Why I Will Not Stop Teaching Law Students To Think Critically About Race: The Attack On Teaching About The Role Of Race In Law, Leroy Pernell Jan 2024

Why I Will Not Stop Teaching Law Students To Think Critically About Race: The Attack On Teaching About The Role Of Race In Law, Leroy Pernell

Journal Publications

As someone who has been involved in legal education teaching for over 40 years and as someone who was drawn to legal education as an alternative to a career more directly devoted to litigation concerning racial justice, so that others might be encouraged to explore critically both what race has meant to our legal system and how we might collectively counter its negative influence, the “Stop W.O.K.E act” presents a real and present danger. Thus, in August of 2022 I agreed to be the lead named plaintiff in Pernell, et. al. v. Florida Board of Governors of the State University …

Disorganization Of Actin Within The Shafts Of Stereocilia Is A Key Difference Between Temporary And Permanent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (Nihl), Shadan Hadi Jan 2024

Disorganization Of Actin Within The Shafts Of Stereocilia Is A Key Difference Between Temporary And Permanent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (Nihl), Shadan Hadi

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

During sound stimulation, mechanosensory stereocilia of the auditory hair cell pivot around their bases, where their actin cores become denser and form rootlets protruding into the cuticular plate. It is believed that actin-based cuticular plate provides a stable mechanical support for stereocilia, while rootles are responsible for their pivotal flexibility and life-long resilience to mechanical stimuli. Not surprisingly, damage to the stereocilia bundles is known as a hallmark of permanent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Yet, despite decades of NIHL studies, it is still unknown which ultrastructural changes in the stereocilia bundles are evoked directly by mechanical overstimulation.

Here, we explored …

Differential Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Preinjury And Postinjury Born Hippocampal Neural Precursor Cells, Hannah Downing Jan 2024

Differential Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Preinjury And Postinjury Born Hippocampal Neural Precursor Cells, Hannah Downing

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

Moderate contusive traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in neuronal cell death in the cortex as well as cell death and damage in underlying structures, including the hippocampus. The hippocampus is critically involved in learning and memory and is one of two regions in the brain capable of undergoing neurogenesis throughout adulthood. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a complex sequence of events necessary for a neural progenitor cell (NPC) to differentiate into a mature granule cell neuron located in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus. TBI results in a preferential loss of immature neurons in the granule cell layer of …

Background. Glioblastoma exhibits aggressive growth and poor outcomes despite treatment, and its marked var- iability renders therapeutic design and prognostication challenging. The Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) database contains complementary clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic profiling of 206 glio- blastoma patients, providing opportunities to identify novel associations between molecular features and clinical outcomes.

Methods. Survival analyses were performed using the Logrank test, and clinical features were evaluated using Wilcoxon and chi-squared tests with q-values derived via Benjamini-Hochberg correction. Mutational analyses util- ized sample-level enrichments from whole exome sequencing data, and statistical tests were performed using the one-sided Fisher Exact test …

My Body As A Journey Accessing Pre-Colonial Identity For Healing Intergenerational Transgender Shame, Jennifer Lagman Jan 2024

My Body As A Journey Accessing Pre-Colonial Identity For Healing Intergenerational Transgender Shame, Jennifer Lagman

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

A graduate student in art therapy wrote this heuristic paper to explore shame's role as both a negative internal feeling and a cultural and social tool for evaluating and regulating behavior. As a transgender woman, she examines what it is like to be labeled as Filipino and deal with being transgender. Tiny advances have been made in the understanding of shame within the context of minority transgender self-research. Using art to expose those feelings associated with shame, balance them with affirmations, and ground them in native identity are key aspects of this process. Consequently, meeting one's shadow becomes a necessity …

Chosen Family In Lgbtq+ Community: Creating Feeling Of Safety Through Collage In Art Therapy, Zaina Berger

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

This student research study investigates how collage demonstrates feelings of safety with chosen family within the LGBTQ+ community as a minority group who has undergone much discrimination and exclusion from their biological family and society at large. Currently, within the field of art therapy, there is minimal research on LGBTQ+ community, especially in regards to kinship and family. The only research about chosen family was conducted by anthropologist, Kath Weston, in the 1990’s.The student researcher defines chosen family and discusses different alternative kinship theories and practices in the last three decades. The review discusses how queer people have created meaningful …

