“I Had Not Really Considered This At All”: Preservice Teachers Critique Media Creators Using Five Key Questions, Johnny Allred, Lauren Mcclanahan
Journal of Media Literacy Education
We have a responsibility, now more than ever, to develop media literacy skills and to help the younger generation develop them as well. This essay tells the story of how two teacher educators invited their preservice teachers to use the Center for Media Literacy’s (2009) Five Key Questions to critically analyze and reflect on the media and messages they interact with on a regular basis. The authors suggest that classroom activities like this can help future teachers—and, in turn, their young students—develop habits of mind to become more critical consumers of digital media.

Subvertising In The Classroom: A Comparative Study On Fostering Critical Media Literacy, Inés Leal-Rico
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Subvertising, traditionally linked to counterculture and anti-consumption, is utilized in education to reveal the manipulative strategies of corporate messaging to students. Classroom use of cut-and-paste methods deconstructs advertisement messages, fostering an understanding of how needs and desires are constructed through appropriation, incorporation, and transformation tactics. This research aims to comprehend fully the implementation and impact of subvertising workshops in educational settings by analyzing six scholarly articles on applied workshops. The data, sourced from a previous scoping review on subvertising, enabled a comprehensive evaluation of methodologies and effective techniques. The study compares these cases to the ten key steps proposed by …

A Computational Framework To Optimize Piezoelectric Power Harvesting From A Uav Wing, Hassan Koko, Gihad Ibrahim
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
This paper proposes a computational framework to optimize the ambient power harvesting from an unmanned air vehicle wing by means of piezoelectricity. First, the wing shape and material are selected based on specific design factors. The wing is then subjected to a vibrational analysis in order to predict the first torsional frequency required to calculate an optimum charging speed. The harvester module is then selected so that the vibration frequency of the charging speed fails within the resonance frequency of the harvester. A finite element modeling is conducted to predict the harvester output voltage during the chagrining speed. Finally, a …

Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly expanding my homelab, a personal setup for me to experiment with software, hardware, and deployment configurations. One driving force behind this is my desire to digitize and save anything that is important to me or that I want easy access to. I started with my family’s old CD collection, then moved on to any Blu-rays movie discs we had. Eventually, I started thinking about what else I care about and don’t want to lose track of. This brought me to the thought that any YouTube video that I may want to revisit …

Probing The Interactions Of Anticancer Drug Doxorubicin To Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Jason Martin
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Doxorubicin (Doxo) is a historically significant anti-cancer drug that has been used to treat multiple types of cancers for half a century. The drug targets DNA of cancer cells through a binding mode called intercalation, acting as roadblock during DNA replication to stop tumor formation. While Doxo has been extensively studied through traditional methods, only a handful of research has utilized single molecule methods, which can provide new insights at the molecular level. In this study, we used dual beam optical tweezers to isolate single DNA molecules and mechanically manipulate the DNA in the presence of Doxo. We conducted two …

"Does Anyone Believe Me"?: The Traumatization Of Domestic Violence Survivors In The Criminal Justice System, Olivia Depalma
Master of Arts in Human Services
Survivors of domestic violence are often subject to chronic trauma as well as a heightened risk of injuries and mental health problems and disorders. The intention of the author is to focus on how trauma impacts a survivor’s ability to maneuver and interact with the criminal justice system (CJS). Prior studies have shown how survivor’s behaviors, usually the result of trauma, can lead to misconceived notions and beliefs in court officials and those involved in the CJS. Survivors will often face judgment, doubt, and criticism in the CJS, and this can impact their willingness to come forward, report the abuse, …

In our work, a new non-peripheral zinc(II) phthalocyanine bearing octa carboxylic acid ethyl ester derivative substituted triazole attached propylmercaptothiobenzylmercapto derivative was synthesized by the tetramerization reaction of phthalonitrile. The photochemical in vitro photodynamic activity of zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc-I), such as human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines, was investigated in this study. The singlet oxygen generation property of novel zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc-I) was also examined due to the significantly high singlet oxygen quantum yield of ZnPc-I (ΦΔ = 0.66). The antiproliferative effects of ZnPc-I were also investigated on A549 and H1299 cell lines, our results demonstrate that the ZnPc-I has …
