The History Of -Eer In English: Suffix Competition Or Symbiosis?, Zachary Dukic, Chris C. Palmer
Graduate Publications – English
Ecological models of competition have provided great explanatory power regarding synonymy in derivational morphology. Competition models of this type have certainly shown their utility, as they have demonstrated, among other things, the relevance of frequency measures, productivity, compositionality and analyzability when comparing the development of morphological constructions. There has been less consideration of alternative models that could be used to describe the historical co-development of suffixes that produce words with sometimes similar forms or meanings but are not inevitably or solely in competition. The symbiotic model proposed in this article may help answer larger questions in linguistics, such as how …

Euryhalinity is present in diverse aquatic taxa and requires flexible osmoregulation to field the challenges posed by differing salinities. Na+, K+-ATPase (NKA) is a ubiquitous ion pump in the gills of fishes and, for some species, paralogs of the catalytic -subunit (NKA 1a and NKA 1b) exhibit reciprocal expression between fresh- and seawater, termed paralog-switching. We investigated the expression and evolution of NKA paralogs in Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), a euryhaline and migratory fish. Comparisons between landlocked and diadromous life history forms and migrant and pre-migrant ontogenetic stages were used to study shifts in NKA paralog expression related to freshwater or …
Neuroimmune Response And Neurodegeneration In Adolescent Rats Following Binge Alcohol Exposure, Catherine Van Doorn
Neuroimmune Response And Neurodegeneration In Adolescent Rats Following Binge Alcohol Exposure, Catherine Van Doorn
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Studies of adolescent drinking show a distinct prevalence of binge drinking, including at extreme levels, and this type of drinking has been identified as increasing risk of developing an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Additionally, females suffer greater levels of harm from binge drinking and AUD and in an abbreviated timeline compared to males. Neuroimmune reactivity, specifically with microglial reactivity following binge drinking, may influence the sex differences seen in negative alcohol-related health disparities.
The first set of experiments sought to examine a marker of microglial reactivity, TSPO, in adolescent females and males and found the sexes displayed different temporal and …

In this book, the authors update an earlier history of the Department of Physiology at West Virginia University that described its first 100 years. It covers the most recent half-century (1965-2022), a tumultuous time characterized by periods of faculty growth and development of the department’s research and educational programs interspersed with major challenges the department had to overcome. The latter included an autocratic chair who created a hostile work environment, an administrator who favored research centers over departments, and the dissolution of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, which led to the creation of the Physiology and Pharmacology Department. Almost …

Alcohol Addiction Recovery Experiences Among Christian African Immigrants, Chukwudera Arthur Egesionu
Alcohol Addiction Recovery Experiences Among Christian African Immigrants, Chukwudera Arthur Egesionu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe problem of alcohol addiction is heightened when other psychological factors are present, such as the stress of acculturation. The purpose of this research was to describe the experiences of Christian African immigrants in America who have used faith-based treatment approaches while in recovery from alcoholism and to determine how their faith may have been a way of coping with their recovery. In this hermeneutic qualitative phenomenological study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight participants. The data were analyzed to explore the experiences of Christian African acculturating to America who endorse a faith-based approach to their recovery, and …
Multimodel Approach To A Support Stock Assessment Of Standardized Catch And Effort Data: A Case Study Of Blue Shark (Prionace Glauca) In The Indian Ocean By The Taiwanese Large-Scale Longline Fishery, Chun-Yi Hung, Hoang Huy Huynh, Xing-Han Wu, Wen-Pei Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In the context of stock assessment and fishery conservation, determining catch per unit effort (CPUE) accurately and reliably is essential. This study estimated trends in the relative abundance of blue sharks (Prionace glauca) in the Indian Ocean from 2005 to 2022. Blue sharks constitute a resilient bycatch species in pelagic tuna and swordfish longline fisheries. We employed a multimodel approach that included delta-lognormal, zero-inflated negative binomial, and vector autoregressive spatiotemporal (VAST) models to standardize catch rates recorded by observers in the Taiwanese large-scale longline fishery. Our analysis concentrated on the CPUE of blue sharks, including standardizing the number of fish …
The Emerging Crime Of Persecution Based On Sexual Orientation, Anthony J. Colangelo
The Emerging Crime Of Persecution Based On Sexual Orientation, Anthony J. Colangelo
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
This Article argues that persecution based on sexual
orientation constitutes a crime against humanity under international law.
Unlike other scholarship that has focused on the definition of crimes against
humanity in the 1998 Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court—
which does not explicitly enumerate “sexual orientation” as a protected
classification—this Article looks to customary international law made up by
the practices of states.
Diligent research has revealed that between 1998 and 2022, at least 107
states enacted laws or revised existing laws decriminalizing sexual
orientation and/or categorizing sexual orientation as a protected
classification from discrimination. This is in addition …
Behavioral Responses To Chronic And Acute Stressors In Prairie Voles, Yessenia Chavez
Behavioral Responses To Chronic And Acute Stressors In Prairie Voles, Yessenia Chavez
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Social isolation has several psychological and physiological consequences including anxiety and depressive-like behaviors, rapid heart rate (HR), and elevated blood pressure. Social isolation also combines with acute environmental stress to influence emotions and behaviors. The present study evaluated behavioral responses to a combination of long-term social stress and acute stress in the prairie vole rodent model, and whether an environmental treatment could protect against anxiety-related consequences of acute and social stress. Prairie voles engage in social behaviors translational to humans, including monogamous relationships, and provide a valuable model for investigating the interactions of social stress and acute environmental stress. Black Males’ Experiences Of Resilience: A Narrative Study On College Students Experiences During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Keshia R. Graham
Theses and Dissertations
Black men’s resilience has historically been discussed, interwoven, and disguised by deficit-based models rather than strength-based ones. The current study examined Black men's resilience using a strength-based model for Black male students in higher education institutions. Specifically, the experiences and resilience of Black men before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were explored. This study targeted Black male students from an urban institution, with the aim to find out what key elements supported their resilient behavior throughout the most challenging times in their college career. The African American Male Theory and Resiliency Theory used as the theoretical framework. A narrative methodology …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Neurosurgeries complicated by infection are associated with prolonged treatment and significant morbidity. Craniotomy is a common neurosurgical procedure; however, the cellular and molecular signatures associated with craniotomy infection in human subjects are unknown. A retrospective study of over 2,500 craniotomies reveals diverse patient demographics, pathogen identity, and surgical landscapes associated with infection. Leukocyte profiling in patient tissues from craniotomy infection characterizes a predominance of granulocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells that may arise from transmigrated blood neutrophils, based on single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) trajectory analysis. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis identifies metabolic shifts in tissue leukocytes, including a conserved hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signature. The …

