Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The current study examines the implementation of the evidence-based practices of the neonatal integrative developmental care model in the neonatal intensive care unit and how these practices are implemented in reference to initiation method and frequency. In recent years, research examining the effectiveness of individualized, developmentally supportive care to infants in the NICU has demonstrated a variety of positive effects. Although great strides have been made in efforts to provide developmentally supportive care, wide variability and inconsistency remain in the quantity and quality of experience for infants and families in the NICU. Even though a hospital may incorporate developmentally supportive …

Carbaryl-Induced Leaf Necrosis In Vitis Rupestris B-38, Courtney Nicole Duncan Jan 2024

Carbaryl-Induced Leaf Necrosis In Vitis Rupestris B-38, Courtney Nicole Duncan

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Agricultural insecticides are formulated to target insects while minimizing harm to the intended crop. In rare instances, however, insecticides induce harmful physiological reactions in certain plant genomes, inflicting severe tissue damage. This project investigated the genetic basis of such a reaction observed in the grape genotype Vitis rupestris B38 following exposure to the insecticide carbaryl, which manifests as interveinal leaf necrosis. Through analysis of an F1 hybrid progeny of this grapevine, I mapped this phenotype to a QTL on chromosome 16. The carbaryl-sensitive trait was repeatedly mapped to the same locus using phenotype data from two different field locations and …

Road Extraction On Remote Sensing Imagery: Historical Mapping Of The Brazilian Amazon, Jonas Paiva Botelho Jr Jan 2024

Road Extraction On Remote Sensing Imagery: Historical Mapping Of The Brazilian Amazon, Jonas Paiva Botelho Jr

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This work proposes an artificial intelligence model based on U-Net architecture to map road networks in the Brazilian Amazon. Over the years, the Amazon region has been heavily exploited, leading to increased deforestation rates, contributing to CO2 emissions, amplifying global warming, and causing a disturbance in local fauna and flora. The expansion into the forest by illegal miners, loggers, and land grabbers can be tracked down by the construction of roads, which we can refer to as the arteries of deforestation. Previous works on the matter proposed algorithms that use high-resolution imagery to map roads precisely. However, this work approach …

Voice-enabled virtual assistants have gained widespread popularity and are increasingly common in smart homes. To enhance customization and personalization in user experiences with these assistants, implementing a context detection feature is beneficial. This feature enables the virtual assistant to gather more information from the audio data of short voice conversations with users, helping it maintain awareness of the conversation and respond more aptly. In this thesis, I propose a novel context detection approach for virtual assistants in smart homes, named WERKS, which leverages user emotions. WERKS stands for word embedding with emotionally relevant keyword search. The WERKS approach incorporates emotion …

Origin Of Carbonate Mud Mounds In Southwestern Missouri, Jared Mcavoy Jan 2024

Origin Of Carbonate Mud Mounds In Southwestern Missouri, Jared Mcavoy

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Small carbonate mud mounds are found in Lower Mississippian strata of southwestern Missouri. These compare favorably with larger mounds, known as Waulsortian mounds, located in the Meuse River valley of southern Belgium. The origin of Waulsortian and similar mounds is unknown, but they commonly are interpreted as accumulations of mud, where the presence of biological organisms responsible for supposed bio-construction remains uncertain. Alternative hypotheses are that these may have been non-cohesive slump or cohesive slide masses. Multiple techniques, including δ13C and δ18O isotopic analyses and unmanned aerial vehicle photography, were used to determine the most feasible working hypothesis. Determining the …

Determining Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid Adsorption On Nanoparticles Using Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, Iqra Shakoor

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The contamination of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, C8F17SO3H) in water is considered a threat to humans and the environment. The strength of carbon and fluorine bond is responsible for its high stability in the environment. Therefore, it can be transferred from the environment to food sources and eventually humans. This study assessed the ability of nanoparticles to adsorb PFOS from water. The experiment was performed by preparing suspensions of PFOS (10 ppm) and different concentrations (1000 ppm, 500 ppm, 250 ppm) of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) or magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs). The suspensions …

Exploring The Impact Of P2y2 Receptor Activation And Inflammation On Glucose Homeostasis In Mice, Jamila Makhloufi

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Insulin resistance is the body's impaired ability to utilize endogenous and exogenous insulin to take up blood glucose and is associated with many clinical conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. The cause of insulin resistance is still unknown; however, it is linked to inflammation. The activation of the purinergic P2Y2 receptor potentiates an inflammatory response under the pathogenesis of obesity and has adverse effects on glucose metabolism by regulating insulin resistance. The goal of this research is to investigate the effects of P2Y2 receptor activation on the downstream signaling pathways of the insulin receptor …

