The Sketchy Science Of Memory: Exploring The Benefits Of Integrating Drawing Into Learning, Eve Smith
The Sketchy Science Of Memory: Exploring The Benefits Of Integrating Drawing Into Learning, Eve Smith
Scripps Senior Theses
The drawing effect, wherein drawing enhances information recall compared to writing, has been established for words and short phrases. Previous research has emphasized the efficacy of the drawing effect, particularly for long-term memory, and previous research has shown the enjoyable nature of arts integration into education. This study investigates the applicability of the drawing effect to lecture-based information and assesses the impact of arts integration, like drawing, on learning. Participants in the experimental condition learned and utilized a visual note-taking technique known as sketchnoting, while those in the control group took standard written notes. Participants' recall was evaluated immediately and …

Hamstring And Quadriceps Activation During Single Leg Hopping At Varying Frequencies: Electromyography Analysis, Jemma Bosselman
Hamstring And Quadriceps Activation During Single Leg Hopping At Varying Frequencies: Electromyography Analysis, Jemma Bosselman
Scripps Senior Theses
Identification of knee motor control strategy is salient both for biomechanical understanding of the lower limb and for medical applications. Integral to knee function are the quadriceps and hamstring, an antagonistic muscle pair. Sub-optimal relative activation of the pair can increase injury potential. Muscle activation patterns are largely activity specific, necessitating muscle control research across various tasks. Single leg hopping has been sparsely studied, particularly for muscle activation in relation to hopping frequency. This project thus aimed to determine the effect of single leg hopping frequency on quadriceps and hamstring activation using surface electromyography (EMG), with the vastus lateralis (VL) …

Alternatives To The Squad Car: A Strategy Providing Hope For People With Mental Illness, Judy Ann Clausen, Joanmarie I. Davoli
UF Law Faculty Publications
Frontline healthcare providers and first responders have had enough of mental health care policy rooted in ideology and utopian visions instead of the practical realities of the nature of Serious Mental Illnesses (SMI). The current system of a severe shortage of mental health beds and strict criteria for administering mental health treatment in contravention of illness-induced treatment refusals has caused the real-world preventable tragedies of mass shootings, incarceration, homelessness, victimization, and death of people suffering from untreated SMI. Innovative programs and long-established protocols have been profiled by the media and examined by scholars. Momentum is brewing. Across the country, creative …

Dissertations
Problem
This study responds to the need to explore and/or propose models of leadership for Christian early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings in New Zealand (NZ). While previous studies identify love and care as a priority there is a need to define and prioritize Biblical understandings of love that may align with the principles of the national ECE framework. The study represents an alternative narrative to the neo-liberal influences which dominate areas of ECEC leadership through the marketization and standardization of children’s services nationally and globally.
Purpose of Study
Many factors contribute to the purpose of this study which …
Persistence Of Wastewater-Associated Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In River Microcosms, Aoife P. Mahaney
Persistence Of Wastewater-Associated Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In River Microcosms, Aoife P. Mahaney
Theses and Dissertations
The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) associated with wastewater is a significant environmental concern, but little is known about the persistence and proliferation of these organisms in receiving water bodies after discharge. To address this knowledge gap, we performed a series of microcosm experiments in which river water was amended with either untreated or treated wastewater, and the abundance of viable ciprofloxacin-, Bactrim-, and erythromycin-resistant bacteria was monitored for 72 hours.
Both types of wastewater amendments increased the initial abundance of ARB compared to microcosms containing only river water. The increase was greatest with untreated wastewater, but that effect decreased …

"I Call Them Supermoms": Therapists' Reflections On The Impact Of Youth Sexual Offending On Latina Mothers, Mauricio P. Yabar
Theses and Dissertations
Families of youth who have sexually offended often suffer significant collateral consequences following the discovery of the sexual offense. Samples in research with these families disproportionately consist of mothers and other female parental figures. This is rarely acknowledged in the literature, and the experiences of these mothers have not been explicitly examined. In addition, research on the experiences of these families has largely ignored factors related to race and ethnicity. This is a significant oversight considering the prevalence of systemic racism and discrimination in the United States, particularly in the systems with which these families must interact (e.g., juvenile justice …

