Staff Education Project Strategies For Reducing No-Shows, Ekop Graham

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The staff education project addressed a gap in managing patient no-shows at a psychiatric clinic, where approximately 25% of scheduled appointments were missed. This issue severely impacted patient care continuity, delayed necessary treatments, and increased healthcare costs. The clinic’s practices of using reminder calls and emails had been insufficient in reducing no-shows. A literature review highlighted several effective interventions in imprvoing patient adherence and reducing missed appointments, such as facilitated appointment scheduling, personalized communication, and patient-centered strategies. The project aimed to enhance the nursing staff’s knowledge in addressing patient no-shows by educating them on causes, including logistical barriers and psychological …

Influence Of Demographics, Health, And Self-Objectification On Body Acceptance And Body Appreciation In Older Adults, Heather Russell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prior research has examined the demographic, health, and activity factors influencing how young people, particularly young women, see themselves concerning body appreciation and acceptance. However, body appreciation and acceptance as perceived by older men and women have not been well-studied. The purpose of the study was to examine the extent to which gender, age, quality of life assessment of physical and mental health, physical activity, and self-objectification influence body acceptance by others and body appreciation in adults ages 55-75. Self-objectification theory (SOT) was the framework used to examine the influence of two aspects of self-objectification (lack of autonomy and invisibility) …

The Lived Experiences Of Poverty Among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups In A Rights-Based Anti-Poverty Programme In Jharkhand India, Monimala Sengupta

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This research explores poverty and social exclusion among Primitive Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in India using T. H. Marshall's concept of social citizenship. With evidence showing a disproportionate burden of poverty in the Global South, indigenous groups are even overrepresented among the poor. India, home to one of the largest Indigenous populations, accounts for 70% of South Asia's impoverished, but the specific nature of poverty within these communities remain poorly understood.

Over the past two decades, India's national response to poverty has shifted towards rights-based, inclusive policies targeting marginalised communities such as Dalits, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes, historically subjected to …

Does Emotion Regulation Capacity Moderate Social Anxiety Risk Given Experiences Of Racial Microaggressions In Black/African American Undergraduate Students?, Alisha M. Sylvester

Honors College Theses

Racial microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights toward members of a marginalized community that may come in the form of verbal, behavioral, or environmental insults. Black/African Americans experience racial microaggressions frequently, and these experiences threaten mental health. Specifically, experiencing more racial microaggressions is linked with a risk for social anxiety. However, not all individuals within the community go on to experience social anxiety. Therefore, the present study sought to identify which individuals are more vulnerable to social anxiety given experiences of racism. Poorer emotion regulation (i.e., the ability to manage emotions) is a known risk factor for anxiety. Thus, I …

Comprehensive Guide For Cte Teachers: Implementing Functional Behavioral Assessments And Individualized Behavior Support Plans For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Hannah Martinez-Davenport, Debra Heban, Dawn Sandt

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

The training and requirements for initial licensure of Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers exhibit considerable variation across states, potentially resulting in a limited familiarity with high-impact special education practices among CTE educators. Two critical practices within this domain are the conduct of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and the design of Individualized Behavior Support Plans (IBSPs). The FBA process entails a thorough, team-based approach to data collection and analysis aimed at identifying the underlying causes of behaviors that impede a student with a disability from achieving academic, social, emotional, and vocational objectives. Based on the insights derived from the FBA, …

Breaking News: The Presence Of The White Racial Frame In Partisan Cable News Networks’ Coverage Of Officers Killing Black Victims, Andrea C. Smith, Jonathan M. Cox

Journal of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies

This study analyzes how two of the most popular and partisan cable news networks in the U.S., FOX and MSNBC, framed victims and officers in their coverage of cases where officers kill Black men. In addition, this work investigates how these networks discuss systemic racism. Using Feagin's white racial frame as a framework and critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool, the findings show that both networks exhibited anti-Black and pro-White framing within their reports. However, how these frames manifested differed across the networks, displaying differing similarities. Most notably, when counter-framing was present on MSNBC, they still perpetuated the anti-Black …

The Sound Of Change: Afrobeats And The Deconstruction Of African Stereotypes, Ibrahim Yusif Dec 2024

The Sound Of Change: Afrobeats And The Deconstruction Of African Stereotypes, Ibrahim Yusif

