathpandura Jan 2024

Thermal And Electronic Properties Of Ni(110) Surface Using Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy, Lakshitha Dinusha Lathpandura

Open Access Dissertations

I have used a k-resolved inverse photoemission spectrometer to measure the spectral line intensity attenuation with increasing temperature observed on the unoccupied electronic structure of Ni(110) along the azimuth. By employing the Debye-Waller model to the results of a transition into the sp-derived bulk state, I estimate the effective surface Debye temperature of Ni(110) to be 240 ± 20 K. A phonon-slab calculation based on density functional perturbation theory yields a Debye temperature of a bi-layer Ni(100) slab is 343 K. The experimental underestimate can be explained by the fact that the valence electrons involved in inverse photoemission …

Eddy-Topographic Interactions, Alexis Johnson Exley Jan 2024

Eddy-Topographic Interactions, Alexis Johnson Exley

Open Access Dissertations

Eddies are an integral component of the large-scale ocean circulation and climate system. They play a significant role in redistributing heat and energy around the globe, locally enhance primary productivity and aid in carbon sequestration. They primarily result from instability processes that modify large scale flow into smaller scale features, often facilitated by interactions with large topography. This dissertation is focused on these interactions, the dynamics that govern the generation and maintenance of mesoscale eddies and global implications for our climate system.

The role of topography in the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current Eddy (LCE) separation cycle is investigated in …

Cool red giant stars exhibit absorption bands of calcium monochloride (CaCl) in the optical region. In this work, the bands of CaCl corresponding to the A2Π − X2Σ+ transition with v′ ≤ 4 and v″ ≤ 4, and B2Σ+ − X2Σ+ transition with v′≤ 2 and v″ ≤ 2 are rotationally analyzed with PGOPHER, a multipurpose program for simulating and fitting molecular spectra. All bands were analyzed using high-resolution absorption spectra collected at the National Solar Observatory in 1985, calibrated with atomic lines from a high-resolution emission spectrum obtained …

Higher-Derivative Quantum Field Theory And Its Implications For Hawking Radiation And Nonlocality, Gordon Kanan Jan 2024

Higher-Derivative Quantum Field Theory And Its Implications For Hawking Radiation And Nonlocality, Gordon Kanan

Physics Dissertations - Archive

One of the fundamental equations of quantum field theory is the Klein-Gordon equation which can be constructed using irreducible representations of the Poincar ́e group and describes the dynamics of spin-0 matter. The higher derivative Klein- Gordon equations are also constructed using irreducible representations of the Poincar ́e group and are, thus, invariant under operations of this group. These higher derivative Klein-Gordon equations can be placed into two series depending on the power of the derivative, one for odd powers of the derivative and one for even powers, whose solu- tions yield timelike and spacelike fields. Applying these higher derivative …

Internalized Racism: A Theoretical Model, William Glen Fisher Jan 2024

Internalized Racism: A Theoretical Model, William Glen Fisher

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Internalized racism exists, we can observe and measure the effect it has on people. It manifests from both the psychological and sociological factors that form a person’s racial self-image. As Campón and Carter (2015) state: “less attention to date has been given to … how racial minority groups appropriate (i.e., take in) racial beliefs.” (p.498). In this dissertation, I explore how internalized racism forms. Further, I propose a new theoretical model integrating two concepts, the racialized self and racialized experiences. Racism is found at different levels, within the self through the racialized self, it highlights how People of Color view …

Welcome To The Fruit Farm: How Queer Farmers Are Shaping The Agroecology Of The Future, Alessandra Del Brocco Jan 2024

Welcome To The Fruit Farm: How Queer Farmers Are Shaping The Agroecology Of The Future, Alessandra Del Brocco

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

The question of sustainability has many different facets, but one of the most urgent issues is that of sustainable agriculture. Decades of agricultural policy demanded farmers go big or get out, more colloquially known as the government directive of the 20th century to farm “fencerow to fencerow”. In the 21st century, we now face a near-critical consolidation of farmland and decline in the overall number of farmers. If sustainability calls for a resilient, diversified agrisystem, how can we change direction at this point in the trajectory?