Cardiometabolic Genomics And Pharmacogenomics In Filipino Americans: A Cross-Sectional Study, Khalifa Y. Alrajeh
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in the country, with significant ethnic disparities. Filipino Americans (FAs), the third-largest Asian subgroup in U.S., face an elevated burden of dyslipidemia, a primary modifiable risk factor for heart disease. Objectives: This community-based study addresses critical knowledge gaps by characterizing the cardiometabolic and genetic factors contributing to dyslipidemia among FAs and implications for personalized cardiovascular drug therapies, particularly statin pharmacogenomics (PGx). Methods: We characterized dyslipidemia prevalence in FAs and major ethnic subgroups using nationally representative NHANES data. We examined associations between uric acid (UA) levels and lipid profiles, …
Guns, Abortion And Courts, Sloss, David L.
Guns, Abortion And Courts, Sloss, David L.
Santa Clara Law Review
The Supreme Court decided both Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health and New York State Rifle v. Bruen in June 2022. Bruen involves gun rights and incorporation doctrine. Dobbs addresses abortion rights and substantive due process (SDP). However, the doctrinal distinction between SDP and in- corporation is untenable. Both doctrines are rooted in the Four- teenth Amendment Due Process Clause; neither finds support in the text or original understanding of the Fourteenth Amend- ment.
The Court applies the same historical test for both SDP and incorporation cases to determine which rights the Due Process Clause protects. Both doctrines address legal issues …
Habitat Selection And Breeding Ecology Of American Woodcock In Southern New England, Colby R. Slezak
Habitat Selection And Breeding Ecology Of American Woodcock In Southern New England, Colby R. Slezak
Open Access Dissertations
Declines in young forest in eastern North America during the last century have led to declines in wildlife species that inhabit and depend on this habitat for at least some portion of their annual cycle. For example, the American woodcock (Scolopax minor), a hunted upland shorebird that inhabits early successional habitats has experienced long-term (ca. 1% annually) population declines since monitoring of singing males began in 1968. For nearly a century, woodcock research has primarily focused on males because of the difficulties associated with capturing females, thus relatively little is known about females and if factors related to …

Investigation Of Fancd2 Function Utilizing A Multi-Omic Approach, Justin Blaize
Open Access Dissertations
Fanconi Anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disease characterized by congenital abnormalities, bone marrow failure, and a predisposition to cancer. FA is caused by a mutation in one of 23 genes, the protein products of which function in a pathway to repair DNA and maintain genome stability. While an important role for the FA proteins in the repair of DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs) has been established in vitro, there is still much to be learned about the function of the pathway, and the endogenous sources of ICLs in FA patients. In this work we study FANCD2, a key protein …

Deterministic And Stochastic Dynamics Of Marine Food Webs, Julian A. Hernandez S.
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Ecologists have long been concerned with understanding the behavior and evolutionary patterns exhibited within complex ecological communities. Under- standing the delicate balance that sustains ecosystems is crucial in determining how these communities evolve over time. Recently, researchers have combined deterministic Lotka-Volterra dynamics with different types of synthetic food webs (cascade, niche and generalized cascade models), and have analyzed the mechanisms behind primary extinction events and the ensuing secondary extinction cascade. These studies also enabled the exploration of the complex interplay of species loss to explain how food web structure influences primary and secondary extinction. We have extended these ideas to …

Discovery Of Dna Aptamers As Probes For Detecting Ranavirus Mcp, Corbin Hudson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Global amphibian populations have been declining since the late 20th century; one of the most significant contributors to these declines is a genus of viral pathogens known as Ranavirus (Rv). Frog virus 3 is one of these viral agents and is currently found affecting frog populations throughout NJ, MD, PA, DE, and VA. While Frog virus 3 is most known for afflicting frogs, the Ranavirus genus can also infect bony fish species as well as reptiles, allowing for a wide vector of transmission and making its spread a danger both locally and globally. In the absence of a cure, it …
Values Integration And The Professional Counselor, Rebecca Randall
Values Integration And The Professional Counselor, Rebecca Randall
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This qualitative study, informed by narrative inquiry, examined how counselors described the interplay of values in professional practice. Participant narratives highlighted the challenges they experience in the process of values integration, defined as counselors’ awareness and management of personal values in counseling processes. Participants often made value judgments that occurred rapidly and beneath awareness and only became aware as a result of discordance in the counseling relationship. They further struggled in skillfully working through values conflicts. These findings reveal that values integration is a developmental process that challenges counselors beyond the training years and thus requires an infrastructure that supports …
Circadian Rhythmicity Of Mood : An Exploratory Study, Mara Ashley Cohen
Circadian Rhythmicity Of Mood : An Exploratory Study, Mara Ashley Cohen
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Human circadian rhythms are widely observed to fluctuate across the 24-hour circadian period, spanning cognitive, behavioral, and physiological domains. Circadian rhythm (CR) systems, particularly the sleep-wake cycle, are widely studied. Dysregulation of the sleep-wake cycle, common in shift work and mood disorders, diminishes mood regulation, resulting in increased negative mood or inappropriate mood responses. Although emotions have been investigated in the context of circadian variability in the sleep-wake cycle, circadian effects on emotional state per se have infrequently been examined. Previous studies suggest an increase in Positive Affect (PA) and decrease in Negative Affect (NA) as the day progresses, while …
Dynamic Genomic Evolution Via Active Ltr Transposable Elements In Maize, Taylor Isles
Dynamic Genomic Evolution Via Active Ltr Transposable Elements In Maize, Taylor Isles
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Long terminal repeats (LTR) retrotransposons, found across eukaryotes, are transposable elements which can copy and insert themselves into other loci within a genome. These transposable elements are similar to retroviruses in that they rely on reverse transcriptase to “copy and paste” themselves elsewhere in the genome. From the RNA transcript they are able to use reverse transcriptase to make another DNA copy of themselves. This initially gave them the moniker, selfish genes. However, in the decades after the discovery of reverse transcriptase and LTR retrotransposons, it became known that non-genic DNA could have other functions. LTR retrotransposons are sources of …