Art Therapy Assessment And Sense Of Safety, Sophie C. Restall Jan 2024

Art Therapy Assessment And Sense Of Safety, Sophie C. Restall

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

This study aimed to understand how artmaking experiences during assessment may influence the formation of the therapeutic alliance at the start of therapy. Rather than measuring therapeutic alliance directly, this study identified psychological safety as a vital component of the therapeutic relationship and an important topic of study via literature on attachment theory. Using a mixed-methods, repeated-measures design, this study compared artmaking experiences and feelings of psychological safety in response to two interventions––a Human Figure Drawing (HFD) assessment and an Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) assessment. Overall, qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and quantitative data from the Art-Based Intervention (ABI) questionnaire …

Evaluating The Changes In Hip Function In Expectant Mothers Before And After Delivery: Correlation Between Hip Function And Delivery Outcome, Olivia Rose Greene Jan 2024

Evaluating The Changes In Hip Function In Expectant Mothers Before And After Delivery: Correlation Between Hip Function And Delivery Outcome, Olivia Rose Greene

Open Access Master's Theses

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, approximately 800 women die daily from preventable maternal causes of death (COD). These CODs (e.g. prolonged labor, hemorrhage) are frequently connected to biomechanical limitations during childbirth. There is increased risk for complications/death during labor/delivery if pelvis/hip anatomy does not biomechanically change enough. Monitoring pelvic/hip biomechanical changes throughout pregnancy may help detect complications that arise during or prior to labor/delivery.

METHODS: Sixteen females (10 nulligravid female control participants, 6 gravid female participants) were enrolled. All participants performed walking, stair ascent, and stair descent while lower extremity optical motion capture and electromyography data (bilateral hip/knee flexors/extensors) were captured. Controls were …

The Relation Between Internalizing And Externalizing Problem Behaviors And Stem Achievement, Ashley M. Harpin Jan 2024

The Relation Between Internalizing And Externalizing Problem Behaviors And Stem Achievement, Ashley M. Harpin

Open Access Master's Theses

Internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors displayed in classroom settings have been linked to higher prevalence of academic underachievement compared to well-behaved counterparts (Van der Ende et al., 2016). While previous research has explored how these problem behaviors impact academic subjects such as reading and mathematics, fewer studies have examined associations between internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors and STEM achievement. This present study intends to fill that gap by testing relations between internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors exhibited in kindergarten and STEM achievement in the fifth grade. The data used for this study comes from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS), …

Testing The Role Of Supporting Positive Behaviors Between Child-Centered Parenting And Prosociality, Rachel Paige Lacroix Jan 2024

Testing The Role Of Supporting Positive Behaviors Between Child-Centered Parenting And Prosociality, Rachel Paige Lacroix

Open Access Master's Theses

This study explored the influence of child-centered parenting attitudes on children’s prosocial behavior. Furthermore, the role of supporting positive behaviors, a positive parenting strategy, was investigated as a possible explanation of the link in the hypothesized association. Specifically, the current study examined the following questions: (1) To what extent are child-centered mothering attitudes associated with prosocial behavior? (2) Does supporting children’s positive behaviors explain this association? The research utilized secondary, cross-sectional data capturing the parenting attitudes and maternal reports of child behavior from 255 mothers of children ages 3-5 years old. Analyses were performed using the bootstrap method to examine …

Applying Community Ecology Principles To Assess Impacts Of The Harmful Algal Genus, Pseudo-Nitzschia, On Marine Bacterioplankton And Science Communication Challenges, Julie Maurer Jan 2024

Applying Community Ecology Principles To Assess Impacts Of The Harmful Algal Genus, Pseudo-Nitzschia, On Marine Bacterioplankton And Science Communication Challenges, Julie Maurer

Open Access Master's Theses

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are projected to increase in frequency and severity with climate change, especially in coastal areas which face serious public health risks, ecological damage, and economic losses when HABs occur. The neurotoxin-producing diatom genus, Pseudo-nitzschia, is a particularly concerning HAB group due to its ability to form high-density, toxic blooms in coastal areas such as bays and estuaries, and due to high toxin variability, which has both genetic and ecological influences. Pseudo-nitzschia HABs may be an emerging issue on the U.S. east coast, due to recent anomalous and toxic blooms that occurred in 2016 and 2017. …

Distal Urogenital Anatomy And Epithelial Morphology In The Male Cajun Chorus Frog, Pseudacris Fouquettei (Anura: Hylidae), S.E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

I examined the microanatomy of the distal urogenital system in male Cajun Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris fouquettei) from a small sample (n = 6) collected in central Arkansas in March 2018 and February 2023. Specifically, my primary objectives were to investigate the following: (1) the paired Wolffian (urogenital) ducts caudally from the kidneys to their merging with the urodeum of the cloaca, (2) the structure of seminal vesicles (if present), and (3) the epithelial morphologies among the distal urogenital tract, the posterior alimentary canal, and cloaca. My histological analysis confirmed the presence of ampullae (sperm storage structures) as mid-duct expansions of …

