Limits Of Longwood's Electron Microscope: A Study In Biological Imaging, Rachel Danzitz, Bjoern Ch. Ludwar

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

This study evaluates the imaging capabilities and limitations of the Hitachi TM4000II Plus Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and its Scanning Transmission adapter in biological imaging. A variety of specimens, including protozoans (e.g., Volvox and nematodes), bacteria (e.g., Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense, Bacillus cereus, and Escherichia coli), tissue samples, and blood, were analyzed. While the SEM effectively imaged protozoans and bacteria, its ability to visualize viruses was deemed impractical. Despite claims of magnification up to 100,000x, clarity significantly decreased beyond 5,000x. The transmission adapter proved functional but challenging to operate consistently. The study highlights the microscope's limitations in producing high-clarity, …

Denaturation Station: The Effect Of Guanidinium Chloride On Yeast Flocculation, Taylor Pulley, Jade Riddle, Angelina Scotece

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Flocculation is a phenomenon found in yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae in which cells aggregate in response to stressful environmental conditions. This occurs as the result of the interaction of flocculin proteins on the plasma membrane with mannose residues on the surface of other yeast cells which is often exploited in the brewing process to avoid expensive filtration steps. Guanidine is a chaotropic agent which reduces the stability of proteins by weakening the hydrophobic effect. Since it is believed that flocculation is dependent on protein-mannose binding interactions, if the structure of the flocculin proteins is altered by guanidine, their functionality …

Two Is Enough, But Three (Or More) Is Better: In Ai And Beyond, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Victor L. Timchenko, Yury P. Kondratenko Oct 2024

Two Is Enough, But Three (Or More) Is Better: In Ai And Beyond, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Victor L. Timchenko, Yury P. Kondratenko

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

At present, the most successful AI technique is deep learning -- the use of neural networks that consist of multiple layers. Interestingly, it is well known that neural networks with two data processing layers are sufficient -- in the sense that they can approximate any function with any given accuracy. Because of this, until reasonably recently, researchers and practitioners used such networks. However, recently it turned out, somewhat unexpectedly, that using three or more data processing layers -- i.e., using what is called deep learning -- makes the neural networks much more efficient. In this paper, on numerous examples from …

Assessing Synergy With Curcumin & 5-Fu In Breast Cancer, Sa'maira L. Davis, Zeen Ari, Andrea Florian Oct 2024

Assessing Synergy With Curcumin & 5-Fu In Breast Cancer, Sa'maira L. Davis, Zeen Ari, Andrea Florian

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the most common chemotherapy drug used to treat breast cancer. As an antimetabolite, 5-FU interferes with cancer cells' ability to replicate DNA, ultimately targeting and killing these cells prior to division. However, 5-FU alone has limitations due to its high toxicity and propensity to induce multidrug resistance. To enhance its efficacy, 5-FU was combined with curcumin, a compound derived from turmeric that has shown potential in reducing cancer cell proliferation. A single-dose response curve, a Singer assay, and western blot …

Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola And Texas Snakes: A Field To Bench Study Of Ophidiomycosis, Kenlynn L. Volz

Biology Theses

Ophidiomyces ophidiicola (Oo), the primary cause of Ophidiomycosis, is a fungal pathogen recently detected in Texas snakes. Prior to this study, there were major knowledge gaps regarding Oo growth, spread, and suitable environmental conditions. This study filled those gaps using a field to bench approach involving sampling snakes across Texas, in vitro fungal growth, and ecological niche modeling. 103 snakes were sampled across Texas in 2023 and 2024 and six cases of Oo infection were detected. Results of the growth experiment suggest that Oo prefers more stable temperatures and high humidity to a point and that there is a …

The Role Of Benthic Fluxes In Acidifying The Bottom Waters In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone Based On An Updated Water Column Biogeochemical-Seabed Diagenetic And Sediment Transport Model, Dongxiao Yin, Linlin Cui, Courtney K. Harris, Julia M. Moriarty, Hannah Beck, Kanchan Maiti

Faculty Publications

The seabed and the water column are tightly coupled in shallow coastal environments. Numerical models of seabed-water interaction provide an alternative to observational studies that require concurrent measurements in both compartments, which are hard to obtain and rarely available. Here, we present a coupled model that includes water column biogeochemistry, seabed diagenesis, sediment transport and hydrodynamics. Our model includes realistic representations of biogeochemical reactions in both seabed and water column, and fluxes at their interface. The model was built on algorithms for seabed-water exchange in the Regional Ocean Modeling System and expanded to include carbonate chemistry in seabed. The updated …

H2d: Hierarchical Heterogeneous Graph Learning Framework For Drug-Drug Interaction Prediction, Ran Zhang, Xuezhi Wang, Sheng Wang, Kunpeng Liu, Yuanchun Zhou, Pengfei Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accurately predicting Drug-Drug Interactions (DDIs) is critical to designing effective drug combination therapies. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered DDI prediction approaches have emerged as a new paradigm. However, most existing methods oversimplify the complex hierarchical structure within molecules and overlook the multi-source heterogeneous information external to molecules, limiting their modeling and predictive capabilities. To address this, we propose a Hierarchical Heterogeneous graph learning framework for DDI prediction, namely H2D. H2D employs an internal-toexternal, local-to-global hierarchical perspective, exploiting intramolecular multi-granularity structures and inter-molecular biomedical interactions to mutually enhance across hierarchical levels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate H2D’s effectiveness on three …
