Analysis Of Toxic Chemical Agents And Therapeutics For Toxic Inhaled Agents’ Exposure, Khadija Bilkis Jan 2024

Analysis Of Toxic Chemical Agents And Therapeutics For Toxic Inhaled Agents’ Exposure, Khadija Bilkis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When inhaled, toxic inhalation agents (TIAs) such as cyanide (CN), ammonia and sulfur compounds (e.g. methanethiol (MeSH)) can be fatal. Many TIAs cause cellular hypoxia, cytotoxic anoxia, apnea, respiratory failure, neurodegenerative disorder, circulatory collapse, seizures, and potential death by blocking mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase. All TIA’s have the potential to be employed as chemical warfare agents, terrorist weapons, or dangerous occupational gases. Although many TIAs are potential threats, there are minimal FDA-approved treatments for these substances useful in a mass-casualty situation. Recently, cobinamide (Cbi) has come to light as a potential antidote for MeSH poisoning. However, methods for analyzing MeSH …

Association Of Genetic Polymorphisms With Clinical Characteristics And Survival Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients With Or Without Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (Masld), Theint Cho Zin Aung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The influence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of etiological factors remains to be explored. This study evaluated the distribution of PNPLA3 rs738409, TM6SF2 rs58542926, and HSD17B13 rs6834314 and overall survival of HCC patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD-HCC) and viral-related HCC (VIRAL-HCC). In this study, 564 patients with HCC were included: 254 with MASLD-HCC and 310 with VIRAL-HCC. The SNPs were determined by real-time PCR using TaqMan assays. Results: The mean ages of patients with MASLD-HCC and VIRAL-HCC were 68.4 vs. 60.9 years (p < 0.001), with a significant difference between groups. The prevalence of PNPLA3 genotype GG in MASLD-HCC was significantly higher in MASLD-HCC than in VIRAL-HCC (24.0 % vs. 15.5%; OR = 1.86; 95% CI = 1.14–3.05; p = 0.009). Similarly, the prevalence of TM6SF2 genotype TT in MASLD-HCC and VIRAL-HCC was 7.1% vs. 2.6% (OR = 3.39; 95% CI = 1.36–9.21; p = 0.003), while HSD17B13 genotype GG in the corresponding groups was 7.1% vs. 12.6% (OR = 0.53; 95 % CI = 0.27–1.01; p = 0.039). The overall median survival of MASLD-HCC was significantly shorter than the VIRAL-HCC group (42 vs. 66 months; p = 0.035). In Cox regression hazard analysis, HSD17B13 GG genotype was significantly associated with a lower mortality rate in MASLD-HCC (HR = 0.38 ; 95% CI = 0.18–0.81; p = 0.011). In contrast, PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 were not associated with overall survival in patients with MASLD-HCC or VIRAL-HCC. Conclusions: These data demonstrated that the prevalence of the studied SNPs significantly differed between MASLD-HCC and VIRAL-HCC. The HSD176B13 GG genotype was also associated with a survival benefit in Thai patients with MASLD-HCC.

Crosstalk Between Cytokines And The Diverse Pattern Of Tumor Immune Microenvironment (Time) In Egfr Mutant Advanced Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Receiving Egfr Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor, Sorawich Kuendee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Introduction: Although EGFR-TKI therapy significantly improves outcomes in patients with EGFR-mutant advanced NSCLC, inter-individual variability in treatment response remains a major challenge. One potential contributing factor is the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), which plays a critical role in tumor behavior and may influence therapeutic efficacy. However, the relationship between baseline cytokine profiles and TIME features in this patient population remains unclear. Methods: Prospective observational study involving patients with advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC receiving first-line EGFR-TKI therapy. Baseline cytokine levels were measured using the Bio-Plex Pro™ Human 27-Plex Cytokine Assay. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate CD8⁺ TILs and PD-L1 expression. The primary …

Roles Of Mtor Complex 2 Signaling In The Sphingolipid Production Of Brain Cancer Cell Lines, Nuanwan Songcharoen Jan 2024