Assessing The Feasibility Of Seaweed Farm-Offshore Wind Co-Location In New Jersey, Brianna Delaney Reynolds
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
New Jersey’s offshore wind energy sector may provide an opportunity to advance the seaweed farming industry through ocean multi-use. Yet, opportunities, constraints, and knowledge gaps for seaweed farm-offshore wind co-location remain largely uninvestigated. Here, I determine the suitability of native seaweed species for offshore cultivation in New Jersey and conduct a quick scoping review (QSR) to assess the knowledge base surrounding seaweed farm-offshore wind multi-use. Saccharina latissima and Fucus vesiculosus were identified as native species with commercial value for cultivation in New Jersey. Yet, offshore waters at the location of a wind development site had insufficient nutrients to meet the …

Plasmids are mobile genetic elements known to carry secondary metabolic genes that affect the fitness and survival of microbes in the environment. Well-studied cases of plasmidencoded secondary metabolic genes in marine habitats include toxin/antitoxin and antibiotic biosynthesis/resistance genes. Here, we examine metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the permanently-stratified water column of the Cariaco Basin for integrated plasmids that encode biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites (smBGCs). We identify 16 plasmid-borne smBGCs in MAGs associated primarily with Planctomycetota and Pseudomonadota that encode terpenesynthesizing genes, and genes for production of ribosomal and non-ribosomal peptides. These identified genes encode for secondary metabolites that are …

Three Essays On Environmental Risk And Policy, Samuel Owens
Three Essays On Environmental Risk And Policy, Samuel Owens
Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration
This dissertation comprises three essays that investigate different facets of environmental hazards and their implications for policy and governance. While each essay examines a different topic area, they are all linked by examining how entities respond to incentives at the intersection of environmental risk and public policy. Each chapter informs a distinct literature within environmental policy and utilizes different methodologies to examine largely unexplored research questions.
In the first essay, I examine how individuals respond to the low-visibility, long-term environmental risk presented by radon. I employ radon zone data from the Kentucky Geological Survey and home information from Zillow to …

Recent literature supports a prominent role for astrocytes in regulation of drug-seeking behaviors. The dorsal striatum, specifically, is known to play a role in reward processing with neuronal activity that can be influenced by astrocyte Ca2+. However, the manner in which Ca2+ in dorsal striatum astrocytes impacts neuronal signaling after exposure to self-administered cocaine remains unclear. We addressed this question following over-expression of the Ca2+ extrusion pump, hPMCA2w/b, in dorsal striatum astrocytes and the Ca2+ indicator, GCaMP6f, in dorsal striatum neurons of rats that were trained to self-administer cocaine. Following extinction of cocaine-seeking behavior, the rats over-expressing hMPCA2w/b showed a …

Elucidating The Role Of Fatty Acid Synthase In Apc-Driven Colorectal Cancer, Courtney O. Kelson
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths. Currently, there is a growing incidence rate for individuals aged 20-49 years. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk of this cancer. Early detection of CRC allows for the most effective treatment option in which surgical resection of the primary tumor occurs along with adjuvant chemotherapy. This therapeutic approach contributes to 5-year survival rate of 91%. However, surgical procedures and chemotherapy struggles against metastatic and relapsed CRC resulting in 5-year survival rate of 14%. Inefficacious treatments for relapsed and metastatic diseases emphasizes the need for more …