In this study, I demonstrate how queer farmers make valuable contributions to …

Reconciling With The State: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Perspectives Of Reconciliation Of Wrongfully Convicted Persons In Southern Nigeria, Chinyere Erica Chisom Jan 2024

Reconciling With The State: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Perspectives Of Reconciliation Of Wrongfully Convicted Persons In Southern Nigeria, Chinyere Erica Chisom

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Wrongfully convicted persons in Nigeria experience numerous harms and losses from their wrongful convictions and face various challenges after their exoneration and release from prison. These adverse effects occur on multiple levels of the wrongfully convicted persons’ relationships and impact these relationships in profound ways. Although legal remedies exist to deal with the aftermath of wrongful convictions in Nigeria, they are grossly inadequate. Reconciliation, an innovative, holistic, and restorative measure, is required to address the impact of these devastating experiences and repair the affected relationships. Grounded in the social contract, human needs, and restorative justice theories, this study employed a …

Investigating Hiv-1 Transmission To Human Cervix Using Reporter Virus Technologies, Dana Frances Indihar Jan 2024

Investigating Hiv-1 Transmission To Human Cervix Using Reporter Virus Technologies, Dana Frances Indihar

All ETDs from UAB

Around 39 million people globally are currently infected with Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1), more than half of whom are women. HIV-1 is a retrovirus that infects and depletes an individual’s immune cells, culminating in the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if not managed with anti-retroviral therapies (ART). Most women acquire HIV-1 through heterosexual intercourse. However, the early mechanisms and virologic determinants of HIV-1 transmission to women remain unclear. Herein, we demonstrate transmitted/founder (TF) HIV-1 representing two genetically and pathogenically distinct subtypes (A and D) in vivo have distinct replication phenotypes in an ex vivo cervical explant tissue (CET) …

House Of Horrors: Shirley Jackson And The Perils Of The Domestic In American Literature, 1945-1965, Annmarie Demichiel

Open Access Dissertations

Recent years have seen a slight rise in academic and popular interest in the works of author Shirley Jackson (1916-1965). Jackson’s novella The Haunting of Hill House (1959) was adapted into a Netflix series in 2018, while Ruth Franklin’s 2016 biography of Jackson brought previously unknown or overlooked details of Jackson’s life to the attention of scholars and general readers alike. Scholarly treatments of Jackson’s work are steadily increasing, and the focus of such treatments remains consistent and somewhat narrow: interpretations include attention to homosocial and possible homosexual relationships in Jackson’s fiction; her fiction’s placement in the lineage of gothic …

Drivers Of Phytoplankton Diversity And Primary Production Across Time And Space: Insights From The Northeast U.S. Shelf, Diana N. Fontaine Jan 2024

Drivers Of Phytoplankton Diversity And Primary Production Across Time And Space: Insights From The Northeast U.S. Shelf, Diana N. Fontaine

Open Access Dissertations

In the ocean, a group of drifting, photosynthetic cells called phytoplankton are vital to Earth’s carbon cycle. Through primary production, a process whereby phytoplankton remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it to organic carbon, these cells play a pivotal role in supporting marine food webs. Primary production is generated by numerous different types and sizes of phytoplankton; this myriad of phylogenetic diversity and large size range influences the fate of organic carbon in the global ocean. Due to their importance, phytoplankton community dynamics, including primary production and taxonomic diversity, are routinely studied. Much of this work, however, tends …

Investigation Of Electrolytes For Silicon-Containing Anodes And On High Voltage Cathodes In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Leah Rynearson Jan 2024

Investigation Of Electrolytes For Silicon-Containing Anodes And On High Voltage Cathodes In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Leah Rynearson

Open Access Dissertations

Lithium-ion batteries have become essential to modern day life as people are increasingly reliant on mobile technologies. One rapidly developing application is the use of lithium-ion batteries to make electric vehicles (EV) more feasible for consumers. However, in order to compete with the driving range of the commonly used combustible engine, batteries used in EV applications need to be further improved and optimized to give higher energy densities and increased capacity retention.

One way to improve energy density is to switch the anode material from the relatively low energy dense graphite to the much higher capacity silicon; however, the silicon-lithium …

The Effects Of Retirement Education, Priming And Presentation Order On Wealth Management Outcomes, Robert J. Glew Jan 2024

The Effects Of Retirement Education, Priming And Presentation Order On Wealth Management Outcomes, Robert J. Glew

Open Access Dissertations

Over the past two decades the burden of funding one’s retirement income has been shifting from employers to employees. As a result, many employees have found themselves without the necessary replacement income at retirement and either continue to work or adjust their lifestyle to meet their income level. The scope of the problem has been described as a national concern. One potential solution is to provide individuals with retirement education to assist them when making retirement planning decisions. A significant amount of academic research has been conducted in this area, however, several recent meta-analyses have concluded mixed results about the …

Advanced Deformation Modeling Constrained By Geodesy: Applications To Underground Nuclear Testing And Submarine Volcanoes, Sandra Slead Jan 2024

