A Vexing Case: A Newly Discovered Autoinflammatory Disease, Ashley Edwards, Md, Caroline Mcculley, Md
Poster Presentations
Introduction: Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) Syndrome is a recently recognized adult-onset autoinflammatory disease that can lead to potentially lifethreatening multi-system inflammation with estimated prevalence of up to 1 in 5,000 males over the age of 50. Given its significant morbidity and mortality and high prevalence, increased awareness of this condition is of foremost importance. Herein we outline a case of VEXAS syndrome. Case Presentation: Mr. N is a 73-year-old male with a past medical history significant for hypertension and recent episode of uveitis who first presented to the hospital for significant unintentional weight loss, fevers, and abdominal …

Developing robust professional networks can help shape the trajectories of early career scientists. Yet, historical inequities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields make access to these networks highly variable across academic programmes, and senior academics often have little time for mentoring. Here, we illustrate the success of a virtual Laboratory Meeting Programme (LaMP). In this programme, we matched students (mentees) with a more experienced scientist (mentors) from a research group. The mentees then attended the mentors’ laboratory meetings during the academic year with two laboratory meetings specifically dedicated to the mentee’s professional development. Survey results indicate that mentees …

Species conservation and management benefit from precise understanding of natural patterns of dispersal and genetic variation. Using recent advances in indirect genetic methods applied to both adult plants and dispersed seeds, we find that the mean seed dispersal in a threatened marine foundation plant (the eelgrass Zostera marina) is approximately 100-200 m. This distance is surprisingly more similar to that of wind-dispersed terrestrial seeds (~10s to 100s of meters) than the passive dispersal of marine propagules via currents (~10s to 100s of kilometres). Because nearshore marine plants like Zostera are commonly distributed across strong selective gradients driven by bathymetry (depth) …
The Scales Project: Making Federal Court Records Free, Christopher A. Cotropia
The Scales Project: Making Federal Court Records Free, Christopher A. Cotropia
Law Faculty Publications
Federal court records have been available online for nearly a quarter century, yet they remain frustratingly inaccessible to the public. This is due to two primary barriers: (1) the federal government’s prohibitively high fees to access the records at scale and (2) the unwieldy state of the records themselves, which are mostly text documents scattered across numerous systems. Official datasets produced by the judiciary, as well as third-party data collection efforts, are incomplete, inaccurate, and similarly inaccessible to the public. The result is a de facto data blackout that leaves an entire branch of the federal government shielded from empirical …

Effect Of Pgi And Edd Gene Deletion In Escherichia Coli K12 On Production Of Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) And Copolymer Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate-Co-3-Hydroxyvalerate), Jittakan Pachimsawat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The biomaterial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a promising alternative renewable and green polymer. In this research, we incorporated deletion of phosphogluconate dehydratase (edd) and phosphoglucose isomerase (pgi) in E. coli for PHB production for the first time. As a result, the edd mutant harboring pBSKCABA-04 reached the highest PHB production of 93.0%wt with 7.55 g/L PHB concentration at 30 hours of cultivation. A specific production rate of 0.21 h-1 and maximum productivity of 0.25 g/L.h were obtained using glucose as a sole carbon source. On the other hand, deletion of pgi gene only recovered the cell growth but did not promote …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Species of the Thai indigenous apple snail genus Pila Röding, 1798 are undergoing population decline. Accordingly, their conservation is needed, but the lack of knowledge of their reproductive biology is a significant obstacle to implementing conservation measures. Therefore, this study analyzed the mating and egg-laying behavior of three of the five Thai indigenous apple snails: P. celebensis, P. pesmei, and P. virescens using continuous video recording under laboratory conditions. In addition, the egg-laying behavior of P. virescens in a seminatural habitat was observed in the rainy season of 2023. Moreover, their egg, egg mass, incubation time, and hatchling characteristics were …

Two-Stage Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion Of Rice Straw And Vegetable Residues For Biogas Production, Piyathida Khantibongse
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Renewable energy is crucial for meeting global energy needs while protecting the environment. Unlike fossil fuels, renewable sources like solar, wind, and biomass are sustainable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas production, a vital part of biomass energy, converts organic waste into clean fuel through anaerobic digestion. This process generates energy, manages waste, reduces landfill use, and cuts methane emissions, promoting sustainability and energy independence. This study investigates the two-stage thermophilic anaerobic digestion of rice straw and vegetable residues for biogas production, focusing on the effects of different pretreatment methods, optimal mixing ratios, and organic loadings. The research aims to …

