On The Area-Averaged Effective Sound Absorption Coefficient Of Porous Materials Excited By A Monopole, Franck Sgard, Noureddine Atalla, Olivier Robin, Alain Berry
On The Area-Averaged Effective Sound Absorption Coefficient Of Porous Materials Excited By A Monopole, Franck Sgard, Noureddine Atalla, Olivier Robin, Alain Berry
Études primaires
The area-averaged effective sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of a rigid-backed homogeneous porous material subjected to a monopole excitation is calculated as the absorbed-to-incident sound power ratio. Using Allard's model to describe the sound propagation above the porous material, an analytical model for this power-based SAC is proposed and proves to give a good approximation of the sound absorption performance under monopole excitation of sufficiently large areas of material. The impact of factors on the power-based SAC, such as monopole height, material radial dimension used to calculate the sound powers, and material properties is discussed. The power-based SAC frequency-dependent behavior is …

Measurement Of The Local Static Mechanical Pressure Of Earplugs, Luiz G.C. Melo, Ahmed S. Dalaq, Franck Sgard, Olivier Doutres, Laurianne Legroux, Eric Wagnac
Measurement Of The Local Static Mechanical Pressure Of Earplugs, Luiz G.C. Melo, Ahmed S. Dalaq, Franck Sgard, Olivier Doutres, Laurianne Legroux, Eric Wagnac
Études primaires
Earplugs are used in various critical industrial sectors, such as construction, aviation, military and defense, transportation, and healthcare. However, they present inherent drawbacks, notably discomfort that can lead to inconsistent and incorrect use, thereby leaving a significant proportion of workers vulnerable to irreversible hearing damage, ranging from tinnitus to deafness. This discomfort is closely linked to a physical parameter known as static mechanical pressure (SMP), representing the pressure exerted by earplugs on the earcanal walls. Determining the SMP is crucial for developing earplugs that prioritize comfort. However, experimental studies in this area are scarce and there is no experimental set-up …

Disability Reduction Following A Lumbar Stabilization Exercise Program For Low Back Pain: Large Vs. Small Improvement Subgroup Analyses Of Physical And Psychological Variables, Christian Larivière, Richard Preuss, Marie-France Coutu, Michael J. Sullivan, Nicolas Roy, Sharon M. Henry
Études primaires
Background: Little is known about why patients with low back pain (LBP) respond differently to treatment, and more specifically, to a lumbar stabilization exercise program. As a first step toward answering this question, the present study evaluates how subgroups of patients who demonstrate large and small clinical improvements differ in terms of physical and psychological changes during treatment. Methods: Participants (n = 110) performed the exercise program (clinical sessions and home exercises) over eight weeks, with 100 retained at six-month follow-up. Physical measures (lumbar segmental instability, motor control impairments, range of motion, trunk muscle endurance and physical performance tests) were …
An Impedance Tube Technique For Estimating The Insertion Loss Of Earplugs, K. Carillo, O. Doutres, F. Sgard
An Impedance Tube Technique For Estimating The Insertion Loss Of Earplugs, K. Carillo, O. Doutres, F. Sgard
Études primaires
This paper proposes a quick and straightforward technique for estimating the insertion loss (IL) of earplugs measured on an acoustical test fixture (ATF) using a commercial impedance tube. In this method, the earplug's acoustic properties (i.e., its transmission loss and the reflection coefficient of its medial surface) are determined from its transfer matrix measured using the three-microphones impedance tube method modified here for the current application. The IL is then estimated using a one-dimensional analytical model of open and occluded earcanals based on the wavefield decomposition theory. The method is evaluated numerically and experimentally from 50 Hz to 6.5 kHz. …

Effect Of Personalized Spinal Profile On Its Biomechanical Response In An Emg-Assisted Optimization Musculoskeletal Model Of The Trunk, C. Larivière, A.H. Eskandari, H. M., F. Ghezelbash, D. Gagnon, A. Shirazi-Adl
Études primaires
Recent developments in musculoskeletal (MS) modeling have been geared towards model customization. Personalization of the spine profile could affect estimates of spinal loading and stability, particularly in the upright standing posture where large inter-subject variations in the lumbar lordosis have been reported. This study investigates the biomechanical consequences of changes in the spinal profile. In 31 participants (healthy and with back pain), (1) the spine external profile was measured, (2) submaximal contractions were recorded in a dynamometer to calibrate the EMG-driven MS model and finally (3) static lifting in the upright standing challenging spine stability while altering load position and …

