Revues de littérature, synthèses de connaissances

Introduction

Our objective was to identify published, peer-reviewed, epidemiological studies that estimated associations between the risk of developing or dying from malignant breast cancer and past exposure to selected organic solvents with reactive metabolites, to delineate the methods used and to synthesize the results.

Content

We undertook a structured review of case-control and cohort studies used to investigate breast cancer risk and exposure to selected organic solvents that produce reactive metabolites in the body. We used SCOPUS, MEDLINE (Ovid) and Web of Science databases from 1966 to December 31, 2023 to identify epidemiological studies that estimated associations between the risk …

Raptors exert top-down influences on ecosystems via their effects on prey population dynamics and community composition. Most raptors are sympatric with other predators, thus complicating our understanding of their relative influence in these systems. Estimates of kill rates and prey biomass recycling have been used as predation metrics that allow quantitative comparison among species and assessment of the relative role of single species within complex food webs. Few studies have produced findings of kill rates or prey biomass recycling for raptors. We used a supervised machine learning algorithm to behaviourally classify high resolution accelerometer informed GPS locations of tagged adult …

Intuition And The Apophatic Way Of Unknowing: A Fruitful Dialogue Between Science And Religion, Jeffrey P. Bishop Jan 2024

Intuition And The Apophatic Way Of Unknowing: A Fruitful Dialogue Between Science And Religion, Jeffrey P. Bishop

Intersections of Science and Faith

Apophatic theology is a form of thinking and religious practice that attempts to approach God, the Divine, by negation, to speak only in terms of what may not be said about the perfect goodness that is God. This presentation will explore how this line of thought can inform and illuminate current scientific thinking.

Penicillin And The Pope: Antimicrobial Resistance In Light Of Laudato Si’, Fred C. Tenover

Intersections of Science and Faith

Increasing antimicrobial resistance—that is the ability of bacteria to avoid the killing action of antibiotics—has become a global crisis, making some infections untreatable. Antibiotics, which are a natural resource, are frequently used indiscriminately, which increases the likelihood of resistance. Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’ calls to use resources wisely and justly; this should include prudent use of antibiotics.

Design, Synthesis, Molecular Docking, And Molecular Dynamic Studies Of Novel Quinazoline Derivatives As Phosphodiesterase 7 Inhibitors, Marwa M. Safar Prof. Dr.

Pharmacy

Introduction: Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7) is a high-affinity cyclic AMP (cAMP)- specific PDE that is expressed in immune and proinflammatory cells. In this work, we explore the possibility that selective small molecule inhibitors of this enzyme family could provide a novel approach to alleviate the inflammation that is associated with many inflammatory diseases. Methods: A series of novel substituted 4-hydrazinoquinazoline derivatives and fused triazoloquinazolines were designed, synthesized, and evaluated in vitro for their PDE7A inhibition activities, in comparison with Theophylline, a non-selective PDE inhibitor, and BRL50481, a selective PDE7A inhibitor. This series of novel quinazoline derivatives were synthesized via multi-step reactions. …

Exploring The Role Of Uncharacterized Gene Yjbe In Bacterial Persistence, Isaac Kovash Jan 2024

Exploring The Role Of Uncharacterized Gene Yjbe In Bacterial Persistence, Isaac Kovash

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Antibiotic resistance has become a major global health concern as it decreases antibiotic efficacy and continues to emerge each year. A major driving force behind antibiotic resistance is a small subset of the bacterial population (known as persisters) that enter a metabolically repressed state in response to antibiotics, allowing them to survive long-term antibiotic treatments. After the antibiotic treatment period is over persisters can reestablish and reoccur the infection. However, the central mechanism behind persister formation remains debated and unclear. Our previous transcriptomic analysis of the persister population of Escherichia coli Dh5αZ1 showed that several genes are upregulated during persister …

Where Does The Church Stand In Today’S Mental Health Landscape?, Noah T. Mursu Jan 2024

