Repairing The Family Law Attorney, Daniel F. Bousquet
Repairing The Family Law Attorney, Daniel F. Bousquet
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Professor Clare Huntington’s scholarship advances a theoretical “Reparative Model” of family law that seeks to deemphasize adversarial decision-making and decrease litigation. Building off that scholarship, this Article considers the family law attorney’s role and argues that the current Model Rules of Professional Conduct already support—and should be understood to require—a “reparative” advisory role for the family law attorney. Put simply, the harsh realities of the adversarial court system demand that family law attorneys presumptively provide information on litigation’s harmful impacts on families and children and encourage the possibility of pursuing goals via means less detrimental than litigation. To encourage a …

Løvetann/Tvntēli'on/Beàrnan-Brìde/Paardebloem: Decolonization Through Heritage, Brooke Howton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Through their lifelong passion for genealogy, Brooke “Uisce'' Howton researches a way to dismantle White supremacy and colonization through analyzing and reconnecting to their heritage. This involves learning about the nature of White supremacy, which is ever present in American society, and gaining a better understanding of what the history of racial formations in the United States looked like. Through this new lens, she revisits old traditions that she had been able to experience, mostly through her maternal family; all while learning new traditions that she has been unable to experience due to the adoption of her paternal grandmother, mystery …

Assembly And Analysis Of Space Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Model Organisms Towards The Treatment Of Water System Biofilms, Yo-Ann VéLez Justiniano
Dissertations
Space exploration imposes unique challenges on the human body and engineered systems alike. One such challenge is the control of microbial life, specifically biofilms, within the water processor assembly of the International Space Station (ISS). This investigation aimed to determine the feasibility of using an innovative bioremediation approach to mitigate biofilm growth in the water processor assembly. This approach entails the dissemination of a desired anti-biofilm gene across the microbial population of the water processor assembly through horizontal gene transfer via conjugation. To ascertain the viability of this method, the research was divided into two primary focuses. The first part …

The Structural Basis Of Inflammation : Computational Characterization Of Molecular Mechanisms, Sara W. Jackson
Dissertations
Computational tools are useful in the interpretation and analysis of experimental data. In the world of structural biophysics, computational tools go a bit further: they can simulate atomic motions and molecular interactions based on experimentally-determined biomolecule structures, therein describing natural phenomena, and inspiring the formulation of new hypotheses. In this work, computational structural biology tools are used to answer questions about molecules of inflammatory importance. Quantum chemistry computational tools are used to determine the electronic structure of sesamin, a component of many diets which may be a modulator of an enzyme involved in the metabolism of inflammation mediators. Virtual docking …
The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells
The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells
English Honors Papers
This thesis interrogates the imbrication between negative subjectivity and the fiction writing of Gayl Jones. In doing so, this work reimagines conceptions of intimate and interpersonal love, community, and retributive violence in the face of conditional (anti)Blackness. Through an engagement with contemporary scholars of Black Studies and with the help of the abundant archive of Black music, this project aims to prioritize, reproduce, and heed to Black Artistic registers of feeling that embrace duress, destruction, and madness. Through her literary performance, Jones reproduces and fabulates moments of Black social life that expand and simultaneously shatter our conception of a given …
The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden
The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
This Article critically examines the rise of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in environmental policy and the profound disconnect that has persisted between the actual practice of CBA and its normative grounding. Although CBA is now synonymous with rational decision-making in federal agencies, this has not always been the case. Views about CBA have evolved from bipartisan rejection in the 1970s, to partisan division (Republicans for, Democrats against) during the Reagan-Bush years, to a broad embrace of CBA in the mid-1990s, when centrist legal scholars were instrumental in crafting a new defense of CBA based on a mix of welfare economics and …

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
The fourth-century church complex at ‘Ain el-Gedida, in the Dakhleh Oasis, provides a striking case study for the integration of kitchen work into social and religious space in late antiquity. Its unique features – both sociological and archaeological – reflect a dynamic, rough-and-tumble integration that both protects the sacred space of the nave and centres the productive labour of cooking. This article analyses the anteroom/kitchen B6 from the perspectives of space syntax, the communicative landscape of labour, and the sociology of graffiti. While it may have been designed as a transitional zone or service auxiliary for the primary public spaces …

Serine Proteinase Inhibitors From Nicotiana Benthamiana, A Nonpreferred Host Plant, Inhibit The Growth Of Myzus Persicae (Green Peach Aphid), Honglin Feng, Georg Jander
Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) is a severe agricultural crop pest that has developed resistance to most current control methods, requiring the urgent development of novel strategies. Plant proteinase inhibitors (PINs) are small proteins that protect plants against pathogens and/or herbivores, likely by preventing efficient protein digestion. RESULTS: We identified 67 protease genes in the transcriptomes of three M. persicae lineages (USDA-Red, G002 and G006). Comparison of gene expression levels in aphid guts and whole aphids showed that several proteases, including a highly expressed serine protease, are significantly overexpressed in the guts. Furthermore, we identified three genes encoding …

Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University
Hypoxia and cold temperatures create unique physiological challenges for high-altitude organisms that can vary depending on lifestyle. While nearly all studies of air-breathing animals at high altitude are from terrestrial species, species that breath-hold dive underwater at high altitude encounter a very different set of selective pressures influencing their phenotype. The goal of this publication is to highlight the changes in O2 transport and utilization in high-altitude diving birds relative to divers at sea level, and the extent to which these changes are qualitatively distinct from phenotypic changes in non-diving species at high altitude. For example, while high capacities for …
Sand, Science, And The Civil War: Sedimentary Geology And Combat, Erin Stewart Mauldin
Sand, Science, And The Civil War: Sedimentary Geology And Combat, Erin Stewart Mauldin
Civil War Book Review
Scott Hippensteel’s Sand, Science, and the Civil War fills
a critical gap in several different literatures on America’s Civil War. Across 20 brief chapters, Hippensteel demonstrates how sedimentary geology affected military operations on a range of scales, from the continental creation of mountains that acted as offensive obstacles to the weathering of sand into an effective force multiplier for coastal fortifications. Hippensteel is not a historian by training—he is an associate professor of earth sciences—and perhaps for that reason, Sand, Science, and the Civil War does not follow the expected structure or chronology of a typical history monograph. Nevertheless, Hippensteel’s …

A Pharmacological Approach To Investigating Effector Translocation In Rice-Magnaporthe Oryzae Interactions, Ely Oliveira-Garcia, Allison Jane Hamilton
Faculty Publications
Fungal pathogens deliver effector proteins into living plant cells to suppress plant immunity and control plant processes that are needed for infection. During plant infection, the devastating rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, forms the specialized biotrophic interfacial complex (BIC), which is essential for effector translocation. Cytoplasmic effectors are first focally secreted into BICs, and subsequently packaged into dynamic membranous effector compartments (MECs), then translocated via clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) into the host cytoplasm. This study demonstrates that clathrin-heavy chain inhibitors endosidin-9 (ES9) and endosidin-9–17 (ES9–17) blocked the internalization of the fluorescently labeled effectors Bas1 and Pwl2 in rice cells, leading to …

Biology, Ecology, And Management Of Redbanded Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), Olabimpe O. Okosun, Justin George, Maribel Portilla, James P. Glover, Katherine A. Parys, Gadi V.P. Reddy
Faculty Publications
The redbanded stink bug (RBSB), Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an invasive stink bug species and a polyphagous pest of cultivated crops and non-cultivated wild plants. The increase in soybean cultivation during the 1960s-1970s led to the spread of RBSB as an economic pest of soybean throughout South America, especially in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. In the early 2000s, RBSB became an economic concern to US agriculture and is currently a key species in a stink bug complex that damages soybean in many mid-southern states. RBSB causes extensive damage to soybeans and other economically important leguminous crops by feeding …

Faculty Publications
The giant borer, Telchin licus (Drury), is an important insect pest of sugarcane in Central and South America. This pest is difficult to control with chemical or biological control approaches due to the larvae behavior of hiding in the deepest parts of the plants. Manual scavenging and skewer killing have been the main approaches for monitoring and control of T. licus in Brazil, the world's largest sugarcane producer. Recently, Brazil launched the first commercial use of transgenic sugarcane expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins to control the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), a primary insect pest of sugarcane in the Americas. …

Novel technologies help to monitor the environmental impact of human activities, but tests involving datasets from several countries, encompassing a large variability of soil properties, are still scarce. This study utilized proximal sensors to predict soil organic carbon (OC) and soil texture of samples from Brazil, France, India, Mozambique, and United States. A total of 1749 samples were analyzed by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry and visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Sand (R2 = 0.89), silt (0.87), and clay (0.84) predictions were very accurate, despite contrasting climates, soil parent materials, and weathering degrees. Soil OC predictions were similarly successful (0.74) …
Impact Of Solar Radiation On Perchlorate Formation In The Atmosphere: Evidence From Ice Core Measurements, Bishnu Kunwar
Impact Of Solar Radiation On Perchlorate Formation In The Atmosphere: Evidence From Ice Core Measurements, Bishnu Kunwar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perchlorate, which derives from both anthropogenic and natural sources in the current environment, poses a substantial health hazard to humans as it competes with iodine uptake in the thyroid gland. Consequently, there has been considerable concern about minimizing human exposure to environmental perchlorate by restricting its release from man-made sources. However, the absence of a clear understanding regarding the respective contributions of man-made and natural sources has hindered widespread regulation efforts. A 300-year (1700–2007) Summit, Greenland ice core record from a previous study showed relatively stable perchlorate concentrations in Greenland snow prior to 1980, with some elevated perchlorate levels associated …

Developing Machine Learning Models For Selection Of Management Zones, Sravanthi Bachina
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil sampling and analyses play a crucial role in optimizing nutrient management and enhancing crop productivity. However, collecting representative samples across diverse landscapes is challenging due to knowledge gaps about spatial variability of soil properties, large fields, multiple samples, and analysis costs. Collecting soil samples based on the management zones can help farmers gather precise information about soil properties with fewer samples. Recent developments in precision agriculture and machine learning. This study aimed to develop machine learning models that can learn, analyze, and refine landscape and soil properties data for automated selection of soil sampling zones and generating prediction maps. …

