Transgender Persons: A Pastoral Approach In Catholic Institutions, James Heft S.M. Jan 2024

Transgender Persons: A Pastoral Approach In Catholic Institutions, James Heft S.M.

Intersections of Science and Faith

Father James Heft, S.M., begins with some personal examples of how, over the past few years, he's become involved in the Catholic conversation about transgender people. He then reviews current public debates about transgender care and compares and contrasts two different documents issued by Catholic dioceses on how to approach this issue.

Prophylactic Rights: Sex Work, Hiv/Aids, And Anti-Trafficking In India, Simanti Dasgupta Jan 2024

Prophylactic Rights: Sex Work, Hiv/Aids, And Anti-Trafficking In India, Simanti Dasgupta

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

Based on ethnographic work with Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee in Sonagachi, the iconic red-light district in Kolkata, Prophylactic Rights examines the emergence of labour rights at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and anti-trafficking. The primary disciplinary contribution of this book lies in bridging medical and legal anthropology through a corporeal understanding of sex work rights. It addresses the following questions: How does the labour rights narrative emerge through everyday negotiations with an epidemic and the law and what congeries of history, public health policies, legal regimes, and techniques of subjection and subversion impede and impel the labour movement? The book will …

Quantitative Trait Loci Influencing Elemental Content In Grapevine Leaves, Jesse L. Krokower Jan 2024

Quantitative Trait Loci Influencing Elemental Content In Grapevine Leaves, Jesse L. Krokower

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In grapevine, the influence of the plant’s elemental composition (the ionome) on fruit and wine quality is well established, but its genetic underpinnings have received limited scientific attention. In this study, I analyzed the leaf ionome of 131 interspecific F1 hybrid progeny plants from a cross between a Vitis rupestris Scheele (♀) and a Vitis riparia Michx (♂) parents, which were replicated in four different environments: Southwest Missouri, Central Missouri, South Dakota, and New York. I sampled leaves at three different times during the growing season at all four locations and had the concentration of 20 elements measured using ICP-MS. …

Inorganic Chemical Reasoning Skills: An Exploratory Study Into Understanding Students’ Choices And Thought Processes, Hannah P. Thompson Jan 2024

Inorganic Chemical Reasoning Skills: An Exploratory Study Into Understanding Students’ Choices And Thought Processes, Hannah P. Thompson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Predicting the products of reactions is a fundamental skill for practicing inorganic chemists. However, the current knowledge of the strategies that students use to solve them is limited. Presumably, instructors of inorganic chemistry courses give complete-the-reaction assessment items hoping that students will use their knowledge of inorganic concepts to solve them; but it is conceivable that a successful student could use heuristics or domain general problem-solving methods. I proposed this study to determine which strategies were used by students when solving complete-the-reaction tasks in inorganic chemistry, and also to make qualitative connections between strategy and accuracy. This was done in …

Changes In Visual Scanning During Stimulus Equivalence Training, Katelyn Jones Jan 2024

Changes In Visual Scanning During Stimulus Equivalence Training, Katelyn Jones

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Stimulus equivalence-based training allows learners to gain new knowledge by deriving novel relations without being directly taught. This is an important skill that some individuals, especially in special populations, have as a deficit. One possible reason individuals may struggle with stimulus equivalence is a deficit in visual experience that promotes selective attention to stimulus properties. With the advancement of technology, visual tracking and visual scanning offers a means to assess visual behavior in detail while learning stimulus associations. Identifying individual differences, and deficits in visual scanning behavior should provide researchers with better means to design interventions, promoting appropriate visual scanning …

Perfectly Disconnected: Examining The Role Of Neuroticism In The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model, Brooklynn Madison Cook Jan 2024

Perfectly Disconnected: Examining The Role Of Neuroticism In The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model, Brooklynn Madison Cook

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Numerous studies have examined the effects of various personality traits on social functioning. Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality trait that has been related to lower social connection and perceived social support. The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) suggests that perfectionism traits lead to interpersonal disconnection as those with perfectionism are inclined to intensely fear rejection due to the innate need to be accepted by others. Conflictingly, this leads to a distant presentation in social relationships, impeding interpersonal connection. While researchers have employed several variables to further examine the interpersonal nature of perfectionism, neuroticism has yet to be considered in the …

Quantum Dot Effect On Endocytic Pathways And Eisosome Organization, Onyinye Dorathy Okafor Jan 2024

Quantum Dot Effect On Endocytic Pathways And Eisosome Organization, Onyinye Dorathy Okafor

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Despite the promising applications of Quantum Dots (QDs) in the biomedical field, the long-lasting effects of QDs on the cell remain poorly understood. To comprehend the mechanisms underlying the toxic effects of QDs in yeast, I characterized defects associated with receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME) as well as on pinocytosis using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model in the presence of CdSe/ZnS QDs. My findings revealed that QDs led to an inefficient RME at the early, intermediate, and late stage of endocytic patch maturation at the endocytic site, with the prolonged lifespan of GFP-fused yeast fimbrin (Sac6-GFP), a late marker of endocytosis. The …

Experience Of Parents Attending A Perinatal Lullaby Program, Emily J. Skeers Jan 2024

Experience Of Parents Attending A Perinatal Lullaby Program, Emily J. Skeers

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Previous research performed with mother–infant dyads has demonstrated that infant–directed singing may make significant contributions to mother–infant attachment, may reduce infant stress, reduce maternal stress, assist mothers and babies with emotional regulation, improve mother–infant interactions, prevent colic, and improve infant sleep. Despite these benefit potentials, parents of today are much less likely to sing to their infants than parents of previous generations. Attendance of postnatal lullaby education programs has been associated with increased maternal singing at home and confidence in their parenting role. Perinatal lullaby programs are not represented in the literature. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of …

Sensitivity To Artificial Light And Sound In Bats Using Urban Landscapes, Aleana R. Savage Jan 2024

Sensitivity To Artificial Light And Sound In Bats Using Urban Landscapes, Aleana R. Savage

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Anthropogenic activity has prompted range shifts, extirpations, and behavioral change of native wildlife. Although humans have long altered the landscape, recent (post-1950s) increases in land use intensification has significantly impacted wildlife habitat and biodiversity. As anthropogenic developments and disturbances compromise habitat, some species have begun to exploit urban areas. While there are some commonalities among synurbic species, such as generalist diets and high fecundity, not all urban wildlife share these characteristics. As urban areas expand, it will be essential to distinguish what drives unique species to select for urban habitat. The gray bat, Myotis grisescens, is an endangered species …

The Kinetic Modulation Of Α - Synuclein Fibrillation And Toxicity By 4-Phenylbutyric Acid, Kristos Awuah Baffour Jan 2024

The Kinetic Modulation Of Α - Synuclein Fibrillation And Toxicity By 4-Phenylbutyric Acid, Kristos Awuah Baffour

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The Protein misfolding and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) into neurotoxic amyloids underlies the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). 4-Phenylbutyrate (PBA), an FDA drug approved for treating urea cycle disorders, has garnered significant attention as a potential chemical chaperone for targeting alpha-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation. Using in vitro assays, we demonstrated that PBA treatment alters the pattern of α-syn aggregation, as evidenced by reduced formation of oligomeric species and its increased susceptibility to proteolytic cleavage under the influence of PBA. Proteinase K assay, surface plasmon resonance, and Nile red studies indicate that PBA interacts with the extensive …