Where Does The Church Stand In Today’S Mental Health Landscape?, Noah T. Mursu

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Religious involvement in care for those living with mental illness has been going on for centuries, and perspectives on it have changed throughout the years. This literature review evaluates the place of religious groups, mainly Christian churches, in today's mental health situation by considering past and present involvement. It incorporates sources regarding different eras of mental hospital reform, modern perspectives of mental health clinicians and clergy, and the current gaps in mental health support among a variety of groups, including veterans, African Americans, and people in developing countries. This review then considers potential future involvement, especially considering how these gaps …

Neuropathic pain is a critical source of comorbidity following spinal cord injury (SCI) that can be exacerbated by immune-mediated pathologies in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In this article, we investigate whether drug-free, biodegradable, poly(lactide- co -glycolide) (PLG) nanoparticle treatment mitigates the development of post-SCI neuropathic pain in female mice. Our results show that acute treatment with PLG nanoparticles following thoracic SCI significantly reduces tactile and cold hypersensitivity scores in a durable fashion. Nanoparticles primarily reduce peripheral immune-mediated mechanisms of neuropathic pain, including neuropathic pain-associated gene transcript frequency, transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 nociceptor expression, and MCP-1 (CCL2) chemokine …

Enhancing Organisational Performance Through Patient-Focused Learning Excellence In The Biopharmaceutical Industry, Lori Richter Jan 2024

Enhancing Organisational Performance Through Patient-Focused Learning Excellence In The Biopharmaceutical Industry, Lori Richter

Dissertations

Drug shortages, quality defects and challenges regarding innovation within the biopharmaceutical industry pose significant risks to patient safety and organisational performance. These problems persist despite the many scientific, technological and economic advances over the past several years in a well-funded, high-revenue industry operated by highly qualified personnel. Evidence suggests that the industry has yet to fully realise the potential for building organisational capabilities to enable learning from mistakes to enhance performance outcomes. This research study explored how biopharmaceutical companies can learn from their mistakes and embrace a culture of learning in order to reduce quality defects and drug shortages by …

Structuring Extra-Classroom Pedagogical Partnership To Support Truth Telling For Equity And Inclusion: Recommendations For Practice, Alison Cook-Sather, Elena Marcovici Jan 2024

Structuring Extra-Classroom Pedagogical Partnership To Support Truth Telling For Equity And Inclusion: Recommendations For Practice, Alison Cook-Sather, Elena Marcovici

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Equity and inclusion efforts are undermined by individual and institutional inattention to the lived experiences of an increasingly diverse college student population. Extra-classroom, student–faculty/staff pedagogical partnerships can foster truth telling about and the development of practices that support diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice. In this practice brief, we offer recommendations for (1) developing pedagogical partnership projects and programs, (2) dedicating regular meetings to supporting student partners in sharing the truths of their lived experiences, (3) scaffolding faculty and staff partners’ listening to and acting on the truths student partners tell, and (4) sharing truths more widely.

Utilizing Plasmid Dna Hydrogels For Cell-Free Protein Production, Tinotenda Duche

Honors Theses and Capstones

Proteins play an important role in various biological processes and are crucial components in biomedical research and therapeutics. Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) has provided a valuable approach for rapid protein production outside living cells, involving both transcription and translation processes. However, traditional CFPS methods encounter challenges such as high cost, relatively low yields, and scalability. The end goal of our project is to incorporate our template into the hydrogel. In this work, we report advancements towards that by trying to optimize our solution of CFPS. Unfortunately, the standards for pDNA hydrogel synthesis are not met by the pDNA production and …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Juvenile Homarus Americanus Feeding Behavior, Sophia Roy Jan 2024

Investigation Of The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Juvenile Homarus Americanus Feeding Behavior, Sophia Roy

Honors Theses and Capstones

Climate change has led to increased CO2 absorption by ocean surface waters, resulting in decreased pH levels, a phenomenon known as ocean acidification (OA). A primary class of marine organism behavior is impacted by OA, in particular, olfactory-mediated behaviors related to foraging and feeding success. However, the biological mechanisms responsible for the documented impairment of foraging and feeding-related behaviors remains in question. We find that juvenile American lobsters (H. americanus) exhibit significantly faster rates of total feeding times in response to short-term low pH exposure. However, total search time and total handling time were not affected by pH when examined …

How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden Jan 2024

How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden

Honors Theses and Capstones

During the 20th century, the theme of World's Fairs in the United States broke away from previous World Exposition traditions and centered around concepts of progress and the future. This thesis investigates the conception of the future and the evolution of the World's Fair themes during times of economic and political turmoil at the Chicago 1933–1934, New York 1939–1940, and Seattle 1962 World’s Fairs. In each instance, the fair’s organizers felt the need to respond to world events, which caused them to shift their initial focus from a local attempt to increase prosperity, to a national commentary on global conditions.

