International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Wildlife strikes represent a significant threat to aviation safety and economics, as evidenced by notable incidents such as the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in 2009. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledges this growing concern, as evidenced by its report on Wildlife Strikes to Civil Aircraft in the United States from 1990 to 2019.To address the need for improved risk management, airports conduct Wildlife Hazard Assessments (WHA), a laborious process typically relying on visual identification by Qualified Airport Wildlife Biologists (QAWB). However, technological advancements, such as Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and machine learning (ML), offer promising solutions to …

Fatigue Reporting In Hellenic Skies: Attitudes, Barriers And Insights From Military, Commercial And General Aviation Pilots, Panagiotis Kioulepoglou, Katerina M. David, Vassilios Nikolaidis, Ilias Makris

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Fatigue has long been a concern in aviation, especially today, with the ever-increasing traffic volume, pilot shortage, and operations that often disrupt the body’s natural biological rhythms. Despite the implementation of sophisticated fatigue reporting schemes, aviation organizations still face challenges, as many studies indicate that pilots often encounter barriers to effectively report their fatigue. As relevant research in Greece was scarce, the main objective of this study was to explore Greek pilots' attitudes towards fatigue reporting, identify the most significant barriers, and recommend mitigation measures based on the participants' perspectives. To that end, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed …

An Exploration Of Preconception Care For People With Health Conditions Using Realist Methodology: What Works, For Whom, And In What Circumstances?, Heather Hopper Jan 2024

An Exploration Of Preconception Care For People With Health Conditions Using Realist Methodology: What Works, For Whom, And In What Circumstances?, Heather Hopper

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

Background: People living with pre-existing physical or mental health conditions are over-represented in audits and confidential enquiries regarding maternal morbidity and mortality and thus often advised to stabilise or optimise their health prior to becoming pregnant. Preconception care may include medication or behaviour change, which can be effective but not always accessed by those who need it, and there is a lack of evidence demonstrating how this can be achieved. The aim of this study was therefore to explore what form of preconception care for people living with health conditions works, for whom, how do these approaches work, and in …

Development And Validation Of A Patient-Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: The Prem-Ed 65 Study, Blair Graham Jan 2024

Development And Validation Of A Patient-Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: The Prem-Ed 65 Study, Blair Graham

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

Emergency Department (ED) care traditionally focuses on resolving single-organ pathology, emphasising rapid patient flow. As such, ED care may fall short of addressing the holistic needs of older adults, where atypical and complex presentations exacerbated by frailty, comorbidity, polypharmacy, and sensory deficits are much more prevalent than in the general population. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the effects of ED crowding and prolonged length of ED stay and suffer increased in-hospital mortality as a result.Patient experience is a central determinant of quality of care and is positively associated with improved outcomes for acute conditions, including pneumonia, asthma, and acute …

The Reconstruction Of Climate In Beringia By Analysis Of Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraether (Gdgt) Distributions Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (Hplc-Ms)., Lauren Beth Pankhurst

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The reconstruction of past environments, including temperatures, aids in the production of climate models which predict how the Earth will respond to future climatic changes that are occurring at an accelerated rate, due to global warming. High-latitude seas, including the Bering Sea, are sensitive to changes in global climate, across both glacial and interglacial timescales. Membrane lipids synthesised by archaea and bacteria are retained within the sediment and when extracted give evidence to the environmental conditions present during the organism’s lifetime. The membrane lipids are structured in a way that is chemically favourable to their environment, and calibrations derived in …

Epigenetic Regulation Of Inflammatory Pathways In Alcohol Related Hepatitis, Huey Kuan Tan Jan 2024

Epigenetic Regulation Of Inflammatory Pathways In Alcohol Related Hepatitis, Huey Kuan Tan

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Background: Alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) contributes to approximately 1% of deaths worldwide and impacts on both economy and healthcare system. Alcohol related hepatitis (AH) - phenomenon of ArLD which is characterised by overactive inflammation is associated with 30% mortality rate at 90 days. Glucocorticoids (GC) are commonly used to treat AH. However, more than 1 in 3 patients fail to respond to GC therapy. Within the GC responders, the efficacy is variable due to individual glucocorticoid resistance. Improving our comprehension of GC non-responsiveness/ resistance is critical for early stratification of these patients and development of alternative therapies. This piece of …

Federal, state, tribal, or local entities in the United States issue fish consumption advisories (FCAs) as guidance for safer consumption of locally caught fish containing contaminants. Fish consumption advisories have been developed for commonly detected compounds such as mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls. The existing national guidance does not specifically address the unique challenges associated with bioaccumulation and consumption risk related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). As a result, several states have derived their own PFAS-related consumption guidelines, many of which focus on one frequently detected PFAS, known as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). However, there can be significant variation between …

Effect Of Nutrient Reductions On Dissolved Oxygen And Ph: A Case Study Of Narragansett Bay, Hongjie Wang, Daniel L. Codiga, Heather Stoffel, Candace A. Oviatt, Kristin Huizenga, Jason Grear

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

To assess the consequences of nutrient reduction strategies on water quality under climate change, we investigated the long-term dynamics of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH in Narragansett Bay (NB), a warming urbanized estuary in Rhode Island, where nitrogen loads have declined due to extensive wastewater treatment plant upgrades. We use 15 years (January 2005-December 2019) of measurements from the Narragansett Bay Fixed Site Monitoring network. Nutrient-enhanced phytoplankton growth can increase DO in the upper water column while subsequent respiration can reduce water column DO and enhance bottom water acidification, and vice-versa. We observed significant decreases in surface DO levels, concurrent …