Characterization Of The Interaction Of Three Domains Of Nlrp2 (Pyd, Lrr, And Nacht) With Ebp1 Protein, Rakshya Bhatta

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

NOD-like receptors (NLRs) are cytoplasmic proteins essential for various immune responses such as reactions to infectious diseases, metabolic and cellular damage, fetal development, and cancer. Among the 22 identified NLR proteins, research has highlighted the significant roles of NLRP2 in fetal development. NLRP2 is also classified as a maternal effect gene and the mutation to this gene can lead to DNA methylation imprinting defects, altered gene expression, and conditions such as recurrent miscarriages (RMs). The protein EBP1, which has been found to have roles in embryonic development has been implicated in the regulation of DNA methylation. Recent studies have also …

Disturbance-Prone Ozark Streams: Interactions Between Plants And The Stream Environment, Alexis Renea Reifsteck Jan 2024

Disturbance-Prone Ozark Streams: Interactions Between Plants And The Stream Environment, Alexis Renea Reifsteck

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Ozark streams are extremely diverse ecosystems, despite frequent flood disturbance. Plant communities are frequently altered by bed-moving floods but are extremely resilient. We know that land-use, sediments, and nutrients can impact plant communities, but more can be divulged about how plants alter communities and how environmental variables influence plant community composition in disturbance-prone Ozark streams. To address this, I examined two key aspects of Ozark stream ecosystems: the role of American Water Willow, Justicia americana, in structuring aquatic habitats and the factors influencing gravel bar plant community composition. In the first chapter, I investigated how J. americana, a …

Temporal Distribution Of Potential Waterborne Pathogens In Sequiota Spring, William J. Durstock Jan 2024

Temporal Distribution Of Potential Waterborne Pathogens In Sequiota Spring, William J. Durstock

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Waterborne pathogens from human fecal matter pose a significant health risk in karst environments, where domestic wastewater can easily be transferred to the shallow groundwater system via old, leaky septic tanks and damaged sewer lines. This study monitored fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and potential pathogens in Sequiota Spring located in the karst region of southwest Missouri, using Microbial Source Tracking (MST) and Illumina DNA sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. MST identified high levels of human fecal indicator bacteria (HFIB) (up to 110,000 cells/L) in July 2020. By June 2022, HFIB levels had dropped significantly (55-fold reduction) after the City …

Effects Of Subchronic Oral Pfos Exposure Via Drinking Water On Gut Microbiota Composition, Emma Ann Loder Jan 2024

Effects Of Subchronic Oral Pfos Exposure Via Drinking Water On Gut Microbiota Composition, Emma Ann Loder

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) has been phased out of production in the United States, but because of its resistance to degradation and its persistence in the environment, PFOS can be found in drinking water across America. Oral exposure to PFOS has been linked to adverse developmental, immunological, hepatic, and endocrine health. Oral PFOS exposure may alter the gut microbiota and cause dysbiosis, which is implicated in the pathology of inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s disease, diabetes, and ulcerative colitis. The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of subchronic oral PFOS exposure on the composition of the gut microbiota. Adult …

Microvascular Endothelial Permeability Coefficient Regulated By Purinergic P2y2 Receptor, Dana S. James Jan 2024

Microvascular Endothelial Permeability Coefficient Regulated By Purinergic P2y2 Receptor, Dana S. James

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Inflammatory mediators profoundly affect endothelial permeability by disrupting its barrier function, resulting in increased permeability (hyperpermeability). Interestingly, hyperpermeability is involved in a wide range of disorders and diseases, and can pose significant risks to life in diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome and systemic capillary leak syndrome. Though vascular leakage, a hallmark of inflammation, profoundly exacerbates the pathogenesis of diseases, the direct mechanism is not fully understood. In vivo study has shown that activation of nucleotide P2Y2 receptor (P2Y2R) increases permeability in murine venule. The goal of this study was to determine the molecular mechanism of …

Patterns Of Epiphytic Bacterial Growth On Flower Surfaces: Relationships With Flower Longevity And Environmental Factors, Rita Nkem Afagwu

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Flowers host diverse communities of epiphytic bacteria, which can impact floral functions, pollinator interactions, and overall plant fitness. However, little is known about how the abundance of these bacteria change as flowers age, and how these shifts may correlate with floral longevity. In this study I investigate the change in bacterial abundance across the lifespan of a flower from anthesis (opening of bud to flower) to senescence (wilting of flower) and to explore the potential implications for floral longevity. We tracked the age of the flowers by determining the average age to senescence in flowers of 8 plant species over …

Sptbn1 Involvement In Reverse Transcription Of Hiv-1 Infection In Chme3 Cells, Jeanette Drecker Jan 2024

Sptbn1 Involvement In Reverse Transcription Of Hiv-1 Infection In Chme3 Cells, Jeanette Drecker

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) is a lentivirus that infects CD4+ cells, causing a

weakened immune system that leads to the development of Acquired Immunodeficiency

Syndrome (AIDS). HIV utilizes host proteins to replicate. A genome wide screen by Brass has

shown that the molecular scaffolding protein, SPTBN1, is essential for HIV-1 infection.