Roles Of Mtor Complex 2 Signaling In The Sphingolipid Production Of Brain Cancer Cell Lines, Nuanwan Songcharoen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Gliomas, which include low- and high-grade types, represent a particularly aggressive form of primary brain tumor, especially glioblastoma (GBM). Metabolic reprogramming in lipid metabolism supports cell proliferation; alterations in the sphingolipid pathway, elevated glucosylceramide (GlcCer) levels through glucosylceramide synthase (GCS), promote the production of glycosphingolipids, which serve as building blocks for cancer cells. Furthermore, mTORC2, which is a kinase protein, contributes to lipid metabolism. Thus, the study aims to investigate the roles of mTORC2 signaling in lipid metabolism through lipid accumulation, which was reduced with AZD8055 treatment as the mTORC2 inhibitor. Additionally, p-AKT (S473), which is downstream of mTORC2, was …

Effects Of Water Chemistry On Interaction Between Organic Contaminants And Microplastics And Their Passage In Microfiltration Membrane, Chutiporn Inchana

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The agricultural activity is a critical source of organic contaminants and microplastics (MPs). Typically, the agricultural soil is contaminated by an abundance of MPs, leaching chemicals during weathering process, and pesticides, which subsequently end up in surface water through agricultural runoff. Polymers that are most frequently used in crop production and detected in surface water are PE and PET MPs. Bisphenol (A) and atrazine are frequently detected in surface water. Nevertheless, the fate and distribution of organic pollutants in water treatment as a consequent on MP-aided transport is constrained by little knowledge on photoaged PE and PET MPs. In this …

Interpreting Neural Operators: How Nonlinear Waves Propagate In Non-Reciprocal Solids, Jonathan Colen, Alexis Poncet, Denis Bartolo, Vincenzo Vitelli

Data Science Faculty Publications

We present a data-driven pipeline for model building that combines interpretable machine learning, hydrodynamic theories, and microscopic models. The goal is to uncover the underlying processes governing nonlinear dynamics experiments. We exemplify our method with data from microfluidic experiments where crystals of streaming droplets support the propagation of nonlinear waves absent in passive crystals. By combining physics-inspired neural networks, known as neural operators, with symbolic regression tools, we generate the solution, as well as the mathematical form, of a nonlinear dynamical system that accurately models the experimental data. Finally, we interpret this continuum model from fundamental physics principles. Informed by …

The Impact Of Iron Supplementation On The Preterm Neonatal Gut Microbiome: A Pilot Study, Matthew Van Ormer, Maranda Thompson, Melissa Thoene, Jean-Jack Riethoven, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Corrine K. Hanson, Ann Anderson-Berry

Journal Articles: Pediatrics

OBJECTIVE: The gastrointestinal microbiome in preterm infants exhibits significant influence on optimal outcomes-with dysbiosis shown to substantially increase the risk of the life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis. Iron is a vital nutrient especially during the perinatal window of rapid hemoglobin production, tissue growth, and foundational neurodevelopment. However, excess colonic iron exhibits potent oxidation capacity and alters the gut microbiome-potentially facilitating the proliferation of pathological bacterial strains. Breastfed preterm infants routinely receive iron supplementation starting 14 days after delivery and are highly vulnerable to morbidities associated with gastrointestinal dysbiosis. Therefore, we set out to determine if routine iron supplementation alters the preterm gut …

A lion roars just before a film rolls. A doughboy giggles. A giant green man laughs a hearty, "Ho, Ho, Ho." These iconic sounds are all federally registered as trademarks. They identify specific brands and distinguish their products and services from the competition. Human brains treat sounds like these as categorization tools and cognitive shortcuts—ideal trademark symbols. But what about the sounds your favorite toys or electronic devices make? Or those made by a fictional character in the latest blockbuster?

