Understanding The Potential For A Hallyu “Backlash” In Southeast Asia: A Case Study Of Consumers In Thailand, Malaysia And Philippines, Mary J. Ainslie, Sarah Domingo Lipura, Joanne B. Y. Lim Dec 2024

Understanding The Potential For A Hallyu “Backlash” In Southeast Asia: A Case Study Of Consumers In Thailand, Malaysia And Philippines, Mary J. Ainslie, Sarah Domingo Lipura, Joanne B. Y. Lim

Kritika Kultura

Korean cultural products (known as Hallyu) are now the dominant incarnation of East Asian culture throughout Southeast Asia and have introduced consumers to Korean industry, cosmetics, and culture. Recent work has concentrated heavily upon this region and the new dynamics Southeast Asian countries can offer to the study of inter-Asian cultural links, particularly during the political amalgamation of the ASEAN economic community. Yet in the more developed Southeast Asian nations of Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, there is some evidence of a rejection of and animosity towards Hallyu products from consumers who are beginning to question and disapprove of the …

The Matrix Of S&M In Korean Cinema: Time, Space, Trauma, Power, Taeyun Yu Dec 2024

The Matrix Of S&M In Korean Cinema: Time, Space, Trauma, Power, Taeyun Yu

Kritika Kultura

Just as Jean Baudrillard predicted that a new era would arrive wherein sexual desire would emerge, the late ’90s in Korea were marked as the fin-de-siècle of sexual explosion in popular culture, in the transition of the culture from pre-modernism to modernism. Sex and nudity became prevalent properties in popular culture and film, as a window onto the world, also joined this parade by equipping its products with erotically provocative visuals and transgressive texts. This study aims to shed some light on the social meaning of sadomasochism (S&M) by viewing it as an expression of power relations (dominance/submission & discipline/punishment) …

Hallyu In And For Asia, Ju-Yong Ha

Kritika Kultura

Hallyu has persisted long enough to attain the stature of a major influential cultural phenomenon. Yet the primary locus of exchange appear to be discourses and dialogues produced by Koreans and Western appreciators. What this state of affairs overrides is the reality that the first area of impact of contemporary Korean popular culture is the region immediately outside Korea (and East Asia): the Southeast Asian region. In order to ensure that Koreans and Southeast Asians attain a condition of mutual understanding, scholarship on hallyu vis-à-vis its Asian audiences will have to be facilitated and encouraged.

The (Mis)Education Of The Filipino Writer: The Tiempo Age And Institutionalized Creative Writing In The Philippines, Conchitina Cruz

Kritika Kultura

According to Merlie Alunan, the writers Edilberto and Edith Tiempo, founders of the Silliman University National Writers Workshop, have so influenced Philippine literary production that the latter half of the twentieth century and “a few more decades hereafter” can be called “The Tiempo Age.” This essay examines the relationship of aesthetics and politics in institutionalized creative writing in the Philippines by unpacking the politics of the Silliman Workshop’s autonomous aesthetics. It situates the origins, pedagogy, and imagined community of the Silliman Workshop within the network of American colonial education in the Philippines, American cultural diplomacy, and institutionalized creative writing in …

Optimization Of The Starch Chitosan-Based Flocculant Crosslinked By Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate On Removing Dypro 19 Textile Dye From Wastewater, Asep Nurohmat Majalis, Putri Ramadhani, Hendris Hendarsyah Kurniawan, Axel Dimaz Sanusi Pasaribu, Hafiizh Prasetia, Fitri Yuliani, Andreas Andreas, Hartati Hartati

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Dyes used in industry, especially textile dyes, are one of the water pollutants that receive much attention because they are potentially toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and generally challenging to decompose naturally. Textile dyes from wastewater can be removed through coagulation-flocculation. However, conventional coagulation-flocculation based on Fe and Al salts and synthetic polymers often leaves residual pollution. In this research, the performance of the new biopolymer-based flocculant, namely starch-ethylene glycol dimetacrylate-chitosan (SEC), which can act as coagulants and flocculants in solid-liquid separation of textile dyes, has been optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The influences of several independent variables, such …

Breast Cancer Area Identification In Mammograms Using Expectation Maximization Gaussian Mixture Model, Rizki Khoirun Nisa, Dian Kurniasari, Favorisen R. Lumbanraja, Warsono Warsono

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Breast cancer accounts for 25% of all cancer diagnoses and 16% of cancer-related deaths among women globally, with high mortality rates due to late diagnosis. Early detection relies on imaging techniques such as mammography, histopathology, and breast ultrasound, with mammography being the gold standard due to its proven to detect breast cancer, thus it is effective for breast cancer treatment. However, mammogram images often produce noise and artefacts, complicating early-stage cancer detection and emphasizing the need for advanced image processing. Clustering algorithms such as K-means and Expectation Maximization - Gaussian Mixture Model (EM-GMM) have shown potential in image segmentation. This …

Rethinking Safe Nurse Staffing In The Post-Covid Icu: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nurse-To-Patient Ratio And Mixed Model Approach For State Policies, Emilie A. Maxie Dec 2024

Rethinking Safe Nurse Staffing In The Post-Covid Icu: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nurse-To-Patient Ratio And Mixed Model Approach For State Policies, Emilie A. Maxie

Dissertations

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) led to an unprecedented surge in ICU admission, increasing the nurse-to-patient ratios and intensifying stress on ICU nurses. This prompted many nurses to leave bedside care, exacerbating the ongoing nursing shortage and creating unsafe working conditions. Fourteen states have enacted safe nurse staffing policies. California implemented a mandated nurse-to-patient ratio, while Massachusetts adopted a mixed model for ICUs that involves a ratio, nurse committees, and workload tools. In post-COVID, this raises the question of which state policy approach is more effective in retaining ICU nursing staff. Literature suggests a mixed policy may be more effective.