Introduction
Despite declining cancer death rates in the US, cancer remains the second deadliest disease and disparities persist. Although research has focused on identifying risk factors for cancer deaths and associated disparities, few studies have examined how these relationships vary over time and space. The primary objective of this study was to identify cancer mortality hot spots and cold spots — areas where cancer death rates decreased less than or more than neighboring areas over time. A secondary objective was to identify risk factors of cancer mortality hot spots and cold spots.
Methods
We analyzed county-level cancer death rates from …
The Use Of Blended Learning Approach To Enhance Teaching And Learning Of Integrated Science In A Junior Secondary School In Kenya: An Action Research, Adero Norah

From Framework To The Field: How ‘Data Power’ In Agri-Food Systems Violates Human Rights, Jane Ezirigwe
From Framework To The Field: How ‘Data Power’ In Agri-Food Systems Violates Human Rights, Jane Ezirigwe
The Transnational Human Rights Review
This article builds on the analytical framework I co-developed in “Power Contestations in the Use of Agri-food Data: Towards a Sustainability Governance Approach” by expanding its application and demonstrating its relevance to human rights concerns. Drawing on sectoral examples, the article examines five interrelated dimensions of power—agenda-setting, technology development and deployment, politics of knowledge and evidence, hegemonic alliances, and harvesting data and value—and shows how these dynamics produce structural inequities and violations of rights to food, participation, non-discrimination, privacy, and cultural integrity. While the human rights system has limitations, as most treaties predate the emergence of big data and lack …

How To Keep Involved For The "Lazy" And The "Scared", Malcolm D. Gambles Ii
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024
This presentation is essentially a collection of my own experiences and the strategies that have helped me remain consistent in my service-learning journey. I had a lot of passion when coming up with this presentation because I now have the ability to talk about the struggles I faced when on my service-learning journey and way to maybe help others suffering from the same problems. As someone who has both been considered "lazy," and "scared," when it comes to handling my responsibilities in my early childhood and young adult life, I have picked up many techniques to help me stay involved. …

The purpose of my project was to volunteer at in a healthcare setting which was required for the specific section of LDR 3215 that I took this semester. Key activities that I did were chatting through the online forum with people who needed someone to help them feel supported in challenging moments that they were facing. I learned how big of a difference chatting with someone even just for a few minutes can make in someone’s life. I also how important it is for our mental health to have someone who will listen to us. I am so grateful for …

What Effect Does Helminth Infection Have On An Adult's Immune System?, Shanzida Toha
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024
The research question is, how does the prevalence of helminth infections impact the immune system of adult patients? To clarify this subject: How does the prevalence of helminth infections affect the immune system of adult patients? Specifically, can helminth exposure help individuals reactivate T-cells to improve immunity and mitigate TB while providing preventative benefits for metabolic conditions?
This concept suggests that we could explore helminth-based therapies to treat or even prevent metabolic conditions that are precursors to cardiovascular disease. Such a therapeutic approach could be revolutionary, especially for populations without access to costly medications like insulin or blood pressure drugs. …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024
Reflecting on my service-learning experience, I recognize that I used to judge first-generation immigrants who struggled with English. Over time, I realized this was unfair, as I hadn’t considered their individual challenges. This shift in perspective led me to become more open-minded, seek new experiences, and pursue my passion for helping others through direct patient care. I realized that engaging in leadership-based service learning could enhance my empathy and leadership abilities, which has become central to my personal and professional growth.
