How Scientists Can Investigate Perception: Phenomenological Foundations For Qualitative Research, Kimberly Tucker Dec 2024

How Scientists Can Investigate Perception: Phenomenological Foundations For Qualitative Research, Kimberly Tucker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While medicine makes visible symptoms of disease, phenomenology provides a different tool for making illness experience visible. Phenomenology offers a tool for a new kind of description and a different kind of knowledge of disease. It holds a unique epistemic power through the descriptions it generates through the application of the transcendental phenomenological method. Husserl’s method, outlined in Ideas I, provides the steps for its implementation in clinical research. This dissertation explores the application of the transcendental phenomenological method as a foundation for research on perception, with the goal of characterizing phenomenological validity as a proper goal of medical epistemology. …

Teaching Video Game As A Leisure Skill To Arab American Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Video Modeling In A School Setting, Lubna Alzayyat Dec 2024

Teaching Video Game As A Leisure Skill To Arab American Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Video Modeling In A School Setting, Lubna Alzayyat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leisure activities are important in assisting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to build relationships, learn to behave socially appropriately, and acquire new interests- competences that assist in cultivating positive self-consciousness (Specht et al., 2002; Womack et al., 2011). Statistics indicate that 2.3% of 8-year-old children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD (CDC, 2021). Despite these large numbers and the tremendous benefits of engaging in leisure activities, participation in leisure activities is lower among children with ASD when compared to their typically developing peers (Ratcliff et al., 2018). The situation is worse when compared to children with ASD …

It's Funny When You Think About It: Formal Complexity And Emotional Engagement In Twentieth Century American Humor, Noel Stanger Dec 2024

It's Funny When You Think About It: Formal Complexity And Emotional Engagement In Twentieth Century American Humor, Noel Stanger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is generally accepted by scholars of humor that humor requires an observer to take on a perspective of “critical distance” – or a perspective through which the observer can be critical of the target of humor. Consequently, work in the field is dominated by an assumption – whether implicit or explicit - that humor (and, especially, twentieth century American humor) necessitates that the observer disengages emotionally from the target of humor. In this project, I challenge this assumption and argue that humor has the potential to be extremely emotionally engaging. Focusing on written humor and building on both classic …

Wounded And Healing: Licensed Counselors’ Experience With Personal Suicide Loss And The Impact On Clinical Practice, Supervision, And Self-Disclosure, Shannon Strohl Dec 2024

Wounded And Healing: Licensed Counselors’ Experience With Personal Suicide Loss And The Impact On Clinical Practice, Supervision, And Self-Disclosure, Shannon Strohl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore the lived experiences of licensed counselors who experienced personal suicide loss and the impact of their loss on their professional lives. Of particular interest was the impact of the loss on countertransference, professional direction and choices, and self-disclosure with clients and other professionals in the field (e.g., supervisors, professors, and colleagues). The concept of the wounded healer, as described by Zerubavel and Wright (2012), served as the theoretical framework used to understand the participants’ stories. Previous studies have examined the wounded healer among psychologists; however, few studies explored the experience of licensed counselors as wounded …

Daily Associations Between Minority Stressors And Dissociation For Sexual Minority Women And Transgender/Nonbinary Individuals: The Role Of Interpersonal Trauma, Kriti Behari Dec 2024

Daily Associations Between Minority Stressors And Dissociation For Sexual Minority Women And Transgender/Nonbinary Individuals: The Role Of Interpersonal Trauma, Kriti Behari

Theses - ALL

Sexual minority women (SMW), transgender, and/or gender-diverse (TGD) individuals experience interpersonal traumatic stressors (e.g., childhood abuse, sexual violence) at higher rates than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. This population also experiences ongoing stressors related to their minoritized sexual and gender identities (e.g., stigma, discrimination). Dissociation has been positively associated with trauma exposure-related factors (e.g., trauma type, chronicity, and severity) as well as identity-related stressors (e.g., stigma, discrimination) for sexual and gender minority people. Some research suggests that experiencing dissociation in response to traumatic stressors can result in individuals responding to non-traumatic chronic stressors with dissociation. However, no study has yet examined …

Examining The Dynamic Nature Of Acceptability In A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Tyler J. Young Dec 2024

Examining The Dynamic Nature Of Acceptability In A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Tyler J. Young

Theses - ALL

Acceptability, or the perception that an intervention is appropriate, fair, and reasonable, is a critical construct to assess when implementing interventions (Kazdin, 1981). Despite original conceptualizations of acceptability as dynamic, or changing throughout intervention implementation (Foster & Mash, 1999; Schwartz & Baer, 1991), repeated acceptability assessments have been conducted up to only 9.26% of the time in intervention research (Silva et al., 2019). Studies that have previously conducted repeated assessments did not descriptively report or analyze differences in acceptability across sessions (e.g., DuBois et al., 2016; Raggi et al., 2009). No study to date has conducted dynamic assessments of acceptability …