Targeting Bcl6 Transcription Factor In Ovarian Cancer, Allison F. Mackey Jan 2024

Targeting Bcl6 Transcription Factor In Ovarian Cancer, Allison F. Mackey

Honors Theses and Capstones

Ovarian cancer is the most fatal female reproductive cancer, with most cases being diagnosed in late stages, after metastasis has become widespread. This can make ovarian cancer challenging to successfully treat, especially with its high rate of recurrence. The use of small molecule compounds to inhibit overexpressed transcription factors may provide an effective method for treatment. BCL6 is a transcription factor that is abnormally overexpressed in patients with recurring and late-stage ovarian cancer and has been implicated in proliferation and metastatic behavior. The identification of multiple potential inhibitors of BCL6 could improve chances for the further testing of these compounds, …

The Ubiquity Of Time In Latent-Cause Inference, Dan-Mircea Mirea, Yeon Soon Shin, Sarah Dubrow, Yael Niv

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Humans have an outstanding ability to generalize from past experiences, which requires parsing continuously experienced events into discrete, coherent units, and relating them to similar past experiences. Time is a key element in this process; however, how temporal information is used in generalization remains unclear. Latent-cause inference provides a Bayesian framework for clustering experiences, by building a world model in which related experiences are generated by a shared cause. Here we examine how temporal information is used in latent-cause inference, using a novel task in which participants see ‘microbe’ stimuli and explicitly report the latent cause (‘strain’) they infer for each …

Minerals are uniquely tied to colonialism, labour, and environment; however, those relationships have traditionally not been described in mineral catalogues – an omission that limits curators’ ability to account for mineral histories. This paper re-imagines mineral cataloguing practices to restore historical, cultural, and environmental contexts that were stripped away. We describe the roles of citations; linked data; provenience and provenance histories; non-standardized and ‘unapproved’ nomenclatures; positionality; and the need to label archival silences. We examine the risks and practical limitations that arise in attempting to turn this colonial tool against itself. In discussing these issues, we contribute to ongoing dialogues …

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier Jan 2024

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines Viennese Japonismus and modern allegory in the work of Gustav Klimt. One of the paradoxical ambitions of Vienna’s early visual modernists was the creation of a new art that would, nevertheless, revive the essence of tradition, creating a collective aesthetic that crossed national and historical boundaries. Klimt and his close collaborators, like Josef Hoffmann, and artists engaged in the broader context of central Europe, like Emil Orlik, believed that Japanese art presented a viable path toward a universal, modern visual language. This conception arose from layers of exoticism, primitivism, Orientalism, and genuine encounter with old and new …

“Trying Your Best In That Moment With That Person”: Maintaining Feelings Of Efficacy And Relevance In The Therapeutic Relationship With Community Mental Health Clients Experiencing Psychosis, Carolyn Solo

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Community mental health clients who experience psychosis, particularly Black and Latinx clients, are subject to numerous barriers to competent clinical care. The fundamental challenges of community mental health settings can be detrimental to clinicians’ belief that they can be effective while providing care to clients with psychosis in alignment with the common factors of therapeutic treatment and the principles of trauma-informed care. This dissertation proposes a grounded theory based on 16 participant interviews with community mental health clinicians in Philadelphia who have worked in outpatient settings with clients with psychosis. Using the frameworks of self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), the common …

Development Of A Ni-Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Mizoroki- Heck Reaction For The Synthesis Of Phenanthridinone Derivatives, Diana Rachii

