Correlation Between Pre-Season Single-Leg Hop Testing Data And Lower Extremity Injuries In Collegiate Soccer Players, Ashley Kuchenbuch, Justin M. Stanek
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Lower extremity injuries are very common in collegiate soccer athletes and often lead to long-term rehabilitation programs and a decline in the athlete’s overall quality of life. Using single leg hop tests to identify “at-risk” athletes before the competitive season begins could allow medical staff to implement injury prevention programs that could help reduce the incidence of lower extremity injuries throughout the season. The purpose of this study was to determine if data taken from single leg hop (SLH) testing could help predict lower extremity injuries in female collegiate soccer players. A convenience sample of twenty-one participants were chosen to …
Dynamic And Concordance-Assisted Learning For Risk Stratification With Application To Alzheimer’S Disease, Wen Li, Ruosha Li, Ziding Feng, Jing Ning
Dynamic And Concordance-Assisted Learning For Risk Stratification With Application To Alzheimer’S Disease, Wen Li, Ruosha Li, Ziding Feng, Jing Ning
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Dynamic prediction models capable of retaining accuracy by evolving over time could play a significant role for monitoring disease progression in clinical practice. In biomedical studies with long-term follow up, participants are often monitored through periodic clinical visits with repeat measurements until an occurrence of the event of interest (e.g. disease onset) or the study end. Acknowledging the dynamic nature of disease risk and clinical information contained in the longitudinal markers, we propose an innovative concordance-assisted learning algorithm to derive a real-time risk stratification score. The proposed approach bypasses the need to fit regression models, such as joint models of …

A Mother's Understanding Of Her Adolescent: A Social Anxiety Study, Cheronda Pinkard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) affects 1% to 13% of adolescents, often placing significant demands on their caregivers. Mothers frequently adapt their behaviors to accommodate their child’s anxiety, which may impact their well-being and the parent-child relationship. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of mothers accommodating adolescents with SAD to understand better the emotional and relational toll of this caregiving role. The problem addressed is the limited understanding of how maternal accommodation affects mothers. Mental health practitioners, educators, and policymakers may benefit from this research by gaining insight into these families' challenges and informing family-centered interventions and support services. Guided …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers
Among viral myocarditis, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a rare causative agent with associated cardiac complications. This report provides insight into the disease progression and sheds light on reported cases from the literature. We present the clinical courses of two patients, aged 68 and 58, who developed myocarditis secondary to hMPV infection. Despite the typical severity associated with viral myocarditis in older populations, both patients experienced significant improvement in their condition and ultimately survived. This report highlights the necessity of recognizing hMPV as a potential cause of myocarditis, particularly in older adults presenting with simultaneous respiratory and cardiac symptoms. The recovery …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The increasing rate of cybervictimization has been documented in various countries, including Malaysia. However, there is a dearth of measurement tools with sound psychometric properties suitable for the Malaysian context. To address this methodological gap, the Malaysia Cybervictimization Scale for Adolescents (MyCVS-A) was developed based on qualitative inputs from adolescents in Malaysia. It was subsequently translated into Malay (MyCVS-A-M) and Chinese (MyCVS-A-C). Two studies were conducted to examine the psychometric properties of these two translated versions. In Study 1, 281 secondary school students completed the MyCVS-A-M, the Malay version of the cybervictimization subscale of the European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire …

Finite Element Models For Predicting Moisture Effects On Bolt Embedment And Connection In Timber, Henry Meleki Kiwelu
Finite Element Models For Predicting Moisture Effects On Bolt Embedment And Connection In Timber, Henry Meleki Kiwelu
Tanzania Journal of Science
The mechanical performances of timber connections are particularly important for timber engineers involved in the design of the wood structures. The mechanism of connection must be well understood in order to design a safer connection and avoid catastrophic failure. Often connections are made weak fuse elements by deliberate intent to ensure that if structural systems fail it will be by controllable ductile deformation of connections in load paths. Model method of determining engineering design capacities of laterally loaded dowel fasteners, such as bolts, screws and nails was developed. It should however be pointed out that FE and similar continuum model …

A Comparative Study Of Unfolding Techniques For Gamma-Ray Spectra Obtained With Nai(Tl) Scintillation Detectors, Mwingereza J Kumwenda
Tanzania Journal of Science
Iterative unfolding methods are frequently used in acquiring true gamma-ray spectra from the measured spectra. However, the peak resolution of iterative unfolding methods especially, in Gold algorithm method is very challenging, especially in the case of scintillation detectors, where several instrumental artifacts and distortions interfere with the true spectral shape. Therefore, this paper presents a comparative study of the direct matrix inversion unfolding method (DMIUM) and iterative unfolding method with emphasis on the Gold algorithm method (GAM) in converting measured gamma-ray spectra of the NaI(Tl) scintillation detector into the true gamma-ray spectra. The Monte Carlo simulation based on the Geant4 …

Analysis Of Unsteady Convective Boundary Layer Flow With Magnetic Fields, Chemical Reaction, Thermal Radiation And Variable Fluid Properties, Jonas A. James, Makungu J. Ng’Oga, Augustino I. Msigwa, Ali A. Omary
Tanzania Journal of Science
This study extends the previous work by Kitengeso et al. (2018) by investigating unsteady convective boundary layer flow, incorporating magnetic fields, chemical reactions, radiation, and variable fluid properties over the inclined plate. The boundary layer and Boussinesq approximations are used to derive the magnetohydrodynamic flow equations. Thereafter, the equations are transformed into similarity form using similarity variables and then solved using the 4th order Runge - Kutta method. The key parameters such as the magnetic parameter, chemical reaction rate, variable fluid properties, unsteadiness, convection, and radiation parameter significantly affect flow behavior over an inclined plane. It was found that increasing …

Uncertainties In Measuring Lifetimes Of Nuclear Excited States Using A Fast Electronic Timing System Made Of Nai (Tl) Scintillators, Innocent J Lugendo
Tanzania Journal of Science
Measurements of the lifetimes of nuclear excited states need to be as accurate as possible due to their crucial role in making or verifying various theoretical predictions in the nuclear science and astrophysics. Nevertheless, metrological difficulties in these measurements have brought about controversies that significantly influence the quest to understand the atomic structure, decay processes and nuclear reactions. Among the obstacles are the accuracy and precision of the systems and techniques used for measuring the lifetime of an excited state. It follows that any hypothesis regarding the nuclear behavior can only be considerable upon verification and accountability of stability and …

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This article discusses the development of a prototype spray pipe evaporator and its efficiency in producing salt in Indonesia. Due to the length of the salt harvesting season in Indonesia, many salt farmers have closed their business doors, leaving many salt ponds abandoned. The spray pipe evaporator prototype was designed to produce a brine solution with a salinity of 23–24 Be from seawater, which has a salinity of 2.5–3.5 Be, in less than 3 days. This is faster than the conventional process of a brine solution salinity of 24 Be. The prototype spray pipe evaporator was assessed in a 20 …