Species Distribution Modeling Of Aquilegia Brevistyla (Ranunculaceae): A Critically Imperiled Black Hills Disjunct Species, Eric Daniel Puetz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unchecked human activity is contributing to rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions, changes in land use, altered disturbance/fire regimes, spread of invasive species, and loss of biological diversity and related breakdown of ecosystem services. Additionally, climatic shifts may lead to phenological mismatches between species and their environments if these changes outpace a species’ ability to adapt or migrate to a more suitable habitat. Isolated mountain populations are particularly threatened by unpredictable climatic conditions, as they may have limited migration corridors and often lower levels of genetic diversity to move or adapt, respectively. As these negative feedbacks compound on the landscape, …

Mechanical Testing Of Novel Biopolymers For The Replacement Of Petroleum-Based Plastic Hay Bale Net Wrapping, Logan Wolf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to test biopolymers synthesized from oilseeds or produced from agricultural wastes for large bale net wrapping as a viable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics (PBP). The goal is to test and assess novel polymers to guide the synthesis of a benign biodegradable polymer. Biobased net wrapping will significantly reduce ingestion of PBPs in animals such as ruminants to improve digestive health and minimize cattle loss due to plastic disease. Biobased plastics will also achieve partial or complete breakdown shortly after service without depositing microplastics in the environment. This will reduce the risk of damage …
The Hutton Project: Long-Term Agricultural Impacts On Soil Loss And Carbon Dynamics In Eastern South Dakota, Eli Halverson
The Hutton Project: Long-Term Agricultural Impacts On Soil Loss And Carbon Dynamics In Eastern South Dakota, Eli Halverson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Long-term and intensified agricultural land management has resulted in increased rates of soil erosion and has altered much of the carbon cycle at regional and global scales. Anthropogenic degradation of soil resources is a barrier to sustainable production, soil functioning, and ecosystem services. It is difficult to quantify the scope of pedogenic changes due to the lack of legacy data and short temporal scales. This study utilized decades to century-old soil information to quantify historical soil erosion losses and changes in soil carbon pools of eastern South Dakota soils. The results show that soils in the region have been significantly …

Climate Change Adaptation For Embankment Through Biogeotechnics, Debayan Ghosh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Problematic soil like expansive soil, and frost-susceptible soil causes significant damage to civil infrastructure. The use of calcium-based stabilizers in the treatment of sulfate-rich expansive soils is not suggested due to the formation of ettringite. Infrastructure such as pavements and embankments built on expansive soil are often exposed to the damaging impacts of freeze-thaw cycles in areas prone to seasonal freezing making them vulnerable to cracking and spalling. In this study, a native expansive soil from South Dakota with a sulfate content of more than 10,000 ppm was stabilized using biopolymer and cement. The experimental study investigated the strength and …
The Effects Of Temperature, Flooding, And Goose Feces Addition On Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Ammonification In Four High-Latitude Soils From Western Alaska, Jenna M. Ross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The large carbon (C) stock of wetlands is vulnerable to climate change, especially in high latitudes that are warming at a disproportional rate. Likewise, low-elevation Arctic coastal areas will flood more frequently under climate change and sea-level rise, which may alter goose herbivory and fecal deposition patterns if geese move inland. While temperature, flooding, and feces impact soil C emissions, their interactive effects have been rarely studied. Here, I explore the impact of these interactions on CO2 and CH4 emissions and nitrogen (N) mineralization (ammonification) in soils collected from four plant communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta, a high latitude …
Plant Pathways Associated With Competition For Soybean Root Colonization By Bradyrhizobium Strains, Athira Sethu Madhavan
Plant Pathways Associated With Competition For Soybean Root Colonization By Bradyrhizobium Strains, Athira Sethu Madhavan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient for the growth and development of plants. Legume crops like soybeans develop symbiotic associations with soil bacteria from the genus, Bradyrhizobium to obtain fixed nitrogen. In this mutualistic association, rhizobia are released into root nodules that provide a compatible environment for rhizobia to grow and fix nitrogen (Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation (SNF)). A caveat in such beneficial associations is the competition between different rhizobium strains in soil for infection and nodule occupancy. The elite inoculant strains encounter competition by indigenous rhizobial population in the soil to infect and nodulate a susceptible legume host, because of which …

Fisheries systems function at broad spatial and temporal scales. Fishes within these systems are often highly mobile and move to locate adequate habitat, to feed and reproduce. As individuals navigate their environment, they potentially cross regulatory boundaries (state or federal) and or encounter physical barriers such as dams. Regulatory boundaries may not physically impede fish movement, but they are visible to fisheries managers thus the fishes within them may be vulnerable to varying management and harvest regulations. Physical boundaries (e.g., dams) are also particularly problematic for highly mobile species in large river systems. In chapter two, I documented that apparent …