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The Birch reduction-alkylation coupled to the desymmetrizing Mizoroki-Heck reaction is a novel synthetic tool to form potentially bioactive phenanthridinone analogs from inexpensive and easily available starting materials. This work describes a rare example of the direct replacement of palladium for nickel in our previously reported enantioselective intramolecular Heck reaction. A Ni-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction has been developed to transform symmetrical 1,4- cyclohexadienes with attached aryl halides to phenanthridinone analogs containing quaternary stereocenters. Moreover, this approach provides direct access to six-member ring heterocyclic systems bearing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters, which have been much more challenging to form enantioselectively with nickel-catalyzed Heck …

Multibillion-Dollar Tax Questions, James Alm, Jay A. Soled, Kathleen Delaney Thomas Jan 2024

Multibillion-Dollar Tax Questions, James Alm, Jay A. Soled, Kathleen Delaney Thomas

Faculty Publications

Tax compliance in the United States historically hovers in the 80 percent range, costing the nation approximately half a trillion dollars annually in uncollected tax revenue. To foster greater tax compliance, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) should employ whatever tools are at its disposal. Standard deterrence theory argues that increasing the audit rate and imposing stiffer penalties would foster greater tax compliance. There are political headwinds, however, that strongly suggest that these approaches are not currently viable. Instead, there is a low-cost method that could yield greater tax compliance. Drawing on recent and compelling social science research, the IRS should …

Natural Objects And Testamentary Freedom, Kevin Bennardo Jan 2024

Natural Objects And Testamentary Freedom, Kevin Bennardo

Faculty Publications

This Article explores the tension between inheritance law’s designation of certain beneficiaries as natural and unnatural for certain purposes and its organizing principle of testamentary freedom. Either inheritance law is primarily concerned with effectuating the preference of the decedent or it is primarily concerned with safeguarding the economic health of the family. It cannot be both. Ultimately, one of these two must yield. Either we acknowledge that decedents don’t have the level of dispositional freedom that is advertised or we change the law’s designation of some devises as natural and other as unnatural.

This Article proposes a pathway to relieve …

Structure-Function Relationship Of Oat Flour Fractions When Blended With Wheat Flour: Instrumental And Nutritional Quality Characterization Of Resulting Breads, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Milica Pojić, Ciara Mcdonagh, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Shivani Pathania Jan 2024

Structure-Function Relationship Of Oat Flour Fractions When Blended With Wheat Flour: Instrumental And Nutritional Quality Characterization Of Resulting Breads, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Milica Pojić, Ciara Mcdonagh, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Shivani Pathania

Articles

Abstract: The present work investigated the structure-function relationship of dry fractionated oat flour (DFOF) as a techno-functional ingredient using bread as a model system. Mechanically, DFOF fractions (F), that is, F1: <224 µm, F2: 250–280 µm, F3: 280–500 µm, F4: 500–600 µm, and whole oat flour (F5) were blended with white wheat flour at 10%, 30%, and 50% substitution levels for bread making. The blended flours, doughs, and bread samples were assessed for their techno-functional, nutritional, and structural characteristics. The results of Mixolab and the Rapid Visco Analyzer show that the 50% substituted F3 fraction exhibits the highest water absorption properties (69.53%), whereas the 50% F1 fraction exhibits the highest peak viscosity of the past slurry. Analysis of bread samples revealed a lower particle size of DFOF fractions and higher supplementation levels, increased β-glucan levels (0.13–1.29 g/100 bread (db), reduced fermentable monosaccharides, that is, glucose (1.44–0.33 g/100 g), and fructose (1.06–0.28 g/100 g). The effect of particle size surpassed the substitution level effect on bread volume reduction. The lowest hardness value for F1 is 10%, and the highest value for F2 is 50%. The total number of cells in the bread slice decreased from the control to the F4 fraction (50%). Multi-criteria analysis indicated that DFOF fractions produced breads with similar structure and higher nutritional value developed from white wheat flour. Practical Application: The use of mechanically fractionated oat flours fractions in white wheat flour breads can improve the nutritional profile without affecting the physical properties of the bread product. Based on the oat flour fractions, bakers and food processing companies can tailor the bread formulations for high β-glucan, high fiber, and low reduced sugar claims.
