An Exploration Of Adult Children’S Attachment To Their Parents Across Two Cultural Groups: Indians In India And Indians Who Immigrated To The United States, Vilasini Meenakshi Arun Aug 2024

An Exploration Of Adult Children’S Attachment To Their Parents Across Two Cultural Groups: Indians In India And Indians Who Immigrated To The United States, Vilasini Meenakshi Arun

Doctoral Dissertations

Typically, attachment theory has been studied and explored with western populations. Individuals seeking mental health treatment within the United States include western and nonwestern cultural groups and research, theories and interventions that apply to diverse populations are necessary. Attachment relationships are often a part of, or reasons for clients to seek therapy either overtly or covertly, thus allowing research on attachment to better inform treatment plans and practice. An attachment relationship between a parent and child can be influenced by several factors and may change over the course of development, but little is known about this process among Indians …

Killers That Once Were Humans: Reading The Role Of Modern Law Via Instrumental Rationality, Momen Abdelbari Hassan Aug 2024

Killers That Once Were Humans: Reading The Role Of Modern Law Via Instrumental Rationality, Momen Abdelbari Hassan

Theses and Dissertations

For Max Weber, the process of modernization is the process of rationalization in which it includes every realm in our modern life, such as the economy, science, organization, education, and law. However, this kind of rationalization has created coercive and inhumane conditions because rationalization has converted to being instrumental (value-free) without regard to any transcendental or moral values. The inhumane paradigm has become the only fate of our world. The vision needs rational domination to be achieved through formal rational law. Modern law, along with bureaucratization, has paved the road to rational political domination. This kind of domination captures human …

Evaluating The Client Base And Housing Outcomes Of A Community Based Organization Serving Unhoused Adults, Emi Caprio Aug 2024

Evaluating The Client Base And Housing Outcomes Of A Community Based Organization Serving Unhoused Adults, Emi Caprio

Doctoral Dissertations

There is a well-documented, bidirectional relationship between mental health and housing instability. When coupled with the complex historical, societal, and political factors contributing to houselessness, the result is a unique set of mental health needs within this community. Despite this, there is a low rate of mental health service utilization and a dearth of research on how to tailor services to meet the needs of unhoused individuals. Additionally, first-hand perspectives are often omitted, as this population is seen as “hard to reach”. The goal of this two-phase mixed-methods program evaluation was to better understand the demographic and mental health profiles …

"If The Gyil Has Died, Dagara Itself Has Died": On The Relationship Of Dagara Music, Food, And Costume, Gordon Cortney Aug 2024

"If The Gyil Has Died, Dagara Itself Has Died": On The Relationship Of Dagara Music, Food, And Costume, Gordon Cortney

Honors College Undergraduate Theses

The Dagara people, located primarily in the Upper West region of Ghana, take pride in their careful preservation of traditional customs, amidst years of brutal colonization and ethnocide. Previous ethnomusicological research has recognized the gyil, a Ghanaian xylophone, as the focal point of Dagara society, noting how it interacts with and is inherent in all aspects of their culture. Recent developments to the gyil’s design, practice, and performance have created concern for a lost or dying culture among the Dagara. If the gyil is experiencing change, then so too is the rest of Dagara culture. In June and July 2022, …

A Comparison Study Of Vocational Factors Influencing Academic Satisfaction For Marginalized And Majority Students, Sara Driver Aug 2024

A Comparison Study Of Vocational Factors Influencing Academic Satisfaction For Marginalized And Majority Students, Sara Driver

Dissertations

Marginalized college students experience increased rates of discrimination resulting in poorer academic outcomes whereas majority students are often afforded more privilege and access to resources allowing them to be more successful (Bardhardt et al., 2017; Milkman et al., 2015; Hanson, 2021). Psychology of Working Theory (PWT; Duffy et al., 2016) posits that experiences of discrimination and marginalization can negatively impact the chances for one to be successful in the world of work. PWT argues that decent work is a desired outcome by marginalized individuals and research confirms that securing future decent work is important to marginalized college students (Ma et …

