This project seeks to understand how American popular culture and Hollywood films represented American soldiers and veterans in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. war in Vietnam. America welcomed home its veterans in prior wars like WWII, but the U.S.'s war in Vietnam was different. Many Vietnam veterans were emotionally damaged and shunned from society because of the unpopularity of the war itself. Whether right or wrong, popular culture exposed this indifference. Augmented reality (AR) has emerged as a cutting-edge technology widely employed in various domains to enhance user experiences. However, despite its popularity, limited research has been conducted on the user experience of AR heritage apps within the context of the experience economy framework. When watching concert dance, observers unconsciously process movement information by forming reflections of their own experiences, resulting in an emotional connection. The artist, however, also has a part in forming meaning around something they create. If meaning is formed in the creation of the work by the artist, and also through observation by an audience, where does meaning reside? The relationship shared between the artist and their audience is valuable, so something must connect these two groups. This thesis serves as a lineage of research exploring the relationship between dance and design, emphasizing and encouraging interdisciplinary design processes that are cyclic and iterative. As the push for diversity, equity, and inclusion rises in the design field, experimentation in other disciplines and their relationship with design promotes more thoughtful, human-centered spaces. The overlaps of design and dance highlight the relationship of body and space through circulation patterns, ergonomic design, public performance, and site-specific work. Nontraditional performance (anything that is not in a typical proscenium viewing) allows a fostering, mutualistic relationship between performer, audience, and the environment.

The Man from Figueras

Chris Burnside is an artist/choreographer who was inspired to tell stories on stage after seeing performance artist Spalding Gray at an international theater festival in the early 1980s. After retirement and with the encouragement of a lifelong friend, Mr. Burnside started writing some of those stories down, eventually including others. The stories in The Man from Figueras focus on learning experiences, aha moments, and events that have, over the years, changed his perspective and shaped how he has lived his life. The ninety stories are in chronological order and are grouped by the eight decades of his life.

"Hip-hop music dominates popular culture and fuels the global entertainment industry, from music to dance, film, advertising, television, social media, and the internet.8 Hip-hop music, also known as rap, is an art form created by African American artists, but largely controlled through distribution and intellectual property ('IP') transfers by majority white-led corporations.9 From its inception, hip-hop presented a challenge to prevailing theories and doctrines of intellectual property, especially copyright law. Today, the gauntlet of rules regarding who is an IP owner, what is and is not protected, and the law’s bias toward the sophisticated continues to burden hip-hop artists."

The Article explores the potential use of Minecraft for experiential learning in higher education. In theory and in practice, intellectual property (IP) questions increasingly arise around if or how digital art can be owned, shared, and reused, as well as how digital realities interact with the various legal regimes. In its sandbox environment, Minecraft allows players to explore these questions through collective co-creation and creative decision-making pertaining to the subsequent re-use of their digital creations. Speech used to intentionally mislead others to gain a tangible benefit while causing harm to the one deceived or to others is generally labeled “fraud.” This term is used in both legal and nonlegal contexts. Where speech used to defraud satisfies the elements of a tort or a crime, it becomes “actionable fraud.” Categories of actionable fraud include common law deceit, securities fraud, and wire fraud. But taken together, these laws address harmful dishonesty in an inconsistent manner. While they broadly prohibit deceiving individual victims, they often allow deceiving the public at large. Recently, the Marquette Law Review published Armed and Under the Influence: The Second Amendment and the Intoxicant Rule After Bruen by Professor F. Lee Francis. In that article, Professor Francis provocatively argues that the Second Amendment protects the right of intoxicated people to carry guns in public. Francis argues that, under the history-focused framework for deciding Second Amendment cases laid out by the Supreme Court in Bruen, there is an insufficient historical tradition to support prohibiting intoxicated people from carrying arms in public. This study draws on empirical data to fine-tune the theoretical concept, ‘bridging civic identity’, which we propose as an educational aim in conflict-affected settings. We analyse interview data from Liberian respondents and North Korean migrants living in South Korea, using a conceptual framework based on the notions of ‘bridge citizens’ and agency. The analysis reveals the following: (1) that a high sense of agency is related to resourcefulness and fortitude, (2) that identifying oneself as a ‘bridge citizen’ is connected to recognising others as such, and (3) that concrete, large-scale aspirations of social justice for the larger community – and …

The purpose of this paper is to interpret how absurdity can be ironic through dress and appearance. By using two popular culture examples, one contemporary and one from the 1990’s, I look at how existential philosophies impact comparisons to society and how their reactions of dress and appearance can be ironic. This paper discusses Lee Alexander McQueen and Austin Babbitt (AssPizza) to find the intersection of irony, absurdism, social comparison, and dress and appearance. These two examples prove irony can be interpreted through an understanding of existentialism and how one views society and if they draw comparisons to their peers. …

Discovering Previously Overlooked Sets Of Piano Compositions In 24 Major And Minor Keys By Four Russian Composers At The Turn Of The 20th Century, Eri Nakagawa

At the turn of the 20th century, Russian composers Felix Blumenfeld, Anton Arensky, César Cui, and Reinhold Glière crafted sets of piano character pieces, notably the 24 Preludes op. 17 (1892), 24 Morceaux caractéristiques op. 36 (1894), 25 Préludes op. 64 (1903), and 25 Preludes op. 30 (published in 1906 - 1908), respectively. Blumenfeld mirrors the tonal organization of Chopin’s 24 Preludes, op. 28, while Arensky and Glière draw inspiration from Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. Cui innovatively differs from Chopin’s scheme by sequencing minor key works before relative major ones. Both Cui and Glière’s sets encompass 25 preludes, …