Études primaires
Workers in the waste-processing industry are potentially exposed to high concentrations of biological contaminants, leading to respiratory and digestive problems and skin irritations. However, few data on the exposure of waste collection truck (WCT) drivers are available. The goal was to document the microbial risk of the waste collection truck (WCT) workers while in the vehicle cab. Long-period sampling using the truck air filters (CAF) and short time ambient air sampling in the cab were used. The potential release of microbial particles from CAFs was also investigated since it could contribute to the microbial load of the cabin air. A …
Estimation Of Acoustical Materials Sound Absorption Coefficient Under Oblique Incidence Plane Wave And Diffuse Field Via Allard Model Inversion, Magdeleine Sciard, Alain Berry, Franck Sgard, Thomas Dupont, Olivier Robin
Estimation Of Acoustical Materials Sound Absorption Coefficient Under Oblique Incidence Plane Wave And Diffuse Field Via Allard Model Inversion, Magdeleine Sciard, Alain Berry, Franck Sgard, Thomas Dupont, Olivier Robin
Études primaires
A technique for estimating the sound absorption of materials under oblique incidence plane wave and diffuse field excitations is proposed. It requires a mobile loudspeaker and a pair of fixed microphones above a layer of absorbing material. Starting from sound pressure measurements made above the material surface for multiple source positions and by inverting Allard’s propagation model, the proposed method allows for the identification of two effective (or equivalent) parameters, namely, the complex effective density and the complex wave number. Obtaining these parameters makes it possible to estimate the sound absorption coefficient for a plane wave with any angle of …
Impact Of The Ear Canal Motion On The Impedance Boundary Conditions In Models Of The Occlusion Effect, Simon Kersten, Franck Sgard, Michael Vorländer
Impact Of The Ear Canal Motion On The Impedance Boundary Conditions In Models Of The Occlusion Effect, Simon Kersten, Franck Sgard, Michael Vorländer
Études primaires
The occlusion effect (OE) denotes the increased low-frequency perception of bone-conducted sounds when the ear canal (EC) is occluded. Circuit and finite element (FE) models are commonly used to investigate the OE and improve its prediction, often applying acoustic impedances at the EC entrance and tympanic membrane (TM). This study investigates the sound generation caused by the structural motion of the EC. In addition to the EC wall vibration, it accounts for the motions of the EC entrance and TM, resulting from nondeforming motion of the surrounding structures. A model extension including these motions with the impedances is proposed. Related …

Reactive Hypotheticals In Legal Education: Leveraging Ai To Create Interactive Fact Patterns, Sean Steward
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Good legal hypotheticals require carefully constructed scenarios designed to mimic the challenges and dilemmas that students will face in their future legal careers. Hypotheticals help students take abstract concepts such as negligence or res ipsa loquitor and ground them in the reality that these rules were meant to control. Yet, despite our best efforts, creating hypotheticals with a rich tapestry of facts, personalities, and complexities that characterize real-world legal practice remains challenging and time-consuming. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can solve this problem. By leveraging emerging AI technology, legal educators can create richer, more realistic hypotheticals that react to students and keep …

Section 337 provides U.S, intellectual property rights owners unique and effective relief against infringing products imported into the United States. The USITC and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit have already taken steps to limit the ability of patent trolls to use Section 337 through tightening the domestic industry requirement. Efforts to address purported abuse will ultimately negatively impact those that Section 337 was expressly amended to protect. Amendments to Section 337, therefore, are unnecessary.

State V. Pardoned Individual, 2024-Ohio-2969 (12th Dist.) – Appellant’S Brief, Joann Sahl
Akron Law Faculty Publications
This appellate brief submitted to the Court Of Appeals Twelfth Appellate District Of Ohio argues that the trial court erred in denying the sealing of defendant's pardoned conviction. It contends that an unconditional pardon should entitle the recipient to have the conviction sealed, aligning with the rehabilitative intent of a pardon. The brief emphasizes that denying the sealing undermines the purpose of the pardon and continues to impose collateral consequences on the individual. The appellant seeks a reversal of the trial court's decision, advocating for the sealing of the pardoned conviction to fully restore his rights and reputation