A thematic analysis framework was utilized. A total of six themes and six subthemes emerged from this study and included: (1) comparisons, (2) stigma, (3) resilience, (4) support for services, (5) …

Social Domination And The Class Structure: Extending Left-Republicanism, Michael A. Hettinger Ii Aug 2024

Social Domination And The Class Structure: Extending Left-Republicanism, Michael A. Hettinger Ii

Philosophy Theses

There is a debate in republican political philosophy concerning whether, and under what circumstances, workers are dominated. Philosophers such as Pettit, Anderson, Gourevitch, and Vrousalis argue that employers dominate workers, either in extreme circumstances or as a necessity under capitalism. Some, such as Vrousalis, argue the domination of workers is a structural feature of capitalism. Others, such as Pettit, argue workplace domination is an extreme to protect against. I argue that capitalism requires the vulnerability of workers as a class to domination. Republicans who view workplace domination as an extreme fail to account for the structural cause of that domination. …

Evaluation Of Mechanical Vapor Recompression And Easy Multi-Effect Desalination Systems In Different Climate Conditions-Sensitivity And 7e Analysis, Hamed Kariman, Mehdi Khiadani, Siamak Hoseinzadeh, Shahin Shoeibi, Abdellah Shafieian

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Evaporative desalination systems, such as Multi-Effect Desalination (MED) and Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR), play important roles in addressing this challenge. Although large-scale desalination systems possess limitations in catering to the water demands of remote regions and islands and entail the cost of water transportation to residential areas, it is imperative to concentrate on studying the feasibility of employing centralized evaporative water production systems. Firstly, in this study, the initial focus is on conducting energy and exergy analyses of MVR and Easy MED systems, with a goal of enhancing knowledge about the energy consumption, exergy destruction and exergetic efficiency of these …

Nucleic acid-sensing Toll-like receptors (TLR) 3, 7/8, and 9 are key innate immune sensors whose activities must be tightly regulated to prevent systemic autoimmune or autoinflammatory disease or virus-associated immunopathology. Here, we report a systematic scanning-alanine mutagenesis screen of all cytosolic and luminal residues of the TLR chaperone protein UNC93B1, which identified both negative and positive regulatory regions affecting TLR3, TLR7, and TLR9 responses. We subsequently identified two families harboring heterozygous coding mutations in UNC93B1, UNC93B1+/T93I and UNC93B1+/R336C, both in key negative regulatory regions identified in our screen. These patients presented with cutaneous tumid lupus and juvenile idiopathic arthritis plus …

Germline gain-of-function (GOF) variants in STAT3 cause an inborn error of immunity associated with early-onset poly-autoimmunity and immune dysregulation. To study tissue-specific immune dysregulation, we used a mouse model carrying a missense variant (p.G421R) that causes human disease. We observed spontaneous and imiquimod (IMQ)-induced skin inflammation associated with cell-intrinsic local Th17 responses in STAT3 GOF mice. CD4+ T cells were sufficient to drive skin inflammation and showed increased Il22 expression in expanded clones. Certain aspects of disease, including increased epidermal thickness, also required the presence of STAT3 GOF in epithelial cells. Treatment with a JAK inhibitor improved skin disease without …

Connecting Representations And Ways Of Thinking About Slope From Algebra To Calculus, Deborah Moore-Russo, Courtney Nagle Aug 2024

Connecting Representations And Ways Of Thinking About Slope From Algebra To Calculus, Deborah Moore-Russo, Courtney Nagle

The Mathematics Enthusiast

While slope is a topic in the algebra curriculum, having a robust understanding of slope is needed for students to truly understand several single and multivariable calculus topics with any depth. We begin with a review of the topic of slope and present what is known from its existing corpus of literature. We then outline the tenets of APOS theory. Building from there, we suggest what a robust, flexible understanding of slope involves, as well as how slope is used, with the APOS-slope framework acting as a theoretical lens. This is followed by the cases of two hypothetical students built …

An Analytical Framework For Making Sense Of Students’ Graphical Representations With Attention To Frames Of Reference And Coordinate Systems, Hwa Young Lee Aug 2024

An Analytical Framework For Making Sense Of Students’ Graphical Representations With Attention To Frames Of Reference And Coordinate Systems, Hwa Young Lee

