Evidence has indicated that Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs have lowered the age of identifying permanent hearing loss (PHL) in childhood, a first step to intervention. However, limited research has compared the age of diagnosis before and after implementation in one jurisdiction across the full range of PHL.

Methods: Children diagnosed with PHL in Ottawa, Canada were identified from the Child Hearing Lab database at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and linked to Ontario health administrative data. Background: The knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals, particularly gynaecologists, significantly impact the success of newborn hearing screening (NHS) programs. Aim: Aim of the study was to explore knowledge and attitudes related to NHS among gynaecologists and factors related to it. Method: It was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved the development of the awareness material and questionnaires assessing knowledge & attitude about NHS during the pre & post-awareness sessions. In the second phase, 45 gynaecologists filled out the questionnaire after attending the awareness session on NHS. Results and Conclusion: The gynaecologists displayed low to moderate awareness of …

Improving Newborn Hearing Screening For Community Births: Update From The Michigan Midwives Newborn Hearing Screening Program, Shannon B. Palmer, Nan Asher, Gina Cooper

Objectives. To determine the effectiveness of a hearing screening training program for midwives who attend community births.

Methods. The data for this study was obtained from the mandatory reporting data to the Michigan Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (MI EHDI). Data included the total births and screening rates of babies born at home or in a birthing center in Michigan in the years 2020 and 2021. There were 90 birth attendants who oversaw 2711 community births across the two study years.

The aim of this study was to increase understanding of what is considered key information for entry-level speech-language pathologists (SLPs) serving children who are DHH. Specifically, this study explored skills and strategies that could be integrated into SLP graduate curriculum to increase entry-level provider confidence and knowledge. Background: Previous position statements by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing have recommended the presence of hyperbilirubinemia requiring exchange transfusion as a risk factor for childhood hearing loss. This article examines the strength of the evidence to support this recommendation.

Methods: A PubMed® query using the keywords hyperbilirubinemia and hearing loss identified 77 original papers. All abstracts were reviewed for consideration of full article review and 44 articles were reviewed for consideration of inclusion and grading with 21 articles graded using structured evidence-grading forms. Nineteen articles were included to provide supporting rationale for recommendations. Evidence grading was completed by recommendation. …

In the attempt toward a preliminary dalumat (deconstruction) of bayan, critical is the bordering of bayan and its associated words. Adapting from its metonymic topography as an archipelago, the particular time of the Philippine bayan is essayed through simultaneous bordering of Filipino as a language and as a name assembling various languages. Metonymic association becomes significant through this in order for an event of a semblance of a semblance of a whole: a dalumat of bayan.

Charlson Ong’s award-winning novel An Embarrassment of Riches (2000) creatively narrates the history of the Chinese diaspora as an overdetermined event in the Southeast Asian Region. The novel explores the politics of belonging, displacement, identity, and territory through a/n (re)imagined nation built primarily on Philippine historical and cultural contingencies. This essay seeks to explore the junctures and vicissitudes of the Chinese diaspora in the region through the following questions: How is hybridity manifested by selected characters and other cultural elements in the narrative? AVEX, a Japanese leading entertainment company, decided to withdraw from the Chinese market in 2013 due to its business failure. In contrast, SM Entertainment adapted to the Chinese market and has survived. Organizations are affected by their external environment and implement strategies to adapt and respond to this environment. This study investigates reasons for SM Entertainment’s successful entry into China. We analyze how the corporation’s strategies evolved to acclimatize to changes in the Chinese cultural industry policy from 1998 to 2014, and explored the results of these strategies.