However, the viral replication steps that SPTBN1 impacts are not known. Previous work in the

Hulme Lab has shown that SPTBN1 knockdown delays HIV capsid uncoating but does not

impact viral fusion kinetics. Uncoating and reverse transcription of HIV-1 occur simultaneously.

Therefore, the goal for this study was …

Demographics And Recruitment Patterns In A Reintroduced Population Of Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys Temminckii), Melisa P. Blasky

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Reintroductions have increasingly become a useful tool for managing wildlife populations, but post-reintroduction studies to evaluate the success of these efforts are often lacking. In 2007, 265 Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys temminckii) were released into several semi-impounded wetlands in the Washita River drainage basin in southeastern Oklahoma, where surveys in the late 1990s suggested that the species was functionally extirpated. I conducted turtle trapping surveys using baited hoop nets to assess demographics and recruitment patterns in the population 11–12 years after the initial reintroduction. I estimated the age of juveniles by counting scute annuli and compared the data …

Compton Scattering Of Mammographic Soft X-Ray Beams By Alkali And Transition Metal Salt Filters Produce X-Ray Interference Zones That May Have Treatment Potential For Localized Cancer Lesions, Subhendra N. Sarkar, Eric Lobel, Sabina Rakhmatova, Derbie Desir, Somdat Kissoon, Daler Djuraev, Katie Tam

Publications and Research

In breast x-ray imaging scattered radiation adds 50% of harmful radiation dose from anisotropic Compton scattering mechanism. We have been working with double layered inorganic salt materials that can induce Compton scattering to the incident mammographic x ray beams (in 20-30 kVp range) with adequate isotropy (angular control). Typically metal nitrates and alkali halide salt layers are shown here to cause low energy radiation interference zones with high and low photon intensities and local flux heterogeneity in terms of flux covariance. Spatial variation of low energy photon flux creates concentrated and sparse radiation zones that may be used to induce …

2. Some Ethical Considerations For Teaching And Generative Ai In Higher Education, Lydia Wilkes

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

The chapter discusses some ethical considerations for teaching and generative Al in higher education with a focus on large language models like ChatGPT. These considerations include generative Al's effects on the environment and labor, its reliance on data and tendency to violate privacy, the biases encoded in it, and the digital divide. As more sophisticated generative Al is integrated into word processors, these ethical concerns will become more difficult to perceive and the ethics of using Al more difficult to parse. This chapter concludes with a note on power and justice.

Critical Thinking Skills In Pre-Service Teachers And Their Coursework: Investigating The Preparation Of Teachers In The Rural Midwest With Humans, Ai, And Cyborg Researchers, Tiffany Shonerd Jan 2024

Critical Thinking Skills In Pre-Service Teachers And Their Coursework: Investigating The Preparation Of Teachers In The Rural Midwest With Humans, Ai, And Cyborg Researchers, Tiffany Shonerd

Dissertations and Theses

Despite the plethora of research and literature regarding the relationship of critical thinking and its key role in promoting learning, little research investigated the teaching of critical thinking to pre-service teachers in their coursework along with how they facilitate it in their students. As future teachers worked towards completing their teaching degrees, student teaching permitted them to work in live classroom settings with veteran teachers as mentors. Markedly, scholars argued that future teacher programs needed to understand the importance of critical thinking and utilize facilitation strategies in classroom settings. In this way, the live classroom setting could then create students …

Characterizing Sex Differences In Hpv Negative Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Barclay Jan 2024

Characterizing Sex Differences In Hpv Negative Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Barclay

Dissertations and Theses

It is now widely accepted that peripheral solid tumors are infiltrated by nerves. This infiltration of malignancies by nerves is referred to as tumor innervation. The Vermeer laboratory studies tumor innervation primarily in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using a syngeneic cell line representing a mutationally-induced form of the disease; these cells are called MOC2-7 cells. In addition to defining the molecular consequences of tumor-infiltrating nerves on disease, the lab also focuses on their influence on behavior. This is important as cancer patients have a significantly higher incidence of depression and anxiety as compared to the population at large. …
