Pastures In Crop Rotations Enhance Earthworm Populations In Southern Australia, John C. Buckerfield Oct 2024

Pastures In Crop Rotations Enhance Earthworm Populations In Southern Australia, John C. Buckerfield

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effects of crop rotations on earthworm populations in seasonally dry arable lands was assessed on long-term field trials at 2 sites with an annual rainfall of 450-500 mm, In cropping and sheep-grazing areas of southern Australia. Earthworm densities were substantially higher in rotations of cereals with a volunteer-pasture phase than under continuous cropping with cereals and grain legumes. The degree and frequency of soil disturbance associated with cropping has been shown to influence earthworm numbers: trial plots In which crops were sown with minimal cultivation, in alternate years, supported earthworm populations 2-3 times higher than those conventionally cultivated and …

Costs And Benefits Of Controlling Grasshoppers On Rangeland, E W. Huddleston, R Sanderson, L A. Torell, J H. Davis, J G. Watts

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Ultra low volume (ULV) aerial application of malathion at 0.58 I/ha is the common method of rangeland grasshopper control in the USA. Aircraft often are unavailable or too expensive for treating small infestations; therefore, air-assist ground equipment was adjusted 10 apply the ULV rate from a small truck. In winds of 2.2 m/sec or greater, control with the ground equipment was equivalent to that expected from aircraft. The low spray volume, low sprayer cost and use of a small truck have increased the benefit/cost ratio. Using results from this research and site-specific estimates of control costs and forage value, the …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Small plots of 3 different mixtures of Stylosallllles. scabra genotypes were established within background paddocks of either pure cv. Seca, or a mixture of 6 S. scabra genotypes including Seca, to study anthracnose development in the three mixtures under exogenous inoculum pressures arising from the two backgrounds. There was no difference in disease severity between the background paddocks after the first year. In the small plots, severity of nearest neighbours significantly influenced anthracnose severity on the partially resistant accession 55860 in the first year; this effect disappeared as the disease became more widespread throughout the plot in later years. Replacing …

Increased Resistance To Sclerotinia Crown And Stem Rot Of Alfalfa Through Recurrent Selection Of Surviving Plants In Inoculated Field Plots, M Kanbe, F Fujimoto, S Inami

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

ABSTRACT Breeding alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) for resistance to Sclerotinia crown and stem rot (SCR; causal agent Sclerotitivia trifoliorum Eriks.), which is a serious disease in Japan, was started in 1983. Increased resistance to this disease has been examined after repeated selected of surviving plants from artificially inoculated field plots to the 5th generation. The strains selected for SCR resistance showed higher resistance than Tachiwakaba, which was the main breeding material. The effectiveness of selection judged by the survival rate of progenies was low in the early selection generations but high in the later ones, It is considered that …

Biological Control Of Alfalfa Aphids In Japan Using Coccinella Septempunctata Brucki, Keiichi Takashi Oct 2024

Biological Control Of Alfalfa Aphids In Japan Using Coccinella Septempunctata Brucki, Keiichi Takashi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The oviposition, predation, and survival abilities of Coccinella septempuncrara bmcki Mulsanl (lady beetle), a natural enemy of alfalfa aphids (Acyrtllosyphon kondoi Shinji), increased as temperatures rose in laboratory tests. The second-instar larvae were released into cages in alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) fields in spring 1991. One month later, alfalfa plants in the control cages without larvae showed much lower yield; however, no damage was observed in cages in which larvae had been released. There is a strong probability that alfalfa aphids can be controlled by the timely release of lady beetle larvae in the field.

And The Male Is Not The Same As The Female, Mahmoud Ismaiil Oct 2024

And The Male Is Not The Same As The Female, Mahmoud Ismaiil

Al Jinan الجنان

In the midst of discussions about the issue of women and debates about their equality with men, whether absolute or relative, this research aims to clarify that this issue should be examined based on its reality and actual circumstances. The first to argue against absolute equality between male and female was the grandmother of the prophet Issa (Jesus Christ), (mother of Mary, wife of Imran, peace be upon them). It was shown that the Quran supports this view by mentioning her statement without refuting it, thus confirming it. The verse that mentioned this was constructed in a remarkable manner, intended …

The Overlooked First Intercostal Ligament: Does It Help To Stabilize The Weberian Apparatus?, Jake Leyhr, Tatjana Haitina, Nathan C. Bird

