Stemming The Flow: Strategies To Address The Production Arts Skills Shortage Within Australian Theatre And Performance Practice, Tessa Rixon, Anthony Brumpton Oct 2024

Stemming The Flow: Strategies To Address The Production Arts Skills Shortage Within Australian Theatre And Performance Practice, Tessa Rixon, Anthony Brumpton

Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice

The lockdown, cancellations, and uncertainties of COVID-19 triggered a large-scale exit of skilled professional technicians, managers, and designers from the Australian arts industry. A significant gap in the national workforce of production artists has since emerged, forcing arts organisations to work with smaller teams and employ younger people with little to no training or knowledge. These pressures are beginning to impact the industry’s ability to meet the post-COVID demand to stage live performances, yet little information has been collected to fully comprehend the issue or to suggest solutions.

Conducted throughout 2023, this research sought to understand the current situation of …

Art And Climate : A Creative Awareness, Michel Abou Khalil Oct 2024

Art And Climate : A Creative Awareness, Michel Abou Khalil

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

The growing engagement of artists with ecological challenges is a significant trend in the Anthropocene era. Most often, some of them feel driven by a sense of responsibility regarding the impact of industry and consumer society on the environment. Their commitment becomes a form of activism, mobilization or even a simple commercial niche to exploit. By observing this enthusiasm in the art world for environmental issues, we can ask ourselves the following questions: despite their sometimes lack of in-depth knowledge, where does the role of artists begin and end in this complex universe? Does their commitment have real power to …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

The Ice Company, a dystopian novel, is the first volume of a 64-volume saga which met with great success among readers. It was adapted into a comic strip by the JOTIM group and also into a television series. On an earth invaded by ice, the survival of the human species is ensured by the large railway companies which share the globe. They provide warmth and food, but also exercise a ruthless dictatorship. Involuntarily involved in the intrigues of the Company, the glaciologist Lien Rag rebels against the power of the Company and the ostracism suffered by the Red Men, a …

World Without End: The Alliance Of Science, Fiction, And Images In Warning Of Global Warming, Soumaya Al Jarrah

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

Our planet is currently experiencing a climate crisis due to global warming. Scientists have begun to sound the alarm about this phenomenon, which will have disastrous consequences at every level. Literature is also affected by this phenomenon. As a result, we are witnessing an influx of literary works of all kinds with the aim of warning people of the dangers of this phenomenon and explaining its causes and impacts. And comics are no exception. In a hugely successful comic book, not only in France but worldwide, comic book artist Christophe Blain teams up with engineer Jean-Marc Jancovici to create Le …

Designing Adaptive Facades Using Biomimicry For Improving Daylighting In Office Building: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Hosam Abd El-Aziz Amr, Nada Essam

Journal of Engineering Research

The paper explores the use of biomimicry to enhance façade design and improve daylighting performance in office buildings in Cairo, Egypt. By emulating natural processes, adaptive facades were developed to increase energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Initial studies examined biomimicry principles and international case studies of adaptive facades. Simulations of a façade inspired by the Gazania flower's nyctinasty movement showed significant improvements: the area achieving optimal illuminance (300-3000 lux) increased from 24.2% to 37.4%, and Spatial Daylight Autonomy (SDA) has decreased from 82% to 68%. These findings demonstrate biomimicry's effectiveness in addressing daylighting challenges in hot climates. The research underscores …

The Devil In The Machine: The Doctor Travels Through Time In Chris Bush’S Faustus: That Damned Woman, Verna Foster

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Chris Bush’s Faustus: That Damned Woman (first performed in 2020) is a feminist and contemporary adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. The magus is a woman who travels through time from the seventeenth century to the far distant future. In the process, Johanna Faustus becomes a brilliant scientist who attempts to create digital immortality by uploading the minds of billions of human beings to the Cloud. When a power failure destroys almost all of humanity, it is uncertain whether the universal outage is caused by Mephistopheles (in accordance with the expectations of Faustian fantasy) or is simply an unforeseen but …

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

This article tells the story of a long-term (12-year-old) and ongoing participatory community action research in homeless shelters – the Behavioral Activation Research Project in Homeless Shelters (the project), which represents a long-term collaboration between Roger N. Reeb, PhD (Professor of Psychology) and St. Vincent de Paul (Dayton, Ohio). The first section of this article provides a grand overall description of the project, summarizes past research, and explains how we sustained the project during the COVID-19 pandemic. To demonstrate the project’s ongoing nature, the second section reports an honors thesis completed within the context of the project, accompanied by a …