Advanced Deformation Modeling Constrained By Geodesy: Applications To Underground Nuclear Testing And Submarine Volcanoes, Sandra Slead

Open Access Dissertations

Geodetic techniques make it possible to observe crustal deformation associated with many subsurface processes, both natural and anthropogenic. When a perturbation occurs beneath the ground surface, such as magma injection into a magma chamber, detonation of a clandestine nuclear weapon, slip on a tectonic fault, or withdrawal of groundwater from an aquifer, the surrounding crust undergoes a deformation response that can be measured on the surface. Those measurements, combined with our understanding of the Earth's expected response, can be inverted through deformation modeling to reveal details about subsurface events that we often cannot directly observe. Insights gleaned from geodetic measurements …

Emerging Chromatin Regulators In Response To Heavy Metal Exposure, Wesley Saintilnord Jan 2024

Emerging Chromatin Regulators In Response To Heavy Metal Exposure, Wesley Saintilnord

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Environmental exposure to heavy metals poses significant threats to human health as they are associated with various developmental and chronic pathologies such as reproductive defects and cancers. Despite their profound risks, a comprehensive understanding of their disease-causing mechanisms is lacking. Most studies point to reactive oxygen species-induced DNA damage; however, their mutagenic potential is relatively weak suggesting the involvement of alternative mechanisms. One important, yet underexplored mechanism, is their ability to rewire the epigenome via DNA methylation and histone variant incorporation, leading to aberrant gene regulatory networks.

This study investigates the epigenetic mechanisms targeted by two ubiquitous heavy metals with …

Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Prosocial Responses In Intergroup Relations: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial, Denise Yiran Zheng Jan 2024

Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Prosocial Responses In Intergroup Relations: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial, Denise Yiran Zheng

Theses and Dissertations

Based on social identity theory and intergroup emotions theory, individuals feel for and act toward others based on their group-based social identities. Recent research shows that mindfulness can enhance prosocial responses toward others across group divides. The current research examined the effects of mindfulness training on prosocial behavior in intergroup relations where such behavior is difficult (e.g., with marginalized or devalued social groups). The study also examined potential mechanisms, namely state empathic concern and appraisal, that may explain how mindfulness increases prosocial behavior toward outgroups. This study compared the effects of a 2-week mindfulness training to a matched coping training …

Theses and Dissertations

We consider the symmetry algebra of the geodesic equations of the canonical
connection on a Lie groups. We mainly consider the solvable indecomposable four,
five and six-dimensional Lie algebras with co-dimension two abelian nilradical, that
have an abelian and not abelian complement. In this particular case, we have only
one algebra in dimension four namely; A4,12 , and three algebras in dimension five
namely; A5,33, A5,34, and A5,35 In dimension six, based on the list of Lie algebras in
Turkowski’s list, there are nineteen such algebras namely; A6,1- A6,19 that have an
abelian complement, and there are eight algebras that …

Advancing Clinical Bacterial Diagnosis: Gram-Stained Whole-Slide Image Classification With Attention-Based Deep Learning, Jack Mcmahon Jan 2024

Advancing Clinical Bacterial Diagnosis: Gram-Stained Whole-Slide Image Classification With Attention-Based Deep Learning, Jack Mcmahon

Computer Science Senior Theses

We introduce a new method for the classification of Gram-stained WSIs. As a test for the diagnosis of blood infections, Gram stains are highly relevant to informing patient treatment. Rapid analysis of Gram stains has been shown to be positively associated with better clinical outcomes, indicating the need for better tools to aid in automatic Gram stain analysis. To date, this area of research has been underexplored, with previous studies relying on the manual patch-level annotation of WSIs to generate training data. This is the first application of a transformer-based model to Gram-stain WSI classification, an approach that is far …

An Exploratory Study Of Ombuds As Agents Of Change: From Observation To Action, Michael A. Wahlgren Jan 2024

An Exploratory Study Of Ombuds As Agents Of Change: From Observation To Action, Michael A. Wahlgren

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on identifying successful approaches used by university ombuds offices to enact change regarding dispute resolution options within their academic institute. The field of Ombuds has grown steadily in North America since the 1970s and is widely used by private industry, academia, and government organizations to deploy alternative dispute resolution techniques, an often cheaper and more successful means of conflict resolution compared to the traditional litigious approach. Identifying how ombuds approach promoting change requires understanding the dispute resolution system and the conditions that produce conflict. Based on interviews with 10 current university ombuds officers from a variety of …