Artivism (Art + Activism) has effectively raised awareness, challenged societal norms, and catalysed change through creative expression. Deepwell (2020) noted that “art engages with feminist politics” and “feminist politics reinvents art”. Deepwell's statement emphasises the mutual influence and transformative power between art and feminist politics. Art serves as a vehicle for expressing and advancing feminist ideologies, while feminist politics, in turn, reshapes artistic practices, content, and perspectives, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and diverse art discourse. Step time 99.7% …
Zero-Shot Adaptation Of Molecular Generative Adversarial Network For Specific Protein Targets, Ravipas Aphikulvanich
Zero-Shot Adaptation Of Molecular Generative Adversarial Network For Specific Protein Targets, Ravipas Aphikulvanich
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Drug discovery, crucial for identifying new potential drug candidates to treat diseases and improve health, is increasingly enhanced by deep learning approaches such as molecular generation models. However, creating drug candidates with desired properties, such as the quantitative estimate of drug-likeness (QED), synthetic accessibility (SA), and binding affinity (BA), remains a significant challenge, especially when training generative models for specific protein targets with limited pharmaceutical data. Addressing these challenges, this thesis presents Mol-Zero-GAN, a novel framework designed to generate drug candidates tailored to specific protein targets without additional data by employing zero-shot adaptation techniques and Bayesian optimization (BO). By fine-tuning …

Machine Learning Model For Skill Level Prediction Inmultiplayer Online Battle Arena, Vachirawit Pepatang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The ranked matchmaking system in MOBA games like DotA 2 matches players with similar skill levels, enhancing enjoyment, fairness, and competitiveness. However, current MOBA ranking systems calculate a player's ranking based on match outcomes rather than the player's individual performance, resulting in unfairness for players who perform better or worse than the rest of the team. Therefore, it is necessary to use multiple match data to correctly rate players' skills. Additionally, boosting leads to players using accounts that do not match their actual skill level. This causes negative experiences for other players and ultimately makes the game less enjoyable. This …

Linear Actuator Using Electromagnetic Brake For Damping Modulation In Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Zahid Ullah
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Improving the transparency of high-transmission-ratio linear actuators is essential for enhancing the safety and performance of high-force robotic systems that engage in physical contact with humans in unstructured environments. However, achieving this goal presents significant challenges. A proposed solution for active body weight support systems involves a linear actuator design, combining a high-force unit with an agile, highly back-drivable unit, using an electrorheological-fluid brake. This dissertation introduces an approach that utilizes an electromagnetic (EM) brake with a reduced rotor inertia to address these challenges. The EM brake's increased torque capacity allows for integration with a low-gear-ratio linear transmission. The mini …

Ultrafine Fully Vulcanized Natural Rubber Modified By Grafting With Methyl Methacrylate Monomer As Toughening Modifiers For Polylactic Acid, Panyawutthi Rimdusit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This work focused on toughening polylactic acid (PLA) with an abundant and sustainable bio-based filler from natural rubber. Deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) was modified by grafting with methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) and further crosslinked via e-beam irradiation and spray drying to achieve ultrafine fully vulcanized powdered natural rubber grafted with polymethylmethacrylate (UFPNR-g-PMMA) to solves in the challenges of incompatibility between the DPNR and PLA. Interestingly, UFPNR-g-PMMA showed no agglomeration between rubber particles compared to that of neat UFPNR which showed partial agglomeration after irradiation crosslinking. The flexural toughness shows a significant improvement (351%) to 11280 ± 1522 kJ/m3 compared to …

Risk Assessment Of Microplastics Contamination In Soil And Leachate From Different Ages Of Landfill, Panuwat Koonmee
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Landfills were used for the disposal of waste materials, but they could contribute to microplastic (MP) pollution. MPs waste had been released in landfills into the surrounding environment, contaminating soil and leachate collection pond. Although there were many reports that MPs could generate in leachate and soil samples from the landfill, it exists many blanks for the evolution of physical and chemical characteristics of MPs with different landfill age. In order to address the question of changing in the abundances and characteristics of MPs in different ages of landfill as potential sources of contamination and the efficacy of existing landfill …

