Electrochemical Based Quantification Of Bacterial Growth In Media Using Square Wave Voltammetry And Low Cost Screen Printed Electrodes, Simon Peter Whelan, Shirin Naserikarimvand, Zari Tehrani, Martin Peacock, Owen Guy, David Gethin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

A novel method for determining the yield of bacterial growth using square wave voltammetry and screen printed electrodes is described here. This procedure was shown to be a reliable and accurate way to quickly determine the level of bacterial growth within culturing media and these results suggest that the combination of such sensors and the application of square wave voltammetry is suitable for applications such as within a bioreactor where the rapid determination of bacterial growth may be necessary.

Drone Imagery And Deep Learning For Mapping The Density Of Wild Pacific Oysters To Manage Their Expansion Into Protected Areas, Aser Mata, David Moffat, Sílvia Almeida, Marko Radeta, William Jay, Nigel Mortimer, Katie Awty-Carroll, Oliver Thomas, Vanda Brotas, Steve Groom

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The recent expansion of wild Pacific oysters already had negative repercussions on sites in Europe and has raised further concerns over their potential harmful impact on the balance of biomes within protected areas. Monitoring their colonisation, especially at early stages, has become an urgent ecological issue. Current efforts to monitor wild Pacific oysters rely on “walk-over” surveys that are highly laborious and often limited to specific areas of easy access. Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), commonly known as drones, can provide an effective tool for surveying complex terrains and detect Pacific oysters. This study provides a novel workflow for automated …

Transmission+Interference: A New Materialist And Machine-Oriented Approach To Collectively Make-With Noise, David Strang

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the materiality at play within installation and performance artworks from across the interdisciplinary fields of media arts, digital arts and contemporary technological arts and is positioned at the noisier end of the artistic spectrum of these disciplines. The practice-led research presented here deals with the shift away from clean digital media environments of production in order to embrace a more material focused approach that has emerged within recent years (see the emergence of physical computing and electronics practices), especially across sonic arts practices (see also the re-emergence of modular synthesis). The aim is to unfold an understanding …

Before Sensing Becomes A Some-Thing: Writing With The Bodily Experience Of Liminality In Processes Of Social Organising, Juliana Schneider Jan 2024

Before Sensing Becomes A Some-Thing: Writing With The Bodily Experience Of Liminality In Processes Of Social Organising, Juliana Schneider

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

The research addresses organisational practitioners’ capacity for noticing and responding to fleeting, small gestures and indeterminate impressions that register as bodily sensations in the midst of dynamic circumstances. The thesis explores such experience as occurring in the realm of the liminal - liminality taken up as a quality of experience when vague perceptions are sensed and felt viscerally at the very edge of articulation. The research asks how this domain of experience, here discussed as liminal perceptive sensibility, may be brought further into articulation while retaining the quality of the experience. This involves experimenting with a combination of first person reflexive …

Mapping A Lived Experience In Landscape: An Artist’S Analysis Of Gps And Gis Data, Becalelis Brodskis Jan 2024

Mapping A Lived Experience In Landscape: An Artist’S Analysis Of Gps And Gis Data, Becalelis Brodskis

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis involves a critical analysis of data types and digital interfaces used in a socially engaged arts practice aligned with the concerns of participatory mapping. The research identifies a problem which occurs when the development and use of technologies begins to conflate data with its visual representation or, conversely, reduces the experience of reality to what can be documented. The thesis aligns with a concern that this impacts the perception of, and sensitivity to, available qualities or indeed possibilities of experience. Responding to this concern questions are raised relating to how and why qualities of objectivity or subjectivity are …

Optimisation Of Classification Methods To Differentiate Morphologically-Similar Pollen Grains From Ft-Ir Spectra, Laura Scoble, Simon J. Ussher, Mark F. Fitzsimons, Lauren Ansell, Matthew Craven, Ralph M. Fyfe Jan 2024

Optimisation Of Classification Methods To Differentiate Morphologically-Similar Pollen Grains From Ft-Ir Spectra, Laura Scoble, Simon J. Ussher, Mark F. Fitzsimons, Lauren Ansell, Matthew Craven, Ralph M. Fyfe

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

A growing body of research is demonstrating the potential of Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to identify and differentiate morphologically similar pollen taxa. The Poaceae (grass) family is a large and complex with morphologically similar pollen grains. It is not possible to use traditional light microscopy to differentiate Poaceae species, or genus, based on pollen morphological characteristics. This research presents a study of five species from the Poaceae family found across a wide variety of different moorland vegetation communities, to test the extent to which FT-IR microspectroscopy can be used to separate and identify these species and develop statistical approaches for …

Investigating A Motivation Model For Gamified E-Learning: A Mixed Methods Approach, Ali Sen Jan 2024

Investigating A Motivation Model For Gamified E-Learning: A Mixed Methods Approach, Ali Sen

Plymouth Business School Theses

Investigating A Motivation Model for Gamified E-learning: A Mixed Methods Approach Ali Sen Abstract There has been a recent increase in educational interest in gamification over the past five years (Behl et al., 2022; Ertan & Kocadere, 2022). A central tenet of the increase in its popularity may stem from its motivational power in educational settings (Sailer et al., 2017; Sailer & Homner, 2020). However, prior research on gamification has not sufficiently investigated the mechanisms by which the phenomenon induces its motivational effects. A crucial question to consider is how the motivational theories that underpin gamification work. Consequently, the current …

Research in the area of entrepreneurship and its potential contributions to economic growth and employment has grown a significant momentum and has now become a matter of utmost concern for a large number of academicians and policy-makers. Despite the recent emergence of an immense quantity of research outputs in entrepreneurship in developing economies, there are still several areas which need to be explored and evaluated. In particular, due to financial constraints and general resource limitations, entrepreneurial spirit has not yet fully developed and nurtured in most developing economies. In the case of Saudi Arabia, financing potential entrepreneurs has not necessarily …

New Business Models For Technology Innovation In Healthcare: A Value Network Perspective, Aira Patrice Ong Jan 2024

New Business Models For Technology Innovation In Healthcare: A Value Network Perspective, Aira Patrice Ong

Plymouth Business School Theses

Business models (BMs) play an important role in facilitating the delivery and integration of technological innovations within the healthcare sector, catering the needs of healthtech entrepreneurs, managers, healthcare providers, researchers and policy makers. However, despite the BM’s significance, existing conceptualisations of BM do not adequately guide in designing them taking into account the complexities of the healthcare environment. This demands a dynamic approach in designing BM, considering the healthcare value chain stakeholders’ thoughts, values, prejudices, views, feelings and perspectives. With the exploratory nature and lack of research in this area, the overall aim of the study is to design an …

Methodological Challenges In Conducting Cross-Cultural/Language Research With Spanish Speakers: The Role Of The Researcher/Translator, Catherine Flores Ph.D. Jan 2024

Methodological Challenges In Conducting Cross-Cultural/Language Research With Spanish Speakers: The Role Of The Researcher/Translator, Catherine Flores Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

With the increase in global research, it is common for researchers to investigate topics in intercultural settings, both in their own home countries and abroad. Although findings from this research are prolific, rarely are detailed examples given or practical suggestions offered, particularly in relation to the role of the translator/researcher. The significant and often undervalued role of the translator/researcher in cross cultural/language qualitative research warrants methodological considerations at the onset and throughout the research. Nonetheless, few qualitative studies transparently report the process of how the translation findings were developed. This paper addresses this gap by examining a Latinx postgraduate student’s …