Use Of Google Earth Streetview To Evaluate Nesting By The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon Pyrrhonota) In Lowlands Of Eastern Arkansas, With Reports Of New Records, R. Tumlison, Z. Autrey Jan 2024

Use Of Google Earth Streetview To Evaluate Nesting By The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon Pyrrhonota) In Lowlands Of Eastern Arkansas, With Reports Of New Records, R. Tumlison, Z. Autrey

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) typically construct their mud nests under the overhangs of cliffs. However, construction of concrete bridges and overpasses has provided suitable nesting structure in the last few decades. As the number of such nesting sites have increased, the breeding range also has expanded. We evaluated the use of Google Earth Streetview as a means of cheaply harvesting data regarding nesting distribution. The gourd-shaped nests of Cliff Swallows were easily discernible via available imagery, and we were able to document previously unreported nest sites of this species in 6 counties in eastern Arkansas (5 from imagery, 1 from …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We quantitatively document and describe the recent rapid expansion of the Limpkin Aramus guarauna across Anglo-America (United States and Canada). Using data downloaded from eBird (www.eBird.org), we present graphs showing the explosive growth in reports of number of individual birds and frequencies in checklists for this species in several parts of Anglo- America outside Florida (its traditional Anglo- American range). We also provide geographic progression maps to illustrate the expansion through time (2013-2023) and furnish qualitative information on foods consumed by the bird in new areas, based on a survey of 274 images uploaded by citizen scientists in eBird. Possible …

Throuples And Family Law, Philip De Sa E Silva Jan 2024

Throuples And Family Law, Philip De Sa E Silva

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

As throuples and other forms of polyamorous relationships gain visibility and acceptance, courts will have to confront the legal issues that will likely arise when a throuple forms and when it dissolves. How should courts determine child custody for three equally situated parents? How should courts divide assets among three people who have cohabitated in a marriage-like relationship? This note_comment describes some of the legal problems throuples are most likely to encounter, especially regarding child custody and division of assets. This note_comment outlines some of the ideal solutions to these problems, such as forming contracts with the help of an …

Investigating The Movements, Behaviors, And Interactions With Fisheries Of The Endangered Shortfin Mako Shark In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Colby D. Kresge Jan 2024

Investigating The Movements, Behaviors, And Interactions With Fisheries Of The Endangered Shortfin Mako Shark In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Colby D. Kresge

Open Access Master's Theses

The shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) is common in both recreational and commercial fisheries. Makos have life history characteristics that make them vulnerable to overexploitation, which combined with data gaps and management challenges has led to makos being overfished and experiencing overfishing in the Western North Atlantic (WNA). Effective management of makos is hindered by limited information on their ecology, including their movements, behaviors, as well as interactions with fisheries. I leveraged a long-term satellite telemetry database of 67 individual makos to investigate their seasonal movement patterns and to describe a suite of movement metrics that together constitute …

Using Bird Odor To Deter Mammalian Predators From Depredating Shorebird Nests, Nicole D. Defelice Jan 2024

Using Bird Odor To Deter Mammalian Predators From Depredating Shorebird Nests, Nicole D. Defelice

Open Access Master's Theses

Managing for populations of nesting piping plovers (Charadruis melodus) along the Atlantic coast has always been a challenge for state, federal, and conservation organizations. Though piping plovers face numerous threats, such as human disturbance and habitat degradation, controlling nest predators remain a challenge. In this study, we evaluated a non-lethal technique to deter mammalian predators from disturbing and predating shorebird nests by deploying chemically-extracted bird odors in areas where piping plovers historically nest, with the idea that predators will key in on the scents, realize there is no “food reward” associated with the scent, and then lose interest …

Range-Expanding Atlantic Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Abundance And Habitat Selection In An Anthropogenicallyaltered Tidal River Of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Madison Sachs

Open Access Master's Theses

Abundance of Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus is increasing in New England coastal estuaries which are well-documented blue crab habitat. Blue crab population and habitat were characterized in the anthropogenically altered Kickemuit River in Rhode Island, USA, to evaluate abundance, habitat use, and tolerances to anthropogenic impact. Crabs in dammed and undammed portions of the river were monitored for abundance, size, maturation, and sex from May to October 2023 using crab pots. Water quality and substrate data were collected to elucidate the relationships among crab population, seasonal environmental patterns, and habitat preference. It was hypothesized that benthic habitat characteristics would …