Relationship Between Microbial And Chemical Risk After Chlorination Of Domestic Wastewater For Discharge And Reclamation, Rotsathon Plumsut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Disinfection is crucial for protecting public health during wastewater reuse. Chlorination is a widely used disinfection method, but it also leads to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which can pose environmental and health risks. Among these DBPs, haloacetonitriles (HANs), particularly dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), are of significant concern due to their toxicity. This research investigated the relationship between microbiological and chemical risks associated with chlorination in secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Bangkok. The study found that secondary wastewater (9.0-14.0 mg/L) required up to 10 times higher initial chlorine levels to achieve the same norovirus reduction levels (3-5 log …

Extraction Of Lipid And Polysaccharides From Rambutan Seed Waste By Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Subcritical Water, Kamonthip Nilmat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The rambutan processing industry generates around 37,000–42,000 tons of seed waste each year, which holds potential for sustainable utilization. This study investigates the extraction of lipids and polysaccharides from rambutan seeds using green extraction technologies. Initial analysis revealed that rambutan seeds contain lipids 30.48%, lipids, 11.9%, carbohydrates 42%, fiber 6.6%, and ash 1.72%. Lipid extraction using supercritical CO2 with ethanol (SCCO2-EtOH) achieved higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared to Soxhlet extraction. After that, the defatted rambutan seeds underwent additional processing to extract polysaccharides by subcritical water extraction (SWE) and hot water extraction (HWE). Supercritical water extraction (SWE) at ideal …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Radial Basis Function is commonly used as the decision boundaries for supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms due to its simplicity. But the symmetric property of the circular or elliptic shapes could deteriorate the fitness of the boundaries when the distribution of the data is asymmetric, especially in the data stream processing where the distribution of the data is temporal. In this thesis, we propose a new 2-dimensional data capsule structure using Yamamoto’s egg function. This structure can adjust its shape to be symmetric (i.e., circular or elliptic) or asymmetric (i.e., egg-shaped) depending on the configuration of its parameters, allowing it to …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aims to expand the application of DHP in biological systems by employing it as a biosensor for detecting caspases, a family of protease enzymes linked to diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, DHP derivatives—BZD, Fmoc-Asp-NH-DHP, and zWEHD-NH-DHP—were synthesized and tested for their potential as protease sensors. Initial screening of BZD and Fmoc-Asp-NH-DHP with common proteases, including papain and bromelain, revealed no enzymatic activity. To facilitate in vitro analysis, caspase-1 enzyme was successfully purified using an E. coli BL21(DE3)pLysS expression system. Kinetic evaluation of zWEHD-NH-DHP demonstrated a Km value of 24 µM, confirming its potential as …

Valorization Of Spent Coffee Grounds As Feedstock For Biodiesel Production Using Supercritical Fluid Technology, Wirasinee Supang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) is the solid residue generated during coffee brewing. The amount of SCGs tends to increase annually due to the growth of the coffee industry. The valorization of SCGs can reduce this huge waste by using SCGs as the feedstock for biodiesel production. This study used green technology for biodiesel production. To evaluate the potential of SCGs, the characterization of SCGs and the optimization of biodiesel production from SCGs using supercritical fluid technology were investigated. Moreover, to understand the possibility of biodiesel production from the SCGs process on an industrial scale, techno-economic analysis (TEA) was applied to …

Machine Learning For Increasing Productivity In Shrimp Hatchery, Boonyapron Kaowleg
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The quality of shrimp hatcheries directly impacts the survival and growth of shrimp during the grow-out stage, with poor hatchery conditions increasing the risk of infections and reducing overall productivity. This study explores the potential of machine learning to enhance productivity in shrimp hatcheries in Thailand, focusing on improving the accuracy of hatchery success predictions. Four machine learning models were developed and compared to predict shrimp hatchery outcomes based on historical data. Data were collected from multiple sources, which presented challenges in terms of variability, missing values, and the need for extensive pre-processing. The results showed that the random forest …
Logistic Stochastic Differential Equation Driven By Fractional Brownian Motion, Thanayuth Promkong
Logistic Stochastic Differential Equation Driven By Fractional Brownian Motion, Thanayuth Promkong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this work, the logistic stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by fractional Brownian motion (FBM) is proposed. We derive the exact solution of this SDE using the fractional Itô's formula with respect to FBM and investigate the probabilistic properties of the solution, namely the mean and the $k$-th moment, using Taylor series approximation. The simulation of sample paths using the direct formula of the exact solution of this SDE driven by FBM with various Hurst parameters, along with that of the corresponding SDE driven by standard Brownian motion, is performed to demonstrate the behaviors of these SDEs and affirm our …
