Perona-Malik Diffusion-Driven Regularization For Image Resolution Enhancement In Electrical Capacitance Tomography, Nassor Ally
Perona-Malik Diffusion-Driven Regularization For Image Resolution Enhancement In Electrical Capacitance Tomography, Nassor Ally
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is a non-invasive promising method for monitoring industrial processes, such as oil-gas flow in pipelines and solid-gas flow in pneumatic systems. Despite its potential benefits, ECT generates poor-quality images, often used only for qualitative analysis. A non-linear relationship between measured capacitances and permittivity distribution and the ill-posedness of the sensitivity matrix elements causes this limitation. This hinders the applicability of ECT in monitoring online industrial process applications. This work proposes a reconstruction method based on a nonlinear diffusion function to generate high-quality images from the measured capacitance data from the ECT system. The diffusion regularization functional …

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations
Approximately one quarter of the earth's population directly harvests natural resources to meet their daily needs. These individuals are disproportionately required to alter their behaviors in response to increasing climatic variability and global biodiversity loss. Much of the ever-ambitious global conservation agenda relies on the voluntary uptake of conservation behaviors in such populations. Thus, it is critical to understand how such individuals perceive environmental change and use conservation practices as a tool to protect their well-being. We developed a participatory mapping activity to elicit spatially explicit perceptions of forest change and its drivers across 43 mangrove-dependent communities in Pemba, Tanzania. …

Prevalent Chronic Infections Modulate T-Cell Phenotypes And Functions Enhancing Hiv Susceptibility, Dissemination, And Persistence In African Population, Thomas F. Marandu, Mkunde S. Chachage
Tanzania Journal of Science
While many studies have associated HIV prevalence with socio-economic status, few have explored the host's immunity status prior to HIV infection. High HIV prevalence in Africa may in part be contributed by a high prevalence of other persistent infections that modulate the host immunity towards phenotypes that promote HIV acquisition. In this narrative review, we examined how four most prevalent pathogens in Africa (human papillomavirus, herpesviruses, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and helminth infections) modulate immunity to favor their survival and in turn, also influence HIV acquisition. We have described how these pathogens expand the number of memory and activated T cells, increase …

Thermal Behavior Of Bio-Fibers Reinforced Paving Bricks, John K. Makunza
Thermal Behavior Of Bio-Fibers Reinforced Paving Bricks, John K. Makunza
Tanzania Journal of Science
Paved areas are among sources of ambient temperature rise due to heat radiation that has been absorbed by pavement materials and then released into the air. The materials that are widely used in paving grounds include concrete, asphalt concrete and cement sand bricks. The paved surfaces absorb the incoming solar radiation from the sun, which is converted into heat, resulting into higher surface temperature than the ambient air temperature, thus contributing to the global warming. In an attempt to solve this problem, a study on paving bricks reinforced with bio-fibers has been done aiming at establishing the thermal behavior of …