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Graph literacy, the ability to interpret and create graphical representations, is an important skill for students to learn mathematics and to succeed in STEM coursework and careers. Additionally, with the rapid development of technological devices and media, students are encountering increasingly more situations in which graph literacy is needed to make sense of and respond to information. In this paper, I present a conceptual analysis of what I consider the three layers constituting a graphical representation: frames of reference, coordinate system, and graph. Relatedly, I synthesize relevant literature and propose an analytical framework that could be used to make sense …

Fostering Students’ Development Of Productive Representation Systems For Infinite Series, Derek Eckman, Kyeong Hah Roh Aug 2024

Fostering Students’ Development Of Productive Representation Systems For Infinite Series, Derek Eckman, Kyeong Hah Roh

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Students’ development of reasoning through algebraic symbols is a crucial component of most mathematics courses. This paper reports the journey of one second-semester calculus student, Cedric, as he attempted to reason about and create algebraic representations for arbitrary partial sums and infinite series through two exploratory teaching interviews. We report Cedric’s symbolizing activity in terms of Eckman's (2023) expression framework, focusing on Cedric’s development and attribution of meaning to a personal expression template for denoting partial sums and series. Specifically, we describe how Cedric leveraged his initial meanings for partial sums to create personal expressions to reason about infinite series. …

Understanding Point And Slope In Linear Equations And Approximations: A Case Study, Kyunghee Moon Aug 2024

Understanding Point And Slope In Linear Equations And Approximations: A Case Study, Kyunghee Moon

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article delves into an intervention designed to enhance a precalculus student’s understanding in constructing linear equations and in approximating function values. Before the intervention, the student primarily relied on the algebraic formula y2-y1/x2-x1 to determine slope, knew slope geometrically as Δyx solely for integer values, and struggled to construct a linear equation without an explicitly shown y-intercept. Through the intervention, the student comprehended slope m as a unit rate and expanded this understanding to Δy = 𝑚Δ𝑥 for integer Δx by iterating m, Δ𝑥 number of times. She …

Expressing Distance In Graphs Of Functions In The Cartesian Plane: Obstacles And Interventions, Erika David Parr, Samuel Lippe Aug 2024

Expressing Distance In Graphs Of Functions In The Cartesian Plane: Obstacles And Interventions, Erika David Parr, Samuel Lippe

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Connecting algebraic and graphical representations encompasses a large portion of mathematical activity for students in grades 8-14. In Calculus, the ability to represent distances on graphs using algebraic expressions is foundational for a wide range of results. However, research has shown that students may struggle to make such connections. In this article, we seek to answer the following questions: (1) What are the underlying conceptions critical to expressing distances on graphs of functions algebraically? and (2) What types of tasks may support students in developing this skill? We first offer a conceptual analysis of the connections between algebraic expressions and …

On Weak Solutions And The Navier-Stokes Equations, Aryan Prabhudesai Aug 2024

On Weak Solutions And The Navier-Stokes Equations, Aryan Prabhudesai

Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this paper, I will discuss a partial differential equation that has solutions that are discontinuous. This example motivates the need for distribution theory, which will provide an interpretation of what it means for a discontinuous function to be a “solution” to a PDE. Then I will give a detailed foundation of distributions, including the definition of the derivative of a distribution. Then I will introduce and give background on the Navier-Stokes equations. Following that, I will explain the Millennium Problem concerning global regularity for the Navier-Stokes equations and share mathematical results regarding weak solutions. Finally, I will go over …

On Essentially Intentional Actions, Armand Babakhanian Aug 2024

On Essentially Intentional Actions, Armand Babakhanian

Philosophy Theses

Essentially intentional actions are kinds of action that can only be done intentionally. Essentialism is the view that essentially intentional actions exist. Accidentalism is the view that essentialism is false. In my thesis, I develop and argue for naïve essentialism, a species of essentialism based on Michael Thompson’s naïve action theory. First, I present key features of naïve action theory and the broader Anscombean tradition, distinguish between essentially and accidentally intentional actions, and provide an argument for the existence of essentially intentional actions. Second, I respond to three objections to my argument. Third, I argue that accidentalism is a …

