Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interfaces play a critical role in modern structures, where integrating multiple materials and components is essential to achieve specific functions. Enhancing the mechanical performance of these interfaces, particularly their resistance to delamination, is essential to enable extremely lightweight designs and improve energy efficiency. Improving toughness (or increasing energy dissipation during delamination) has traditionally involved modifying materials to navigate the well-known strength-toughness trade-off. However, a more effective strategy involves promoting non-local or extrinsic energy dissipation. This approach encompasses complex degradation phenomena that extend beyond the crack tip, such as long-range bridging, crack fragmentation, and ligament formation. This work explores this innovative …

New Chapters In An Old Book: New Discoveries In Transferrin's Blood Stream Modulators And Analytical Methods, Shelby Thomas Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Human serum transferrin is a 79 kDa glycoprotein responsible for the safe transport of iron throughout the blood stream. Transferrin binds up to two ferric ions in two domains known as the N-lobe and C-lobe respectively. Thus, there are four transferrin metalloforms: apo-Tf (with no iron bound), FeN-Tf (with one iron bound in the N-lobe), FeC-Tf (with one iron bound in the C-lobe) and holo-Tf(with two iron ions bound, one in each of the lobes). The two domains are homologous but feature differences in the kinetics and thermodynamics of iron binding and release. The two lobes are also different in …

Epilepsy Therapies Symposium | Do We Really "Outgrow" Seizures?, Mohammed Ilyas, Dean Naritoku, Alica M Goldman Dec 2024

Epilepsy Therapies Symposium | Do We Really "Outgrow" Seizures?, Mohammed Ilyas, Dean Naritoku, Alica M Goldman

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Initiation and maintenance of antiseizure therapy can be relatively straightforward in most patients. Depending on epilepsy type, patients may be more or less likely to enter remission or a resolution of their epilepsy and the International League Against Epilepsy developed clinically guiding definitions in this regard. The mechanisms by which resolution or remission are achieved are poorly understood which complicates clinical decision making and risk estimate for future seizure relapse. The impetus for the maintenance of medical therapy in a seizure-free patient is also age-dependent. In children, one ought to consider the unknown effects of antiseizure medications on the developing …

Most forms of clinical research examine a very minute cross section of the patient journey. Much of the knowledge and evidence base driving current genomic medicine practice entails blind spots arising from underrepresentation and lack of research participation in clinicogenomic databases. The flaws are perpetuated in AI models and clinical practice guidelines that reflect the lack of diversity in data being used. Participation in clinical research and biobanks is impeded in many populations due to a variety of factors that include knowledge, trust, healthcare access, administrative barriers, and technology gaps. A recent symposium brought industry, clinical, and research participants in …

Act For Ocd: An Example Of Act And Values-Based Exposures, Leila K. Capel, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Exposure exercises as seen in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) are standard in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In the last two decades, additional research has been conducted on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and the ways that exposure exercises are conducted from an ACT model. Empirical support for conducting exposures from an ACT model exists. Group level statistics suggest that ACT with ACT-based exposures is as effective as traditional ERP or CBT. A key component of ACT and values-based exposures is the focus on teaching psychological flexibility to allow for engagement with values-based …

The Gestalt Effect Of Memory Poetry: A Response To The Cognitive Seriousness Of Literature, John R. Hart Dec 2024

The Gestalt Effect Of Memory Poetry: A Response To The Cognitive Seriousness Of Literature, John R. Hart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project challenges the Anti-Cognitivist position that literature may have plenty to say about the world within a text, yet literature cannot contribute to knowledge outside the text. Drawing on the work of Cognitivists and others, I argue that at least one subgenre of literature—memory poetry—can deepen, enrich, and broaden areas or understanding. Indeed, there are cases where understanding may be so lacking as to only allow for us recognize how much we do not know about an experience, such as the experience of a post-traumatic flashback, at a more visceral level than the DSM-V can achieve in a clinical …
