New Reader Response: An Examination Of Three High-Achieving High School Readers And Their Literacies, Minkyu Kim Dec 2024

New Reader Response: An Examination Of Three High-Achieving High School Readers And Their Literacies, Minkyu Kim

Essays in Education

Since its inception, reader response theory has battled misrepresentations. It was reduced to discursive anarchy, perceived as not rigorous, and set apart from important scholarship movements like critical theory. This research argues that by expanding the definition of “reader” in “reader response” to include digital (aka “new”) literacies, the reader-text transaction can be much more inclusive, dynamic, and most importantly, true to our students’ everyday literacies. This article also includes a discussion of why it is so important for teachers to include digital platforms as sites of interrogation in a safe educative setting. By studying the out-of-school literacy behaviors of …

Enhancing Image Classification Using A Convolutional Neural Network Model, Zena M. Saadi, Ahmed T. Sadiq, Omar Z. Akif, Marwa M. Eid

Journal of Soft Computing and Computer Applications

In recent years, with the rapid development of the current classification system in digital content identification, automatic classification of images has become the most challenging task in the field of computer vision. As can be seen, vision is quite challenging for a system to automatically understand and analyze images, as compared to the vision of humans. Some research papers have been done to address the issue in the low-level current classification system, but the output was restricted only to basic image features. However, similarly, the approaches fail to accurately classify images. For the results expected in this field, such as …

Understanding Barriers To Optimal Supervision And Delivery Of The Nationalcertificate (Vocational) Curriculum Through Tvet College Lecturers’Reflective Evaluations, Angelona Rewhydah Williams, Karel Prins, Bongani Innocent Nkambule, Sindile Amina Ngubane

REID (Research and Evaluation in Education)

Propounded by reflective theory, this qualitative case study drew on TVET lecturers' reflective evaluations of factors that they considered to have a bearing on optimal supervision and delivery of the National Certificate (Vocational) curriculum. Data were collected from participants across three campuses of a TVET college in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Twelve lecturers of different seniority were purposively sampled and interviewed in two focus group sessions. The first focus session involved six participants: four post-level 2 and two post-level 3 personnel recognized by the South African Council for Educators (SACE) as "office-based lecturers" and classified within the middle …

A Case Report Of Long-Latency Evoked Diaphragm Potentials After Exposure To Acute Intermittent Hypoxia In Post-West Nile Virus Meningoencephalitis, Joseph F. Welch, Erica A. Dale, Jayakrishnan Nair, Paul W. Davenport, Emily J. Fox, Gordon S. Mitchell

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

We present a case report of a 42-year-old female with post-West Nile virus meningoencephalitis who exhibited unique, long-latency diaphragm potentials evoked by transcranial and cervical magnetic stimulation after exposure to acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH). The subject was recruited for a study investigating AIH effects on respiratory motor function in healthy individuals. She had contracted West Nile virus infection 5 years before assessment that resulted in hospitalization and persistent allodynia but was not reported to the research team. During the study, transcranial (TMS) and cervical (CMS) magnetic stimulation were performed before and 30-60 min after a single presentation of AIH [15, …

Interactive Visualization Workflows For Mitigating Analytical Uncertainty, Kaustav Bhattacharjee Dec 2024

Interactive Visualization Workflows For Mitigating Analytical Uncertainty, Kaustav Bhattacharjee

Dissertations

This dissertation takes a process-centric and stakeholder-first perspective for handling analytical uncertainty: the form of uncertainty that confronts data analysts' insight-generation processes in high-consequence decision-making scenarios. The cost of an incorrect decision when data is used for movie recommendations as opposed to when personal data is used to drive insights or when data-driven modeling is used to drive real-time decisions for maintaining the health of a grid are vastly different in terms of consequences. This dissertation looks at analytical uncertainty in two real-world scenarios: i) how sensitive information leakage can be prevented during the open data release process with data …

Crowd-Sourced Learning For Computer Graphics Applications, Yunhao Zhang Dec 2024

Crowd-Sourced Learning For Computer Graphics Applications, Yunhao Zhang

Dissertations

Computer Graphics (CG) revolves around virtual content creation using computational methods, spanning applications from games to visual effects. Typically, the creation of CG content is led by expert practitioners who guide computational algorithms towards satisfactory results. Thus, creating CG content often requires manual iterations encompassing algorithm design, parameter tuning, and aesthetic feedback. This work investigates how to leverage crowd-sourcing to streamline such creation processes, focusing on animation and simulation. In animation, a novel crowd-sourcing framework is proposed for combat animation, enabling users to analyze motion similarities, and retrieve matching motions using novel crowd-sourced motion features. Such features enable quantifying previously …

'Evading The Tax Collector’: Native Responses To The Head Tax In Colonial Njombe, Tanzania, 1920-1960, Peter Chaula, Hezron Kangalawe

Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies

Tax collection was one of the core preoccupations of the colonial government in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and other colonies in the Africa that persisted even after independence. Direct taxation formed the basis of colonial taxation in Tanganyika. Head tax was a dominant form of direct taxation with its burden being borne primarily by Africans. This article uses the colonial Njombe District of Tanganyika to explore the responses of the African taxpayers to the head tax. The available data indicates that colonial head tax policies and practices in Njombe elicited varied responses from Africans with covert forms forming the mainstay of …

Revisiting African Religion As An Academic Discipline In Africa: History And Prospects, Ivan B. Kivinge Dec 2024

Revisiting African Religion As An Academic Discipline In Africa: History And Prospects, Ivan B. Kivinge

Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies

Three main religious traditions—indigenous African beliefs and practices (African religion), Christianity and Islam—have dominated everyday life of communities in Africa today. Scholarship on religion indicates that only African religion originated in Africa— Christianity and Islam are foreign religions. Many Africans today have been active Christians and Muslims, who are sometimes being misleadingly taught that African religion is demonic and forms of paganism. This article employs historical and philosophical approaches to show how the study of African religion has navigated through various historical currents and resultant implications on the way the current generation views it. In the end, the article proposes …

An Energy-Efficient Clustering Technique Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmad Alkhayyat, Rohit Sharma Dec 2024

An Energy-Efficient Clustering Technique Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmad Alkhayyat, Rohit Sharma

NJF Intelligent Engineering Journal

The technology of wireless sensor networks (WSN) has recently gained widespread recognition as an emerging one. A WSN consists of a set of sensors powered by batteries. Inaccessible locations usually make it difficult to replace or recharge sensors' batteries. These networks are plagued by energy consumption, which is the main problem. The clustering algorithms are remarkably effective in dealing with such problems in this regard. As a result, this technique appears to help reduce node energy consumption, which ultimately increases the network's lifespan. Heterogeneous and homogeneous clustering algorithms exist. In homogeneous clustering algorithms, all nodes have the same technical characteristics, …
