Chemical Synthesis And Biological Application Of Sensitive Rna, Alexander T. Apostle
Chemical Synthesis And Biological Application Of Sensitive Rna, Alexander T. Apostle
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In the field of epigenetics - the dynamic collection of chemical modifications that overlay DNA/RNA - there is increasing interest in the potential for therapeutic and research-based utilization of the epitranscriptomics: those epigenetic modifications specific to RNA. Epitranscriptomics can give us a new approach to understanding and treating RNA viruses, like SARS-CoV-2. Given viruses are often found modified by human epitranscriptomic machinery, understanding how these modifications can modulate virulence is of high interest. We have shown that the N1-methyladensoine modification causes RNA synthesis termination in the SARS-CoV-2 replication complex, and thus may explain the differences in symptoms observed in individuals. …
Understanding The Controls Of Seasonal Stream Temperature And Hydrological Monitoring Of Forested Watersheds In The Western Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Eli A. Paulen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Accurately predicting stream temperature is vital to protect the environment and its most sensitive aquatic species. Tools for forecasting stream temperature rely on in situ data that affect thermal response of natural water systems. Stream and meteorological data were analyzed from the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan for the 2016-2023 water years to determine which factors affected stream temperatures. Through the application of multivariable linear regression models, our analysis identified air temperature as the primary determinant of stream temperature. However, the air-stream temperature relationship varied significantly over temporal scales, improving with increasing in time averaging. The air-stream temperature relationship was …

In Chapter 2, bulk stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C), sulfur (δ34S) and nitrogen (δ15N) were used to quantify the intra- and inter-specific resource use of six sympatric Cyprinodontiform …
Modeling Pulsatile Flows Using Truly Incompressible Finite Volume Lattice Boltzmann Model, Akshay S. Dongre
Modeling Pulsatile Flows Using Truly Incompressible Finite Volume Lattice Boltzmann Model, Akshay S. Dongre
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The present study addresses the compressibility error inherent in the standard Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and LBM’s restriction to uniform Cartesian meshes. To mitigate the compressibility error, an incompressible LBM (iLBM) model has been incorporated into the finite volume framework using a cell-centered finite volume approach, leveraging the simplicity of the LBM algorithm for irregularly shaped flow domains with unstructured meshes. Monotonic Upstream-centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL) and linear reconstruction (LR) schemes have been used to compute convective fluxes across the cell interfaces with boundary conditions implemented using the second-order accurate Non-Equilibrium Extrapolation (NEE) method.
The finite volume iLBM …

Using A "Moves To Innocence" Approach To Dissect And Debunk The Claim That Critical Race Theory Is Antisemitic, Diane Kemker
Lewis & Clark Law Review
In the United States, law and policy have most frequently reflected dominant white Christian majority interests. Critical Race Theory (CRT) offers powerful tools for understanding our history and situation, including that of American Jews, and how the social positions and interests of American Blacks and Jews, real and perceived, have intersected, sometimes aligning, sometimes diverging, and sometimes conflicting. And yet, among other charges leveled against it, Critical Race Theory is frequently accused of being antisemitic.
Intentionally or not, this charge delegitimizes and discredits CRT, and therefore advances the aims of all who oppose it for any reason, including white supremacists …

The United States border, for noncitizens, has a unique quality to it. Each time a noncitizen crosses that border, they are no longer private individuals. They can no longer choose to give up their information–instead, there is a forced exchange: data for entry. Who they are, what they are, and everything that connects them to the world is given up in exchange for a new life in a new land. Once the border is crossed, noncitizens no longer have the privacy that they may have known before. This Note first builds on scholarship theorizing that noncitizens do have a right …

Microfluidic flowmeters are a powerful and highly accurate tool, enabling precise monitoring and measurements of flows of gases and fluids in a range of applications. Here we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a whispering gallery modes flowmeter composed of a liquid crystal-filled nested capillary. Whispering gallery modes are excited by a tapered fiber coupled perpendicularly to the nested capillary. The air flowing through the capillary cools it down, which leads to a temperature-induced change of the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystals. This change in turn leads to a spectral shift of the whispering gallery modes resonances, which can be …

Exposure to hydrochloric acid (HCl) can provoke acute and chronic lung injury. Because of its extensive production for industrial use, frequent accidental exposures occur, making HCl one of the top five chemicals causing inhalation injuries. There are no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatments for HCl exposure. Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitors modulate transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling and the development of chemical-induced pulmonary fibrosis. However, little is known on the role of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) during injury and treatment with HSP90 inhibitors. We hypothesized that administration of geranylgeranyl-acetone (GGA), an HSP70 inducer, or gefitinib (GFT), an …