This Article tackles these issues and others. We push back against the widely-held belief that all unconventional trademarks—product designs, colors, …

The Supreme Court of Nepal was a groundbreaker when it ruled in Pant v. Nepal (2007) that people have the right to change their gender on identity documents based on “self-feelings” and “self-determination” rather than medical or other criteria; at the time, no other national apex court or government had so clearly prioritized self-determination for gender identity. Pant, however, centered “third gender” persons (neither male nor female), and now the Court is considering the case of a transgender woman, Ms. Kapali, who seeks to be identified as female on her documents and is challenging authorities that rejected her requests. …

Choline Chloride – Oxalic Acid Dihydrate Deep Eutectic Solvent Pretreatment Of Barley Straw For Production Of Cellulose Nanofibers, Dileswar Pradhan, Swarna Jaiswal, Brijesh K. Tiwari, Amit K. Jaiswal

Articles

This study investigates the production of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) from Barley straw using ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (US-DES) treatment for biomass fractionation and subsequent high-intensity ultrasonication (HIUS) for nano-fibrillation. Two deep eutectic solvents (DES), synthesized from choline chloride (ChCl) and oxalic acid dihydrate (OAD) at 1:1 and 2:1 M ratio, achieved solubilisation of over 80 % of lignin and hemicellulose under optimal conditions. The purification of these DES-treated materials resulted in cellulose with a purity >88 %. CNFs, characterized by a size of <100 nm, a polydispersity index under 0.5, and a zeta potential lower than −30 mV, were successfully isolated through a combination of wet grinding and HIUS treatment. SEM and XRD results showed the formation of a network of interconnected fibres with a Type I cellulose structure. This research highlights Barley straw's potential as a sustainable source of high-value CNF from agricultural waste.

This essay contextualizes the themes of breath and atmosphere in Nietzsche’s thinking, reading them in relation to certain contemporary crises and theories. Climate change and airborne pandemic challenge the tendency to position breath and atmosphere as life’s unthought background. Luce Irigaray’s phenomenological-feminist claim that Western philosophy has forgotten breath and James Nestor’s comprehensive investigation of medical, scientific, and disciplinary respiratory research programs provide contrasting frameworks for clarifying Nietzsche’s emphasis on breath as crucial to embodied human life. Atmospheric surround – taken in a spectrum of interrelated senses, meteorological to affective – is breath’s correlative. Nietzsche’s insistence on life’s irreducible atmospheric …

In the realm of stock market prediction and classification, the use of machine learning algorithms has gained significant attention. In this study, we explore the application of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) algorithms in predicting and classifying stock prices, specifically amidst economic policy uncertainty. Stock market fluctuations are greatly influenced by economic policies implemented by governments and central banks. These policies can create uncertainty and volatility, which in turn makes accurate predictions and classifications of stock prices more challenging. By leveraging MLP and RBF algorithms, we aim to develop models that can effectively navigate these uncertainties and …

Brain-computer interface (BCI-MI)-based wheelchair control is, in principle, an appropriate method for completely paralyzed people with a healthy brain. In a BCI-based wheelchair control system, pattern recognition in terms of preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification plays a significant role in avoiding recognition errors, which can lead to the initiation of the wrong command that will put the user in unsafe condition. Therefore, this research's goal is to create a time-domain generic pattern recognition model (GPRM) of two-class EEG-MI signals for use in a wheelchair control system. This GPRM has the advantage of having a model that is applicable to unknown …

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background: Osteochondral lesions commonly occur in the knee joints and causes detrimental effects on the quality of life. Arthroscopic drilling is the treatment option for mild to moderate lesions. However, it is debatable whether regenerated cartilage from arthroscopic drilling surgery is durable. It is speculated that induction of chondrocyte differentiation from subchondral mesenchymal stem cells is facilitated by platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is a rich source of diverse growth factors.

Aim of work: To evaluate the procedures of combined arthroscopic drilling and PRP injection intra-articularly for mild to moderate knee osteochondral lesions management.

Patients and Methods: This randomized prospective study …

Because there may be a female advantage in the inhibition and self-regulation of emotions, we hypothesized that female but not male athletes regulate emotions during sports through explicit nonverbal behaviors. Methods: All nonverbal hand movement behavior of right-handed female and male tennis athletes was recorded during competitive matches. All immediate nonverbal expressions after point losses and wins were coded by two independent blind raters applying the NEUROpsychological GESture (NEUROGES®) …