Faculty Publications

The Weberian apparatus is a novel hearing adaptation that facilitates increased hearing sensitivity in otophysan fishes. The apparatus is a complex system composed of modifications to anterior vertebral elements, the inner ear, and the swim bladder. A critical piece of the system that often receives minor attention are the various ligaments that bridge these three regions. The most famous of the ligaments is the interossicular ligament, which connects the Weberian ossicle chain (scaphium–intercalarium–tripus). Several other ligaments are present, including the suspensor (tripus to parapophysis 4) and the triple ligament (tripus–os suspensorium–tunica externa). Here, by combining diffusible iodine-based contrast enhancement (DICE) …

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) identifies trait-associated loci, but identifying the causal genes can be a bottleneck, due in part to slow decay of linkage disequilibrium (LD). A transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) addresses this issue by identifying gene expression–phenotype associations or integrating gene expression quantitative trait loci with GWAS results. Here, we used self-pollinated soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) as a model to evaluate the application of TWAS to the genetic dissection of traits in plant species with slow LD decay. We generated RNA sequencing data for a soybean diversity panel and identified the genetic expression regulation of 29 …

Prior studies have described the complex interplay that exists between glioma cells and neurons, however, the electrophysiological properties endogenous to tumor cells remain obscure. To address this, we employed Patch-sequencing on human glioma specimens and found that one third of patched cells in IDH mutant (IDHmut) tumors demonstrate properties of both neurons and glia by firing single, short action potentials. To define these hybrid cells (HCs) and discern if they are of tumoral origin, we developed a computational tool, Single Cell Rule Association Mining (SCRAM), to annotate each cell individually. SCRAM revealed that HCs represent tumor and non-tumor cells that …

The Impact Of Virtual Reality Exposure On Ocean Connectedness And Consumer Responses To Single-Use Packaging, Sohvi Nuojua, Sabine Pahl, Kayleigh Wyles, Richard Thompson

School of Psychology

Efforts to mitigate plastic packaging pollution include behavioural strategies aimed at shifting consumer perceptions and behaviour. Connectedness to nature, and more recently ocean connectedness, has been associated with pro-environmental intentions regarding single-use packaging. Two experimental studies were conducted to examine the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in promoting ocean connectedness and shifting consumer perceptions around packaging and its environmental qualities. To assess the influence of the VR content, in Study 1 (n = 94), participants were briefly exposed to an oceanic VR environment or an urban VR experience. Levels of ocean connectedness, both explicit and implicit, were measured after …

Spatial barcoding-based transcriptomic (ST) data require deconvolution for cellular-level downstream analysis. Here we present SDePER, a hybrid machine learning and regression method to deconvolve ST data using reference single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. SDePER tackles platform effects between ST and scRNA-seq data, ensuring a linear relationship between them while addressing sparsity and spatial correlations in cell types across capture spots. SDePER estimates cell-type proportions, enabling enhanced resolution tissue mapping by imputing cell-type compositions and gene expressions at unmeasured locations. Applications to simulated data and four real datasets showed SDePER's superior accuracy and robustness over existing methods.

The exponential increase in sequencing data calls for conceptual and computational advances to extract useful biological insights. One such advance, minimizers, allows for reducing the quantity of data handled while maintaining some of its key properties. We provide a basic introduction to minimizers, cover recent methodological developments, and review the diverse applications of minimizers to analyze genomic data, including de novo genome assembly, metagenomics, read alignment, read correction, and pangenomes. We also touch on alternative data sketching techniques including universal hitting sets, syncmers, or strobemers. Minimizers and their alternatives have rapidly become indispensable tools for handling vast amounts of data.

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Nontransformed cells form heterotypic cadherin junctions with adjacent transformed cells to inhibit tumor cell growth and motility. Transformed cells must override this form of growth control, called "contact normalization", to invade and metastasize during cancer progression. Heterocellular cadherin junctions between transformed and nontransformed cells are needed for this process. However, specific mechanisms downstream of cadherin signaling have not been clearly elucidated. Here, we utilized a β-catenin reporter construct to determine if contact normalization affects Wnt signaling in transformed cells. β-catenin driven GFP expression in Src transformed mouse embryonic cells was decreased when cultured with cadherin competent nontransformed cells compared to …

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are ionotropic glutamate receptors involved in learning and memory. NMDA receptors primarily comprise two GluN1 and two GluN2 subunits. The GluN2 subunit dictates biophysical receptor properties, including the extent of receptor activation and desensitization. GluN2A- and GluN2D-containing receptors represent two functional extremes. To uncover the conformational basis of their functional divergence, we utilize single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer to probe the extracellular domains of these receptor subtypes under resting and ligand-bound conditions. We find that the conformational profile of the GluN2 amino-terminal domain correlates with the disparate functions of GluN2A- and GluN2D-containing receptors. Changes at the pre-transmembrane …