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been associated with toxicity in wildlife and negative health effects in humans. Decades of fire training activity at Joint Base Cape Cod (MA, USA) incorporated the use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), which resulted in long-term PFAS contamination of sediments, groundwater, and hydrologically connected surface waters. To explore the bioconcentration potential of PFAS in complex environmental mixtures, a mobile laboratory was established to evaluate the bioconcentration of PFAS from AFFF-impacted groundwater by flow-through design. Fathead minnows (n = 24) were exposed to PFAS in groundwater over a 21-day period and tissue-specific …

What Role Do Metrics Of Value Play In Translating Policy Into Action In Partnership Management Of Landscape Restoration?, Adam Guy Jan 2024

What Role Do Metrics Of Value Play In Translating Policy Into Action In Partnership Management Of Landscape Restoration?, Adam Guy

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

Accelerating decline in the quality and extent of natural habitats has led to biodiversity loss characterised as an unprecedented global crisis. The emerging explanatory paradigm is that nature has been systematically undervalued economically. The response has been a (moral) demand for environmental restoration. This call to action, driven by the hegemonic sustainability discourse, proposes interventions driven by partnerships of local and state agents, empowered to act immediately despite pervading uncertainty around appropriate restoration techniques, and unpredictable outcomes. In the context of the delegislating neoliberal state, funding is problematic, engagement in partnerships is comparatively unsuccessful, and the policy context is muddled by …

I Am A Man: Understanding Black Male Identity And Mental Health Needs, Rommel Johnson Jan 2024

I Am A Man: Understanding Black Male Identity And Mental Health Needs, Rommel Johnson

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Despite the historical and perpetual trauma, racism, discrimination, socio-economical, and socio-political disparities they have experienced in the United States, Black men have consistently forged ways to demonstrate resilience and assert their own sense of autonomy and masculinity. Nevertheless, their ecological context of living in a country that has historically sought to dehumanize them and eradicate their manhood is cumbersome to their mental wellbeing. Furthermore, the tendency by researchers to pathologize Black males obfuscates the reality of their situation in the United States, minimizing their mental needs. Understanding both the complexity of their ecological context as well as their adaptability and …

Dissertations and Theses

Phosphorescent materials are essential in bioimaging, anti-counterfeiting, and other applications due to their prolonged light emission. However, current phosphorescent materials face challenges such as complex synthesis, high costs, and instability. Carbon dots (CDs), with size less than 10 nm, are a promising alternative due to their biocompatibility, tunable optical properties, and simple synthesis. This thesis explores the synthesis of CDs using ethylenediamine (EDA) and phosphoric acid via a microwave-assisted method, followed by silica encapsulation using a modified Stöber process to form CDs@SiO2, aiming to enhance their stability and optical properties. Optical characterization showed a slight blue shift in the excitation …

Pain Anxiety And Pain Interference As Mediating Factors In The Relation Of Childhood Trauma And Fear Of Cancer Recurrence, Jennifer Kuo Jan 2024

Pain Anxiety And Pain Interference As Mediating Factors In The Relation Of Childhood Trauma And Fear Of Cancer Recurrence, Jennifer Kuo

Dissertations and Theses

Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), which is broadly defined as “the fear that cancer could return or progress in the same place or in another part of the body” (Vickberg, 2003), is often identified as an unmet need among cancer survivors, with rates ranging from 20-79% (Simard et al., 2013). Pain, another symptom commonly endorsed in cancer survivorship, is positively associated with fear of cancer recurrence (Janz et al., 2011; van den Beuken-van Everdingen et al., 2008). The Cancer Threat Interpretation Model suggests that cognitive biases exist in interpreting threat appraisal and pain coping by increasing the saliency of pain …

Near Infrared Upconversion Nanoparticles Modified With Semiconducting Polymers For Anti-Counterfeiting, Abraham Chibuikem Ikeji Jan 2024

Near Infrared Upconversion Nanoparticles Modified With Semiconducting Polymers For Anti-Counterfeiting, Abraham Chibuikem Ikeji

Dissertations and Theses

Lanthanide doped up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are excellent luminescent materials due to their ability to perform photon up-conversion from low energy to high energy using their triplet energy metastable states and because of their long-lived excited state. These properties enable multiple applications with the near infrared upconversion emission. They have been incorporated in developing technologies to help curb counterfeiting activities and other areas of research. However, they still have some limitations such as the hydrophobic nature of the UCNPs, and the absence of functional groups that can also help impact other desired features. Thus, in this work we have coated up-conversion …

Designing Fluorescent Moscs For Potential Applications In Illicit Drugs Detection, Robyn Nicole Cook

Dissertations and Theses

Illicit and hazardous substances pose a serious effect on the human body which can create longer-term issues on the mental and physical health which potentially lead to fatalities. Current methods for detecting illicit substances include analytical techniques like mass spectrometry (MS) and gas/liquid chromatography (GC/LC) which are known for accuracy and sensitivity. However, these instruments are bulky, costly, time-consuming, and require highly trained personnel. An alternative approach to overcoming these limitations is to employ nanostructured molecule-based chemical sensing technologies that are user-friendly, portable, and cost-effective with the sensitivity for detecting illicit substances. One such candidate is metal-organic super-containers (MOSCs), which …