Toward Prototypical Vision Clustering, James Chenhao Liang Dec 2024

Toward Prototypical Vision Clustering, James Chenhao Liang

Theses

Over the past decades, deep learning methods have emerged as the predominant approach in computer vision. Most approaches rely on complex interactions among pixels, involving heavy computations. However, Human vision possesses a unique attention mechanism that selectively focuses on relevant parts of the visual field while disregarding irrelevant information. This can be likened to a clustering approach, in which individual pixel points are decomposed and reorganized into relevant concepts to address various tasks. This dissertation explores the frontier of vision clustering by integrating innovative prototypical learning with advanced Transformer architectures, which heralds a significant paradigm shift applied to vision clustering. …

Neurophysiological Indicators Of Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: Examining Discrimination And Habituation Among Children Born Preterm, Erin Stephanie Misato Matsuba Dec 2024

Neurophysiological Indicators Of Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: Examining Discrimination And Habituation Among Children Born Preterm, Erin Stephanie Misato Matsuba

Dissertations - ALL

Children born preterm are at an elevated likelihood for autism (ELA) and intellectual disabilities (ID). Event-related Potentials (ERPs), such as the P1 and the Mismatch Negativity (MMN), can be used to measure underlying neurophysiology, which may aid in the identification of these important neurodevelopmental and cognitive outcomes. Specifically, enhanced P1 and MMN discrimination, measured via the difference between two alternating sounds, is associated with autism while reduced neurophysiological habituation is associated with a lower IQ. The present study sought to examine whether early auditory discrimination and habituation could differentially predict autistic traits and cognitive abilities, respectively, as well as assess …

Seizing Welfare From The Bankrupt, Michael D. Sousa

University of Cincinnati Law Review

The earned income tax credit (EITC) is currently the largest means-tested antipoverty program in the United States that assists low-income working families surviving along the edges of poverty. A central component of the national welfare system, the EITC has lifted millions of families with children out of poverty and has produced myriad benefits for their everyday lives. But most of the poor and near-poor endure in the low-wage labor market and often lead turbulent financial lives, plagued by precarious employment along with deleterious material and psychological constraints in budgeting for daily expenses. For the segment of these families also burdened …

The Weight Of Words: An Investigation On The Impact Of Stereotypical Body Language On Body Dissatisfaction, Hannah M. Brown Dec 2024

The Weight Of Words: An Investigation On The Impact Of Stereotypical Body Language On Body Dissatisfaction, Hannah M. Brown

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Body image research is extensive, producing various tools to assess body dissatisfaction and related factors. Despite this, eating disorder rates remain high. This study investigates the relationship between self-schemas, the lexical frameworks of body-related words, and their impact on body shape dissatisfaction. Sociocultural pressures to conform to beauty standards make body image talk ubiquitous and influential. Previous studies primarily used explicit measures, like self-reports, which are subject to biases, whereas implicit measures reveal underlying cognitive mechanisms. This study employed the Stunkard Figure Scale to measure body dissatisfaction and the Body Appreciation Scale 2 to assess body appreciation, examining cognitive biases …

Effects Of Self-Determination Theory (Sdt)-Based Instructional Strategies On Learner Engagement In Asynchronous Online Discussions (Aods), Qi Wu

Dissertations - ALL

Abstract Learner engagement is a malleable state influenced by various contextual factors. Prior research has identified several elements that affect engagement, including learning styles, course perception, computer self-efficacy, and a sense of presence. Furthermore, it is imperative to consider both learner engagement dimensions and environmental affordances when investigating learner engagement. This study, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), investigates the effects of SDT-based instructional strategies on learner engagement in asynchronous online discussions (AODs). The primary aim is to examine how these strategies, designed to support learners perceived psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness, and competence, affect behavioral, cognitive, and emotional dimensions of …

The Ghostly Angel In The Haunted Home: The Haunted House As A Metaphor For A Woman's Body In Crimson Peak, Andrea I. Amado-Fajardo Dec 2024

The Ghostly Angel In The Haunted Home: The Haunted House As A Metaphor For A Woman's Body In Crimson Peak, Andrea I. Amado-Fajardo

Theses and Dissertations

Crimson Peak (2015, dir. Guillermo del Toro), often overshadowed by del Toro's more critically acclaimed filmography, deserves to be acknowledged for its central trauma metaphor and its nuanced approach to gender. Far from being merely a horror movie fueled by disturbing sequences such as those found in contemporary supernatural horror films, Crimson Peak slowly unravels how Allerdale Hall parallels the film's female leads as they house and live with ghosts, revenants of a traumatic past. This essay explores the personification of the haunted house as a metaphor for the personified trauma that resides in a woman's body using Crimson Peak …

Altruistic Arbitrage And Climate Change Mitigation:Rethinking The Role Of Cap And Trade Policies, Fatjon Kaja, Matthew G. Nagler

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

We examine the implications for efficient public goods provision by exploring the relationship of altruism to the endowment effect, focusing our analysis on the problem of climate change mitigation. We argue that the reduction in distortionary valuation (i.e., willingness-to-accept departing from willingness-to-pay) experienced by altruistic market participants implies an ability to mediate ignored trades and extract the gains from trade — an activity we call "altruistic arbitrage" — thereby improving the efficiency of markets. This activity, broadly speaking, restores the Coase Theorem in the context of WTA-WTP disparities. Moreover, it leads to previously unidentified benefits to when markets are employed …