Investigating A Major 16s Rrna Folding Event In The Assembly Of The 30s Ribosomal Subunit, Brenna Levesque Jan 2024

Investigating A Major 16s Rrna Folding Event In The Assembly Of The 30s Ribosomal Subunit, Brenna Levesque

Open Access Master's Theses

The ribosome is the large macromolecular machine responsible for protein synthesis, the final step of gene expression, in all cells. It is made up of ribosomal proteins (r-proteins) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and how these many components assemble into a functionally active particle is only poorly understood. In this thesis, I have used the extremely thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus as a model system to study the role of a specific ribosomal protein, bS20, in 30S ribosomal subunit assembly. Results from these experiments suggest a potential role in ribosome function once assembly has occurred.

All ribosomes are composed of two subunits, …

Genotypic And Phenotypic Analysis Of Crassostrea Virginica Populations For Use In Aquaculture, Angel Carrasquillo Jan 2024

Genotypic And Phenotypic Analysis Of Crassostrea Virginica Populations For Use In Aquaculture, Angel Carrasquillo

Open Access Master's Theses

Increased production of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) will be needed to meet consumer demand for seafood. To meet this demand for seafood in the face of disease and climate change, selective breeding has been proposed as a solution. This study evaluated the phenotypic traits of survival, growth, yield and disease acquisition of four wild eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) populations and two commercial lines from the Northeastern US at three grow-out sites in Rhode Island. We also investigated the genetic parameters of genetic difference between subpopulations (FST), inbreeding, percent of polymorphic loci, and heterozygosity in …

Evaluation Of The Effects Of O-Glcnacylation And Hypoxia On Estradiol Production By Bovine Granulosa Cells, Lauren Decastro Jan 2024

Evaluation Of The Effects Of O-Glcnacylation And Hypoxia On Estradiol Production By Bovine Granulosa Cells, Lauren Decastro

Open Access Master's Theses

The global population is on the rise putting pressure on the agricultural industry to increase production and increase the global food supply. The dairy industry has responded to this pressure by genetically selecting for higher milk production. This increase in production has coincided with a decline in fertility among dairy cows, due in part to a loss of reproductive cyclicity. Ovarian cyclicity and, in turn, reproductive cyclicity, is dependent upon proper development of ovarian follicles and the function of the cells that comprise the follicle and support the oocyte. One of these cell types is the granulosa cell. Granulosa cells …

Investigation Of Serum Resistance In Haemophilus Parainfluenzae, Morgan J. Mcpartland

Open Access Master's Theses

Around 50% of the United States adult population suffers from some form of periodontal disease. From gingivitis to severe periodontitis, periodontal disease is associated with a plethora of chronic and systemic diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, type-two diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. Prevention of periodontitis relies on the establishment and maintenance of a resilient, eubiotic oral microbiome. A key member of the healthy oral microbiome is Haemophilus parainfluenzae (Hp). Hp is a highly prevalent and abundant oral generalist. As a health-associated commensal, understanding its relationships within the microbial community and its interactions with the host may shed light …

Investigating The Role Of Fancd2 In Neurogenesis, Bahaa M. Noori Jan 2024

Investigating The Role Of Fancd2 In Neurogenesis, Bahaa M. Noori

Open Access Master's Theses

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare human genetic disease characterized by bone marrow failure, congenital abnormalities, predisposition to cancer, accelerated aging, and premature mortality. FA is caused by mutations in any one of 23 genes. The FA proteins play a crucial role in the repair of DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs) and the maintenance of genome stability. Recently, central nervous system (CNS) defects have become increasingly observed among FA patients. These include acute or chronic loss of neurological capabilities, accumulation of white matter lesions and large pseudo-tumor lesions with vasogenic edema, and retinal vasculopathy. These neurological manifestations have been coined Fanconi …

Exercise In The Dark: The Effect Of Ambient Light Intensity On The Subjective Exercise Experience, Anthony J. Fioravanti Jan 2024

Exercise In The Dark: The Effect Of Ambient Light Intensity On The Subjective Exercise Experience, Anthony J. Fioravanti

Open Access Master's Theses

Exercise is a feasible way to reduce all-cause mortality, yet participation rates are paradoxically low. A growing trend of exercise classes in the dark has been anecdotally reported as a way to increase exercise participation by removing the element of comparison. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ambient light intensity on the subjective exercise experience. Specifically, the effect of ambient light levels on social physique anxiety and affective responses was measured during group cycling exercise in two different lighting conditions. It was hypothesized that social physique anxiety (SPA) would be lower when group cycling exercising …