Region-Based Cross-Component Prediction Parameter Derivation, Xiang Li, Debargha Mukherjee Dec 2024

Region-Based Cross-Component Prediction Parameter Derivation, Xiang Li, Debargha Mukherjee

Defensive Publications Series

Region-based cross-component prediction parameter derivation improves convolutional cross-component mode (CCCM) prediction by enabling filter coefficients for predicting chroma samples from luma samples to be derived for an entire region of a frame of a video stream, such as a coding tree unit (CTU), rather than requiring that such filter coefficients be derived for each individual coding unit (CU). Deriving the filter coefficients for an entire region instead of for each individual CU under processing significantly reduces the latency in video coding and thus enables CCCM prediction to be used in hardware coders. The filter coefficients for the region are derived …

Many embedded systems use an embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) as the main storage device for such systems. When the eMMC for an embedded system is connected to the host Central Processing Unit (CPU) through an intermediate device, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) bridge, recovery from a transient eMMC failure, such as a single-event upset (SEU), is not available and such a failure could bring down an entire network. For example, conventional recovery processes for a system that experiences such a transient failure due to an SEU issue typically involve performing a system power cycle, which can cause significant network …

Building Successful Justice Worker Programs: Emerging Insights From Research And Practice, Rebecca L. Sandefur, Matthew Burnett

Alaska Law Review

America's deep access to justice crisis has long seemed intractable. But new and potentially transformative models for giving people access to legal services and to their own law are emerging around the country. Among the most promising of these are community justice workers. These are people already trusted in their communities, such as social workers, librarians, health aides, community leaders, teachers, mediators, and everyday citizens who are trained to help people understand and act on the legal challenges involved in critical life issues. These issues implicate basic needs like nutrition, health, income security, shelter, education, and care of dependents, and …

Minimizing Infant Injury Risk By Utilizing Parental Education In A Primary Care Setting, Courtney Munroe, Erin Kuehl, Rachel Mahlberg

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing

Introduction

Accidental injury and death to infants has been correlated to lack of proper education to parents of infants in the primary pediatric care setting. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and unintentional injuries were the second and third leading causes of post neonatal death during this period of time (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Studies have found that motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of child injury and death for infants under 12 months of age. The CDC found that drowning, suffocation, and poisoning were other leading causes that contributed to child injury and death rates …

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging males, but its underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and its receptors (S1PRs) play important roles in various diseases, while less studied in prostate. Current study attempts to clarify the expression and functional activities of S1P/S1PRs in the prostate. We discovered that S1P/S1PRs were richly expressed in the prostate, with S1PR1/2/3 localized in the epithelial/stromal compartments, while S1PR4/5 were less expressed. In vitro, S1P/S1PR1/S1PR3 promoted cell proliferation via AKT and ERK1/2 pathways, S1P/S1PR2/S1PR3 enhanced contraction of WPMY-1 cells and human prostate via RhoA/ROCK pathway, while S1P/S1PR1/S1PR2/S1PR3 alleviated the inflammation …

Simulation Of Cascade Failure In Urban Rail Transit Hypernetworks Based On Hypergraph Theory, Zijin Han, Mingjun Qian, Xixian Wang, Kaiyue Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to enhance the resilience of urban rail transit networks to ensure stable operations and passenger safety in the face of emergencies, hypergraph theory is introduced to construct a hypergraph based urban rail transit hypernetwork model, and a nonlinear load-capacity cascading failure model based on passenger flow weighting is established. In response to the passenger evacuation process at actual transportation network stations, a load redistribution mechanism is proposed, taking into consideration both the network level and the importance of passenger flow. To address scenarios where stations in actual traffic networks can still accommodate loads during shutdowns, a node …

A Fast Federated Learning-Based Crypto-Aggregation Scheme And Its Simulation Analysis, Boshen Lü, Xiao Song

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To solve the problem of increased computation and communication costs caused by using homomorphic encryption (HE) to protect all gradients in traditional cryptographic aggregation (cryptoaggregation) schemes, a fast crypto-aggregation scheme called RandomCrypt was proposed. RandomCrypt performed clipping and quantization to fix the range of gradient values and then added two types of noise on the gradient for encryption and differential privacy (DP) protection. It conducted HE on noise keys to revise the precision loss caused by DP protection. RandomCrypt was implemented based on a FATE framework, and a hacking simulation experiment was conducted. The results show that the proposed …

Tidal wetlands can be a substantial sink of greenhouse gases, which can be offset by variable methane (CH4) emissions under certain environmental conditions and anthropogenic interventions. Land managers and policymakers need maps of tidal wetland CH4 properties to make restoration decisions and inventory greenhouse gases. However, there is a mismatch in spatial scale between point-based sampling of porewater CH4 concentration and its predictors, and the coarser resolution mapping products used to upscale these data. We sampled porewater CH4 concentrations, salinity, sulfate (SO42−), ammonium (NH4+), and total Fe using a spatially stratified sampling at 27 tidal wetlands …
