Impacts Posed By Recreational Marijuana Legalization : A Global Comparison In Jurisdictions With Different Marijuana Control Policies, Weizhou Zhu Nov 2024

Impacts Posed By Recreational Marijuana Legalization : A Global Comparison In Jurisdictions With Different Marijuana Control Policies, Weizhou Zhu

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

As marijuana legalization is adopted by more and more countries, there have been a lot of debates about its benefits and downsides. Around the world, the majority of countries maintain their illegality, a few are fully open, while some decriminalize or do not enforce the prohibition laws. However, few studies have examined the different impacts brought by district cannabis control policies. This study uses the systematic review method to investigate the impacts of marijuana legalization in 5 domains and compare them on a global basis. A total of 51 articles published between January 2019 to June 2024 were selected. Policy …

Structural Molecular And Developmental Evidence For Cell-Type Diversity In Cnidarian Mechanosensory Neurons, Julia Baranyk, Kristen Malir, Miguel A.P. Silva, Sakura Rieck, Gracie Scheve, Nagayasu Nakanishi Nov 2024

Structural Molecular And Developmental Evidence For Cell-Type Diversity In Cnidarian Mechanosensory Neurons, Julia Baranyk, Kristen Malir, Miguel A.P. Silva, Sakura Rieck, Gracie Scheve, Nagayasu Nakanishi

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deploying a conserved mechanosensory neuron known as the concentric hair cell, cnidarians have evolved diverse mechanoreceptors from hydroid filiform tentacles to jellyfish statocysts. However, it is unknown whether cnidarian mechanoreceptor evolution has relied solely on repurposing a single ancestral mechanosensory neuron type. Here we report evidence for cell-type diversity of mechanosensory neurons in sea-anemone cnidarian Nematostella vectensis. Uncovered in the ectoderm of feeding tentacles are conventional type I hair cells and previously unrecognized type II hair cells differing in the structure of apical sensory apparatus and synapses. Moreover, we identify TRP channel-encoding gene polycystin-1 as a type-II-hair-cell-specific essential mediator of …

Optimal Control Of Nonlinear, Nonautonomous, Energy Harvesting Systems Applied To Point Absorber Wave Energy Converters, Houssein Yassin, Tania Demonte Gonzalez, Kevin Nelson, Gordon Parker, Wayne Weaver

Michigan Tech Publications

Pursuing sustainable energy solutions has prompted researchers to focus on optimizing energy extraction from renewable sources. Control laws that optimize energy extraction require accurate modeling, often resulting in time-varying, nonlinear differential equations. An energy-maximizing optimal control law is derived for time-varying, nonlinear, second-order, energy harvesting systems. We demonstrate that sustaining periodic motion under this control law when subjected to periodic disturbances necessitates identifying appropriate initial conditions, inducing the system to follow a limit cycle. The general optimal solution is applied to two point absorber wave energy converter models: a linear model where the analytical derivation of initial conditions suffices and …

The drone technology has received a wide range of research focusing on improving flight dynamics, battery life, payload capacity and sensor technology. However, for the applications of using drone for high rise buildings are limited by battery life for longer flight with longer duration tasks. This work presents the implementation of a control valve systems for the rotational motion of a microturbine drone. The first objective of this project was to design and develop a control valve system for a microturbine with propeller. The second objective was to measure micro turbine’s performance output which consisted of revolution per minute (rpm) …

Evaluation Of Various Bacterial Self-Healing Activities In Concrete, Upadhyaya K. Sandesh, Priyodip Paul, S. Sumanth Akhil, Nishanta Khatoniyar

Open Access archive

Concrete, a popular construction material, is prone to cracking, which affects its long-term strength and durability. An easier, eco-friendly, and economical approach to improve the durability of concrete is by applying ureolytic bacteria. Self-healing concrete is the concrete that fills the micro-cracks by producing calcite crystals when the bacteria come in contact with water and air. The study focuses on accessing the concrete healing mechanism using five different bacteria that contribute to the increase in compressive strength of the concrete. These five bacteria studied here are rarely used in concrete. The hardened properties of concrete with ureolytic bacteria were comparable …

A Fisher Information Theory Of Aesthetic Preference For Complexity, Sébastien Berquet, Hassan Aleem, Norberto M. Grzywacz Nov 2024

A Fisher Information Theory Of Aesthetic Preference For Complexity, Sébastien Berquet, Hassan Aleem, Norberto M. Grzywacz

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

When evaluating sensory stimuli, people tend to prefer those with not too little or not too much complexity. A recent theoretical proposal for this phenomenon is that preference has a direct link to the Observed Fisher Information that a stimulus carries about the environment. To make this theory complete, one must specify the model that the brain has about complexities in the world. Here, we develop this model by first obtaining the distributions of three indices of complexity measured as normalized Shannon Entropy in real-world images from seven environments. We then search for a parametric model that accounts for these …

Venomcap: An Exon-Capture Probe Set For The Targeted Sequencing Of Snake Venom Genes, Scott L. Travers, Carl R. Hutter, Christopher C. Austin, Stephen C. Donnellan, Matthew D. Buehler, Christopher E. Ellison, Sara Ruane

Faculty Publications

Snake venoms are complex mixtures of toxic proteins that hold significant medical, pharmacological and evolutionary interest. To better understand the genetic diversity underlying snake venoms, we developed VenomCap, a novel exon-capture probe set targeting toxin-coding genes from a wide range of elapid snakes, with a particular focus on the ecologically diverse and medically important subfamily Hydrophiinae. We tested the capture success of VenomCap across 24 species, representing all major elapid lineages. We included snake phylogenomic probes in the VenomCap capture set, allowing us to compare capture performance between venom and phylogenomic loci and to infer elapid phylogenetic relationships. We demonstrated …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Pathologies of the skull and teeth are well documented for many human populations, but there are fewer studies of other primates. We contrast lesion prevalence and patterning among cercopithecoid primates and map variation onto socioecological variables. We compare craniodental lesions in six species: Nasalis larvatus (n = 54), Colobus polykomos (n = 64), Cercopithecus mitis (n = 65), Macaca fascicularis (n = 109), Theropithecus gelada (n = 13), and Papio anubis (n = 76). One of us (C.A.K.) evaluated each adult skull for multiple lesion types using standard criteria. We also tested for a …