Ethics Of Acceptance And Its Rational Dynamics, Yun-Cheng Wang Aug 2024

Ethics Of Acceptance And Its Rational Dynamics, Yun-Cheng Wang

Philosophy Theses

The objective of this work is to try to carve out the rational dynamics of the attitude of acceptance. Building on Laura Soter’s work on acceptance, which advocates that moralists of belief should moralize acceptance instead of belief, I motivate the needs of evidential norms that govern acceptance, and propose a theory sketch about what evidential norms of acceptance there are. I design a series of cases in which the agent fails to meet the moral aim by not paying due respect to evidence, and draw different evidential norms from these cases.

The Public And The Private Good: Plato On The Happiness Of The Citizens In The Republic, Lucas Heimgartner Aug 2024

The Public And The Private Good: Plato On The Happiness Of The Citizens In The Republic, Lucas Heimgartner

Philosophy Theses

In Book IV of the Republic Adeimantus raises a concern to Socrates that the guardians seem quite unhappy. If true, this charge threatens one of the central aims of the Republic: to show it is better for you to be just rather than unjust. Socrates offers a response, but ow to interpret this response is a matter of some debate. I argue that we ought to interpret his response as implying that Kallipolis’ citizens will be happy, but that they will be happy as citizens whose private interests are mediated by the public interest of the city. This account, …

Inference And Interpretation: Problems For Narrative As Testimony, Victoria Isett Aug 2024

Inference And Interpretation: Problems For Narrative As Testimony, Victoria Isett

Philosophy Theses

In this thesis, I argue that when an agent uses a narrative (i.e., a story) to communicate something to her hearer, she cannot be said to be giving testimony as it is traditionally understood in the literature in epistemology. Instead, many of the beliefs the hearer takes up on the basis of the speaker’s story will be derived by inferences and interpretations she must make on her own. If the authorship of the relevant beliefs does not belong to the speaker, then those beliefs are not ones transmitted via testimony. Thus, narratives are not forms of genuine testimony. However, I …

What’S Wrong With Suicide?: Our Passional Natures And The Question Of Rationality, Christian A. Sandoval Aug 2024

What’S Wrong With Suicide?: Our Passional Natures And The Question Of Rationality, Christian A. Sandoval

Philosophy Theses

According to many philosophers, the decision to commit suicide is irrational as a response to grief and hardship because the suicidal individual fails to properly appreciate the value of the future. The suicide, in her fixation on her interest in ending her current suffering, fails to consider the interest she has in the future. In this paper, I consider two views of suicide, one by Michael Cholbi and another by Richard Brandt, that argue that suicide is rational only insofar as the suicidal agent is able to appraise the value of her future. However, I argue that the epistemic standards …

Advertising The West: The History Of La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros, Monique Davila Aug 2024

Advertising The West: The History Of La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros, Monique Davila

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

In February 1925, Tucson celebrated the first La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros with a three-day rodeo that ended with a huge parade through the city center. Created by Philadelphia-born and new resident of Tucson Frederick Leighton Kramer and other Tucson city boosters, the event became an annual fiesta with the hopes of not only promoting Tucson and a fundraiser for the University of Arizona’s newly established polo team, but also a way to share Kramer’s newfound enthusiasm for Tucson’s beauty and history. However, the history the fiesta presented centered around the Anglo-American pioneers of southern Arizona. This approach ignored the …

Evaluation And Improvement Of The Design 4 Every Drop Course, Kenzy Fogle

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Utah and the greater Intermountain West are experiencing a water crisis. Many factors are contributing to this situation, including an arid climate exacerbated by climate change, rapid population growth, and a high-water-demanding landscape typology. Landscapes currently consume an estimated 60-80% of Utah’s potable water, representing a significant opportunity for water savings. However, changing the traditional water-dependent landscape typology requires educating the public regarding water-wise landscape design processes, best practices, and implementation approaches. Utah State University is the land grant university for Utah and home to one of the oldest Landscape Architecture departments in the Intermountain West. Utah State University’s community …