Journal of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies

This essay investigates how Afrobeats, a genre rooted in the dynamic cultural traditions of West Africa, serves as a strategic medium to counter the pervasive negative stereotypes about Africa perpetuated in Western media narratives. Often depicted through reductive portrayals of poverty, conflict, and disease, Africa’s representation in Western discourse starkly contrasts with the themes of vitality, resilience, and modernity inherent in Afrobeats music. I analyze the works of artists such as Rema, Davido, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage, highlighting how their music celebrates African pride, historical depth, and the empowerment of African women. Additionally, I examine the role of digital …

Intersectionality And The Framing Of News: A Discourse Analysis Of Black Press And Mainstream Coverage About Vice President Kamala Harris, Rockia K. Harris, Shaniece B. Bickham, Jinx C. Broussard

Journal of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies

Vice President Kamala Harris made history in 2020 by becoming the first woman, and first Black and Asian descent to earn this coveted role for any party (Clark & Adams, 2021). During her 2020 campaign, VP Harris showed how significant identity is to her autonomy as a first-generation American who openly supports historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), as a Howard University alumna and sorority member under the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Zeleny et al., 2020). Thus, Harris' identity and storyline became a personified view of inclusivity, further emphasizing her culturally and historically significant election. As the 2024 U.S. presidential …

Association Between Body Mass Index, Abdominal Obesity And Menopause-Related Symptoms In Postmenopausal Women, Brianna A. Rice, Patricia Heavey

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

Abstract: Existing research demonstrates a lack of data on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and menopause-related symptoms in postmenopausal women, particularly in Ireland. This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between BMI, general abdominal obesity and menopause-related symptoms in postmenopausal women. This should help bridge the data gap regarding postmenopausal women living in Ireland and their symptoms. Introduction: Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of a woman's menstrual cycle. This is caused by a reduction of the secretion of oestrogen and progesterone, leading to reduced ovarian function. These changes have been attributed …

Reframing The Management Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Investigating The Efficacy Of A Modified Low Fodmap Diet Approach On Symptom Response, Tara Howley, Lorraine Cooney, Suzanne L. Doyle

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

Background/ Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction with a multi-faceted pathogenesis. A diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs), known as a low FODMAP diet (LFD), is an effective management option for many, however, it is complex, costly, and restrictive. A milder, modified low FODMAP diet (MLFD) is one suggested alternative, however, data on this approach is lacking. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of a MLFD versus a LFD on symptom improvement in IBS.

Subjects/ Methods: Routine clinical data collected on individuals with a Rome IV IBS diagnosis between August …

The Parent-Child Privilege And The Parent-Child Crime: Observations On State V. Delong And In Re Agosto, Ellen Kandoian

Maine Law Review

Should a child be compelled to testify against his parent under threat of criminal punishment? Ignoring for a moment the applicable legal doctrines, there are several reasons why one might answer no. First, if we value the idea of family loyalty, and believe that loyalty of a child to his parent is particularly important for traditional, moral, and practical reasons, then measures taken by a state to undermine such loyalty must be viewed critically. Second, children tend to accumulate tremendous amounts of information about their parents' activities and are party or witness to many communications made by their parents with …

Analysis Of The Longitudinal Effect Of Home Advantage In The Brazilian Football Championship – Série A, Werlayne Leite, Marcelo C. Zanetti

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Athletes and teams typically obtain an advantage when competing at home, a phenomenon known as home advantage (HA). This study investigates the longitudinal effect of HA in the Brazilian Football Championship (Série A) over 21 seasons, analyzing 8,405 matches from 2003 to 2023. The results showed that the average HA was 35.1 ± 7.7%, while the competitive balance (CB) was 0.838 ± 0.145. A negative, non-significant correlation (r = -0.321, p = 0.157) was found between HA and CB, with CB explaining 10.3% of HA variation in the Brazilian league. HA de-creased over time, likely due to improved logistics, …

Empathetic Moments: A Student Affairs Reflection, Emily B. Kolby

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This reflection piece represents the culmination of my quarter-long exploration of the concept of empathy as it relates to my work within student affairs. Empathy is examined through the lens of my experiences as a college student and as an academic advisor at Bellevue College. The definition of empathy and its challenges and implications for use within academic advising are briefly discussed. This piece was adapted from a workshop that I presented at a department retreat in December 2014.
